This project aims to provide the future of queer activists of this campus a better picture of the roots of activism on this campus. I think of this project as my own personal version of The Celluloid Closet, but instead of old movies it's old Northern Iowan articles. There has always been resistance at UNI, and this document hopes to show that resistance. It is however by no means complete, as often resistance has to occur in the shadows. What this work is hours and hours of searching the archives of The Northern Iowan, for those brief snapshots …

The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (Swbs) As An Indicator Of General Well-Being, Rodger K. Bufford, Jessica Cantely, Jaycee Hallford, Yadira Vega, Jessica Wilbur
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Developed in the context of the subjective well-being movement in the 1970s, the Spiritual Well -Being Scale (SWBS) has stood the test of time. It was conceived within a theistic tradition and embodied the sense of well-being suggested in Biblical texts. The Old Testament greeting and blessing, shalom, seems to convey well the underlying concept of well-being. In this chapter we explore the empirical support and practical significance of the SWBS as a measure of well-being using the notion of biopsychosocial health as proposed by Engel and adapted by Sulmasy to include a religious/spiritual (R/S) dimension as well. Since the …

Background: Approximately 16.5% of U.S. young adults have a cannabis use disorder (CUD) and are at risk for negative outcomes. Treatment can reduce cannabis use, but young adults are less likely to seek help than older adults. Peer Network Counseling-txt (PNC-txt) is a brief, text-delivered, Motivational Interviewing-informed substance use intervention focusing on peer relations and activity spaces as mechanisms for behavioral change. PNC-txt has shown evidence of reducing tobacco and cannabis use with adolescents and young adults, but it has not been tested in the context of legal cannabis use. The current randomized controlled trial sought to expand the evidence …

This study investigates the development and application of monitoring equipment for sound vibration in neuroscience, focusing on its effects on high school students' academic performance and psychological well-being. The premise of the research is based on the phenomenon where sound vibrations from speech induce vibrations in the cranial bones, which is hypothesized to improve cerebrospinal fluid circulation, thus enhancing nutrient exchange within brain tissues. This enhancement could potentially elevate cognitive capabilities, academic achievements, and reduce psychological stress among students.
To verify the effects of sound vibration on learning outcomes, controlled experiments were performed in schools located in Beijing and Henan, …

Timing, a critical aspect in social contexts and human cognition, has been extensively studied across diverse fields, such as biology, neuroscience, and business. However, there is a lack of interdisciplinary approaches that offer fresh perspectives on how timing works. Music performance, being inherently temporal in nature, presents a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and explore timing mechanisms in a multifaceted context. This research explores how professional musicians understand and utilize timing in their training and artistic development, and how these insights can be applied to business contexts, bridging the two fields to understand timing more comprehensively. Through a qualitative …

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet B (UVB) from sunlight represents a major environmental factor that causes toxic effects resulting in structural and functional cutaneous abnormalities in most living organisms. Although numerous studies have indicated the biological mechanisms linking UVB exposure and cutaneous manifestations, they have typically originated from a single study performed under limited conditions.
METHODS: We accessed all publicly accessible expression data of various skin cell types exposed to UVB, including skin biopsies, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts. We performed biological network analysis to identify the molecular mechanisms and identify genetic biomarkers.
RESULTS: We interpreted the inflammatory response and carcinogenesis as major UVB-induced signaling …

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is recognized as a precursor to Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder of the brain. The neurodegeneration of brain connectivity networks plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of MCI. Traditionally, brain networks are generated using coarse-grained brain regions, where the regions serve as nodes and their functional or structural connections are used as edges. Recently, a novel finer scale brain folding patterns named 3hinge gyrus (3HG) was identified, which is defined as the conjunctions coming from three directions on gyral crests. 3HGs have been shown playing an important role in …

The adoption of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has sparked considerable interest across diverse industries, including public transportation, underground mining, and agriculture sectors. However, CAVs' reliance on sensor readings makes them vulnerable to significant threats. Manipulating these readings can compromise CAV network security, posing serious risks for malicious activities. Although several anomaly detection (AD) approaches for CAV networks are proposed, they often fail to: i) detect multiple anomalies in specific sensor(s) with high accuracy or F1 score, and ii) identify the specific sensor being attacked. In response, this paper proposes a novel framework tailored to CAV networks, called CAV-AD, for …

