Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an evergreen tree species that grows naturally in regions with Mediterranean climates. Its oil and fruits are commercially valuable. Olive oil contains high levels of omega-9 (oleic acid). Because the high percentage of oleic acid makes olive oil deterioration-resistant, the development of olive varieties containing high oleic acid is one of the major goals of olive breeding programs. Therefore, this study aimed to determine quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting fatty acid composition of olive oil. Thus, early selection of olive genotypes with a high oleic acid content can be possible. For the determination of QTLs …

Alternate bearing is a common challenge in horticultural plants, leading to irregular yield in successive years. The potentialrole of phenolic compounds in regulating this phenomenon, however, is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate thepotential role of phenolic compounds in alternate bearing in pistachio trees by analysing samples from different parts of the “Uzun”cultivar over two consecutive years. Seven phenolic compounds (gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, catechin, and quercetin) were analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography at 10-day intervals. Significant variations wereobserved in the levels of certain phenolic compounds between “ON” and “OFF” years, suggesting a …

Biostimulants can find application in sustainable agriculture contexts as they are regarded as inputs with minimal environmental impact. Microbial inoculants, when applied to the root systems of certain plant species, confer physiological and morphological benefits to the entire plant. In the present study, we focused on some morphometric parameters of the root system of two Crithmum maritimum L. spontaneous populations (Mediterranean and Atlantic). We compared the effects of two different (for number of strains) biostimulants on the weight, length, diameter and number of tips on the root system. The experiment was conducted within two types of controlled environments: i) an …

Heavy metal pollution is a major environmental issue that has a negative impact on soil quality and food security. As a result, heavy metal removal or remediation from hazardous sites has become mandatory. Bioremediation based on microorganisms is a promising method to remediate heavy metal-contaminated areas due to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and highly efficient characteristics. This study aimed to isolate, identify and characterize rhizospheric bacteria able to resist, reduce, and detoxify heavy metals (chromium [Cr], nickel [Ni], and aluminum [Al]) from agricultural soil. Two isolates were chosen due to their high level of heavy metal resistance and could serve as …

One of the main drivers of autism spectrum disorder is risk alleles within hundreds of genes, which may interact within shared but unknown protein complexes. Here we develop a scalable genome-editing-mediated approach to target 14 high-confidence autism risk genes within the mouse brain for proximity-based endogenous proteomics, achieving the identification of high-specificity spatial proteomes. The resulting native proximity proteomes are enriched for human genes dysregulated in the brain of autistic individuals, and reveal proximity interactions between proteins from high-confidence risk genes with those of lower-confidence that may provide new avenues to prioritize genetic risk. Importantly, the datasets are enriched for …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) causes epithelial damage followed by subsequent repair. While successful repair restores kidney function, this process is often incomplete and can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a process called failed repair. To better understand the epigenetic reprogramming driving this AKI-to-CKD transition, we generated a single-nucleus multiomic atlas for the full mouse AKI time course, consisting of ~280,000 single-nucleus transcriptomes and epigenomes. We reveal cell-specific dynamic alterations in gene regulatory landscapes reflecting, especially, activation of proinflammatory pathways. We further generated single-nucleus multiomic data from four human AKI samples including validation by genome-wide identification of nuclear factor …

Understanding the biological mechanisms underlying racial differences in diseases is crucial to developing targeted prevention and treatment. There is, however, limited knowledge of the impact of race on lipids. To address this, we performed comprehensive lipidomics analyses to evaluate racial differences in lipid species among 506 non-Hispanic White (NHW) and 163 non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women. Plasma lipidomic profiling quantified 982 lipid species. We used multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for confounders, to identify racial differences in lipid species and corrected for multiple testing using a Bonferroni-adjusted p-value < 10

Accurate attitude determination ensures precise payload sensor alignment and optimal solar panel positioning, enhancing data collection and power efficiency while ensuring stable orbit maintenance. The most accurate method of attitude determination is star tracking. Star trackers collect an image of a star field and utilize a catalog of known star positions to calculate the orientation of the system relative to the stars. The errors present in this method of attitude determination tend to be on the order of ten arcseconds or less. Using traditional collection techniques, attitude estimates can be provided at update rates of 1 to 10 Hz and …

