Consciousness And Physicalism, Brian Mcgowan Jun 2024

Consciousness And Physicalism, Brian Mcgowan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Physicalism is a philosophy of mind which attempts to explain consciousness as resulting from physical causes. The lack of a complete and consistent mathematical theory to explain physical causation has led other philosophers of mind to propose that consciousness is a nonphysical essence, property, or substance. However, the idea that physics can be defined atomically and/or deterministically leads to explanatory problems for consciousness, as well as for the dualisms which explain consciousness under these assumptions. This thesis advances a position called “continuous physicalism” which takes all material to result from deformations in the physical medium of space, and any changes …

Toward Otherworlding The Teaching-Learning Of Psychology With Community College Students, Francisco Medina Jun 2024

Toward Otherworlding The Teaching-Learning Of Psychology With Community College Students, Francisco Medina

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation reimagines a different relationality to teaching-learning psychology in the community college classroom through a series of three separate articles. Each article draws on quasi-ethnographic, autoethnographic, and group discussions elements to wonder about the types of theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical dimensions that might make psychology courses more attuned and accountable to younger generations and the end of the world as we know it. The first article explores the metaphysical inseparability, interdependence, and co-constitution of teaching-learning, theory-making, and collective world-making in the psychology community college classroom as an invitation to the end of psychology as we know it. I argue …

Language Play And Racial Dysphemism In The Marrakchi Language Space, Spencer Fausel Jun 2024

Language Play And Racial Dysphemism In The Marrakchi Language Space, Spencer Fausel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study seeks to divulge the meaning and popular usage of two phonetically similar yet reportedly distinct dysphemisms spoken and understood in the Marrakchi dialect of Moroccan Arabic (Darija). Darija speakers across the North African lingua-space use the term "qlawi" to denote testicles. In Morocco, speakers utter "qlawi" to express negation or pejorative notions of being, the term commonly wielded to disparage or vituperate a frustrating person or object—drawing connections to the subaltern, the lowly, the destitute, the stupid, the possessionless, and potentially to the racialized (non)object. The word itself can stand as a syntactic substitute for “nothing” in certain …

Heteronormativity And Fair Housing: Comparing Housing Opportunities Among Cisgender And Transgender Women, Joseph E. Lara Jun 2024

Heteronormativity And Fair Housing: Comparing Housing Opportunities Among Cisgender And Transgender Women, Joseph E. Lara

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the American housing market, gender norms regulate access to safe and stable dwellings. When looking for a home, transgender communities, plagued by multiple vulnerabilities and politicized by conservative politicians, endure vastly different experiences than their cisgender counterparts. Despite an ongoing housing crisis, civil rights laws have widened homeownership opportunities for cisgender women, but transgender women face multiple obstacles to owning a home. How have gender norms influenced the housing market, and how have socially embedded heterosexism and cisgenderism benefited cisgender women over transgender women? This manuscript explores the cultural norms regulating the creation and access to housing, the history …

Legislating The Taboo: Taboo Subcultures, Political Communication, And Public Policy, Rebecca S. Krisel Jun 2024

Legislating The Taboo: Taboo Subcultures, Political Communication, And Public Policy, Rebecca S. Krisel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation, titled "Legislating the Taboo: From Subculture to Public Policy," comprises three articles that collectively delve into the intersection of taboo subcultures, political communication, and public policy. While the fields of sociology and anthropology more thoroughly explore the concepts of "taboo" and "subcultures," political science has not given them due attention. This research seeks to bridge this gap by examining how taboo subcultures evolve into political constituencies with policy demands and how these demands are communicated through various mediums, including mainstream and social media.

