Optimizing Pediatric Care: Bridging Gaps And Addressing Disparities For Children With Disabilities Or Medical Complexities Through Medication Therapy Management (Mtm), Phuongloan Hoang, Drew Mccanless, Seana-Pierre Williams, Rajat Sharma, Mariam-Sere Diaby, Lauren Callaway, Jihui Diaz

Research Day

INTRODUCTION

Children with disabilities and medical complexity require complex medication regimens that are challenging for caregivers when managing medication. We conducted a secondary meta-analysis using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to explore medication adherence disparities based on caregivers’ socioeconomic status. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and similar services have been shown to improve treatment adherence. We aim to investigate the utilization of MTM services among underprivileged communities by developing a structured survey for the target population and aim to examine whether caregivers’ socioeconomic status (SES) impacts medication adherence within our study cohort. Our ultimate goal is to improve …

Case Study: Lead Contamination Propagation Into Plants Of A Metro Atlanta Home, Jaci Carithers, Samantha Gowen, Mbill Khan, Gokbet Owusu-Poku, Francis Jenney

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: Lead pollution in residential areas of Metro Atlanta has spurred action from the EPA to increase efforts to remediate the contaminated soil, resulting in the designation of the Westside Lead Atlanta, GA Superfund site. Lead poses significant risks to human health, interfering with vital biological functions such as its mimicry and blocking of important calcium-dependent pathways. Contributing to this issue are the historic practices of lead-based industries with poor disposal practices, causing local soil and water pollution. This issue is evident particularly along historical railroad routes used for transporting heavy metal-laden industrial goods. The soil along these routes frequently …

What An Astronaut’S Gut Microbiome Must Feel In Space: Simulated Microgravity And Ionizing Radiation Changing Escherichia Coli’S Growth Dynamics., Parker Mann, Hugo Castillo

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

With space travel becoming more prominent, research in microgravity conditions has been of increasing interest among many scientists. It is important that as we continue to develop a means of survivability outside of Earth’s atmosphere, we must explore every aspect of physiological health in astronauts. One important factor that is being researched is how microorganisms, such as bacteria, can influence an astronaut's immune system under microgravity conditions. Studies have shown that when astronauts travel to space, their gut microbiota changes drastically than when they are on Earth. This difference in response may be due to a specific bacteria having experienced …

A New Biological Inspired Resource Allocation Algorithm For Distributed Multi Agent Systems With Limited Knowledge, Julia Gorthey

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Resource allocation in scenarios involving uncertainty, limited information, and potential threats can pose significant challenges and difficulties. Swarm intelligence, characterized by the cooperative dynamics of individuals, could enhance community resilience. This is particularly true for scenarios that involve the allocation of finite resources. This study examines a new biologically inspired distributed resource allocation algorithm, drawing inspiration from snapping shrimp colonies. Operating within environments with uncertainty and resource limitations, snapping shrimp colonies exhibit distributed resource allocation when they allocate a limited number of defenders to protect the nest. The hypothesis of the paper is if inspiration is drawn from the snapping …

Chronic Stress-Induced Neuroinflammation: Relevance Of Rodent Models To Human Disease., Abigail G White, Elias Elias, Andrea Orozco, Shivon A Robinson, Melissa T Manners

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The brain is the central organ of adaptation to stress because it perceives and determines threats that induce behavioral, physiological, and molecular responses. In humans, chronic stress manifests as an enduring consistent feeling of pressure and being overwhelmed for an extended duration. This can result in a persistent proinflammatory response in the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), resulting in cellular, physiological, and behavioral effects. Compounding stressors may increase the risk of chronic-stress-induced inflammation, which can yield serious health consequences, including mental health disorders. This review summarizes the current knowledge surrounding the neuroinflammatory response in rodent models of chronic stress-a …

Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo May 2024

Optical Tweezers Explorations: Dna-Mitoxantrone Interactions At 20pn, Heléna Kathryn Beeloo

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Mitoxantrone is a chemotherapy drug that treats a variety of cancers by inhibiting cancer cell replication through intercalation with DNA. Intercalation is the process by which certain small molecules slide flat planar regions in their structure between the base pairs of DNA. This increases the stacking force in the DNA double helix, preventing DNA replication by increasing the force required to separate the two strands that compose the helix. In this study, dual-beam optical tweezers were used to determine the binding kinetics and dissociation constant of Mitoxantrone to single molecules of DNA at 20 pN of force. This study utilized …

Then And Now: Comparing The Representations Of Gender, Race, And Class In Rom-Coms From The 1990s To Today, Madeline Goldberg

