Understanding the ecological dynamics of forest ecosystems, particularly the influence of forest age structure on soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content, is crucial for effective forest management and conservation. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient storage and ecological stoichiometry across different-aged stands of Chinese fir forests. Soil samples were collected from various depths (0–15 cm, 15–30 cm, and 30–45 cm) across four age groups of Chinese fir forests (8-year-old, 12-year-old, 20-year-old, and 25-year-old) in the Forest Farm, Pingjiang County, China. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were measured, and their stoichiometries …

As climate change progresses, wildfires will become more common, increasing their impact on soil microbial ecosystems. This research examines how increased fire frequency affects soil microbial communities and whether effects differ for communities associated with different tree species. Soil samples were collected from under five individuals of four tree species within each of four 1-ha plots that had experienced fire from 24 to 111 years ago. Samples were analyzed for microbial DNA using next generation sequencing techniques in order to explore the influence of fire return interval and tree species on microbial diversity and community structure. Correlations were also examined …

Data acquisitions in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are inherently slow due to sequential acquisition protocol. Image reconstruction from under-sampled data is posed as an inverse problem in traditional model-based learning paradigms. Recent data-centric learning frameworks such as deep learning (DL) frameworks are data hungry, and demand a large, labeled training data sets. To address the lack of large training datasets, in MRI reconstructions, researchers approach the problem in two ways: (1) unsupervised method where the model is trained without the presence of fully sampled data. (2) using a method that efficiently use the limited dataset for training purpose. In this …

National Parks Field Journal, Isadora Davis
Art and Design Student Scholarship and Projects
A handwritten, richly illustrated field journal by Binghamton University art major Isadora Davis, recording a trip through national parks in the American West via SUNY Broome's BIO 217: Ecology of National Parks. Davis uses colored pencil drawings and pressed botanical specimens to record landscapes, birds, mammals, and plant life in Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Wind Cave, and Badlands National Parks, as well as Custer State Park. Davis's sketches and diagrams visually explore how to decode past landscapes from current formations, while her written entries explain species diversity, animal behavior, and the mechanisms causing geological formations and geothermal events. Part memoir of …

Valuing Trans Lives After Suicide: Rituals Of Commemoration In Digital Social Media Culture, Joe Edward Hatfield
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 2014, a trans teenager named Leelah Alcorn posted a suicide letter to her public Tumblr account. Almost a decade later, in 2023, Eden Knight, another young trans woman, posted a suicide letter to her public Twitter account. Both suicide letters went viral and inspired memorial hashtags on the platforms where they initially circulated. In this article, I identify similarities between the cases, conceptualizing both as rituals of commemoration aimed toward restoring value to trans lives lost too soon. My analysis shows how ordinary users leverage the connective affordances embedded within popular social media platforms to sustain structured, value-laden acts …

Wildlife Conservation: The Importance Of Individual Personality Traits And Sentience, Karen A. Owens, Gosia Bryja, Marc Bekoff
Animal Sentience
Individual differences in personality types within the same species have been studied much less than differences between species and populations. Personality differences are related to risk-taking and exploration, which in turn correlate with individuals' daily responses, decisions, and fitness. Bold and shy personality types can have different advantages and disadvantages under different social or environmental pressures. Analyzing personality differences has helped clarify how elk habituate to a well-populated area and how management strategies can be adapted to them. For wolves newly repatriated to Colorado, individual personality factors are likely to prove important for adapting to their new homes as well …
Thermal Sensitivity Of Metabolic Rates Across Ontogeny In A Widespread Lizard Species, Benjamin D. Haussmann
Thermal Sensitivity Of Metabolic Rates Across Ontogeny In A Widespread Lizard Species, Benjamin D. Haussmann
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The environment to which an organism is exposed plays a crucial role in all ontogenetic stages of their life history. Specifically, as ectotherms do not produce their own body heat, thermal environments determine many phenotypes and physiological rates. Additionally, because thermal environments can vary depending on latitude and altitude, it is possible for ectotherm populations to compensate to local thermal environments. One such physiological rate of importance is metabolic rate. Metabolism underlies all processes of an organism that require energy, making metabolic rate a great general measure of organismal performance. Through these chapters, metabolic rates are measured in three life …

Prevalence estimates of sibling bullying indicate it occurs more frequently and with more negative consequences than peer bullying, yet many countries do not track or investigate the phenomenon. University students from Argentina, Estonia, and the United States were surveyed to investigate their retrospective experiences involving sibling bullying, how often it occurred, the roles held, and the forms communicated. In the aggregated data, roughly 50 % of the sampled emerging adults (N = 3477) reported experience with sibling bullying, with the dual role of bully-victim being the most frequently reported role held by males and females, with the second role being …

Improving Transitions In Care Through Early Discharge Planning: A Quality Improvement Initiative., Sarah Markgraf
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: A substantial body of evidence has shown transitions in care are one of the weakest links in healthcare networks, especially for older adults with complex comorbidities. Residents receiving short-term rehabilitation (i.e., rehab) transitioning to home from a skilled nursing facility (SNF) are the most vulnerable in the first 30 days post-discharge for adverse resident events, including avoidable rehospitalization. Avoidable rehospitalizations cost Medicare billions of dollars annually and lead to poor resident outcomes. Early discharge planning in SNFs for short-term stay rehabilitation has decreased rates of avoidable rehospitalizations, improved quality of life in geriatric residents, and improved care partners' perceived …

Effects Of Fire On Ecosystem Carbon In The Upper Midwest And Northeast United States : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler
Michigan Tech Publications
Prior to European settlement, fire was a common disturbance across most of the Midwest and Eastern United States. Today, prescribed fire is used as a management tool to promote native, fire-tolerant species and reduce vulnerability to high-intensity, unplanned fires. This primer discusses how prescribed fire affects ecosystem structure and function, with a primary focus on ecosystem carbon storage and sequestration. Management considerations related to the effects of prescribed fire on ecosystem carbon and greenhouse gas mitigation goals are discussed.

