Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The magnetic mesoporous silica material, Mag-MCM-41, was synthesized by coating magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles with a mesoporous material called MCM-41. Mag-MCM-41 and modified nanomaterials Mag-MCM-41-NN and Mag-MCM-41-NN-Fe+3 which were modified with aminopropyl functional groups. In water and wastewater, phosphate anions are considered significant contaminants due to their detrimental impact on the environment. They promote the growth of algae, leading to eutrophication. The purpose of this study is to investigate the removal of phosphate anions from aqueous solutions using modified magnetic silica particles. The Mag-MCM-41 material exhibits hexagonal properties and belongs to the class of “mesoporous” materials. It has a surface area …

An Efficient One-Pot And Simple Multicomponent Approach To The Synthesis Of Highly Functionalized Furans Containing Dialkyl Phenol, Fourogh Jalili Milani, Mahmoud Nassiri, Jaber Salehzadeh
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, arylglyoxals, acetylacetone, and 2,6-dimethyl phenol or 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol are combined to efficiently synthesize a series of 1-(4-(3,5-dialkylphenyl)-2-methyl-5-phenylfuran-3-yl) ethan-1-one derivatives in excellent yields. These reactions were carried out in acetone at reflux under catalyst-free conditions in the presence of triethylamine as a base for 3 h. NMR, FT-IR, EI-MS, and elemental studies were used to characterize the products' structural characteristics. The present study has also several benefits, such as excellent yields and the ease of workup procedure, making it an appealing, practical, and acceptable one-pot method for producing functionalized derivatives of dialkyl furan.

Voltammetric Measurement Of Catechol-O-Methyltransferase Inhibitor Tolcapone In The Pharmaceutical Form On The Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode, Musa Kiran, Yavuz Yardim
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This study presents an electroanalytical approach to measure the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor tolcapone (TOL) using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The application of cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique revealed that TOL exhibited a distinct, diffusion-controlled, irreversible anodic peak at a potential of approximately +0.71 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in a 0.1 mol L–1 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) with a pH of 2.5. The oxidation of TOL is highly dependent on the pH and supporting electrolytes. Based on the data obtained from the pH investigation, a proposed mechanism for the electro-oxidation of TOL is suggested. Using the square wave voltammetry (SWV) technique, a …

Alcohol-Mediated Changes In Myoblast Hif-1Α Protein Expression And Relationships With Decreased Differentiation Capacity: A Preliminary Analysis, Colby Newman, Alexandra Khartabil, Matthew Dileo, Zenaida Villalba, Danielle Levitt
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Alcohol-mediated myopathy, or decreased functional skeletal muscle (SKM) mass, is highly prevalent among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). SKM regeneration aids in maintaining functional SKM muscle mass. Using an in vitro (myoblast) model, we showed that alcohol (EtOH) treatment decreases differentiation capacity in association with decreased glycolytic function, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Hypoxia-inducible factor (Hif)-1α is a transcription factor that promotes glycolysis, the bioenergetic pathway that primarily supports myoblast energetic demands. EtOH can increase or decrease Hif-1α expression in various cell types, but this has not been assessed in myoblasts. PURPOSE: Test the hypothesis that alcohol …

Within-Day Reliability Of Submaximal Running Economy Testing, Garrett M. Oehlert, Eric J. Jones, Dustin P. Joubert
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Running economy (RE), a measure of oxygen consumption associated with a given intensity, has been identified as a critical component of endurance performance. Acute, same-day interventions, such as alterations in footwear, have been shown to significantly impact RE. Quantifying the reliability of within-day RE measures would determine minimal detectable differences that could be expected when testing footwear and other acute interventions. PURPOSE: Assess the within-day reliability of RE testing on a calibrated metabolic measurement system. METHODS: Trained male distance runners (n=10) were recruited to perform 4 × 5-minute trials under constant conditions (set speed and in their own …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cortisol (CORT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are two indicators of stress and are linked to tissue inflammation and illness. Increased stress and inflammation have been shown to decrease cognitive functioning, leading to diminished performance for athletes. Subjectively, athletes indicate fluctuations in stress, but few studies have assessed the physiological response of training and competition in elite female athletes. PURPOSE: The primary aim was to assess the acute response of CORT and CRP in Division I female lacrosse athletes during a high-stress week, including two games and three practices during the competitive season. The secondary aim was to assess the …

METHODS: In this study, 8 eumenorrheic females (mean±SD age: 33±8 years, BMI: 22.5±2.2 kg/m2; VO2max: 36.9±3.8 ml/kg/min) had resting energy expenditure (REE) and substrate utilization continuously measured with indirect calorimetry for 45 min at rest after an overnight fast, and for 3 h after a mixed meal (490 kcal, 53% carbohydrate, 31% fat, 20% …
Driving Entrainment Of Locomotor And Respiratory Systems To Determine Metabolic Efficiency, Michael T. Young, Jennifer M. Yentes, Kuanting Chen
Driving Entrainment Of Locomotor And Respiratory Systems To Determine Metabolic Efficiency, Michael T. Young, Jennifer M. Yentes, Kuanting Chen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Many biological rhythms, including breathing and locomotor rhythms, are interconnected through a phenomenon known as coupling. Locomotor respiratory coupling (LRC) is quantified using a ratio of stride cycles to breaths. For example, an entrained LRC ratio of two strides to one breathing cycle, is a typical ratio humans use while walking. While various ratios have been recorded, previous research has suggested that not deviating from a particular ratio is associated with low energy expenditure. However, recent research challenges the assumption that stronger LRC correlates with lower energy expenditure, but rather, LRC variability is associated with lower energy expenditure. In addition, …

