Daca’S Stratified Tracks For Economic Mobility And Lessons For Addressing Immigrants’ Long-Term Inequality, Els De Graauw, Shannon Gleeson Aug 2024

Daca’S Stratified Tracks For Economic Mobility And Lessons For Addressing Immigrants’ Long-Term Inequality, Els De Graauw, Shannon Gleeson

UC Law Journal

Since 2012, the politically tenuous Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has provided temporary deportation relief and work authorization to over eight hundred thirty-five thousand undocumented young people who fit certain criteria. This Essay draws on one hundred fifteen interviews with DACA applicants in California, New York, and Texas during the heyday of the program to better understand its impacts on recipients’ school and work experiences. We confirm many of the key benefits DACA status has provided to recipients, notably opening doors for them educationally and professionally.

However, our research also confirms DACA’s uneven impacts. Those without four-year college …

Privacy Mismanagement: Privacy Harms, Digital Market Monopolies, And Antitrust Law, Kristie Lam Aug 2024

Privacy Mismanagement: Privacy Harms, Digital Market Monopolies, And Antitrust Law, Kristie Lam

UC Law Journal

Privacy self-management fails to protect consumer privacy. In the advent of the Internet, individuals had the option to tailor how their personal data was used throughout digital markets. However, since the digital markets are dominated by a few large conglomerates, namely Meta and Google, consumers have little choice to determine how they will use the internet in the face of the blatantly decreasing quality of privacy protection. The lack of adequate privacy protections in the digital markets harms consumers and erodes democratic institutions. Given the societal ramifications of consolidated digital markets on consumers, antitrust laws are the appropriate mechanism to …

Caught On Camera: Evaluating Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa) Cavity Occurrence And Trapping Efficiency, Cindy L. Von Haugg Aug 2024

Caught On Camera: Evaluating Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa) Cavity Occurrence And Trapping Efficiency, Cindy L. Von Haugg

All Theses

Wood ducks (Aix sponsa) garner significant ecologic and economic importance as the second most harvested waterfowl species in two of the four migratory flyways in North America, but the accuracy of population monitoring, relative to other duck species, is stifled by the wood duck’s secretive nature and nesting habitat. As an alternate, population models would improve current assessments, but more data on the demographic vital rates of cavity-nesting wood ducks is needed. I aimed to help bridge this knowledge gap by developing a method to increase data collection efficiency, and with it, accomplish two objectives: 1) Calculate the relative abundance …

Brd4 Mediates Tgf-Beta-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Differentiation, Sana Petkar Aug 2024

Brd4 Mediates Tgf-Beta-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Differentiation, Sana Petkar

Biotechnology Theses

Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) differentiation is an essential component of vascular development. Vascular smooth muscle cells do not terminally differentiate, the regulatory factors modulate their phenotype between proliferative and differentiated states, which is a major factor contributing to vascular diseases like atherosclerosis, aneurysms, hypertension, etc. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) family is highly conserved in mammals and plays an essential role in VSMC differentiation. The canonical TGF-β pathway is propagated by phosphorylation of receptor-associated Smad proteins (R-Smads) following TGF-β stimulation.Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) is a protein encoded by the BRD4 gene in humans. BRD4 is novel epigenetic modulator that …

Essays On Aging, Health, And Labor Market, Lanjie Wang Aug 2024

Essays On Aging, Health, And Labor Market, Lanjie Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of four chapters on aging, health, and labor economics.

In the first chapter, we investigate the short-term impacts of unemployment on older workers in Singapore, a setting without public unemployment insurance. Using monthly panel data, we analyze dynamic impacts on income, spending, health, and subjective well-being over two years post-unemployment. We find substantial initial earnings losses with incomplete recovery, with income remaining 46.5% below pre-unemployment levels after 24 months. Despite this persistent income gap, consumption responses are modest and comparable to countries with strong social safety nets, suggesting robust self-insurance mechanisms. We observe increased retirement among married …

Small In Number, Large In Impact: The Recruitment And Retention Of Middle School African American Male Stem Teachers, Cris L. Garner Ii Aug 2024

Small In Number, Large In Impact: The Recruitment And Retention Of Middle School African American Male Stem Teachers, Cris L. Garner Ii

All Dissertations

Watson and Smitherman (1996) emphasized the important role African American male teachers can play in schools, particularly in those with African American male students. They argued that these teachers serve as positive role models and provide culturally relevant support. Gay (2020) highlighted that the lack of African American male teachers exacerbates the challenges faced by African American male students. This underrepresentation can lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of engagement. Furthermore, it may contribute to lower academic achievement and fewer opportunities for success among African American male students.

