Although still prevalent in many human societies, the practice of cousin marriage has precipitously declined in populations undergoing rapid demographic and socioeconomic change. However, it is still unclear whether changes in the structure of the marriage pool or changes in the fitness-relevant consequences of cousin marriage more strongly influence the frequency of cousin marriage. Here, we use genealogical data collected by the Tsimane Health and Life History Project to show that there is a small but measurable decline in the frequency of first cross-cousin marriage since the mid-twentieth century. Such changes are linked to concomitant changes in the pool of …

The purpose of this descriptive correlational quantitative study was to examine contributing factors of students and teachers affecting teacher self-efficacy and students' reading achievement in rural Oklahoma elementary schools in grades first through fifth. The contributing factors of students being analyzed included (a) poverty and (b) race or ethnic backgrounds. The teachers’ contributing factors include their self-efficacy levels on students' reading achievement, instructional strategies, classroom management, and student engagement levels. The proposed theory was that student and teacher variables beyond their control influenced teachers' self-efficacy levels in poverty-stricken classrooms. The study employed a quantitative approach, which used an online questionnaire …
The Myths Of Plato: Socratic Kenosis And The Call Of Beauty, Daniel Edward Shirley
The Myths Of Plato: Socratic Kenosis And The Call Of Beauty, Daniel Edward Shirley
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
The myths of Plato have been inordinately subordinated to the “intellect” of Plato since the eighteen-thirties. The ancient Christian tradition of interpreting stories and scriptures with symbolic understanding serves as a potentially primary hermeneutical pattern that could correct the modern tendency of subconscious materialism. To restore the Platonic myths, there are two foundational arguments to be made about the myths. The first is that these myths are kenotic in function. Observing the Socratic call to self-emptying, especially in the cosmological image of the World Axis, challenges modern assumptions concerning the second goodness of Platonic myth. The second argument is the …

Journal of Bioresource Management
Bio-calcification, also known as microbiologically induced calcite precipitation, is a phenomenon involving the activity of the enzyme urease. A large number of soil microorganism exhibit urease-producing ability. The main purpose of this review article is to signify the calcium carbonate bio-precipitation by Bacillus species including Lysinibacillus sphaericus and Bacillus subtilis. They both precipitated calcite and the shape and size depending on the external and internal conditions like the type of culture medium and the bacterial strains that were used. The research group increased attentions toward MICP (microbial-induced carbonated precipitation) because of its eco-friendly application. Different bacterial strains had been …

Journal of Bioresource Management
The primary reason for significant post-harvest losses globally stems from the infestation of insect pests. These beetles, as they progress through their life cycle, lead to the deterioration of stored food, capable of decimating an entire inventory within a remarkably brief timeframe. Quality control is a system that monitors product quality, assuring and detecting any spoilage of a product, the impact of infestation of flour by pairs of stored food pest insects E. kuehniella on quality flour was evaluated by physicochemical analyses over time. Provoked exposure of 200 g of flour to 5, 10, and 20 couples of Ephestia keuhniella …

Biomarkers For Managing Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lara Cheslow, Adam E. Snook, Scott A. Waldman
Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Neurological disorders are the leading cause of cognitive and physical disability worldwide, affecting 15% of the global population. Due to the demographics of aging, the prevalence of neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases, will double over the next two decades. Unfortunately, while available therapies provide symptomatic relief for cognitive and motor impairment, there is an urgent unmet need to develop disease-modifying therapies that slow the rate of pathological progression. In that context, biomarkers could identify at-risk and prodromal patients, monitor disease progression, track responses to therapy, and parse the causality of molecular events to identify novel targets for further clinical investigation. …

Fish is an important source of protein for millions of people around the globe and it's often a healthier option compared to some other meats. However, the fish industry is facing a storage challenge in the form of rapid spoilage and deterioration of freshness due to bacterial growth and enzymatic activity. The usage of oils in fish can enhance shelf life by creating a protective barrier. This research was designed to see the effects of thyme and almond oil on nutritional profile and shelf life of fish. The three fish species rohu (Labeo rohita), Mali (Wallago attu) …
Hesitation Towards The Covid-19 Vaccine In The United States: A Digital Ethnographic Study [Vacilación Ante La Vacuna Contra El Covid-19 En Estados Unidos De América: Un Estudio Etnográfico Digital], Rosalynn A. Vega
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Following the authorization of the use of COVID-19 vaccines in babies age 6 months through children 4 years old in the United States, some individuals (parents, pediatricians, and communicators) framed COVID-19 vac-cination as an issue of access, while many others expressed hesitancy, and some resisted recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this context, this study aimed to explore: 1) divergent reactions to the authorization of COVID-19 vaccine use in children aged 6 months to 4 years; and 2) opposing logics underlying attitudes towards pro-vaccination, anti-vaccination, and vaccine hesitancy regarding COVID-19 vaccines. To achieve this, a …

Autophagy and ribonucleoprotein granules, such as P-bodies (PBs) and stress granules, represent vital stress responses to maintain cellular homeostasis. SQSTM1/p62 phase-separated droplets are known to play critical roles in selective autophagy; however, it is unknown whether p62 can exist as another form in addition to its autophagic droplets. Here, we found that, under stress conditions, including proteotoxicity, endotoxicity, and oxidation, autophagic p62 droplets are transformed to a type of enlarged PBs, termed p62-dependent P-bodies (pd-PBs). p62 phase separation is essential for the nucleation of pd-PBs. Mechanistically, pd-PBs are triggered by enhanced p62 droplet formation upon stress stimulation through the interactions …

