How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden Jan 2024

How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden

Honors Theses and Capstones

During the 20th century, the theme of World's Fairs in the United States broke away from previous World Exposition traditions and centered around concepts of progress and the future. This thesis investigates the conception of the future and the evolution of the World's Fair themes during times of economic and political turmoil at the Chicago 1933–1934, New York 1939–1940, and Seattle 1962 World’s Fairs. In each instance, the fair’s organizers felt the need to respond to world events, which caused them to shift their initial focus from a local attempt to increase prosperity, to a national commentary on global conditions.

Targeting Bcl6 Transcription Factor In Ovarian Cancer, Allison F. Mackey Jan 2024

Targeting Bcl6 Transcription Factor In Ovarian Cancer, Allison F. Mackey

Honors Theses and Capstones

Ovarian cancer is the most fatal female reproductive cancer, with most cases being diagnosed in late stages, after metastasis has become widespread. This can make ovarian cancer challenging to successfully treat, especially with its high rate of recurrence. The use of small molecule compounds to inhibit overexpressed transcription factors may provide an effective method for treatment. BCL6 is a transcription factor that is abnormally overexpressed in patients with recurring and late-stage ovarian cancer and has been implicated in proliferation and metastatic behavior. The identification of multiple potential inhibitors of BCL6 could improve chances for the further testing of these compounds, …

The Ubiquity Of Time In Latent-Cause Inference, Dan-Mircea Mirea, Yeon Soon Shin, Sarah Dubrow, Yael Niv Jan 2024

The Ubiquity Of Time In Latent-Cause Inference, Dan-Mircea Mirea, Yeon Soon Shin, Sarah Dubrow, Yael Niv

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Humans have an outstanding ability to generalize from past experiences, which requires parsing continuously experienced events into discrete, coherent units, and relating them to similar past experiences. Time is a key element in this process; however, how temporal information is used in generalization remains unclear. Latent-cause inference provides a Bayesian framework for clustering experiences, by building a world model in which related experiences are generated by a shared cause. Here we examine how temporal information is used in latent-cause inference, using a novel task in which participants see ‘microbe’ stimuli and explicitly report the latent cause (‘strain’) they infer for each …

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Minerals are uniquely tied to colonialism, labour, and environment; however, those relationships have traditionally not been described in mineral catalogues – an omission that limits curators’ ability to account for mineral histories. This paper re-imagines mineral cataloguing practices to restore historical, cultural, and environmental contexts that were stripped away. We describe the roles of citations; linked data; provenience and provenance histories; non-standardized and ‘unapproved’ nomenclatures; positionality; and the need to label archival silences. We examine the risks and practical limitations that arise in attempting to turn this colonial tool against itself. In discussing these issues, we contribute to ongoing dialogues …

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier Jan 2024

Viennese Japonismus And Modern Allegory In The Work Of Gustav Klimt, Anna-Marie Moblard Meier

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines Viennese Japonismus and modern allegory in the work of Gustav Klimt. One of the paradoxical ambitions of Vienna’s early visual modernists was the creation of a new art that would, nevertheless, revive the essence of tradition, creating a collective aesthetic that crossed national and historical boundaries. Klimt and his close collaborators, like Josef Hoffmann, and artists engaged in the broader context of central Europe, like Emil Orlik, believed that Japanese art presented a viable path toward a universal, modern visual language. This conception arose from layers of exoticism, primitivism, Orientalism, and genuine encounter with old and new …

“Trying Your Best In That Moment With That Person”: Maintaining Feelings Of Efficacy And Relevance In The Therapeutic Relationship With Community Mental Health Clients Experiencing Psychosis, Carolyn Solo Jan 2024

“Trying Your Best In That Moment With That Person”: Maintaining Feelings Of Efficacy And Relevance In The Therapeutic Relationship With Community Mental Health Clients Experiencing Psychosis, Carolyn Solo