The first article, "Virtual Dance Communities and The Right to the Internet," investigates how the …

Using Gaussian Processes To Measure M-Dwarf Rotation Periods From Ground-Based Light Curves, Ryan J. Lebron Jun 2024

Using Gaussian Processes To Measure M-Dwarf Rotation Periods From Ground-Based Light Curves, Ryan J. Lebron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Stellar rotation is a readily observable characteristic that plays a crucial role in the generation and activity of magnetic fields through a process known as a magnetic dynamo. For low mass main sequence stars, they exhibit fully convective interiors, giving rise to a distinct dynamo mechanism compared to solar-type stars. Examining the rotational speeds of these stars can offer valuable insights into the workings of these mechanisms. To measure these rotation periods, we developed a pipeline to analyze 192 archival light curves of low mass stars observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) by utilizing a combination of Lomb-Scargle and …

Unveiling Iolanta: Blindness In Nineteenth-Century Opera, Nafset Chenib Jun 2024

Unveiling Iolanta: Blindness In Nineteenth-Century Opera, Nafset Chenib

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the main tropes of representing and narrating blindness in nineteenth-century opera and fictional literature with a particular emphasis on Tchaikovsky’s 1892 one-act opera Iolanta, with its blind protagonist. Examination of the production history of Iolanta reveals that misrepresentations and misconceptions ingrained within Tchaikovsky's libretto and music have governed directorial choices, consequently giving rise to a homogeneous, predominantly unfavorable portrayal of blindness on the stage. I suggest an approach to the opera that is more consonant with the lived experience of blindness.

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Nimotuzumab has been used for treating squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Its efficacy is attributed to its mechanism of action, which involves the binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor. Ensuring the quality of nimotuzumab is crucial for its safety and efficacy. Utilizing a binding assay to measure its efficacy is a valid approach since it directly correlates with its potency. Here, we developed and validated the cell-based binding assay to determine the potency of nimotuzumab. A-431 cells and fluorescein isothiocyanate mouse anti-human immunoglobulin G antibody were used and the fluorescent intensity was measured to evaluate the …

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Protease-activated receptor 4 (PAR4) mediates thrombin signaling on platelets and other cells. Our recent structural studies demonstrated that a single nucleotide polymorphism in extracellular loop 3 and PAR4-P310L (rs2227376) leads to a hyporeactive receptor. Objectives: The goal of this study was to determine how the hyporeactive PAR4 variant in extracellular loop 3 impacts platelet function in vivo using a novel knock-in mouse model (PAR4-322L). Methods: A point mutation was introduced into the PAR4 gene F2rl3 via CRISPR/Cas9 to create PAR4-P322L, the mouse homolog to human PAR4-P310L. Platelet response to PAR4 activation peptide (AYPGKF), thrombin, ADP, and convulxin was monitored …

Neutrosophic Ranked Set Sampling Scheme For Estimating Population Mean: An Application To Demographic Data, Rajesh Singh, Anamika Kumari Jun 2024

Neutrosophic Ranked Set Sampling Scheme For Estimating Population Mean: An Application To Demographic Data, Rajesh Singh, Anamika Kumari

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The primary goal of this study is to address the limitations of classical statistics in handling am biguous or indeterminate data. The best alternative to classical and fuzzy statistics for handling such data uncertainty is neutrosophic statistics, which is a generalization of both. A generalization of classical statistics, neutrosophic statistics addresses hazy, ambiguous, and unclear information. To achieve this, this manuscript recommends the neutrosophic ranked set sampling approach. We have introduced neutrosophic estimators for estimating the mean of the finite population using auxiliary information under neutrosophic ranked set sampling to address the challenges of estimation of the population mean of …

(R2074) A Comparative Study Of Two Novel Analytical Methods For Solving Time-Fractional Coupled Boussinesq-Burger Equation, Jyoti U. Yadav, Twinkle R. Singh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a comparative study between two different methods for solving nonlinear timefractional coupled Boussinesq-Burger equation is conducted. The techniques are denoted as the Natural Transform Decomposition Method (NTDM) and the Variational Iteration Transform Method (VITM). To showcase the efficacy and precision of the proposed approaches, a pair of different numerical examples are presented. The outcomes garnered indicate that both methods exhibit robustness and efficiency, yielding approximations of heightened accuracy and the solutions in a closed form. Nevertheless, the VITM boasts a distinct advantage over the NTDM by addressing nonlinear predicaments without recourse to the application of Adomian polynomials. …

