The Impact Of Teaching Residency Programs On Burnout In Urban Schools, Jessica Ghazi
The Impact Of Teaching Residency Programs On Burnout In Urban Schools, Jessica Ghazi
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This doctoral research investigates burnout of urban educators in a large southeastern district for a mixed methods study. Research questions one and two investigate demographic and organizational variables to determine if they are predictors of burnout or any of the three subcomponents, respectively. In research question three, teaching residencies were explored to determine if they provide appropriate preparation for teaching in urban schools which can limit burnout of educators. Variable data was collected through surveys and analyzed quantitatively of a sample of 69 urban teachers across 12 schools. For research question four, a subsample of teachers participated in focus groups …
Analyzing Anuran Diversity In Urban And Rural Wetlands Using Frog Call Citizen Science Data, Jeremiah Rhodes
Analyzing Anuran Diversity In Urban And Rural Wetlands Using Frog Call Citizen Science Data, Jeremiah Rhodes
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Amphibians are currently experiencing a crisis of high extinction rates because of habitat destruction, and climate change. Citizen science, the incorporation of citizens in data collection or management of scientific research, has become necessary to monitor populations widely. The Tennessee Amphibian Monitoring Program is a citizen science program, at the state-level that conducts manual calling surveys in Tennessee. The TAMP dataset was analyzed to see if there was a difference in diversity and abundance of anurans in urban wetlands compared to rural wetlands in the Ridge and Valley ecoregion. A Hutchenson’s t-test and a Mann-Whitney U test found that the …

Japan’S “Big Lie": The Negation Of Oral Testimony Of Sexual Violence, Robert O'Mochain, Yuki Ueno
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
In recent years, powerful actors in Japan’s political elite have consistently denied the oral testimony of so-called “comfort women.” The denial of this and related historical crimes is made in the service of a claim we denote here as the “big lie.” This is the erroneous assertion that the Asia-Pacific War was a straightforward war of liberation by the Japanese Imperial Army, inspired by a blameless Emperor and carried out by morally exemplary military forces. This denial of historical realities, especially those related to “comfort women,” has constituted a contributory factor for a pattern of denial regarding all historical crimes. …

Establishment Of A Novel Prairie Vole (Microtus Ochrogaster) Sars-Cov-2 Infection And Transmission Model, Stephanie Rebecca Kehl
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Considering that the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases and deaths continues to increase three years after the onset of the pandemic, the need for animal models to study disease pathology and test antiviral effectiveness remains paramount. Prairie voles offer unique advantages as an infection model, such as mirroring human social behavior, including pair bonding and biparental offspring rearing, having inducible estrus and ovulation cycles, and not being overly domesticated. Based on the sequence homology of the vole ACE2 receptor to that of other species that are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, such as the ferret and hamster, we hypothesized that the vole ACE2 …

UNLABELLED: High-dose intravenous vitamin C (HDIVC) administered to produce pharmacologic concentrations shows promise in preclinical models and small clinical trials, but larger prospective randomized trials are lacking. We evaluated the clinical benefit of combining HDIVC with docetaxel in patients with progressive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). In this double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II trial, 47 patients were randomized 2:1 to receive docetaxel (75 mg/m2 i.v.) with either HDIVC (1 g/kg) or placebo. Coprimary endpoints were PSA50 response and adverse event rates. Secondary endpoints included overall survival, radiographic progression-free survival, and quality of life measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate …
Evaluating The Cost Of Gain And Financial Returns Of Cattle Fed Hydroponically Produced Barley Fodder, Lex Peterson
Evaluating The Cost Of Gain And Financial Returns Of Cattle Fed Hydroponically Produced Barley Fodder, Lex Peterson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Hydroponically produced fodder continues to garner attention as a feed source within livestock production. This attention in part is due to a belief that hydroponically produced fodder is more efficient in its use of inputs such as water when compared to conventional feeds. Water efficiency is especially appealing in areas like the Intermountain West region of the U.S where water availability is often constrained. This analysis looks to understand how using hydroponically produced barley fodder to finish steers compares economically to finishing steers on a nutritionally equivalent conventional finishing ration. To do so, a stochastic simulation model is constructed to …
Is The Lightbulb Still-Still On?: Social Representations Among Undergraduates, A Replication And Extension, Nahdira Rollins
Is The Lightbulb Still-Still On?: Social Representations Among Undergraduates, A Replication And Extension, Nahdira Rollins
Creative Studies Graduate Student Master's Theses
Research has illuminated the differences between implicit and explicit theories of creativity—though scientific theories have been tested and can be theoretically sound, implicit beliefs among the general population can run contrary to academic theory. As important as it is for researchers to know and understand creativity from an empirically founded perspective, it is equally as important for them to understand creativity theories that come from the general understanding and perspectives of those who aren’t associated with academic research. By replicating Glăveanu’s 2011 study Is the lightbulb still on?: Social Representations of creativity in a western context, the current study examines …