Release Of Microrna15a/16 From Skeletal Muscle During Exercise Regulates Proteostasis In Muscle And Cancer, Patrick Ryan, Selina Uranga, James D. Fluckey
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Proteostasis, the intricate process of maintaining the proteome, is a critical matter for cellular health. The regulation of the multiple intersecting metabolic pathways comprising the proteostatic network is correspondingly complex and incompletely understood; however, a new and intriguing candidate in understanding this process has emerged in the form of microRNA (miRNA), small RNA species which are capable of regulating hundreds of genes at once by binding to and degrading mRNA transcripts. We have previously shown that muscle contraction results in the release of two miRNA species (miR15a/16) from skeletal muscles, and that a perfusate rich in these miRNAs slows growth …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 Max) is utilized to assess cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and performance in various populations. Although VO2max is the gold standard for assessing aerobic performance and CRF, the accessibility, time, and cost are limiting factors for frequent evaluation. Recently, skeletal muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) has been utilized to characterize the amount of oxygen available in skeletal muscle tissue and the efficiency of oxygen uptake and to serve as an alternative metric to assess CRF. However, minimal research has been conducted to observe the difference in SmO2 location placement between the vastus laterals (VL) and gastrocnemius (GS) during exhaustive …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a gradual loss of renal filtration and has been shown to be associated with lower levels of vitamin D (Vit-D). Vit-D is highly synthesized in the kidneys and is linked to multiple health conditions. Aerobic exercise of differing intensity and modality has shown potential in acutely improving Vit-D concentration in healthy and diseased populations. Purpose: To determine the influence of acute bouts of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and steady-state exercise (SSE) on Vit-D concentrations in individuals with moderate stages of CKD. Methods: A total of 13 participants (n = 7 women; n = 6 men; …

The Influence Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Vitamin-D Concentrations In Healthy Individuals, Leroy K. Bolden, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Ricardo Torres, Jeffery Heileson, Meena Meiyyappan, Jeff S. Forsse
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the world due to various factors (e.g., lack of sun exposure, dietary considerations). Currently the utilization of exercise may act as an intervention for VD deficiencies to promote increases in VD concentrations in healthy populations. This could largely be due to the loss of calcium from aerobic exercise (AE), leading to a hormonal response [(e.g., parathyroid hormone (PTH)] and the activation of cytochrome’s (e.g., CYP2R1, CYP27B1) responsible for the regulation of VD. Thus, AE may serve as an intervention to promote VD synthesis due to the impacted biological …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The increasing prevalence of conditions like sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, frailty, and cachexia emphasizes the need for reliable methods to estimate skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Data obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can be used within prediction equations to estimate whole-body SMM. However, limited data are available to inform the reliability of SMM estimates from prediction equations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the technical and biological error of SMM estimation across two DXA devices. METHODS: A sample of 18 generally healthy adults (11 F, 7 M; [mean ± SD] age 24.4 ± 8.7 y, body mass index …

The Use Of Livestock Gps Trackers To Determine The Grazing Patterns Of Herded And Free Ranging Cattle In The Communal Rangelands Of The Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, A. Finca, T. C. Zondani, J. T. Tjelele, M. P. Mavuso
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This study was set in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa which is predominantly rural and where livelihood sustainability is largely dependent on agricultural outputs including livestock production. Land in many of the rural, former homeland areas is held under communal land tenure which means access, utilisation and management is on a collective basis. A number of grazing strategies have been applied over the last hundred years including camp rotational grazing system. However, due to a number of factors including the absence of the communal rangeland and camp boundary fence, most villages do not have a rangeland management strategy …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Virtual fencing is an innovative technology for simplified, less laborious dynamic grazing management and remote animal monitoring. The effect of this novel technology on animal welfare is still a matter of debate. Previous research suggests no differences in stress experience responses of cattle between the two fencing systems on continuously stocked pastures. This study investigated differences in diet organic matter digestibility, livestock performance and fecal cortisol metabolite concentrations of heifers on pastures in a rotational grazing system, fenced with a virtual fence (Nofence, Batnfjordsøra Norway) compared to heifers fenced with a traditional electric wire fence. The study was conducted in …

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is a subtype of lymphoma with two-thirds of the cases presenting as lymph node enlargement. The remaining one third of NHL cases has been reported in the extra nodal sites, including the gastro-intestinal tract, Waldeyer’s ring, bone, skin and brain. Intraoral NHL is uncommon and may affect either the jaw bones or occur within the soft tissues of the oral cavity. Here we report an unusual case of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in a 54-year-old male patient who presented with a growth from the right lower molar extraction socket with pus discharge.

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma (PRMS) is a rare condition predominantly affecting the pediatric and adolescent population. In this case report, we discuss a 17-year-old male with a slow-growing, painless scrotal mass, ultimately diagnosed as embryonal PRMS — the most common and favorable rhabdomyosarcoma subtype. The report underscores the typical clinico-radiological presentation of PRMS and the pivotal part of histopathological evaluation in establishing a definitive diagnosis. Multidisciplinary intervention including surgery and chemoradiotherapy resulted in total remission. Therefore, this report underlines the significance of prompt diagnosis and comprehensive management in ensuring a favorable prognosis of PRMS.