The study sought to determine (1) the perception of the need …

China's Theater-Range, Dual-Capable Delivery Systems: Integrated Deterrence And Risk Reduction Approaches To Counter A Growing Threat, Justin Anderson, Chris Andrews

Research and Case Studies

China has engaged in a dramatic buildup of its nuclear forces over the past decade. While much of the attention on China’s new nuclear arsenal has focused on its development and expansion of its strategic nuclear triad, this growth has also included significant numbers of theater-range, dual-capable delivery systems. These forces are not capable of reaching the U.S. mainland but can range U.S. and allied forces and bases across strategically significant swathes of the Indo-Pacific.

This research project assessed the growing threat to the United States and its Indo-Pacific allies posed by these systems. It then considered ways and means …

Tremblings

Function over form: the benefits of aspen for Greater Sage-grouse

Michel T. Kohl, Associate Professor of Wildlife Management and Wildlife Extension Specialist, University of Georgia

David Dahlgren, Associate Professor and Rangeland Wildlife Extension Specialist, Utah State University

Sage-grouse, and their elaborate springtime breeding displays, are an icon of Western landscapes. Yet, sage-grouse (a sagebrush obligate species) have been facing decades-long declines due to the loss of habitat. Historically, the species ranged across 13 western states and two Canadian provinces. Today, they occur across < 50% of that range, and abundance has declined 80% since 1965 and almost 40% since 2002. Despite this, it was determined in 2015 that the sage-grouse did not warrant Endangered Species protection due to the strength of wide-spread collaborative conservation actions.

Detection Of Cryptosporidium Spp. In Surface Water And Tissues Of Bivalves In Waterways Of Coney Island, New York (Usa), Manasvi Patel

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are major sources of pollutants such as microbial pathogens, total suspended solids (TSS), oxygen depleting substances, toxicants, and nutrients. Untreated wastewater contains parasites like Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Entamoeba which impact human health. Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of diarrheal diseases which spreads through contaminated water supplies. Our research on Coney Island in Brooklyn investigated the amount of Cryptosporidium oocysts found in the water and bivalves/shellfish tissue and to supports a parallel study examining both people's use of waterways around Coney Island (for religious ceremonies, fishing, foraging, swimming, etc.) and their perceptions of how polluted the …

Despite considerable efforts, progress in the implementationof sexuality education (SE) has been uneven. This study identi-fied six “positive-deviant” low- and middle-income countries,i.e., countries that had scaled up, sustained and enhancedtheir SE programs when many others—in similar social, cul-tural and economic circumstances—were not able to do so. Inother words, they were significantly and consistently moresuccessful than the norm. Countries were shortlisted using avalidated framework and were analyzed using three other vali-dated frameworks on political priority setting, scaling up, andstakeholder engagement. The study found that India, Pakistan,Nigeria, Senegal, Mexico, and Uruguay had scaled up (eithernationwide or in some states/provinces), sustained andenhanced their …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Gene Ablation In Preserving Ejection Fraction During Chronic Volume Overload-Induced Heart Failure., Oluwaseun Ebenezer Akinterinwa Aug 2024

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Gene Ablation In Preserving Ejection Fraction During Chronic Volume Overload-Induced Heart Failure., Oluwaseun Ebenezer Akinterinwa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure is a prevalent cause of hospitalization globally, especially among older adults. The ejection fraction is a critical parameter in assessing and managing heart failure patients. As we age, the cardiovascular system undergoes changes that increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. One of the most significant structural features that occur with age is reduced or impaired contractility of the left ventricular wall of the heart. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a crucial role in tissue remodeling, and their latency is linked with nitric oxide (NO). In the context of heart failure and constant stress, tissue remodeling leads to …