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Community mental health clients who experience psychosis, particularly Black and Latinx clients, are subject to numerous barriers to competent clinical care. The fundamental challenges of community mental health settings can be detrimental to clinicians’ belief that they can be effective while providing care to clients with psychosis in alignment with the common factors of therapeutic treatment and the principles of trauma-informed care. This dissertation proposes a grounded theory based on 16 participant interviews with community mental health clinicians in Philadelphia who have worked in outpatient settings with clients with psychosis. Using the frameworks of self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), the common …

Development Of A Ni-Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Mizoroki- Heck Reaction For The Synthesis Of Phenanthridinone Derivatives, Diana Rachii Jan 2024

Development Of A Ni-Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Mizoroki- Heck Reaction For The Synthesis Of Phenanthridinone Derivatives, Diana Rachii

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The Birch reduction-alkylation coupled to the desymmetrizing Mizoroki-Heck reaction is a novel synthetic tool to form potentially bioactive phenanthridinone analogs from inexpensive and easily available starting materials. This work describes a rare example of the direct replacement of palladium for nickel in our previously reported enantioselective intramolecular Heck reaction. A Ni-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction has been developed to transform symmetrical 1,4- cyclohexadienes with attached aryl halides to phenanthridinone analogs containing quaternary stereocenters. Moreover, this approach provides direct access to six-member ring heterocyclic systems bearing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters, which have been much more challenging to form enantioselectively with nickel-catalyzed Heck …

Multibillion-Dollar Tax Questions, James Alm, Jay A. Soled, Kathleen Delaney Thomas Jan 2024

Multibillion-Dollar Tax Questions, James Alm, Jay A. Soled, Kathleen Delaney Thomas

Faculty Publications

Tax compliance in the United States historically hovers in the 80 percent range, costing the nation approximately half a trillion dollars annually in uncollected tax revenue. To foster greater tax compliance, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) should employ whatever tools are at its disposal. Standard deterrence theory argues that increasing the audit rate and imposing stiffer penalties would foster greater tax compliance. There are political headwinds, however, that strongly suggest that these approaches are not currently viable. Instead, there is a low-cost method that could yield greater tax compliance. Drawing on recent and compelling social science research, the IRS should …

Natural Objects And Testamentary Freedom, Kevin Bennardo Jan 2024

Natural Objects And Testamentary Freedom, Kevin Bennardo

Faculty Publications

This Article explores the tension between inheritance law’s designation of certain beneficiaries as natural and unnatural for certain purposes and its organizing principle of testamentary freedom. Either inheritance law is primarily concerned with effectuating the preference of the decedent or it is primarily concerned with safeguarding the economic health of the family. It cannot be both. Ultimately, one of these two must yield. Either we acknowledge that decedents don’t have the level of dispositional freedom that is advertised or we change the law’s designation of some devises as natural and other as unnatural.

This Article proposes a pathway to relieve …

Structure-Function Relationship Of Oat Flour Fractions When Blended With Wheat Flour: Instrumental And Nutritional Quality Characterization Of Resulting Breads, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Milica Pojić, Ciara Mcdonagh, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Shivani Pathania Jan 2024

Structure-Function Relationship Of Oat Flour Fractions When Blended With Wheat Flour: Instrumental And Nutritional Quality Characterization Of Resulting Breads, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Milica Pojić, Ciara Mcdonagh, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Shivani Pathania

