Multidisciplinary Literary Review: The Relationship Between Social Media And Empathy, Mayra E. Salgado
Multidisciplinary Literary Review: The Relationship Between Social Media And Empathy, Mayra E. Salgado
Honors Theses
This literary review examines the different psychological perspectives on the relationship between social media usage and empathy. Specifically, it discusses the association by expanding on the fields of cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and some evolutionary psychology. I define empathy and discuss its developmental journey, its cognitive functions, its neurobiological processes, its possible damage caused by social media usage, and its effects on physical and mental health. Lastly, I argue that research focusing on high levels of social media usage and its relationship with levels of empathy should focus on creating an elaborate longitudinal study to gain more information on …
Understanding Taf13 (Tata Box-Binding Protein-Associated Factor 13) Upregulation In Eukaryotic Cells, Selin Kaplanoglu
Understanding Taf13 (Tata Box-Binding Protein-Associated Factor 13) Upregulation In Eukaryotic Cells, Selin Kaplanoglu
Honors Theses
TATA-binding protein (TBP) and TBP-associated factors (Tafs) comprise RNA Polymerase II (RNA Pol II) pre-initiation complex. This universal component carefully controls the transcriptional initiation process. One of the Tafs, Taf13, also plays an important role in the regulation of RNA Pol II transcription initiation which is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans. It is found that Taf13 is overexpressed in cancer cells, although the exact mechanism that is responsible for this overexpression is unclear. Our hypothesis suggests that targeted degradation by the 26S proteasome via ubiquitylation [Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS)] may be the mechanism that regulates the stability of Taf13. To …
Elucidation Of The Overexpression Of Taf2 In Eukaryotic Cells, Morgan Osborn
Elucidation Of The Overexpression Of Taf2 In Eukaryotic Cells, Morgan Osborn
Honors Theses
Through several studies, Taf2 has been found to be upregulated in various cancer cells. However, the mechanism through which this increased expression of Taf2 occurs remains unknown. As evolutionarily conserved ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) maintains protein homeostasis for normal cellular function, we hypothesized that stability of Taf2 may be regulated by this UPS and this UPS may be dysregulated in cancer cells causing overexpression of Taf2. To test our hypothesis, we assessed the role of the UPS in the regulation of the stability of Taf2 by 26S proteasome-mediated degradation. To do so, we performed molecular experiments mainly through two steps: 1st …

Determining The Antimicrobial Activity And Permeabilizing Effects Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And Piscidins On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus And Vibrio Vulnificus, Christina Harris
Honors Theses
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are found in all organisms and have gained attention for their effectiveness against a variety of pathogens. Piscidins are AMPs that were discovered in mast cells of vertebrates, mostly within marine animals, and are an important part of the innate immune system due to their potent antimicrobial properties. Piscidin 1 (P1) and piscidin 3 (P3) are found within sea bass and have different antimicrobial activities. P1 exhibits strong membrane disruptive properties, while P3 goes through the membrane to the targeted DNA. These piscidins can experience metalation with copper (Cu2+) which enhances their antimicrobial activity in vitro (P1-Cu2+ …
A Study Of The Relationship Between Interoceptive Sensibility And Distress Tolerance In Community And College Samples, William Moore
A Study Of The Relationship Between Interoceptive Sensibility And Distress Tolerance In Community And College Samples, William Moore
Honors Theses
Interoceptive sensibility (IS) involves the detection, integration, and interpretation of internal bodily signals, primarily from cardiovascular, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal systems. Dysfunction in interoceptive processing has been increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant factor in numerous neurological, psychiatric, and behavioral disorders. This thesis aimed to elucidate the relationship between interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance, hypothesizing that individuals with heightened interoceptive sensibility may exhibit poorer distress tolerance, potentially influencing emotional regulation and maladaptive coping mechanisms. To explore these relationships, two studies have been conducted utilizing self-report measures of interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance in community and college samples. In a study of …

Exploring Interoception - An Essential Skill Of Exceptional Self-Leadership, Suzanne Dameron
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Research into interoception, the awareness of the body’s inner state, suggests that the body is the true star in the mind-body relationship. Interceptive findings suggest that when we pay attention to our physical sensations – twinges, tingles, a quickening heartbeat – we have a depth of information now available to us that enhances our self-awareness and self-leadership. This paper is the result of exploring the theory and practice of developing interoceptive awareness and its implications for self-leadership.