Racial Identity & Psychological Distress: The Mediating Role Of Sense Of Community And Spiritual Struggles Among Black Christians., Adebayo Ajibade Aug 2024

Racial Identity & Psychological Distress: The Mediating Role Of Sense Of Community And Spiritual Struggles Among Black Christians., Adebayo Ajibade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religious practice and church membership have historically been protective and critical in Black communities in the United States and across the African diaspora. Demographic studies have shown a consistent decline in religious adherence and practice across racial and ethnic groups in the United States. However, the decline in religious practice and participation in religious communities has been less pronounced among individuals of African descent. Participation in one’s religious community is often a source of positive social engagement and can foster positive intrapersonal outcomes (e.g., wellbeing). However, religious communities and religious practice can also be the source of conflict and emotional …

Unraveling The Complex Dynamics Of Cardiac Fibrosis: Ccn1 As A Novel Regulator Of Scar Collagen Architecture And Structural Integrity In Myocardial Infarction., Annalara Garland Fischer Aug 2024

Unraveling The Complex Dynamics Of Cardiac Fibrosis: Ccn1 As A Novel Regulator Of Scar Collagen Architecture And Structural Integrity In Myocardial Infarction., Annalara Garland Fischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expansion of the extracellular matrix (ECM), known as fibrosis, accompanies nearly all forms of cardiac disease; however, its most significant and complex manifestations arise following a myocardial infarction (MI). This process, principally led by fibroblasts, constitutes a necessary and adaptive response acutely to fill the void from cardiomyocyte necrosis following ischemic injury due to the heart’s lack of regenerative capacity. This acute response never fully resolves and contributes to ongoing collagen accumulation in non-infarcted regions, leading to diminished ventricular compliance, ongoing myocyte loss, and attrition in function—culminating in heart failure. Further, recent research demonstrates that concomitant with progressive increases in …

Exosomal Cannabidiol: A Promising Candidate For Targeted Oral Delivery Against Breast Cancer., Disha Nagesh Moholkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer therapies are limited by lack of specificity, selectivity and numerous adverse effects. Repurposing potential anticancer compounds with appropriate drug carriers can help overcome these drawbacks. In our present study, we address the major obstacle for cannabidiol (CBD): its low oral bioavailability, using exosomes. Exosomes (Exo) are promising non-toxic and biocompatible drug delivery vehicles Our project aims are to address the research gap by formulating exosomal cannabidiol (ExoCBD): a tumor-targeted oral delivery system for the treatment of breast cancer. The targeting approach relies on the overexpression of folate receptors at the tumor site by using folic acid functionalized exosomes (FA-Exo). …

Health Professions Education And Critical Action Engagement: A Mixed Method Analysis., Leonda Richardson Aug 2024

Health Professions Education And Critical Action Engagement: A Mixed Method Analysis., Leonda Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Poorer health outcomes disproportionately impact racial/ethnically minoritized (e.g., Black Indigenous People of Color, or BIPOC) populations in the U.S. One plausible reason for the persistence of poorer health outcomes among this population is the teaching of racialized curricular content within academic health professions programs. This includes the absence of appropriate context through explicit socio-political curricular content (SPC) and critical pedagogy (i.e., social and structural determinants of health, history of racism in health care, social justice concepts; dialogue and reflective writing). Racialized curriculum is thought to initiate and/or exacerbate existing racial biases, cultural incompetence, and perpetuate dominant medical ideologies and myths …

Uncovering The Hidden Diversity Of Antibody Heavy Chains And Their Implications For Autoantibody Mediated Disease., Easton Earl Ford Aug 2024

Uncovering The Hidden Diversity Of Antibody Heavy Chains And Their Implications For Autoantibody Mediated Disease., Easton Earl Ford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the diversity of antibody (IG) molecules at the DNA and RNA level is imperative for understanding immunological processes and disease. Much of the work to uncover IG diversity has been focused on diversity in the variable region of the IG molecule which is crucial for antigen binding. However, the diversity of the constant region responsible for the functions of IG has largely been ignored in the field of immunogenetics. The work presented in this thesis challenges the dogma that the constant region is invariant in terms of genetic diversity. In this thesis we present the development of a long-read …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin Aug 2024

