The Mediterranean Region registers an increasing prevalence of obesity. The region lacks a diet screener to assess obesogenic nutrients. This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility and validity of the Modified Mediterranean Prime Screen (MMPS) in estimating obesogenic nutrients' intake among women of reproductive age, as compared with a culturally validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), in Lebanon. We developed the MMPS consisting of thirty-two food/beverage items specific to the Lebanese Mediterranean culture. The MMPS and FFQ were administered in two visits (2 weeks-6 months apart), face to face and via telephone during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The reproducibility and …
Improving Biomimetic Passive Dynamics Of A Quadruped Robot Hind Leg Hip Joint With A 3d Printed Torsion Spring, Haonan Zheng
Improving Biomimetic Passive Dynamics Of A Quadruped Robot Hind Leg Hip Joint With A 3d Printed Torsion Spring, Haonan Zheng
Dissertations and Theses
The Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab is interested in researching the neuromuscular control network of legged animal locomotion. To validate the lab's understanding of biological neural control, synthetic neural networks are developed and applied to biologically inspired legged robots. For a synthetic neural network to operate in the same manner as a biological neural network and produce the same locomotor behavior, the robot that the synthetic neural network is controlling must also mimic its biological counterpart. Previous research produced a quadruped robot hind leg designed with biomimetic passive dynamics by installing spring and damper pairs at each joint, however, an …

The Effect Of Tio2 On The Electrochemical Performance Of Sb2o3 Anodes For Li-Ion Batteries, Kithzia Gomez, Elizabeth M. Fletes, Jason Parsons, Mataz Alcoutlabi
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Antimony (Sb) and its composites have been recognized as potentially good anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their relatively high theoretical capacity of 660 mAh g−1 and to their low cost. However, Sb-based anodes suffer from a high-volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process that results in capacity fading and anode degradation after prolonged charge/discharge cycles. To address this issue, Sb2O3/TiO2 nanocomposite electrodes can be synthesized and used as anodes for LIBs with high capacity and good electrochemical stability. In the present work, TiO2@Sb2O3 composites with different (TiO2:Sb2O3) ratios of 0:1, 1:1, 1:4 and 3:1 were synthesized and directly …

Spatial Analysis Of The Soil Salinity In Ashiqah In The City Of Buraidah Using Spectral Indicators During The Rainy And Dry Seasons, Wedad Hammdan Al-Ruqi Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This study analyzed soil salinity and its spatial distribution in Ashiqah through what is provided by remote sensing techniques represented by spectral indices and compare them with field measurements. This study relied on three spectral indices, Salinity Index (2.4) and Normalized Difference Salinity Index (NDSI) during the rainy and dry seasons, to extract salinity in the AShiqah Lowland. The results indicated a variation in the values of the indices associated with the soil moisture during the dry and rainy seasons. Also, there were high levels of salinity in the soil of Ashiqah, and similar values to the results of laboratory …

Curatele is a legal determination applied to individuals unable to manage their own needs and interests, designates them as legally incompetent. Despite its intent, the curatele system faces challenges due to misuse, resulting in violations of the rights of those placed under curatele. Governed by Article 433 of the Civil Code, curatele underwent significant changes following Constitutional Court Decision No. 93/PUU-XX/2022. This decision rendered curatele is now no longer a necessity, but rather can be, for individuals with conditions such as dungu, sakit otak, and mata gelap, provided these conditions aren't interpreted as indicative of mental or …
The Logical Reasoning Dilemma Of Llms: A Mapping Deficit In Representation Acquisition, Yiling Wu
The Logical Reasoning Dilemma Of Llms: A Mapping Deficit In Representation Acquisition, Yiling Wu
Theses
Currently, Large Language Models (LLMs) based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer architecture have made breakthroughs in multilingual language processing tasks and performed similar language processing capabilities to humans. However, their performance in dealing with tasks involving reasoning, especially logical reasoning, show significant shortcomings. In this paper, we argue that logical reasoning competence requires a certain type of representation acquisition capability. Based on this, in order to assess whether LLMs have the potential to overcome the shortcomings of their logical reasoning competence in their subsequent development, this work compares the representation acquisition processes of humans and LLMs. This comparison reveals that …