Articles

Abstract: The present work investigated the structure-function relationship of dry fractionated oat flour (DFOF) as a techno-functional ingredient using bread as a model system. Mechanically, DFOF fractions (F), that is, F1: <224 µm, F2: 250–280 µm, F3: 280–500 µm, F4: 500–600 µm, and whole oat flour (F5) were blended with white wheat flour at 10%, 30%, and 50% substitution levels for bread making. The blended flours, doughs, and bread samples were assessed for their techno-functional, nutritional, and structural characteristics. The results of Mixolab and the Rapid Visco Analyzer show that the 50% substituted F3 fraction exhibits the highest water absorption properties (69.53%), whereas the 50% F1 fraction exhibits the highest peak viscosity of the past slurry. Analysis of bread samples revealed a lower particle size of DFOF fractions and higher supplementation levels, increased β-glucan levels (0.13–1.29 g/100 bread (db), reduced fermentable monosaccharides, that is, glucose (1.44–0.33 g/100 g), and fructose (1.06–0.28 g/100 g). The effect of particle size surpassed the substitution level effect on bread volume reduction. The lowest hardness value for F1 is 10%, and the highest value for F2 is 50%. The total number of cells in the bread slice decreased from the control to the F4 fraction (50%). Multi-criteria analysis indicated that DFOF fractions produced breads with similar structure and higher nutritional value developed from white wheat flour. Practical Application: The use of mechanically fractionated oat flours fractions in white wheat flour breads can improve the nutritional profile without affecting the physical properties of the bread product. Based on the oat flour fractions, bakers and food processing companies can tailor the bread formulations for high β-glucan, high fiber, and low reduced sugar claims.

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2024

An Explainable Approach To Understanding Gender Stereotype Text, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference Papers

Gender Stereotypes refer to the widely held beliefs and assumptions about the typical traits, behaviours, and roles associated with a collective group of individuals of a particular gender in society. These typical beliefs about how people of a particular gender are described in text can cause harmful effects to individuals leading to unfair treatment. In this research, the aim is to identify the words and language constructs that can influence a text to be considered a gender stereotype. To do so, a transformer model with attention is fine-tuned for gender stereotype detection. Thereafter, words/language constructs used for the model's decision …

Industrial Hemp Production And Potential Risks In Kentucky, Hoyeon Jeong Jan 2024

Industrial Hemp Production And Potential Risks In Kentucky, Hoyeon Jeong

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Since the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2014 and 2018 legalized Industrial Hemp (Cannabis Sativa. L), interest in grain, fiber, and floral hemp production has seen growing pains. As an emerging crop, there is a research gap in the impact of weather and agronomic conditions on hemp production including THC (Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol) and pollen drift as risks in hemp cultivation. The first essay aims to measure the impact of weather and agronomic factors on hemp grain, fiber, and floral yields in Kentucky using a yield-weather model with information on field locations. The results show that heat conditions during the growing …

Given the recognized major problem of microbial drug resistance for human health, new metal-based drugs have been currently explored for their antimicrobial properties, including gallium-based compounds as potential metallophores that could perturb Fe's interactions with proteins. Herein we have designed and synthesized two bis-kojate ligands (named L4 and L6) and studied their Ga(III) complexes for their physico-chemical and biological properties. In particular a detailed study of their complexation properties in aqueous solution, showed equilibrium models with formation of quite stable dinuclear 2:3 metal:ligand complexes, though with different stability. Solid state complexes were also prepared and characterized and complementary DFT studies …

The Genetic Diversity Of An Endangered Buttercup, Ranunculus Triternatus, Ryan Garcia Jan 2024

The Genetic Diversity Of An Endangered Buttercup, Ranunculus Triternatus, Ryan Garcia

All Graduate Projects

Ranunculus triternatus, a rare endemic species of the Columbia River Gorge, faces conservation challenges due to its limited range and fragmented populations. This study assesses the genetic diversity of R. triternatus and compares it with its widespread congener, Ranunculus glaberrimus, using inter-primer binding site (iPBS) markers. Genetic data from 80 individuals across eight populations were analyzed using Nei’s genetic diversity, Shannon’s diversity index, and AMOVA. Results showed R. triternatus had higher genetic diversity than western populations of R. glaberrimus, with eastern populations of R. glaberrimus displaying greater diversity than western ones. PCA, UPGMA, and STRUCTURE analysis revealed …

Cyanide Toxicity Induced By Apricot Kernel Consumption: A Case Report, Jatin Sadarangani, Vaishnavi Singh, Benjamin K. Kingsly

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Functional foods are food items that should be consumed as part of a regular diet in order to provide advantages beyond what are typically referred to as traditional nutritional benefits. Furthermore, in order to support the better function claim or the decreased illness risk claim, these positive outcomes must be scientifically proven. Foods with particular health benefits have been referred to as "superfoods" more recently. Superfoods are conceptually defined as foods with high biological value because of their high concentration of bioactive components and high concentration of nutrients, as well as their high bioavailability and bioactivity in the body. As …

