Feature Integration And Spatial Localization For Attention Across The Visual Hierarchy, Joyce Tam, Chloe Callahan-Flintoft, Brad Wyble May 2024

Feature Integration And Spatial Localization For Attention Across The Visual Hierarchy, Joyce Tam, Chloe Callahan-Flintoft, Brad Wyble

MODVIS Workshop

The featural and spatial specificity of visual representations broadly decrease along the ventral visual stream. The selection of behaviorally relevant information, or attention, must therefore establish spatial correspondence across the visual hierarchy while maintaining behavioral guidance to relevant visual features. Moreover, selection is often accompanied by an inhibitory surround as well as selective inhibition of distractor items. Considering these key functions, we describe a biologically realistic computational theory of visual selection and inhibition through feedforward and feedback signals along the ventral visual stream, complemented by feature-agnostic spatial competition in the pulvinar nuclei. Our model simulates signature visual search behaviors and …

Death To The Museum (As We Know It): A California Art And History Museum Designs A Different Cultural Exhibit, Caitlin Pambid May 2024

Death To The Museum (As We Know It): A California Art And History Museum Designs A Different Cultural Exhibit, Caitlin Pambid

csuglobaljournal

Museums have stuck to traditional rules of focusing interpretation only on the object, having a single exceptional curator, and top-down dissemination of information. One California museum has created a different cultural exhibit that rejects all of these pillars to create an active museum. New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU Los Gatos) recently held an exhibition titled: Reclamation: Resilience of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. Collaborating with the Muwekma Ohlone, aboriginal to the San Francisco Bay Region, this exhibit spotlights and provides a platform for the Muwekma to the surrounding Los Gatos community who may not be aware of the local indigenous …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Aquifer Characterization Techniques to Evaluate Coal Combustion Residuals Sources Authors Mr. Vincent Buening - United States - TRC Mr. Wenbo Xie - United States - TRC Abstract Many of the constituents monitored in groundwater for CCR Rule compliance occur naturally in the environment. Sorting through natural and anthropogenic sources often requires additional in-depth analysis beyond the routine groundwater monitoring program. TRC’s practical application of several aquifer characterization tools and strategies can be used to evaluate potential sources of CCR constituents in groundwater. These strategies include the use of stable isotopes such as boron (δ11B), lithium (δ7Li), and strontium (δ87Sr); age …

Beneficially Using Bottom Ash As Landfill Protective Cover, Ryan Doyle

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

The Overall Process of Beneficially Using Bottom Ash as Landfill Protective Cover, an Engineer’s Perspective Authors Mr. Ryan Doyle - United States - AECOM Abstract Using bottom ash as protective cover along the base of a landfill is one way to beneficially use coal combustion residuals (CCR). The bottom ash serves as a filter to prevent finer particles (e.g. fly ash) from clogging the geocomposite liner which transports leachate to the sump of the landfill cell. Understanding the gradation of the bottom ash and the material properties of the geocomposite are imperative to finding the right combination for an effective …

Tricky Constituents- Issues With Leachate And Groundwater Constituents Of Concern, William Kennedy May 2024

Tricky Constituents- Issues With Leachate And Groundwater Constituents Of Concern, William Kennedy

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Tricky Constituents – Issues with Leachate and Groundwater Constituents of Concern Authors Mr. William Kennedy - United States - Stantec Abstract Certain parameters in wastewater are more problematic to treat than others. Some constituents of concern such as arsenic and mercury are amenable to chemical precipitation, given the correct conditions. Others such as lithium, boron, and molybdenum are much more problematic – both in terms of cost and complexity. For waters from pump and treat systems that produce discharges to surface waters, it is important to correctly identify the appropriate discharge concentrations. Certain groundwater or leachate constituents of concern do …

Heavy On The Solidarity, Light On The Adultism: Adult Supports For Youth Activism, Stephanie C. Serriere, Tennisha Riley

Democracy & Education

This data-based theoretical paper explores the contrasting tensions of adults being in “solidarity” with youths while not reproducing systems of oppression through adultism. Written by adults who have been engaged side-by-side with youth activism, the purpose of this article is to better understand what adult solidarity and support look like according to youth activists themselves as we grapple with the unintentional mechanisms of reinforcing oppressive power dynamics between young people and adults in activist communities. Extending on the Gaztambide-Fernández’s (2012) notion of relational solidarity, the findings offer four types of actions (modeling, connecting, supporting, and protecting) adults can do …

Background: Pediatric high-grade gliomas (pHGGs) are aggressive brain tumors responsible for significant childhood mortality. These tumors often carry mutations in the H3F3A gene, which encodes histone H3.3 proteins. However, current treatment options are limited, underscoring the need for innovative approaches. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapy, which was successful in treating certain childhood cancers, holds promise for pHGGs with H3G34R/V mutations. This study aims to assess the potential of anti-B7-H3 CAR T cell therapy in treating the challenging pHGG tumors.

Method and Results: Here, we examined the expression of B7-H3 in various pHGG cell lines, encompassing those with H3G34V/R and H3K27M …

Laboratory treatability studies can be used to evaluate and optimize groundwater treatment options for contaminants of concern (COCs) found at coal combustion residual (CCR) sites. An important consideration in groundwater treatment selection is the suitability of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as a treatment component or as a stand-alone passive treatment. This presentation will focus on the use of treatability testing to evaluate natural and enhanced attenuation treatment options for redox sensitive metals in CCR-impacted groundwater. In one demonstration, a comprehensive laboratory program was performed based upon the USEPA’s tiered approach to identify the natural attenuation processes, rates, attenuation capacities, and …

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

An Innovative and Economical Approach To Ash Dewatering Authors Mr. Morgan French - United States - UCC Environmental Abstract This paper presents an innovative and cost-effective approach for fly ash dewatering that is specifically designed to address a major challenge in coal ash pond closure projects. Fly ash dewatering is particularly difficult because of its fine particle size, typically less than 40 microns, and its hydrophilic nature, which makes it difficult to separate from water. The new technique employs a combination of chemical treatment and mechanical dewatering to achieve a significant reduction of fly ash moisture content. The chemical treatment …

Random Drug Testing Of Physicians: A Question Of Safety, Jeffrey Julian, Eli Y. Adashi, I. Glenn Cohen

DePaul Journal of Health Care Law

The prospect of mandatory random drug testing of physicians in the U.S. has been the subject of active discussion for well over three decades.1 To this day, however, such programs remain the exception rather than the rule.2 In this paper, we examine the state of mandatory random drug testing of physicians in the U.S. and explore the future prospects thereof. It was a 1986 Executive Order (Drug-Free Federal Workplace) of President Reagan that saw to it that physicians in the employ of the federal government were to be subjected to mandatory random drug testing.3 This development was attributable to the …

Assessment Of Gait, Balance, And Falls In Individuals With Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lauren Tueth

WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs

Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders that impact the brain and lead to neuronal degeneration. This degeneration causes many different symptoms, which are often grouped into motor, cognitive, and psychiatric domains. Individuals with these disorders can experience symptoms from multiple domains at the same time, but little is known about how these distinct symptoms may impact each other.

In Chapter 2, we explored the intersection of balance and cognitive impairment in individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is traditionally discussed in the context of the dementia symptoms, but people with AD also experience motor deficits. Falls are a huge …