A Government Branch Of Its Own: Reining In The Power Of The Regents Of The University Of California, Veronica Gray
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The University of California system is the crown jewel of American public universities. However, Californians have virtually no say over University of California policies. At the University of California’s inception, the drafters of the 1879 California Constitution envisioned a school system controlled by a Board of Regents who are largely insulated from politics. The autonomy from elected officials and the public allows the Regents to have nearly full control over a public good. The Regents’ autonomy and control over the University of California system has led to conflict between the Regents, the public, and state legislators regarding land use, labor, …

Background. Machine learning (ML) has developed classifiers differentiating patient groups despite concerns regarding diagnostic reliability. An alternative strategy, used here, is to develop a functional classifier (hyperplane) (e.g. distinguishing the neural responses to received reward v. received punishment in typically developing (TD) adolescents) and then determine the functional integrity of the response (reward response distance from the hyperplane) in adolescents with externalizing and internalizing conditions and its associations with symptom clusters.
Methods. Two hundred and ninety nine adolescents (mean age = 15.07 ± 2.30 years, 117 females) were divided into three groups: a training sample of TD adolescents …

Introduction: Numerous studies have highlighted cognitive benefits in lifelong bilinguals during aging, manifesting as superior performance on cognitive tasks compared to monolingual counterparts. Yet, the cognitive impacts of acquiring a new language in older adulthood remain unexplored. In this study, we assessed both behavioral and fMRI responses during a Stroop task in older adults, pre- and post language-learning intervention.
Methods: A group of 41 participants (age: 60–80) from a predominantly monolingual environment underwent a four-month online language course, selecting a new language of their preference. This intervention mandated engagement for 90 minutes a day, five days a week. …

Our understanding of human brain function can be greatly aided by studying analogous brain structures in other organisms. One brain structure with neurochemical and anatomical homology throughout vertebrate species is the locus coeruleus (LC), a small collection of norepinephrine (NE)-containing neurons in the brainstem that project throughout the central nervous system. The LC is involved in nearly every aspect of brain function, including arousal and learning, which has been extensively examined in rats and nonhuman primates using single-unit recordings. Recent work has expanded into putative LC single-unit electrophysiological recordings in a nonmodel species, the zebra finch. Given the importance of …

Automated Concrete Bridge Deck Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Systems Collected Data: A Machine Learning Approach, Rojal Pokhrel
Master's Theses
Many national infrastructures, particularly bridges, are becoming older and older day by day. Their safe operation and maintenance require routine monitoring and inspection. There are lots of bridge inspection specifications and manuals to guide inspectors to give the proper recommendations about the bridge structure and safety. These manuals and specifications require bridge inspectors to manually inspect the bridge and recommend maintenance and repair tasks referring to the specific criteria available in the manuals. In time, the application of technology makes many Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) advancements during the phase of data collection. For the image processing and analysis of collected …

Camera traps are a powerful, practical, and non-invasive method used widely to monitor animal communities and evaluate management actions. However, camera trap arrays can generate thousands to millions of images that require significant time and effort to review. Computer vision has emerged as a tool to accelerate this image review process. We propose a multi-step, semi-automated workflow which takes advantage of site-specific and generalizable models to improve detections and consists of (1) automatically identifying and removing low-quality images in parallel with classification into animals, humans, vehicles, and empty, (2) automatically cropping objects from images and classifying them (rock, bait, empty, …

Variation among resource patches can structure spatial patterns of social behavior. Individual preferences and requirements for heterogeneous resources can lead to differences in where behaviors take place and which kinds of individuals interact. In this study we examined whether properties of habitat patches predict presence of and interactions among wild forked fungus beetles (Bolitotherus cornutus). B. cornutus use shelf-like fruiting bodies of wood decaying fungi (brackets) as social arenas, courtship and mating sites, oviposition locations, and food sources. Brackets on a single log vary in size and condition and represent a dynamic resource as individual brackets decay over …

Fasthpocr: Pragmatic, Fast, And Accurate Concept Recognition Using The Human Phenotype Ontology., Tudor Groza, Dylan Gration, Gareth Baynam, Peter N Robinson
Faculty Research 2024
MOTIVATION: Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO)-based phenotype concept recognition (CR) underpins a faster and more effective mechanism to create patient phenotype profiles or to document novel phenotype-centred knowledge statements. While the increasing adoption of large language models (LLMs) for natural language understanding has led to several LLM-based solutions, we argue that their intrinsic resource-intensive nature is not suitable for realistic management of the phenotype CR lifecycle. Consequently, we propose to go back to the basics and adopt a dictionary-based approach that enables both an immediate refresh of the ontological concepts as well as efficient re-analysis of past data.
RESULTS: We developed …