The threat of monopoly power looms large today. Although not the telecommunications and tobacco monopolies of old, the Goliaths of Big Tech have become today’s target for potential antitrust violations. It is not only their control over the social media infrastructure and digital advertising technologies that gives people pause, but their monopolistic collection, use, and sale of customer data. But large technology companies are not the only private companies that have exclusive access to your data; that can crowd out competitors; and that can hold, use, or sell your data with little to no regulation. These other private companies are …

Assessing The Invasive Clinging Jellyfish: Where Are All The Polyps?, Angela Chemidlin
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Researching invasive species is vital to the health of ecosystems. Any invasion can place an ecosystem at risk of deterioration through increased competition with native species, food web changes, and community dynamic alterations. Clinging jellyfish (Gonionemus vertens) have recently emerged as a nuisance invader in New Jersey. They pose an additional threat to humans because they possess both paralysis venoms, which cause muscle seizures and intense pain, and neurotoxins that can cause neuropsychiatric symptoms. Jellyfish possess a complex life history involving sexually reproducing medusae and a cryptic asexual polyp stage. Medusae blooms occur during May and June, but locating their …

Assessment Of Predation By Common Spider Crab Libinia Emarginata On An Intermittent Food Resource Mytilus Edulis, Noah T. S. Macchirole
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Libinia emarginata, commonly known as the portly or common spider crab, is predominantly herbivorous and native to the east coast of the United States. In Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, L. emarginata is a prominent member in eelgrass communities, but is widespread among numerous benthic habitats. Eelgrass beds in Barnegat Bay are also used as settlement sites for blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), which show episodic recruitment events in the spring. These events are ephemeral and variable in timing, location, and quantity. Unlike more extensively studied crabs, such as Callinectes sapidus and Carcinus maenas, there is limited research on the interactions that …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Experiences with gender microaggressions have been shown to negatively impact mental health and self-esteem in women. Cisgender women are faced with pervasive gender microaggressions throughout life, including within their homes and families. This study sought to explore cisgender women’s experiences with gender microaggressions within two critical family systems, the family of origin and intimate adult relationships. Utilizing Postmodern Feminist Theory and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, three overarching themes were identified related to how cisgender women experience and make meaning of gender microaggressions: 1) Rigid Roles and Expectations for Women; 2) Impact of Power Dynamics; and 3) Identifying Pathways to Lasting Change. …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Freshwater Wetlands With A Focus On Ecosystem Functions And Services, Michael Viteritto
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth, though they only occupy a very small portion of the planet’s surface. They are highly sensitive ecosystems that have been undergoing an extended period of loss because of anthropogenic stress. Freshwater wetlands number among the most numerous on the planet, and in the United States they make up the overwhelming majority of wetland area. Geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs) are not directly connected to other surface water in a watershed. Freshwater wetlands provide a number of beneficial ecosystem services including climate control, erosion protection, nutrient removal and storage, flood control, food …

The Effects Of The Living Compass Group On Lpc Associates' Wellness And Self-Care, Jennifer Yarbrough
Dissertations
Counselors can only be effective if they engage in a healthy level of self-care. Counselors recognize the importance of self-care, but they often ignore the early warning signs when it is lacking (e.g., emotional shifts, changes in well-being, or altered behaviors). Self-care has been studied for many years and is emphasized in the ACA Code of Ethics 2014. However, counselors still need to work on establishing a self-care practice, especially considering that 50% of licensed professional counselor associates (LPC associates) do not make it through the licensure process. Researchers found that novice counselors experience a higher level of burnout. In …

