Visible Light Photocatalysis With Quantum Dot Gel For Organic Synthesis, Daohua Liu

This dissertation presents metal chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs), a group of emerging visible light photocatalysts, for unique organic chemical transformations that are impossible using conventional molecular photocatalysts. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the comparison between ligand-capped CdS QD and CdS gel. CdS QD gel is a three-dimensional network of interconnected QD. CdS gels were found to show more facile charge transfer with substrates than QDs, due to the partial removal of ligands from its surface during gelation. In this thesis, I investigated two input modalities using a concept-building task experiment. I also utilized a Qualtrics survey which had two parts, one with three open-ended questions to gain deeper insights regarding participants’ experience during the experiment. The other section consisted of the NASA-TLX instrument which is used to quantify workload across six subscales: mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration. Although not statistically significant, analysis of the data revealed that performance with the keyboard was higher than with the mouse. Mental demand and frustration were also higher with the keyboard. These results aren’t conclusive but …

Several studies have emphasized the necessity of enhancing pre-service teachers' technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) (Niess, 2011; Baran, 2019). However, the contribution of teacher educators to the development of teacher candidates' abilities to teach computational and digital literacies remains insufficiently explored. To do this, we examined teacher education faculty's beliefs and values concerning the integration of computing and digital literacy (CDL) in classrooms. Based on interviews with 32 faculty, we identified themes including how CDL can support disciplinary learning and challenges for implementing CDL into teacher education. We discuss the significance of this work for teacher education.

Slugs and snails cause damage to all broadacre crops. Numbers of slugs and snails have increased in broadacre cropping in Western Australia (WA) with the use of minimum tillage and stubble-retention practices. These systems increase the organic content of paddocks and soil moisture content, leading to higher survival levels of slugs and snails.

Slug and snail pests in Australia have come from other countries, mainly in the Mediterranean region. They have similar lifecycles, which means similar management techniques can be employed to control them in broadacre crops.

The Book of Mormon contains several instances where a speaker or author in the Book of Mormon quotes a previous one. This article presents one such example: It appears that Korihor usurped the words of Zeniff, quoting some of them for his own purposes. The context of this reference to Zeniff’s words lies in Korihor’s claims that the Nephites were in bondage to the priests, just as the Lamanites wanted to bring Zeniff’s people into bondage. The connections between these two passages cross multiple generations and narrative events internally, and multiple pages of translated, dictated manuscript by Joseph Smith. It …

While ethanol is an effective antimicrobial agent, its carcinogenic and cytotoxic effects raise some concerns. This paper examines ethanol and acetaldehyde exposure, its toxicity, and its effects on oral health. In this work, Tamarindus indica (T. indica)-loaded crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/cellulose acetate (CA)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrospun nanofibers were designed and fabricated for wound healing applications. T. indica is a plant extract that possesses antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antimalarial and wound healing properties. The researcher aligns her children's preschool experience with tailored art projects and hands-on activities centered around the tomato hornworm, Manduca quinquemaculata, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches, Gromphadorhina portentosa. A series of traps was deployed in four red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) stands in the Southern Appalachians to evaluate the presence of, and trap lure efficacy for, the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby, 1837). Although no spruce beetles were collected, more than 14,000 Polygraphus rufipennis (Kirby) were captured. Traps were baited with a variety of lure combinations that demonstrated a strong attraction of P. rufipennis to frontalin, a relationship not previously reported. While theological definitions of holiness incorporate purity terminology among several metaphors, the challenges resident in using this language may well impede opportunities of engaging difference and reconciliation. Wesleyans need a “Plain Account” of Christian purity to guide both ecclesial discussions that stress not only strengths, but also limits, in purity thinking. Using an example involving the Church of the Nazarene and Pentecostalism, the writing reveals how purity thinking risks creating “Berlin walls” when engaging differences. The analysis argues that a moral fear of degradation, rather than an acknowledgment of difference, often pushes purity thinkers to oppose certain issues.

Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), a cariogenic bacterium, employs its adherence and acid-tolerant capabilities to collaborate with other bacteria in invading host cells, thereby promoting oral squamous cell carcinoma and other extra-oral diseases. This study examines the effects of simple enrichment on the behaviors of animals at the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Wildlife Park. Animals included are all non-releasable for various reasons and consist of a Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus), two red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), two gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), two Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi), and a bobcat (Felidae rufus Floridanus). The behaviors of these animals were observed with and without a box.
