Beyond ‘Heightism’ And ‘Height Premium’: An Anthropology And Sociology Of Human Stature, Gideon Lasco
Beyond ‘Heightism’ And ‘Height Premium’: An Anthropology And Sociology Of Human Stature, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
This review article examines the meanings and materialities of human stature, from serving as a marker of human difference to shaping the socio-spatial experiences of individuals. I introduce existing perspectives on height from various disciplines, including biomedical discourses on the factors (e.g. nutrition, genetics) that determine height, economic discourses on how the average heights of populations have changed over time, sociobiological and psychological discourses that assume a pre-cultural, evolutionary “height premium”, and popular discourses on heightism and height discrimination. Drawing from a diverse range of scholarship since Saul Feldman called for a “sociology of stature” in the 1970s, I then …

Mitochondrial Quality Control By Tail-Anchored Proteins, Jose M. Delgado
Mitochondrial Quality Control By Tail-Anchored Proteins, Jose M. Delgado
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Autophagy is a lysosome-mediated pathway responsible for the degradation of unwanted cytosolic content. During autophagy, cytoplasmic components are enveloped by a newly generated vesicle (the autophagosome), trafficked to the lysosome, and degraded. The power of autophagy lies in its ability to selectively target specific substrates for degradation—a phenomenon known as selective autophagy.
Specialized proteins known as selective autophagy receptors play a crucial role in identifying and targeting autophagy cargo. Although historically overlooked as potential regulators, our understanding of autophagy receptors is evolving beyond the assumption that receptors merely bridge targets to pre-formed autophagosomal membranes. Previous insights were often based on …
Targeting Strategies To Optimize The Therapeutic Potential Of Gold Compounds Against Her2-Positive Breast Cancers, Afruja Ahad
Targeting Strategies To Optimize The Therapeutic Potential Of Gold Compounds Against Her2-Positive Breast Cancers, Afruja Ahad
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The overexpression of HER2 accounts for 20-30% of breast cancer tumors and not only serves as a marker for poor predictive clinical outcomes but also as a target for treatment. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) combine the selectivity of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs to provide targeted treatment without toxicity to normal tissue. Most of the ADCs currently in the clinic for cancer chemotherapy are based on complex organic molecules. In contrast, the conjugation of metallodrugs to mAbs has been overlooked when there is enormous potential in this area with the resurgence of metal-based drugs as prospective cancer …

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression by associating with regulatory sequences in the untranslated regions of mRNAs. Cold-inducible RBP (CIRP) is a stress-induced RBP that was recently shown to modulate inflammation in response to cellular stress, where it increases or decreases pro-tumorigenic (proinflammatory) cytokines in different contexts. CIRP expression is altered in several cancers, including breast cancer, but the effects of CIRP on inflammation in breast cancer is not known. Here, we investigate if CIRP alters growth and the inflammatory profile of breast tumors. Transgenic mice overexpressing CIRP in the mammary epithelium were crossed with the PyMT mouse …

Ras-Related Associated With Diabetes Genes For Biomarker-Based Therapeutics In Cancer: A Comparative Evolutionary Genomic Study, Mohammed A. Hakami
Ras-Related Associated With Diabetes Genes For Biomarker-Based Therapeutics In Cancer: A Comparative Evolutionary Genomic Study, Mohammed A. Hakami
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To compare Ras-related associated with diabetes (RRAD) across different species and to identify specific biomarkers for cancer therapy. Methods: The study involves comparing the coding sequences, genes, messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA), non-coding RNA, open reading frame, short- and long-sequence repeats, and transcription factors of RRAD genes from 82 species. Various tools and software are employed for these comparisons, and evolutionary analysis was carried out to understand the gene’s evolutionary history. The data are classified based on forward and reverse sequences. Results: Our analysis indicates that ACTG1 may function as a downstream effector of RRAD, offering potential avenues for diabetes …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Belinostat On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Stem Cells Via The Wnt, Notch, And Hedgehog Signaling Pathway, Zeliha Tuncer, Ercan Kurar, Tugçe Duran
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To evaluate belinostat’s (PXD101) activity on MCF-7 breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) via Wnt, Notch, and Hedgehog. Methods: This research study was carried out at the Department of Medical Biology, Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Turkey, from June 2017 to July 2019. The effect of PXD101 on MCF-7 cell viability was determined by cell proliferation kit (XTT). Following belinostat treatment, CD44+/CD24- MCF-7 CSCs were isolated by FACS. Ribonucleic acid isolation and copy-deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis were carried out using HEK-293 cells, MCF-7 cells, and MCF-7 CSCs. Expression changes of metastasis-related genes, Wnt, Hedgehog, Notch, and stem cell markers were analysed by …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
INTRODUCTION: Particle-induced osteolysis resulting from polyethylene wear remains a source of implant failure in anatomic total shoulder designs. Modern polyethylene components are irradiated in an oxygen-free environment to induce polyethylene cross-linking, but an unfortunate byproduct of this process is free radical production. Melting or heat annealing is one method of reducing free radicals but can compromise the component’s mechanical properties. The antioxidant, Vitamin E, has been introduced as an alternative adjuvant to neutralize free radicals. Specifically, in anatomic shoulder arthroplasty with a ceramic head component, the vitamin E-enhanced polyethylene showed improved wear compared to the conventional highly-cross linked polyethylene. This …