Black Women’S Instagram Usage And Body Dissatisfaction, Shirlee Buchanan Moore Jr.
Black Women’S Instagram Usage And Body Dissatisfaction, Shirlee Buchanan Moore Jr.
Dissertations
Within U.S. culture, girls and women of all ages are subject to experiencing body dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction often results from direct comparison of one’s body to others, often via media depictions. Viewing these images prompts women of all cultures to engage in social comparison and learn to view themselves through an observer’s perspective. The advent of contemporary social media has increased the accessibility of images of others and, subsequently, social comparison of one’s body to others. Research has noted that women of all racial backgrounds utilize social media and experience varying degrees of satisfaction and dissatisfaction with their bodies. Despite …

PURPOSE: Multiple myeloma (MM) affects over 35,000 patients each year in the US. There remains a need for versatile Positron Emission Tomography (PET) tracers for the detection, accurate staging, and monitoring of treatment response of MM that have optimal specificity and translational attributes. CD38 is uniformly overexpressed in MM and thus represents an ideal target to develop CD38-targeted small molecule PET radiopharmaceuticals to address these challenges.
PROCEDURES: Using phage display peptide libraries and pioneering algorithms, we identified novel CD38 specific peptides. Imaging bioconjugates were synthesized using solid phase peptide chemistry, and systematically analyzed in vitro and in vivo in relevant …
High-Dimensional Single-Cell Analysis Of Human Natural Killer Cell Heterogeneity, Lucas Rebuffet, Marco Colonna, Et Al.
High-Dimensional Single-Cell Analysis Of Human Natural Killer Cell Heterogeneity, Lucas Rebuffet, Marco Colonna, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) contributing to immune responses to microbes and tumors. Historically, their classification hinged on a limited array of surface protein markers. Here, we used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and cellular indexing of transcriptomes and epitopes by sequencing (CITE-seq) to dissect the heterogeneity of NK cells. We identified three prominent NK cell subsets in healthy human blood: NK1, NK2 and NK3, further differentiated into six distinct subgroups. Our findings delineate the molecular characteristics, key transcription factors, biological functions, metabolic traits and cytokine responses of each subgroup. These data also suggest two separate ontogenetic …

Traumatic, life-threatening events are experienced commonly among the general U.S. population, yet Black individuals in the United States (i.e., Black Americans) exhibit higher prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more severe symptoms than other populations. Although empirical research has noted a range of symptom patterns that follow traumatic injury, minimal work has examined the role of racial discrimination in relation to PTSD symptom trajectories. The current study assessed racial discrimination and PTSD symptom trajectories at 6 months postinjury across two separate samples of traumatically injured Black Americans (i.e. emergency department (ED)–discharged and hospitalized). Identified PTSD symptom trajectories largely …

Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are important in enhancing concept learning and student engagement for educational purposes. Despite the multimodal nature of educational content, current methods focus mainly on text-based inputs and often neglect the integration of visual information. In this work, we study the problem of multimodal educational question generation, which aims at generating subject-specific educational questions with plausible yet incorrect distractors based on multimodal educational content. To tackle this problem, we introduce a novel framework, named Chain-of-Exemplar (CoE), which utilizes multimodal large language models (MLLMs) with Chain-of-Thought reasoning to improve the generation of challenging distractors. Furthermore, CoE leverages three-stage contextualized …

Conventional machine learning methods are predominantly designed to predict outcomes based on a single data type. However, practical applications may encompass data of diverse types, such as text, images, and audio. We introduce interpretable tensor fusion (InTense), a multimodal learning method training a neural network to simultaneously learn multiple data representations and their interpretable fusion. InTense can separately capture both linear combinations and multiplicative interactions of the data types, thereby disentangling higher-order interactions from the individual effects of each modality. InTense provides interpretability out of the box by assigning relevance scores to modalities and their associations, respectively. The approach is …

There is a growing number of studies investigating discriminatory fear conditioning and conditioned inhibition of fear to assess safety learning, in addition to extinction of cued fear. Despite all of these paradigms resulting in a reduction in fear expression, there are nuanced differences among them, which could be mediated through distinct behavioral and neural mechanisms. These differences could impact how we approach potential treatment options in clinical disorders with dysregulated fear responses. The objective of this review is to give an overview of the conditional discrimination and inhibition findings reported in both animal models and human neuropsychiatric disorders. Both behavioral …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are common viruses that are present in the general population. However, it is uncommon for both viruses to coincide at the same time and location. These viruses infect the nervous system to establish latency and have been associated with neurological disorders. We discuss a case of co-occurring VZV reactivation and recurrent HSV infection with subsequent VZV encephalitis following an insult to the neurologic system.
