This undergraduate senior thesis project aims to investigate the question of how Americans perceive the challenges posed by Russia and China comparatively, and which factors have the greatest influence on these perceptions. This is important for many reasons, such as a greater understanding of American public opinion on foreign affairs that may help frame approaches to U.S. foreign policy. Additionally, finding where the American public agrees and disagrees on competitors and challengers provides us with insight that can be used to explain perceptions.

This article examines the negotiation of sexual and religious identities among Catholic members of the LGBTQ+ community. I explore context-specific identity negotiation to determine how and why, in a time of “cultural warfare” within the Catholic Church surrounding the acceptance of LGBTQ+ participants, LGBTQ+ members choose to convert to Catholicism. Through semi-structured interviews conducted with members of the LGBTQ+ community, I identify and discuss several themes based on the identity integration process of these individuals: (1) Experiencing “The Call” (the initial interest in Catholicism), (2) Encountering the Religious “Other” (association with a welcoming and enduring Catholic LGBTQ+ Community), (3) Immersion …

Spider beetles are a poorly known group of North American beetles in the family Ptinidae. Protection of biodiversity requires knowledge of species- and population-level distinctiveness, so data regarding genetic structure of spider beetles can shed light on conservation priorities. Spider beetles in the genus, Coleotestudus, are distributed broadly in the southwestern US. Given their small size and lack of flight, it is presumed that the dispersal capability of Coleotestudus is limited, leading to strong population structure on a small spatial scale. We used a three-enzyme restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (3RAD) strategy to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) throughout the genome …

Legionella pneumophila an intracellular, opportunistic pathogen that is the causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. A key component of Legionella’s pathogenicity is a series of effector proteins, which aid in the establishment of the Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV). The abundant library of effector proteins L. pneumophila has within its arsenal gives L. pneumophila the ability to infect several different hosts. The pathogenesis of L. pneumophila within various hosts depends on its ability to modulate the activity of its effector proteins through protein-protein interactions within effectors and eukaryotic host cell proteins. Deciphering The Double-Edged Action Of Sting Pathway In Cancer, Neelabh Datta

Cancer cells have unstable chromosomes and damaged DNA, which can activate the cellular alarm system cGAS-STING. This mechanism detects DNA in the incorrect location (the cytosol) and produces type I interferons, which can recruit immune cells to combat cancer. However, certain tumours can bypass or use this mechanism for their own benefit. This short article examines how cGAS-STING influences the different cells of the tumour microenvironment (TME), and how it can have both anti-tumour and pro-tumour effects. It also demonstrates how additional STING signals can cause inflammation and contribute to cancer growth. To employ cGAS-STING against cancer, it is critical …

It allows them to build, operate, and manage a society of cells with complex organizational structures, where autonomous components execute specific tasks and collaborate in groups to fulfill systemic goals with shared knowledge. The system receives information from various senses, makes sense of what is being observed, and acts using its experience while the observations are still in progress. Digital machine intelligence has evolved from its inception in the form of computation of numbers to AI, which is centered around performing cognitive tasks that humans can perform, such as predictive reasoning or complex calculations. The state of the art includes tasks that are easily described by a list of formal, mathematical rules or a sequence of event-driven actions such as modeling, simulation, business workflows, interaction with devices, etc., and also tasks that are easy to do “intuitively”, but are hard to describe formally or as a sequence of event-driven actions such as recognizing spoken words or faces. The Nondual Realization Of Advaita Vedanta Does Not Support A Psychological Theory Of Consciousness, Glenn Hartelius

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Advaita Vedanta is seen as something of an authoritative source for nondual philosophies and theories of consciousness that postulate a pure featureless awareness at the base of mental experience. These approaches deviate from both the lineage-based teachings of Advaita Vedanta and the necessary standards of science, constructing compromises that fall short of traditional fidelity and psychological rigor. Dialogues between psychology and Advaita Vedanta need to delineate clearly between a sensate phenomenology of experience and spiritual interpretations that may be implicit within experiential descriptions.

Smokable "Vine Of The Dead": Two Case Studies Of Experiencers Of Both Changa And Near-Death Experiences, Pascal Michael, David Luke, Oliver Robinson

Introduction: Virtually no studies have looked at psychopharmacological combinations as models of the near-death experience (NDE), which is inadequate given the evidently complex neurochemistry occurring near- or at death. An example of such a combination is "changa," a smoked mixture of the psychedelic N,N-DMT and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)-containing plants, and as such has been referred to as "smokable ayahuasca" (vine of the dead). Only very few studies, yet not systematically, have included experiencers of both NDEs and psychoactive substances. Transpersonal psychotherapy (TPT) lacks systematization, as it lacks a model that

characterizes what qualifies a psychotherapy as transpersonal. Due to this situation, TPT

has been developed in a state of fragmentation, through a multiplicity of idiosyncratic

approaches. This idiosyncratic fragmentation jeopardizes the theoretical development

of the field, undermines the possibilities of obtaining a wider recognition, and hinders

the training and the research. To remedy this, this paper proposes a model of five

components which characterize TPT: (1) purposeful use of states of consciousness,

This study addresses the scientific tendency to misattribute the higher levels of belief in extrasensoryperception (ESP) of adult survivors of childhood trauma to cognitive errors whenthey may be a result of actual experience with ESP. Dissociative tendencies may contribute to precognition, which would be an adaptive skill for children living in unpredictable and traumatic environments. This study investigated the correlation between self-reported childhood abuse and neglect and precognitive abilities in 227 adults. The participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, comprising subscales measuring emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, and physical and emotional neglect, and completed four online tasks measuring …

Colic, characterized by excessive, inconsolable crying in early infancy, has long puzzled researchers and clinicians. Traditional approaches have predominantly relied on medical models, yet they have failed to provide satisfactory explanations or effective treatments. This blinded comparative qualitative study took a novel approach by asking: What are the womb and birth experiences of colicky babies in relation to the prenatal relational trauma between mother and fetus or within the fetal environment? The sample comprised 23 mother-child dyads, 10 children with a history of colic and 13 without, whose histories and interactions unfolded through 10 videotaped sessions of Experiential Play Therapy. …

This essay briefly explores this relationship between the understandings—existing and potential—of the right to “life” and the role of medical authority in constitutional abortion rights litigation. It proceeds as follows. Part I describes the dichotomy between two different understandings of “life” in U.S. legal discourse, with a particular focus on cases dealing with the so-called “right to die.” Part II then explains why this dichotomy is relevant in the post-Dobbs abortion rights context, as it holds the promise of an alternate path to protection for abortion rights at the federal and state levels. Recent studies suggest that permanent pacemaker implantation after tricuspid valve repair may be more common than previously thought. Our primary aim was to assess the rates of early (within 30 days of surgery) and late (more than 30 days after surgery) permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) after tricuspid valve repair (TVr) surgery. Our secondary aims included exploring risk factors for PPI after TVr and assessing outcomes.

We performed a retrospective analysis of 231 isolated and concomitant tricuspid valve repairs for primary and secondary tricuspid valve regurgitation at a single quaternary academic center performed from 2014–2022.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal complication of prematurity. Using small intestinal organoids derived from fetal tissue of a gestational age similar to an extremely preterm infant, this study aims to assess the effect of diet on intestinal epithelial growth and differentiation to elucidate the role nutrition type plays in intestinal development and modifies the risk for NEC.
