The Andes mountains of western South America are a globally important biodiversity hotspot, yet there is a paucity of resolved phylogenies for plant clades from this region. Filling an important gap in our understanding of the World's richest flora, we present the first phylogeny of Freziera (Pentaphylacaceae), an Andean-centered, cloud forest radiation. Our dataset was obtained via hybrid-enriched target sequence capture of Angiosperms353 universal loci for 50 of the ca. 75 spp., obtained almost entirely from herbarium specimens. We identify high phylogenomic complexity in Freziera, including the presence of data artifacts. Via by-eye observation of gene trees, detailed examination of …

Oxygenic photosynthetic organisms use Photosystem II (PSII) to oxidize water and reduce plastoquinone. Here, we review the mechanisms by which PSII is assembled and turned over in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. This species has been used to make key discoveries in PSII research due to its metabolic flexibility and amenability to genetic approaches. PSII subunits originate from both nuclear and chloroplastic gene products in Chlamydomonas. Nuclear-encoded PSII subunits are transported into the chloroplast and chloroplast-encoded PSII subunits are translated by a coordinated mechanism. Active PSII dimers are built from discrete reaction center complexes in a process facilitated by …

Microorganisms associated with plant roots significantly impact the quality and quantity of plant defences. However, the bottom-up effects of soil microbes on the aboveground multitrophic interactions remain largely under studied. To address this gap, we investigated the chemically- mediated effects of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia on legume-herbivore-parasitoid multitrophic interactions. To address this, we initially examined the cascading effects of the rhizobia bean association on herbivore caterpillars, their parasitoids, and subsequently investigated how rhizobia influence on plant volatiles and extrafloral nectar. Our goal was to understand how these plant- mediated effects can affect parasitoids. Lima bean plants (Phaseoulus lunatus) inoculated with rhizobia exhibited …

Feeding Behavior Of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) On Three Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas L. Cultivars Grown In Tarlac, Philippines, Jerah Mystica Novenario, Flor Ceballo-Alcantara
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Sweet potato is grown in tropical countries for its edible tubers, which have become an essential food source. It is usually propagated through vine-cutting, which can be obtained from harvested plants or nurseries intended for cutting production only. The recurrent use of vines may cause increased weevil infestation. The crop is known to be infested with insect pests. More importantly, the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, targets the tubers, thus, causing the economic losses. Sweet potato farmers in Tarlac claim that only one sweet potato cultivar is being attacked by C. formicarius, however, it was found in this experiment that …

Application Of The Analytic Hierarchy Process And Geographic Information System In Selecting Sites For A Seafood Market Study, Shielameh Peralta-Milan, Osamu Baba, Severino Iii Salmo
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Study site selection is essential for the success of many fisheries-related programs. A thorough site selection could provide transparency in the decision-making process and optimize resources. In this research, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach was used to select sites for a market study of reef-associated seafood in Alaminos City, Northwestern Philippines. Out of the 10 coastal barangays, four (Lucap, Sabangan, Telbang, and Victoria) were initially chosen, and the difference between these sites and the priority sites generated from AHP was examined. Five decision criteria and 10 alternatives (coastal barangays) were analyzed to calculate priority weights using pairwise comparisons. The …

Lit Jr., Cristian Lucañas, Joanne Langres, Lolita Dolores, Ruby Ana Laude, Merdelyn Caasi-Lit
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Samples of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) plants infected with witches’ broom disease were gathered from 13 provinces in the Philippines. Mealybugs were observed to occur in nine out of the 13 cumulative samples. The most predominant among several mealybug species observed was identified as Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel and Miller. P. jackbeardsleyi is not yet known to transmit phytoplasma, especially the one causing cassava witches’ broom (CWB). However, its occurrence in almost 70% of the CWB-infected samples provides circumstantial evidence that it may be related to the spread of the pathogen. This formal report of identification is in support of the …

Salamanders have relatively long life spans, comparable to much larger endotherms, due to indefinite regenerative potential, minimal senescence, cancer resistance, and low metabolic rates (Cayuela et al. 2019. Proc. R. Soc. B 286:20191498; Yun 2021. Cell Dev. Biol. 9:689062). Plethodon species have survived from 4 to 32 years in the field or captivity (Snider and Bowler 1992. Longevity of Reptiles and Amphibians in North American Collections. 2nd ed. SSAR Herpetol. Circ. 21:1–40; Staub 2016. Copeia 2016:118–123). Methods used for determining salamander longevity include size distributions over time, capture-mark-recapture studies (CMR), skeletochronology, and direct observations in captivity (Staub 2016, op. cit.).