Tuning Selectivity Of Ni/Al2o3 Catalysts In Co2 Hydrogenation By Addition Of N, S-Doped Carbon, Nipitpon Jarumalai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the enhancement of Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation by incorporating nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon (NSC). A series of catalysts Ni/Al2O3 and its NSC-modified counterparts (Ni1NSC/Al2O3, Ni3NSC/Al2O3, Ni7NSC/Al2O3, and Ni15NSC/Al2O3) were synthesized via thermal treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere and systematically characterized. Techniques including TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS confirmed successful NSC incorporation. Further structural and surface analysis using TEM, XRD, CO-IR, CO2-TPD, H2-TPD, and H2-TPR revealed that NSC modification influenced Ni dispersion, surface basicity, hydrogen activation, and the electronic state of Ni species. Catalytic performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor under a CO2:H2 ratio of …

The Role Of Ferroptosis In Cholangiocarcinoma, Apiwit Sae-Fung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive malignancy of the bile ducts, characterized by a poor prognosis and high mortality rate. Despite advancements in treatment, effective targeted therapies and reliable prognostic biomarkers remain limited. Ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target in various cancers. However, its role in CCA remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) to predict the prognosis of CCA and identify potential therapeutic targets. Using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis on a training dataset, followed …

Effects Of Endomycorrhizal Fungi On Lemon Balm Plant Growth, Makenzie Boylston, Katie L. Davis, Emily L. Garner, Jackson Whiteside, Angela D. Panvini
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Mycorrhizal fungi benefit plants by enhancing nutrient uptake through the plant roots in exchange for sugars from the plant itself. There are two main types: endomycorrhiza, and ectomycorrhiza. Endomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, which can enhance nutrient uptake, stress resistance, and overall plant growth. This study aimed to determine the effects of endomycorrhizal fungi on the growth and development of Melissa officinalis (lemon balm), a medicinal herb known for its antimicrobial and calming properties. A control group of six plants with no fungal fertilizer and an experimental group of six plants inoculated with endomycorrhizal fungal fertilizer were …

Stress Physiology Of Bats: Methodological And Biological Studies Using Hair Cortisol, Marcus Jorgensen
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stress physiology in bats can be studied through various non-invasive methods, with hair cortisol levels being a particularly valuable measure. Hair cortisol analysis provides insights into the long-term stress levels and physiological states of bats, as it captures cortisol accumulation over time. This method helps researchers understand how different stressors and environmental factors impact bat populations. In mydissertation, I focused on assessing the validity and reliability of hair cortisol measurements in bats and explored the implications of these measurements for understanding bat stress physiology. In the first chapter, I evaluated the use of commercial enzyme immunoassay kits to measure cortisol …

The Protective Role Of Melanin Within The Teleost Inner Ear, Gabriel Heckerman
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Melanin is the dark pigment responsible for influencing the color of bodily structures, and it is variably present throughout human and animal tissue. Melanin is also found within the mammalian inner ear, and it has been observed that a lack of melanin is associated with greater susceptibility to sensorineural hearing loss. In this study, melanin levels of the inner ears of different color morphs of the fish species Poecilia latipinna and Cyprinus carpio were measured and the potential protective role of that melanin from acoustical stress was examined. Previous research showed that black morphs of both species exhibited less noise-induced …

Pandemic Pathways: An Integrated Approach To Studying The Pandemic’S Employment Impacts On Paid And Unpaid Care Of Children 0 To 11 Years Old, Johanna S. Quinn
Sociology Faculty Publications
The pandemic adversely affected the employment of child caregivers, exacerbating already existing inequalities. The authors offer an integrated framework that considers the interdependencies between unpaid and paid child caregiving and the construction of the childcare sector as a devalued and fractionalized group. The authors outline the prepandemic positioning of mothers, childcare teachers, preschool teachers, and primary school teachers. Then, using cross-sectional and panel data from the Current Population Survey, the authors describe how the pandemic affected these four groups of child caregivers’ employment between January 2018 and December 2022. Black, Brown, and non-college-educated mothers were hit particularly hard during the …
