Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez
Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a national and global public health crisis with no end in sight. While studies from animal models hint at widespread epigenetic and transcriptomic alterations of opioid drugs, the molecular consequences of long-term exposure to opioid drugs in human brain is still unclear, and human-centered translational models are necessary to discern the human cell type-specific effects of OUD.
Using postmortem brain Brodmann area 9 (BA9) from the UTHealth Brain Collection for Research on Psychiatric Disorders, I identified angiogenic gene networks perturbed in the RNA and protein of OUD subjects, as well as downregulation of many neuron-correlated …
Novel Roles Of Microtubule-Associated Tau In Radiation-Induced Brain Injury, Riya Thomas, Riya Thomas
Novel Roles Of Microtubule-Associated Tau In Radiation-Induced Brain Injury, Riya Thomas, Riya Thomas
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Injury responses in cells lacking proliferation capacity such as terminally differentiated neurons consists of complex mechanisms to ensure cellular homeostasis. Brain tumor patients undergoing radiation therapy experience cognitive impairments similar to those seen in patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the plethora of research into radiation effects on proliferating brain cells, the impact of radiation on differentiated, post-mitotic neurons, including their structural and functional alterations, remain largely elusive. However, microtubule-associated tau, an important partner of cytoskeletal structural stability emerges as a pivotal player in the radiation-induced neuronal injury response, demonstrating compartmentalized functions such as repair-centric mechanisms and synaptic homeostasis. This …

Conversations About Telehealth Eating Disorder Treatment: Participants Share Their Experiences, Rachel Allen Msw
All Student Scholarship
This phenomenological study explores the use of telehealth as a modality in the treatment of eating disorders through the lenses of feminist, standpoint, and social constructionist theories. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth was utilized to offer continuity of service at a local, urban eating disorder treatment program in the Northeast. Post pandemic, this modality continued for staffing and accessibility reasons. However, little is known about this treatment from the perspective of service recipients. Intensive semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with six adults who had completed the telehealth program to learn about individuals’ experiences with this modality. …
The Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Gordonia Terrae -Specific Bacteriophage Distribution And Diversity, Gt M. Moore
The Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Gordonia Terrae -Specific Bacteriophage Distribution And Diversity, Gt M. Moore
Biology Theses
Bacteriophages are viruses that infect a diverse range of bacteria, with certain strains serving medical and industrial significance. Actinobacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect Phylum Actinobacteria hosts including the environmentally abundant Gordonia terrae. Some species of Gordonia, including G. terrae, have also been isolated from human infections. The isolation and characterization of novel phages that can infect Gordonia can therefore be significant to both genomics and potential phage therapy. Actinobacteriophages that infect these bacteria have been isolated from soil environments, but optimal environmental parameters for isolation have not been fully evaluated. This study examined the relationships between environmental …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
It is a well-known fact that groups are the only algebraic structures having a single binary operation that is mathematically so perfect that it is impossible to introduce a richer structure within it. The main purpose of this study is to introduce the notion of the Pythagorean neutrosophic triplet (PNT) which is the generalization of neutrosophic triplet (NT). The PNT is an algebraic structure of three ordered pairs that satisfy several properties under the binary operation (B-Operation) " " . Furthermore, we used the PNTs to introduce the novel concept of a Pythagorean neutrosophic triplet group (PNTG). The algebraic structure …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Neutrosophy is a branch of philosophy proposed in 1998 by Romanian philosopher and mathematician F. Smarandache, which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutrality and its interaction with different spectra of ideas. Because it is a relatively new field, specific scientific production on this subject may be limited, but as it develops, new research and contributions are likely to emerge. This is why it is becoming more necessary to undertake studies to understand the evolution, impact, and scope of research, especially in a context where it had never been examined in depth before: in the Latin American region. This …

Bootstrapping For Estimating The Conservative Kill Ratio Of The Surrogate To The Pathogen For Use In Thermal Process Validation At The Industrial Scale, Arshpreet Kaur Khattra, Surabhi Wason, Kevin Thompson, Andy Mauromostakos, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, Jennifer C. Acuff
Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A surrogate is commonly used for process validations. The industry often uses the target log cycle reduction for the test (LCRTest) microorganism (surrogate) to be equal to the desired log cycle reduction for the target (LCRTarget) microorganism (pathogen). When the surrogate is too conservative with far greater resistance than the pathogen, the food may be overprocessed with quality and cost consequences. In aseptic processing, the Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists recommends using relative resistance (DTarget)/(DTest) to calculate LCRTest (product of LCRTarget and relative resistance). This method uses the mean values …

Gene Patents: Striking The Right Balance Between Incentive And Innovation, Josh Saul
Fordham Law Review
The U.S. Supreme Court held human genes to be unpatentable subject matter in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. The implications from this decision were, and to a large extent still are, unclear. However, in the decade since this decision, a number of studies have begun to shed light on the fallout of Myriad. This Note examines such studies and finds that they suggest a decline in investment and innovation in the biotech industry. In order to promote research and innovation in the field of genetics, this Note then advocates for legislative action to reestablish the …