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The formula of the romantic comedy is relatively consistent. The couple meets, they get closer, there are trials and tribulations in their relationship which lead to a confession of love, and they live happily ever after from that point on. Popularized by films such as When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You’ve Got Mail (1998), the rom-com genre had a modern resurgence in the 1990s led by the films of Meg Ryan, and has continued to have many moments of relevance in the decades since. Romance can be a divisive genre. People who enjoy it do …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often diagnosed at a late stage and frequently recurs despite curative intervention, leading to poor survival outcomes. Frontline systemic therapies include combination immunotherapy regimens and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. We report a case of a 38-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis B and C coinfection-associated non-cirrhotic HCC, which recurred in the peritoneum after initial resection of her primary tumor. Disease progression occurred on both atezolizumab/bevacizumab and lenvatinib, and she was subsequently treated with gemcitabine and oxaliplatin (GEMOX) chemotherapy and exhibited a profound clinical response on imaging with normalization of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) after several months. Following extensive multidisciplinary …

The Relationship Between Ultrarunning Status, Subjective Well-Being, And Life Satisfaction, Raquel Ramirez Hernandez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a rise in mental health challenges across the United States. Consequently, two important well-being measures for Healthy People 2030—subjective well-being and life satisfaction—were negatively impacted. A plethora of evidence exists about the benefits of running for physical and mental health. Yet, there is no available evidence that shows the benefits of ultrarunning, subjective well-being, and life satisfaction. This quantitative cross-sectional study examined the relationship between ultrarunning status, subjective well-being, and life satisfaction among adult runners in the United States. The advanced triangle of epidemiology served as the conceptual framework. A convenience sample included 369 adult …

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie May 2024

Neurobiological Underpinnings Of Autistic Traits, Sensory Processing, And Mental Health In Young Adult Males And Females, Miranda Jane Mcquarrie

Theses and Dissertations

Females may present with autism more frequently than is diagnosed, due, in part, to autistic trait and sensory processing differences. Unfortunately, recruiting enough autistic female participants is difficult, because of such underdiagnoses. By approaching autism as a continuous variable, neurotypical (NT) individuals can be studied to better understand autistic individuals. Thus, to examine potential neurobiological underpinnings of sex-based behavioral profiles, we recruited 52 NT individuals (22 male; 30 female). Participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how functional network connectivity (via group independent components analysis) underpinned overall male/female differences in previously measured behavioral autistic trait and sensory …

[Re]Mapping Resilience: Reimagining Urban Waterfronts In The Face Of Climate Change, Brandon Bernard May 2024

[Re]Mapping Resilience: Reimagining Urban Waterfronts In The Face Of Climate Change, Brandon Bernard

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

By the year 2100, southern-Florida is projected to experience a 1-2 meter rise in sea level, resulting in the lower portion of the state becoming almost completely submerged under a new watertable.[14] During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city of Miami developed rapidly and the community and economy inevitably became intertwined with the water and its ecology. Due to the growing population and economy, urban developments soared and led to low-lying areas being filled in, open space along waterways were claimed for commercial and residential buildings, and man-made islands such as the venetian islands were constructed. As a result, …

Faculty Research 2024

Multiple myeloma is a largely incurable and life-threatening malignancy of antibody-secreting plasma cells. An effective and widely available animal model that recapitulates human myeloma and related plasma cell disorders is lacking. We show that busulfan-conditioned human IL-6-transgenic (hIL-6-transgenic) NSG (NSG+hIL6) mice reliably support the engraftment of malignant and premalignant human plasma cells, including from patients diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, pre- and postrelapse myeloma, plasma cell leukemia, and amyloid light chain amyloidosis. Consistent with human disease, NSG+hIL6 mice engrafted with patient-derived myeloma cells developed serum M spikes, and a majority developed anemia, hypercalcemia, and/or bone lesions. Single-cell RNA …

The Effects Of Gamma Glutamyl Cysteinyl Ethyl Ester On Oxidative Stress Biomarkers In Traumatically Injured Rats, Jenna Shoemaker

Honors Theses

Primary injury is the original point where the impact force affects axonal tissue. Secondary injury is often the main complication in patients suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Consequences of secondary injuries include oxidative stress, DNA damage, and protein oxidation, which can impact overall brain function (Moppett). Gamma-glutamyl cysteinyl ethyl ester (GCEE), a glutathione mimetic, has been used as an antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress. This study aims to determine if GCEE is neuroprotective against moderate TBI at extended time points. Results from this work will provide insight for determining the best extended time point to administer treatment. This study …