An Exploration Of Bereaved Black And African American Youth’S Engagement With The Meaning Making Model Of Coping, Rachel Stobbe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The death of a parent in childhood is a profoundly distressing event, which often overshadows discussions about post-loss growth. Importantly, Black and African American youth have been historically overlooked in the grief literature, despite experiencing high rates of parental loss influenced by discriminatory systems of oppression. The current study employed reflexive thematic analysis to assess engagement with the Meaning Making Model of Coping (Park, 2010; Park & Folkman, 1997) among 15 parentally bereaved Black and African American youth (Mage = 13.07, SD = 2.22; 60% female). Six themes emerged and findings suggest that creating space for bereaved youth to openly …

The perception that cannabis (i.e., marijuana) use produces little to no harm is widespread, with about 70% of both pregnant and nonpregnant women believing there is slight or no risk associated with using cannabis once or twice a week. However, perinatal exposure to cannabis has been linked to externalizing behaviors in offspring, including impulsivity, hyperactivity, and substance use – behaviors associated with externalizing disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In preclinical research, most studies focus on exposure to the psychoactive constituent of cannabis, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆9-THC). ∆9-THC is lipophilic so it can cross the placental barrier and is secreted in maternal …

Gene Dosage Of Independent Dynein Arm Motor Preassembly Factors Influences Cilia Assembly In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Gervette M. Penny, Susan K. Dutcher
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Motile cilia assembly utilizes over 800 structural and cytoplasmic proteins. Variants in approximately 58 genes cause primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) in humans, including the dynein arm (pre)assembly factor (DNAAF) gene DNAAF4. In humans, outer dynein arms (ODAs) and inner dynein arms (IDAs) fail to assemble motile cilia when DNAAF4 function is disrupted. In Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a ciliated unicellular alga, the DNAAF4 ortholog is called PF23. The pf23-1 mutant assembles short cilia and lacks IDAs, but partially retains ODAs. The cilia of a new null allele (pf23-4) completely lack ODAs and IDAs and are even shorter than cilia from pf23-1. In …

Born To Equality: Minor Children, Equal Protection, And State Laws Targeting Lgbtq+ Youth, Nicholas Serafin
Born To Equality: Minor Children, Equal Protection, And State Laws Targeting Lgbtq+ Youth, Nicholas Serafin
UC Law Journal
States throughout the country are targeting LGBTQ+ youth, singling out transgender youth in particular. Part I of this Article provides an overview of laws targeting LGBTQ+ youth, and argues that many of these laws express animus towards and impose a stigma upon LGBTQ+ minor children. Though they are distinct doctrines, the Court has interwoven animus and stigma- based arguments throughout its gay rights jurisprudence to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from state action that imposes dignitary harm. Laws targeting LGBTQ+ youth often evince the same irrational hostility and stigmatizing purpose that the Court rejected decades ago.
Historically the Court’s LGBTQ+ jurisprudence has …

Assessing historical environmental conditions linked to habitat colonization is important for understanding long-term resilience and improving conservation and restoration efforts. Such information is lacking for the seagrass Zostera marina, an important foundation species across cold-temperate coastal areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Here, we reconstructed environmental conditions during the last 14,000 years from sediment cores in two eelgrass (Z. marina) meadows along the Swedish west coast, with the main aims to identify the time frame of seagrass colonization and describe subsequent biogeochemical changes following establishment. Based on vegetation proxies (lipid biomarkers), eelgrass colonization occurred about 2,000 years ago after geomorphological changes …
School Pronouns And The Compelled-Speech Objection, Phillip Seaver-Hall
School Pronouns And The Compelled-Speech Objection, Phillip Seaver-Hall
Mercer Law Review
America’s transgender youth are entrenched in a nationwide mental health crisis. A majority of transgender teenage boys have attempted suicide at least once, and roughly a third of transgender teenage girls have done the same. To mitigate this national emergency, many public school districts have begun requiring their teachers to use transgender students’ preferred names and pronouns. Many conservatives, however, insist that such rules violate the First Amendment’s prohibition of compelled speech.
This article thoroughly dissects that argument and exposes its flaws. It examines the compelled‑speech objection through the lens of the government speech doctrine, weighs countervailing academic‑freedom concerns, proposes …

Iiaas And The Montreal Protocol: The Legal Minefield Inside The Most Successful Environmental Treaty In History, Jackson Elder
UMKC Law Review
The most successful environmental treaty in history might break international law's core principle, and it all depends on who you ask. International law consists of rules and principles relating to states, international organizations, and individuals. The source of all international law is the consent of nations, and each nation is governed by the treaties they consent to. Provisions that force states to behave according to its text and do not satisfy international law's traditional consent standard are consequential. As no term exists for these provisions currently, these clauses have been termed as international imposed axiomatic alterations ("IIAA"s). IIAAs, for this …

Ptsd As Bodily Injury: Perspectives From Neuroscience And Medical Psychology, Jennifer Sweeton
UMKC Law Review
This Comment proposes that PTSD be reconceptualized, and reclassified, as a bodily injury in personal injury cases. In Part II, this Comment reviews the way courts describe PTSD in personal injury cases. Part III examines psychiatric literature and discusses the symptoms and classification of PTSD as both an emotional and medical condition. It also identifies several structural and functional brain alterations associated with PTSD, in addition to physiological changes that occur as a result of PTSD. Part IV asserts that the brain processes physical and emotional pain almost identically, and that most injuries include both emotional and physical components. In …