Inherited metabolic disorders are a group of genetic conditions that can cause severe neurological impairment and child mortality. Uniquely, these disorders respond to dietary treatment; however, this option remains largely unexplored because of low disorder prevalence and the lack of a suitable paradigm for testing diets. Here, we screened 35 Drosophila amino acid disorder models for disease-diet interactions and found 26 with diet-altered development and/or survival. Using a targeted multi-nutrient array, we examine the interaction in a model of isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency, an infant-lethal disorder. We show that dietary cysteine depletion normalizes their metabolic profile and rescues development, neurophysiology, …

Recent studies suggest that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) contribute to medulloblastoma (MB) formation and progression. We have identified an lncRNA, lnc-HLX-2-7, as a potential therapeutic target in group 3 (G3) MBs. lnc-HLX-2-7 RNA specifically accumulates in the promoter region of HLX, a sense-overlapping gene of lnc-HLX-2-7, which activates HLX expression by recruiting multiple factors, including enhancer elements. RNA sequencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation reveal that HLX binds to and activates the promoters of several oncogenes, including TBX2, LIN9, HOXM1, and MYC. Intravenous treatment with cerium-oxide-nanoparticle-coated antisense oligonucleotides targeting lnc-HLX-2-7 (CNP-lnc-HLX-2-7) inhibits tumor growth by 40%-50% in an intracranial MB xenograft mouse …

A Novel Machine Learning Algorithm Selects Proteome Signature To Specifically Identify Cancer Exosomes, Bingrui Li, Fernanda G Kugeratski, Raghu Kalluri
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Non-invasive early cancer diagnosis remains challenging due to the low sensitivity and specificity of current diagnostic approaches. Exosomes are membrane-bound nanovesicles secreted by all cells that contain DNA, RNA, and proteins that are representative of the parent cells. This property, along with the abundance of exosomes in biological fluids makes them compelling candidates as biomarkers. However, a rapid and flexible exosome-based diagnostic method to distinguish human cancers across cancer types in diverse biological fluids is yet to be defined. Here, we describe a novel machine learning-based computational method to distinguish cancers using a panel of proteins associated with exosomes. Employing …

Maternal immunoglobulins of the class G (IgGs) protect offspring from enteric infection, but when, where, and how these antibodies are physiologically generated and confer protection remains enigmatic. We found that circulating IgGs in adult mice preferentially bind early-life gut commensal bacteria over their own adult gut commensal bacteria. IgG-secreting plasma cells specific for early-life gut bacteria appear in the intestine soon after weaning, where they remain into adulthood. Manipulating exposure to gut bacteria or plasma cell development before, but not after, weaning reduced IgG-secreting plasma cells targeting early-life gut bacteria throughout life. Further, the development of this anti-gut commensal IgG …

Dual chamber pacemakers are programmed to allow for AV synchrony. Whenever a patient with a dual chamber pacemaker with underlying sinus rhythm presents with AV dissociation, the lack of AV synchrony should be questioned. The authors present a case of new onset dyspnea diagnosed as pacemaker syndrome. The diagnosis was initially delayed due to underlying ventricular paced rhythm as misidentified as normal pacemaker behavior.

According to past research, political misinformation is prevalent within social media, where information often goes unchecked. Both liberals and conservatives tend to believe misinformation that supports their beliefs. Values emphasized also tend to differ by political orientation, with liberals being more concerned with issues of harm, fairness, and universalism, and conservatives, with loyalty, authority, purity, and self-reliance. This study examines whether misinformation susceptibility is influenced by which of these values the information appeals to. 136 participants read social media posts that either supported or did not support their party’s platforms and that appealed to one of the seven values. They …

The DNA of living organisms is packaged into chromosomes differently in different species, but typically following a standard set of "rules." Understanding how DNA can be packaged for different species provides a better understanding of life and the genetic rules that must be followed, and the "rules" that can be broken. Mitochondria are crucial subcomponents of cells, providing the energy for life. Mitochondria always have their own mtDNA. In our study, we have learned that chewing lice mtDNA differs from that of other animals by spreading the genes across 12 separate small, circular chromosomes instead of one large, circular chromosome. …

An Argument For Expanding Research On Quantitative Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Randall E. Groth
Numeracy
Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) traditionally has been used in research concerning prospective and practicing classroom teachers. This essay argues that PCK is also relevant to other professions including those advancing quantitative reasoning (QR). To illustrate, the case of PCK for teaching QR is considered. Those in fields such as public health, journalism, meteorology, and government increasingly find themselves responsible for helping the public understand an ever-growing amount of quantitative information that has a bearing on societal well-being. Several examples illustrate how such professionals’ responsibilities require knowing prevalent QR patterns in society, strategies for fostering sound reasoning, and the general nature …

Zygnematophyceae are the algal sisters of land plants. Here we sequenced four genomes of filamentous Zygnematophyceae, including chromosome-scale assemblies for three strains of Zygnema circumcarinatum. We inferred traits in the ancestor of Zygnematophyceae and land plants that might have ushered in the conquest of land by plants: expanded genes for signaling cascades, environmental response, and multicellular growth. Zygnematophyceae and land plants share all the major enzymes for cell wall synthesis and remodifications, and gene gains shaped this toolkit. Co-expression network analyses uncover gene cohorts that unite environmental signaling with multicellular developmental programs. Our data shed light on a molecular …