Preoperative risk biomarkers for delirium may aid in identifying high-risk patients and developing intervention therapies, which would minimize the health and economic burden of postoperative delirium. Previous studies have typically used single omics approaches to identify such biomarkers. Preoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the Healthier Postoperative Recovery study of adults ≥ 63 years old undergoing elective major orthopedic surgery was used in a matched pair delirium case–no delirium control design. We performed metabolomics and lipidomics, which were combined with our previously reported proteomics results on the same samples. Differential expression, clustering, classification, and systems biology analyses were applied to individual …
Resisting Exploitation: A Study Of Karen Joyce Warren’S Ecofeminist Ethic In The Selected Indian Movies, Kogila S
Theses and Dissertations
According to Warren, “The exploitation of nature and animals is justified by feminising them; the exploitation of women is justified by naturalising them” (EPWP 27). Women and nature have the same right to live independently. They are not meant for exploitation. However, patriarchy has long exploited them.
The changes are happening only in the ratio, not in the act of controlling. This research aims to study the undervalued state of women and others in nature concerning Warren's eight features of ecofeminist ethic in Indian movies, namely Harish Ram L's Thumbaa (2019), Amit Masurkar’s Sherni (2021), and Rathindran Prasad R’s Boomika …

Eroding Permafrost Coastlines Release Biodegradable Dissolved Organic Carbon To The Arctic Ocean, Emily M. Bristol, Megan Behnke, Robert G. Spencer, Amy Mckenna, Benjamin M. Jones, Diana L. Bull, James W. Mcclelland
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Coastal erosion mobilizes large quantities of organic matter (OM) to the Arctic Ocean where it may fuel greenhouse gas emissions and marine production. While the biodegradability of permafrost‐derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has been extensively studied in inland soils and freshwaters, few studies have examined dissolved OM (DOM) leached from eroding coastal permafrost in seawater. To address this knowledge gap, we sampled three horizons from bluff exposures near Drew Point, Alaska: seasonally thawed active layer soils, permafrost containing Holocene terrestrial and/or lacustrine OM, and permafrost containing late‐Pleistocene marine‐derived OM. Samples were leached in seawater to compare DOC yields, DOM composition …

Methadone maintenance treatment for opioid dependent mothers is standard of care. Infants of methadone maintained opioid dependent (MMOD) mothers have better outcomes compared to infants of opioid dependent mothers without treatment. However, when compared to non-exposed infants, infants of MMOD mothers are associated with worse outcomes. We conducted a pilot study to examine genome wide differential DNA methylation using cord blood samples from sixteen term and near-term infants of MMOD and opioid naïve mothers, excluding Infants with chorioamnionitis. A total of 152 differentially methylated loci were identified at a difference > + 2, < - 2 and p-value < 0.05. There were 90 hypermethylated loci (59 annotated genes) and 62 hypomethylated loci (38 annotated genes) observed. The hypermethylated and hypomethylated DNA changes involved multiple genes, pathways and networks that may explain some of the changes seen in infants of MMOD mothers. Top hypermethylated and hypomethylated genes involved areas of cell growth, neurodevelopment, vision and xenobiotic metabolism functions. Our data may explain the role of key pathways and genes relevant to neonatal outcomes seen from methadone exposure in pregnancy. Functional studies on the identified pathways and genes could lead to improved understanding of the mechanisms and identify areas for intervention.
Freedom As The Physical Notion. Mechanics Of A Material Point, Michael Vigdorowitsch
Freedom As The Physical Notion. Mechanics Of A Material Point, Michael Vigdorowitsch
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This is a novel conceptual attempt to introduce freedom as a consistent physical notion. The present consideration is limited to mechanics of a material point. Adapted to physical representation, freedom is tested throughout the paper to conform to its general perception. It is first tried on such physical notions (but not restricted to) as potency of a set, Lagrangian, action, degrees of freedom. Defined as angular and essentially nonlinear variable, it appears to be dual as that the domain affords and that the material point possesses within the domain, not necessarily equal to one another. Freedom has to degrade if …

“Ain’T Nuthin Wrong With Being A Trojan Man”: Discourse On Safe-Sex In Rap Music, 1985-1995, Christopher D. Rounds, Kareem R. Muhammad
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
This essay methodically tracks references to safe-sex in rap music and analyzes their implications. Reviewing over 3,000 songs from 1985 to 1995, the authors found that the tone and messages of these references differed substantially. While many artists celebrated risky and indiscriminate sexual behavior– their work marred by a misogny and homophobia that often stigmatized persons living with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)– many other artists portrayed safe-sex in a positive light, either as a responsible approach to sexual behavior, or as a pragmatic tool of urban survival. These songs normalized the use of condoms, and educated listeners by raising awareness …