The Ersatz Of The Plain-Meaning Rule Of Statutory Construction In Sackett V. Epa (Ii), Dana Neacsu Jan 2024

The Ersatz Of The Plain-Meaning Rule Of Statutory Construction In Sackett V. Epa (Ii), Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

This essay uses the United States Supreme Court second decision in Sackett v. EPA, or Sackett (II), to stress the obvious: judges are tasked with decoding the nation’s laws for everyone’s understanding. This judiciary duty is heightened when judges encounter ordinary sounding words, such as “water” or “wetlands,” especially if they are used in technical statutes like the Clean Water Act (CWA). Moreover, it is this author’s opinion that when in doubt, rather than be afraid of acknowledging ignorance, as some comedians do, judges should aspire to incorporate scientific expertise in their legal reasoning, and avoid the fiction …

A Challenging Diagnosis Of Intestinal Tuberculosis Mimicking Crohn's Disease, Justin Sanchez, Gabriel Gonzales, Monte Troutman Jan 2024

A Challenging Diagnosis Of Intestinal Tuberculosis Mimicking Crohn's Disease, Justin Sanchez, Gabriel Gonzales, Monte Troutman

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is an underrecognized disease that shares many clinical, radiologic, endoscopic, and pathologic features with Crohn's disease, making differentiation difficult. This poses a significant problem as initiation of immunosuppressives for an assumed diagnosis of CD in a patient with ITB can lead to exacerbation of infection and life-threatening consequences. A 30-year-old Nepali man with a medical history only significant for Raynaud disease presented with a febrile illness, right lower quadrant abdominal pain, and productive cough over the course of a month. He immigrated from Nepal 3 years prior to presentation, denying other risk factors or specific symptoms of …

Systematic Regulation Of Artificial Intelligence, Yonathan Arbel, Matthew Tokson, Albert Lin Jan 2024

Systematic Regulation Of Artificial Intelligence, Yonathan Arbel, Matthew Tokson, Albert Lin

Articles

Today's artificial intelligence ("AI'') systems exhibit increasing capabilities across a remarkable variety of tasks. The rapid growth in AI ability has caught the attention of policymakers, parliaments, and the United Nations. These entities are increasingly looking towards regulating AI, not only in its particular applications, but as a technology. Yet legal scholarship has thus far offered little to this new and critical regulatory conversation, which has instead been dominated by computer scientists and technologists.

This Article begins the project of assessing AI 's broader risks and law 's role in addressing them. These risks are wide ranging-they span harms to …

Eliding Consent In The Case Of Pandemic Countermeasures Authorized Only For Emergency Use, Lars Noah Jan 2024

Eliding Consent In The Case Of Pandemic Countermeasures Authorized Only For Emergency Use, Lars Noah

UF Law Faculty Publications

Four months after the first vaccines against Covid-19 became available to the public, and just as some universities announced plans to require inoculations, the Boston Globe quoted me as (alone) suggesting that mandates would conflict with federal law. When Congress created a special mechanism for the emergency use of still investigational products, it directed providers to reveal, among other things, that individuals remained free to decline such an intervention; only after full FDA approval of a medical countermeasure would this disclosure obligation become inapplicable. I have watched with dismay over the last three years as nearly everyone—including Executive branch officials, …

Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah Jan 2024

Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah

UF Law Faculty Publications

With growing resistance to vaccinations-premised, for instance, on misplaced fears of side effects or religious objections-it takes little effort to imagine that a state might act to prohibit some or all uses of a particular vaccine licensed by the federal government. Indeed, one year ago, legislators in a couple of states toyed with the idea of banning the primary vaccines against Covid-19, and, twenty years ago, half a dozen states effectively barred certain uses of one flu vaccine formulation. Although federal law should preempt at least some of these types of state restrictions, the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution …
