This study examined the potential effects of sunscreen on coral health through a review of scientific literature. This is important because coral reefs hold a significant amount of the marine life in the ocean and contribute to the filtering of CO2 in our atmosphere.

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic chromosome structure differs. Generally, prokaryotes have a single circular chromosome, while eukaryotes have multiple linear chromosomes. It is widely hypothesized that linear eukaryotic chromosomes evolved and arose from circular prokaryotic chromosomes and were a perquisite for sexual reproduction.

The Highland Shiner, Notropis micropteryx, is a minnow species common in the Green, Cumberland, and Tennessee river drainages and usually inhabits rocky riffles (Eisenhour and Eisenhour 2004). Despite the Highland Shiner's prevalence in this area, little published information exists describing the life history of this minnow species. Although N micropteryx is a small fish, attention must be given to its biology, as changes in its abundance are likely to affect other members of its aquatic community. Population and life cycle fluctuations can also be a reliable indicator of greater ecosystem health.

lvermectin is used in dogs and cats as a preventive medicine against heartworms. It is also used as a treatment for other parasites. lvermectin can be administered through tablets, topical liquid or injectable liquid. Some dog breeds such as border collies or sheepdogs have a sensitivity to the medication. The only safe heartworm preventive collies can take is Interceptor. But why? This is because lvermectin and other heartworm preventives have the drug Loperamide in them. They put it in there to reduce gastrointestinal secretions. Notropis micropteryx, the Highland Shiner, is common in small to large streams of the Cumberland, Tennessee, and upper Green River drainages and usually inhabits rocky riffles. While their population size was assessed as stable by the IUCN in 2012, little is known about the age and growth of this minnow species. Carbonyl Sulfide (OCS) is a toxic gas produced during the refinement of oil, use of diesel engines, and as a byproduct of natural gas. Excess exposure can cause severe skin burns as well as breathing difficulties. Two approaches are available to remove this toxic chemical from the air: ( 1) to isolate the gas after it has been produced and released into the atmosphere or (2) to remove the gas as it is being produced during combustion. Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid-beta (AB) protein in the brain, which disrupts brain function and leads to cognitive decline. Current research focuses on finding ways to reduce AB plaques.

Withaferin A, a compound found in Ashwagandha, a medicinal herb, shows promise as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Studies suggest Withaferin A may target AB, potentially by mechanisms beyond its interaction with acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory and learning, but it's not the sole focus of current AB-targeting therapies.

The Spring River of southeastern Kansas is home to a diverse assemblage of 34 mussels, many of which are imperiled. Elevated metal concentrations that resulted from past mining for lead and zinc in the Tri-State Mining District historically imperiled Spring River mussels, but this threat has abated over the last 20 years. Ammonia pollution may have replaced the threat of metals however, with potentially severe consequences for Spring River mussels. Our objectives were to evaluate spatiotemporal trends in density and richness of Spring River mussels in relation to changing concentrations of metals and ammonia. Ticks serve as vectors for many disease-causing pathogens, particularly bacterial and rickettsial pathogens. Diseases such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rickettsiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Tularemia can result after bitten by ticks. These tick-borne diseases are more common in the Great Plains region than is recognized. The present study aimed to conduct a three-year long surveillance on various tick species in the mined land area in Cherokee County (KS) using dry ice bait as well as flag-drag technique. Nucleophilic additions to epoxides are an important class of reactions in organic chemistry which have found use in material science, as intermediates, and in the synthesis of biologically important compounds. Many nucleophiles add to epoxides via a SN2 mechanism at the least substituted carbon. However, under acidic conditions addition is at the most substituted carbon via a SN1 mechanism. Included within this class of reactions is the addition of carboxylic acids to epoxides using tetrabutylammonium bromide as the catalyst. The tallgrass prairie ecosystem once spanned more than 70 million hectares of what is now the Midwestern United States, including eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Yet, only 4% of the tallgrass prairie remains intact, making it one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America. Two of the most serious threats to the remaining tallgrass prairie are woody encroachment and invasive plant species. Enrichment, such as introducing obstacles or novel foods, enhances captive animals' quality of life by providing a stimulating environment the animal may not otherwise experience in a captive setting. We sought to determine if the introduction of a new food source (i.e., day old chicks) and a maze (i.e., plastic tube) would serve as good enrichment tools for a captive prairie kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster). Our hypotheses were that the kingsnake would preferentially consume the novel food source and choose to interact with the maze. How traits at multiple levels of biological organization evolve in a correlated fashion in response to directional selection is poorly understood, but two popular models are the very general “behavior evolves first” (BEF) hypothesis and the more specific “morphology-performance-behavior-fitness” (MPBF) paradigm. Both acknowledge that selection often acts relatively directly on behavior and that when behavior evolves, other traits will as well but most with some lag. However, this proposition is exceedingly difficult to test in nature. This autoethnographic dissertation research explores Critical White Studies (CWS) and racial trauma and their impact on Students of Color in a higher education setting. This study aims to challenge the deficit thinking of white educators who perpetuate racism in higher education. The relationship is examined to dismantle the white ideology of white educators who believe they have the same experiences of their Students of Color regardless of their own similar experiences. Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) is the enzyme that catalyzes the ninth step of the citric acid cycle, a regenerative step in the metabolism of glucose in which malate is converted to oxaloacetate. Conformational changes in the active loop region of MDH along with the coenzyme NAD+ drive catalysis. Previous studies suggested that mutating positively charged amino acids to negatively charged amino acids at residue 130 decreased the enzymatic activity of MDH. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of 12 classroom teachers in different public Montessori schools in four different geographical regions of the United States. The interview was designed to allow the teachers to describe their Montessorian approach regarding areas of safety, social interaction, and respectful classroom environments to support students who may be experiencing the consequences of childhood trauma. The theories that guided this study were Albert Bandura’s (1977) social cognitive theory and the humanistic or person-centered theory of Carl Rogers (Rogers & Kramer, 1995). In North America, protected native grasslands are typically burned in the spring, when native warm-season grasses are dormant, to reduce growth of invasive cool-season grasses; burn seasons historically included summer burns. Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy (MSP) is a global health concern, with approximately half of smoking women continuing this habit throughout pregnancy. Epidemiological studies link in-utero exposure to cigarette smoke to detrimental outcomes, including an increased risk of asthma and smoking initiation in the offspring. While epidemiological research has shown the negative impacts of MSP, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Epigenetic modifications, specifically DNA methylation (DNAm), have been suggested as a mediator of the association between MSP and adverse health outcomes in the offspring. MSP has been associated with alterations in offspring DNAm. There is, however, limited understanding of individual …