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This purpose of this project is to explore the concept of polarities. I have been using creative problem solving for years, but recently, I have come to realize that some of the complexities we face in our everyday lives are not actually problems to solve, but rather are polarities to manage (Johnson, 2014). By undertaking this project, I aimed to build my skill set around polarity management in order to help me develop in both my personal and professional spheres. This project allowed me to explore some of the literature of polarities as well as put the concepts into practice …
A Review Of Rheb Activation Of Mtorc1 And The Great Mystery Of One Missing Gef, Jack Gregory
A Review Of Rheb Activation Of Mtorc1 And The Great Mystery Of One Missing Gef, Jack Gregory
Senior Honors Theses
The mTORC1 pathway is involved in the regulation of cell growth and translation. The pathway has a complex web of activators and inhibitors to activate mTORC1. mTORC1 is regulated via a small GTPase called Rheb, which interacts directly with mTORC1. This GTPase and its GTPase activating protein (GAP), TSC1/2, have been widely studied to understand how the variety of regulators of mTORC1 interact with these proteins. Despite this, the guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) of Rheb has yet to be identified. This review broadly analyzes Rheb and mTORC1, their structures, regulations, and interactions, and explores the mystery of the missing …

Potential Abatement Of Bay Nettle (Chrysaora Chesapeakei) Blooms Through Polyp Removal Within Lagoon Communities In Barnegat Bay, Nj, Anthony Luca Tamberelli
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Jellyfish blooms have gained increased attention in recent decades due to their negative impacts on ecosystems and human activities. Urban development, pollution, and overfishing are some of many possible impacts that can bolster the frequency, duration, and intensity of jellyfish blooms. In Barnegat Bay, NJ, USA, the invasive bay nettle Chrysaora chesapeakei exerts top-down predation pressure on zooplankton, including ctenophores, hydrozoans, crustaceans, and ichthyoplankton. Bay nettle populations rely on hard substrates for larval settlement and polyp clonal growth. To determine whether abatement efforts targeted at bay nettle polyps can disrupt the life cycle and limit medusae populations, a three-year sampling …

Macrophage Polarization And Colorectal Cancer Immune Checkpoint Protein Expression., Anne Macleod
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The majority of patients with colorectal cancer do not respond to treatment with immunotherapy. Immunotherapy requires the expression of cell surface immune checkpoint proteins (e.g. PDL1) to exert its effect. Most (>85%) of colorectal cancers do not express these proteins and this contributes in part to the poor prognosis and survival in patients with advanced disease. The patients in which immunotherapy is a potential treatment option, are a genetic subtype known as mismatch repair deficient, and have demonstrated an excellent response to anti-PD-1/PDL1 immunotherapy. A key feature of mismatch repair deficient (MMRd) cancers is their immune cell rich tumor …

In-Training Explainability Frameworks To Make Black-Box Machine Learning Models More Explainable., Asuman Cagla Acun
In-Training Explainability Frameworks To Make Black-Box Machine Learning Models More Explainable., Asuman Cagla Acun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite ongoing efforts to make black-box machine learning models more explainable, transparent, and trustworthy, there is growing advocacy for using only inherently interpretable models for high-stake decision-making. Post-hoc explanations have recently been criticized for learning surrogate models that may not accurately reflect the actual mechanisms of the original model and for adding computational burden at prediction time. We propose two novel explainability approaches to address these limitations: pre-hoc explainability and co-hoc explainability. These approaches integrate explanations derived from an inherently interpretable white-box model into the learning stage of the black-box model without compromising accuracy. Unlike post-hoc methods, our approach does …

Two of every three persons living with dementia reside in low- and middle-incomecountries (LMICs). The projected increase in global dementia rates is expected toaffect LMICs disproportionately. However, the majority of global dementia care costsoccur in high-income countries (HICs), with dementia research predominantly focus-ing on HICs. This imbalance necessitates LMIC-focused research to ensure thatcharacterization of dementia accurately reflects the involvement and specificities ofdiverse populations. Development of effective preventive, diagnostic, and therapeu-tic approaches for dementia in LMICs requires targeted, personalized, and harmonizedefforts. Our article represents timely discussions at the 2022 Symposium on Demen-tia and Brain Aging in LMICs that identified the foremost …

Suspended Ion Exchange For Extensive, Low-Energy And N2o-Emission-Free Removal Of Nitrogen In Municipal Purification, Bailey Jones
Master's Theses and Capstones
In recent years, high concentrations of anthropogenic ammonia have been measured in surface and groundwaters in Europe which can devastate ecosystems due to eutrophication. Sources of this excess ammonia are fertilizers used in the agricultural industry and municipal wastewater discharge. Stricter regulations limiting the amount of ammonia a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) can discharge may be enacted soon to prevent ammonia’s negative effects. A major issue facing WWTPs in the Netherlands is that conventional biological treatment processes used by these facilities are not able to meet the proposed ammonia discharge regulations. These facilities must soon turn to chemical solutions and …