Molecular Mechanisms Of Exercise-Stimulated Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Dietary Dependence., Ernesto H. Pena Calderin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diet-induced obesity and adipose tissue (AT) inflammation that ensues sets the stage for systemic metabolic inflammation, disrupted insulin signaling, and eventual type 2 diabetes (T2D) development. At the center of this pathology lies a disruption in endogenous inflammation resolution pathways characterized by an imbalance in lipid mediator production (greater abundance of pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving lipids). Additionally, obese states are characterized by adrenergic deficiency, especially in response to physical activity. Inflammatory processes have been experimentally mitigated by either the pharmacological inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals (i.e., Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and its receptor BLT1, which establishes a potent chemotactic stimulus …

Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Shifting Bounded Habitat And Allee Effect., Davis Henderson Aug 2024

Effects Of A Protection Zone In A Reaction-Diffusion Model With Shifting Bounded Habitat And Allee Effect., Davis Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We consider a reaction-diffusion equation that models a population in a shifting bounded habitat with a protection zone and the Allee effect. We assume that the population growth function exhibits the strong Allee effect and has a positive integral within the protection zone (indicating population persistence) and a negative integral in the surrounding patches (indicating population decay). We prove that the existence of steady-state solutions to this system depends on the length of the protection zone. It is demonstrated that there exists some value H* such that, for a protection zone of size H*, there exists a solution and, for …

Examining Associations Between Parental Meta-Emotion, Child Adhd Symptoms, And Socioemotional Impairments., Meaghan Flynn Aug 2024

Examining Associations Between Parental Meta-Emotion, Child Adhd Symptoms, And Socioemotional Impairments., Meaghan Flynn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children with elevated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms are at increased risk for social and emotional problems compared to typically developing peers. Emerging research has suggested targeting parental emotion socialization practices to enhance socioemotional development among this population. Interventions have explored how targeting specific emotion socialization behaviors may promote emotional and social functioning for youth with ADHD; however, little research has evaluated how underlying parental attitudes may influence these behaviors and outcomes. Parental meta-emotion philosophy (PMEP) refers to an organized set of thoughts and beliefs on how parents view the purpose of emotions, expression of emotions, and how these beliefs are …

Risk Perception, Diabetes Risk Knowledge, And Fatalism In Adults At Risk For Type 2 Diabetes: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective., Cassandra M. Gonzalez Aug 2024

Risk Perception, Diabetes Risk Knowledge, And Fatalism In Adults At Risk For Type 2 Diabetes: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective., Cassandra M. Gonzalez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Rising rates of diabetes in the U.S. indicate an urgent need to explore and understand factors that elucidate individual diabetes risk. Research of fatalism, the belief that events are predetermined, suggests that fatalistic beliefs influence, shape, and potentially determine health behavior and decision-making. The Theory of Self-Determination posits the importance of motivation and competence in health behavior outcomes. The present study aimed to expand fatalism research by examining associations among fatalism and diabetes-related beliefs and knowledge, including perceived risk and risk knowledge, within the Self-Determination theoretical framework. Methods: Participants were 130 adults aged 26 to 64 without diabetes at …

Exosomes are involved in cell-to-cell communication through the delivery of proteins, nucleic acids, and small …

How Anthropocentrism Shaped Florida, Olivia Benson Aug 2024

How Anthropocentrism Shaped Florida, Olivia Benson

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses

Anthropocentrism, the belief that humankind is central to existence and has priority over all other living beings and systems, is embedded in Western philosophy and motivates environmental degradation. The history of Florida provides some of the most egregious examples, compiled with instances of large-scale transformation and destruction for the sake of tourist, residential, commercial, and industrial developments. Florida’s rapid development and natural resource use in the twentieth century changed its unique landscape by using ruinous methods to reclaim land and synthesize a paradise for humans alone. The loss of over half of the Everglades—the unique wetland system with incredible biodiversity—is …