Effects Of Seed Mix Design And Planting Time On Mid-Summer Floral Resources In Crp Plantings, Rachel G. Lursen, Madison Carleton, Laura Jackson
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
In Iowa, over 99% of tallgrass prairie has been converted to agricultural land. Intensive farming practices have been linked to habitat decline and reduced ecosystem services, which have severely impacted pollinator populations. The USDA Farm Services Agency established the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to provide incentives for landowners who enroll farmland to be restored to prairie. This study examined the effectiveness of CRP initiatives concerning the availability of floral resources throughout the season. We specifically wanted to know the effect of seed mix and planting time on the quantity and richness of floral resources, interactions between treatments, and the contributions …

Intermittent Fasting As An Adjuvant To Standard Drug Therapy For Drug Resistant Epilepsy, Jake Smiech
Intermittent Fasting As An Adjuvant To Standard Drug Therapy For Drug Resistant Epilepsy, Jake Smiech
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Epilepsy affects about 70 million people worldwide, making it the world’s second most common neurological disease. The first line treatment for epilepsy are anti-seizure medications, but only two-thirds of patients respond to the first two medications given. We propose a randomized controlled study utilizing intermittent fasting as a therapeutic lifestyle modification as an adjuvant to standard drug therapy for those that experience drug-resistant epilepsy. We will assess the efficacy and safety of intermittent fasting for a period of six months, and statistically determine if there is a significant reduction in the mean frequency of seizures participants experience compared to a …

Tuning Pid Controller For Quadrotor Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Eric X. Rodriguez, Qi Lu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Energy expenditure for quadrotor control has a likelihood of being costly given parameter-dependent controllers that are less than optimal. The cost can grow proportionally when applied to multiple quadrotors for tracking and collaborative navigation tasks. This research aims to establish a basic approach to tuning PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) parameters for a simulated quadrotor drone. A PID controller for autonomy provides a straightforward method for correcting robotic movement based on its current state. However, applying a PID system to a flight controller poses challenges with an inherently under-actuated system, which includes the likelihood of large overshoots and lengthy adjustment times. To address …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The analysis of heart sound signals constitutes a pivotal domain in healthcare, with the prediction of imbalanced heart sounds offering critical diagnostic insights. However, the inherent diversity in cardiac sound patterns presents a substantial challenge in predicting imbalanced signals. Many scientific disciplines have focused a great deal of emphasis on the problem of class inequality. We introduce an ensemble learning approach employing a convolutional neural network model-based deep learning algorithm to effectively tackle the challenges associated with predicting imbalanced heart sound signals. We use a Gammatone filter bank to extract relevant features from the heard sound signal. Our approach leverages …

Automated voice disorder systems that distinguish pathological voices from healthy ones have been developed with the aid of machine learning methods. Both clinicians and patients can benefit from these systems as they provide many advantages, compared to the invasive techniques. These systems can produce binary (healthy/pathological) or multi-class (healthy/selected pathologies) decisions. However, multiple disorders might exist in an individual’s voice. Multi-label classification should be considered in such cases. By this time, only a single report is available on this topic, where hand-crafted features were used, and a data augmentation technique was utilized to overcome class imbalances. In this study, a …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gamma proteobacterium that is autochthonous to coastal waters and is responsible for 50% of seafood-related deaths in the United States. This study presents a series of nowcasting and forecasting models for predicting vibrio vulnificus abundance in oysters by identifying the long-range dependence of vibrio vulnificus abundance on antecedent environmental conditions and detecting the environmental conditions using satellite remote sensing technology. It was discovered that vibrio vulnificus abundance exhibits a long-range dependence on antecedent environmental conditions which can be characterized by seven independent environmental predictors (stressors) including sea surface temperature (SST), water level (WL), sea surface …

Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug with notable side effects including ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Macrophages, the major resident immune cells in the cochlea and kidney, are important drivers of both inflammatory and tissue repair responses. To investigate the roles of macrophages in cisplatin-induced toxicities, we used PLX3397, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor, to eliminate tissue-resident macrophages. Mice treated with cisplatin alone had considerable hearing loss (ototoxicity) and kidney injury (nephrotoxicity). Macrophage ablation resulted in significantly reduced hearing loss and had greater outer hair cell survival. Macrophage ablation also protected against cisplatin-induced …
