Psychological Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic In A Hispanic Sample: Testing The Buffering Role Of Resilience And Perceived Social Support, Michiyo Hirai, Laura L. Vernon, Elizabeth N. Hernandez

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

The current study examined the effects of specific COVID-19 stressors (i.e., family member’s death due to COVID-19, COVID-19 infection, and school/financial stressors) on stress, anxiety, and depression and the potential buffering roles of resilience and perceived social support in the association between COVID-19 stressors and psychological symptoms in a Hispanic university student sample (n = 664). Participants were classified in three stressor groups: those reporting a family member’s death due to COVID-19 (15.7%), those reporting their own or a family member’s COVID-19 infection but no COVID-19 death (35.5%), and those reporting only school and/or financial stressors due to the …

Stereotactic Mr-Guided On-Table Adaptive Radiation Therapy (Smart) For Borderline Resectable And Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer: A Multi-Center, Open-Label Phase 2 Study, Michael Chuong, Kathryn Mittauer

All Publications

Background and purpose: Radiation dose escalation may improve local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) in select pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients. We prospectively evaluated the safety and efficacy of ablative stereotactic magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiation therapy (SMART) for borderline resectable (BRPC) and locally advanced pancreas cancer (LAPC). The primary endpoint of acute grade ≥ 3 gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity definitely related to SMART was previously published with median follow-up (FU) 8.8 months from SMART. We now present more mature outcomes including OS and late toxicity.

Materials and methods: This prospective, multi-center, single-arm open-label phase 2 trial (NCT03621644) …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a progressive neurodevelopmental disorder, and pathogenic Methyl-CpG-binding Protein 2 (MECP2) variants are identified in >95% of individuals with typical RTT. Most of RTT-causing variants in MECP2 are de novo and usually on the paternally inherited X chromosome. While paternal age has been reported to be associated with increased risk of genetic disorders, it is unknown whether parental age contributes to the risk of the development of RTT. Clinical data including parental age, RTT diagnostic status, and clinical severity are collected from 1226 participants with RTT and confirmed MECP2 variants. Statistical analyses are performed using Student t-test, …

Investigating The Mass Mortality Induced Factors Of Pearl Oyster (Pinctada Radiata) At Abu Dhabi Pearls Farm, Uae, Hamad Ahmed Almansoori

Theses

The aquaculture of shellfish plays a crucial role in enhancing maritime environments by mitigating algal blooms and improving water quality through the filtration of organic matter, nutrients, and bacteria. This study investigated the environmental factors influencing oyster (Pinctada radiata) mortalities through a comprehensive analysis of water quality in Al Mirfa and Al Mughirah farming sites of Abu Dhabi (UAE), from February 2021 to February 2022. To reach such understanding of the main factors led to mass mortalities of cultivated oysters, different monthly sampling and both chemical and biological analyses of the farm water, sediments as well as for both living …

Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is projected to become the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Limitations in early detection and treatment barriers contribute to the lack of substantial success in the treatment of this challenging-to-treat malignancy. Desmoplasia is the hallmark of PDAC microenvironment that creates a physical and immunologic barrier. Stromal support cells and immunomodulatory cells face aberrant signaling by pancreatic cancer cells that shifts the complex balance of proper repair mechanisms into a state of dysregulation. The product of this dysregulation is the desmoplastic environment that encases the malignant cells leading to a dense, hypoxic …

Sparse Bayesian Variable Selection In High‐Dimensional Logistic Regression Models With Correlated Priors, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Zifei Han, Souparno Ghosh, Liucang Wu, Min Wang

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a sparse Bayesian procedure with global and local(GL) shrinkage priors for the problems of variable selection and classification in high-dimensional logistic regression models. In particular, we consider two types of GL shrinkage priors for the regression coefficients, the horseshoe (HS)prior and the normal-gamma (NG) prior, and then specify a correlated prior for the binary vector to distinguish models with the same size. The GL priors are then combined with mixture representations of logistic distribution to construct a hierarchical Bayes model that allows efficient implementation of a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to generate samples from …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Observational epidemiological studies have reported a relationship between remnant cholesterol and stroke. However, the results are inconclusive, and causality remains unclear due to confounding or reverse causality. Our objective in this study was to investigate the causal relevance of remnant cholesterol and the risk of stroke and its subtypes using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) including 115,082 European individuals (UK Biobank) were used to identify instruments for remnant cholesterol, including intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) cholesterol and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. Summary-level data for total stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic stroke (IS), and IS subtypes were obtained …

Accessing Reactive Metal Hydrides Through Designed Heterometallic Bridges, Fernando Gonzalez, Edgardo De Leon, Manar M. Shoshani

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

A methodology to access reactive hydride moieties is highly desirable, yet limited. Multimetallic hydride fragments are notable for their heightened reactivity and catalysis, but deliberate access to these species is lacking. In this highlight, we discuss recent developments by our group in the design of a new heterometallic complex that invokes an architecture designed to provide modular access to reactive hydride moieties by leveraging metal hydrides in combination with pendent donors to a model heterotrimetallic Ni–(Al–H)2 complex. An amplification of insertion-based reactivity has been examined in the hydrofunctionalization of quinolines, and our complex substantially outperformed the parent aluminum hydride LAlH …

Self-Ambivalence: Naming A Contemporary Work–Family Problem That Has No Name, Jenny M. Hoobler, Courtney R. Masterson, Kristie M. Rogers

Management Faculty Research and Publications

As workers and family members, individuals ought to celebrate seemingly positive events (e.g., a promotion and the purchase of a home). Yet, the numerous identities that contemporary workers hold increase the likelihood of an event that is pleasant in one domain being problematic in another and more cognitively and affectively complex than anticipated. We theorize that these events are likely to prompt self-evaluations that are positive (“I'm a success!”) and negative (“I'm a failure.”) across one's identity set, with questions such as “Who have I become?” and “Is this who I ought to be?” The result is self-ambivalence, that is, …

Effect Of Chloropicrin And Metam Sodium On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In California Strawberry Production, Colin Timothy Koubek Feb 2024

Effect Of Chloropicrin And Metam Sodium On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In California Strawberry Production, Colin Timothy Koubek

Plant Sciences

California strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) bring in ~3 billion yearly for the state's economy. Strawberry growers use fumigants like chloropicrin and metam sodium to manage a variety of soilborne diseases in conventional production. The yield-boosting effects of fumigation on strawberries are often attributed to disease management, but the ‘fertilizer effect’ from mineralization may play an equally significant role. This experiment conducted in a grower field sought to find out the influence that fumigation had on the mineralization of soil organic nitrogen and if preplant fertilizer application affected early season nitrogen (N). There were six treatments: control, control with controlled …