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a safe diagnostic method of high accuracy detection and characterization of various pathological conditions. However, due to the very closed aspect of the apparatus, the high sound amplitude emitted and the need to remain motionless for a significant time, some patients experience discomfort and high levels of anxiety, compromising time and image quality management that can impair the clinical outcome of the patient or even give up the performance of this procedure. Therefore, this study aimed to validate, with patients, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a humanized practice of exposure to magnetic resonance …

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive muscle wasting disorder affecting 1:3500 male births and is associated with myofiber degeneration, regeneration, and inflammation. Glucocorticoid treatments have been the standard of care due to immunomodulatory/immunosuppressive properties but novel genetic approaches, including exon skipping and gene replacement therapy, are currently being developed. The identification of additional biomarkers to assess DMDrelated inflammatory responses and the potential efficacy of these therapeutic approaches are thus of critical importance. The current study uses RNA sequencing of skeletal muscle from two mdx mouse models to identify high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) as a candidate biomarker potentially …

Impact Of Site Rehabilitation On Local Insect And Pollinator Populations: A Case Study Of Newly Restored Mining Lands In Butte, Montana, Nicholas Rasschaert
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Pollinators play a critical role in ecosystem functionality, with 80% of the world's plant species depending on animal-mediated pollination. Given that habitat loss is a primary threat to pollinators and many species are becoming threatened in the US, restoration efforts must focus not only on plant communities but also on their pollinating animal counterparts. Including pollinator-focused strategies in rehabilitation plans is crucial, particularly in areas that have experienced significant environmental degradation, such as post-industrial and mining landscapes. This study assessed insect and plant diversity across eight sites within the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area Superfund site, located in southwestern Montana. The …

Craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) is a rare genetic bone disorder, characterized by progressive thickening of craniofacial bones and flared metaphyses of long bones. Craniofacial hyperostosis leads to the obstruction of neural foramina and neurological symptoms such as facial palsy, blindness, deafness, or severe headache. Mutations in ANKH (mouse ortholog ANK), a transporter of small molecules such as citrate and ATP, are responsible for autosomal dominant CMD. Knock-in (KI) mice carrying an ANKF377del mutation (AnkKI/KI) replicate many features of human CMD. Pyrophosphate (PPi) levels in plasma are significantly reduced in AnkKI/KI mice. PPi is a potent inhibitor of …

Exploring The Role Of Rb1 In Cellular Differentiation Using Patient-Derived Stem Cells, Ambily Vincent
Theses and Dissertations
The Retinoblastoma (RB1) gene, predominantly recognized as a tumour suppressor, plays a crucial role in early growth and development. Mice lacking the retinoblastoma gene do not survive and exhibit defects in the differentiation of various tissues, underscoring its involvement in cellular differentiation. This suggests that the functions of the RB1 gene extend beyond its role as a tumour suppressor, encompassing cell cycle regulation, maintenance of genomic stability, cellular senescence, and cellular differentiation.
While the tumour suppressor function of the RB1 has been extensively studied, its role in cellular differentiation remains incompletely understood. Existing literature, primarily based on animal models, has …

Is There Room In The Classroom For The First Amendment? Defining The Doctrine For Teachers’ Classroom Speech, J.P. Riley
San Diego Law Review
Many public school teachers face a daunting question: What are they allowed to say in the classroom? States are actively passing legislation restricting instruction and discussion regarding Critical Race Theory, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Yet, there is a circuit split in First Amendment jurisprudence regarding the bounds of teachers’ classroom speech. Do these purported curricular restrictions extend to all teachers’ classroom speech? Do these restrictions silence teachers’ lived identities related to race, sexual orientation, and gender identity? The Supreme Court should resolve the circuit split in teachers’ classroom speech analysis to provide teachers the protection to share their lived …