Application Of Intravenous Laser Irradiation Of Blood (Ilib) In Physical Medicine: A Narrative Review, Ya-Chi Chuang, Yuan-Yang Cheng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Intravenous laser irradiation of blood (ILIB) involves a type of intravascular treatment which applies a helium-neon laser possessing a wavelength of 632.8nm. Since its first use in 1981 by Russian scientists, it is now widely applied in the treatment of various diseases, including chronic musculoskeletal pain, wound healing, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis and acute kidney injury. The underlying mechanism for ILIB may be associated with its anti-oxidative (through regulating the reactive oxygen species systems) and anti-inflammatory effects (by reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines). Moreover, positive effects on …

Repeated Stimulation Of Feeding Mechanoafferents In Aplysia Generates Responses Consistent With The Release Of Food, Hillel J. Chiel Jun 2024

Repeated Stimulation Of Feeding Mechanoafferents In Aplysia Generates Responses Consistent With The Release Of Food, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

How does repeated stimulation of mechanoafferents affect feeding motor neurons? Monosynaptic connections from a mechanoafferent population in the Aplysia buccal ganglia to five motor followers with different functions were examined during repeated stimulus trains. The mechanoafferents produced both fast and slow synaptic outputs, which could be excitatory or inhibitory. In contrast, other Aplysia mechanoafferents produce only fast excitation on their followers. In addition, patterns of synaptic connections were different to the different motor followers. Some followers received both fast excitation and fast inhibition, whereas others received exclusively fast excitation. All followers showed strong decreases in fast postsynaptic potential (PSP) amplitude …

From Pre-Clinical To Translational Brain Metastasis Research: Current Challenges And Emerging Opportunities, Emilija Aleksandrovic, Siyuan Zhang, Dihua Yu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Brain metastasis, characterized by poor clinical outcomes, is a devastating disease. Despite significant mechanistic and therapeutic advances in recent years, pivotal improvements in clinical interventions have remained elusive. The heterogeneous nature of the primary tumor of origin, complications in drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier, and the distinct microenvironment collectively pose formidable clinical challenges in developing new treatments for patients with brain metastasis. Although current preclinical models have deepened our basic understanding of the disease, much of the existing research on brain metastasis has employed a reductionist approach. This approach, which often relies on either in vitro systems or in …

The outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria is a barrier to chemical and physical stress. Phospholipid transport between the inner and outer membranes has been an area of intense investigation and, in E. coli K-12, it has recently been shown to be mediated by YhdP, TamB, and YdbH, which are suggested to provide hydrophobic channels for phospholipid diffusion, with YhdP and TamB playing the major roles. However, YhdP and TamB have different phenotypes suggesting distinct functions. It remains unclear whether these functions are related to phospholipid metabolism. We investigated a synthetic cold sensitivity caused by deletion of fadR, a transcriptional regulator …

Aromatic-carbonyl (Ar···C═O) interactions, attractive interactions between the arene plane and the carbon atom of carbonyl, are in the infancy as one type of new supramolecular bonding forces. Here the study and functionalization of aromatic-carbonyl interactions in solution is reported. A combination of aromatic-carbonyl interactions and dynamic covalent chemistry provided a versatile avenue. The stabilizing role and mechanism of arene-aldehyde/imine interactions are elucidated through crystal structures, NMR studies, and computational evidence. The movement of imine exchange equilibria further allowed the quantification of the interplay between arene-aldehyde/imine interactions and dynamic imine chemistry, with solvent effects offering another handle and matching the electrostatic …

BACKGROUND: The complex relationship between measured leukocyte telomere length (LTL), genetically predicted LTL (gTL), and carcinogenesis is exemplified by lung cancer. We previously reported associations between longer pre-diagnostic LTL, gTL, and increased lung cancer risk among European and East Asian populations. However, we had limited statistical power to examine the associations among never smokers by gender and histology.