This dissertation investigated the role of inshore habitats in the ecology of elasmobranch fishes, with a specific focus on the wider Khor Fardiah Region on the eastern site of Abu Dhabi City. Once the vulnerability of these environments to anthropogenic pressure and climate change is recognised, it is clear that nearshore environments are susceptible to adverse outcomes. Hence, this dissertation aims to provide informative data that can help in devising effective conservation strategies. The study used a multi-survey technique approach, including stereo-BRUVS, acoustic telemetry, and satellite tracking, in combination with local ecological knowledge to explore the species diversity and habitat …
Development Of A Model To Predict Maximum Crack Width And Spacing In Reinforced Concrete Beams Under Flexural Stress, Saeed Alghamdi
Development Of A Model To Predict Maximum Crack Width And Spacing In Reinforced Concrete Beams Under Flexural Stress, Saeed Alghamdi
Theses and Dissertations
Cracking in reinforced concrete structures is unavoidable due to the low tensile strength of concrete. Even though minimizing cracks on exposed concrete surfaces is significantly important from the aesthetics point of view, it is also very important for the durability and overall performance of the structure.
Flexural members must be designed to minimize cracking that may occur during the structure's service life. Even though there has been a lot of experimental work on crack width over the last several decades, a literature review reveals that researchers still can't agree on which variables are most important. Part of the reason for …
Optimization Of Coral Restoration Along The Florida Reef Tract, Raymond Barry Banister
Optimization Of Coral Restoration Along The Florida Reef Tract, Raymond Barry Banister
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, the reefs of Florida were dominated by two framework-building corals, Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata. However, these two populations have declined by 95% since the 1970s. The predominant contributors to the coral decline have been ocean warming and disease. In response to the decline, restoration organizations were established to improve survival, growth, and reproduction. Yet, there are gaps in current restoration practices and our knowledge of effective restoration techniques. This study uses large datasets to develop models that predict the most optimal locations for coral restoration in Florida and examines the relationships between the occurrence of wild acroporids …
Improving Static Cold Storage Life Of The Human Heart Before Transplant, Juan Sebastian Rodriguez Paez
Improving Static Cold Storage Life Of The Human Heart Before Transplant, Juan Sebastian Rodriguez Paez
Theses and Dissertations
Organ storage and transportation are critical steps for the success of organ transplantation. Static cold storage (SCS) of hearts for heart transplantation (HTx) remains the standard approach. However, SCS may involve damage to the tissue resulting from extended hypothermic preservation, potentially affecting organ viability. More over, the temperature distribution on and within the heart is unknown during heart transplantation. Therefore, there is an interest to study different stages of the heart transplantation process towards determining the 3D temperature distribution on and within the heart. There could be a possibility of having a hypothermic injury in different parts of the heart …
Modelling Terrestrial And Potential Extraterrestrial Photopigments Via Density Functional Theory, Dorothea Illner
Modelling Terrestrial And Potential Extraterrestrial Photopigments Via Density Functional Theory, Dorothea Illner
Theses and Dissertations
In the search for extraterrestrial life, biosignatures play a crucial role in identifying its putative traces. A commonly known and robust biosignature is the Vegetation Red Edge (VRE), which can be described as a sharp increase of reflectance observed from a planet and stems from the light absorption of photopigments in specific regions in the electromagnetic spectrum. For Earth, this VRE is known to occur around 700 nm, however, if the photopigments absorb light in different regions and have different structures the VRE could experience a wavelenght shift.
In this work, Chlorophyll a and a potential photopigment precursor called Phot0 …

Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is a global problem, and it is inevitable to detect cancerous cells at early stages. In recent years, microwave imaging technology has been widely applied in biomedical applications for its non-ionizing radiation. In this study, we design a micro-strip patch antenna with an inverted T-type notch in the partial ground to detect tumor cells inside the human breast. The size of the current antenna is small enough (18 mm × 21 mm × 1.6 mm) to distribute around the breast phantom. The operating frequency has been observed from 6–14 GHz with a minimum return loss of −61.18 dB …
Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models Based Accelerated Mri, Alexander Francis Bugielski
Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models Based Accelerated Mri, Alexander Francis Bugielski
Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a cornerstone in obtaining intricate visualizations of anatomy and physiological processes within the human body. However, its extensive scan duration not only causes patient discomfort but also increases the likelihood of motion-induced artifacts in the images. To address such a challenge, this study investigates deep neural network models for reconstructing high-resolution MRI images from noisy and significantly undersampled data in a supervised learning manner. Specifically, it compares three models: a conventional U-Net, a self-attentive U-Net, and an innovative probabilistic diffusion model that builds upon the self-attentive U-Net architecture. These models are evaluated on their ability …