METHODS: To investigate further, we conducted nested case-control analyses on an expanded sample of never smokers from the prospective Shanghai Women's Health Studies (798 cases and 792 controls) and Shanghai Men's Health Studies (161 cases and 162 controls). We broke the case-control …

Advances In The Integration Of Microalgal Communities For Biomonitoring Of Metal Pollution In Aquatic Ecosystems Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Mary Mulenga, Concillia Monde, Todd Johnson, Kennedy O Ouma, Stephen Syampungani

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This review elucidated the recent advances in integrating microalgal communities in monitoring metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also highlighted the potential of incorporating microalgae as bioindicators in emerging technologies, identified research gaps, and suggested directions for further research in biomonitoring of metal pollution. Reputable online scholarly databases were used to identify research articles published between January 2000 and June 2023 for synthesis. Results indicated that microalgae were integrated either individually or combined with other bioindicators, mainly macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and fish, alongside physicochemical monitoring. There was a significantly low level of integration (< 1%) of microalgae for biomonitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA compared to other geographical regions. Microalgal communities were employed to assess compliance (76%), in diagnosis (38%), and as early-warning systems (38%) of aquatic ecological health status. About 14% of biomonitoring studies integrated microalgal eDNA, while other technologies, such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and biosensors, are yet to be significantly incorporated. Nevertheless, there is potential for the aforementioned emerging technologies for monitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA. Future monitoring in the region should also consider the standardisation and synchronisation of integrative biomonitoring and embrace the "Citizen Science" concept at national and regional scales.

Epigenetic regulation established during development to maintain patterns of transcriptional expression and silencing for metabolism and other fundamental cell processes can be reprogrammed in cancer, providing a molecular mechanism for persistent alterations in phenotype. Metabolic deregulation and reprogramming are thus an emerging hallmark of cancer with opportunities for molecular classification as a critical preliminary step for precision therapeutic intervention. Yet, acquisition of therapy resistance against most conventional treatment regimens coupled with tumor relapse, continue to pose unsolved problems for precision healthcare, as exemplified in breast cancer where existing data informs both cancer genotype and phenotype. Furthermore, epigenetic reprograming of the …

Environmental exposures such as cigarette smoking influence health outcomes through intermediate molecular phenotypes, such as the methylome, transcriptome, and metabolome. Mediation analysis is a useful tool for investigating the role of potentially high-dimensional intermediate phenotypes in the relationship between environmental exposures and health outcomes. However, little work has been done on mediation analysis when the mediators are high-dimensional and the outcome is a survival endpoint, and none of it has provided a robust measure of total mediation effect. To this end, we propose an estimation procedure for Mediation Analysis of Survival outcome and High-dimensional omics mediators (MASH) based on sure …

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a complex degradation process with a dual role in cell death that is influenced by the cell types that are involved and the stressors they are exposed to. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent oxidative form of cell death characterized by unrestricted lipid peroxidation in the context of heterogeneous and plastic mechanisms. Recent studies have shed light on the involvement of specific types of autophagy (e.g. ferritinophagy, lipophagy, and clockophagy) in initiating or executing ferroptotic cell death through the selective degradation of anti-injury proteins or organelles. Conversely, other forms of selective autophagy (e.g. reticulophagy and lysophagy) enhance the cellular defense …

Tumor mutational burden (TMB) and T-cell receptor (TCR) might predict the response to immunotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the predictive value of the combination of TMB and TCR was not clear. Targeted DNA and TCR sequencing were performed on tumor biopsy specimens. We combined TMB and TCR diversity into a TMB-and-TCR (TMR) score using logistic regression. In total, 38 patients with advanced NSCLC were divided into a discovery set (
