Youth Dignity Takings: How Book And Trans Bans Take Youth Property And Dignity, Sarah M. Camiscoli, Paige Duggins-Clay, Maryam Salmanova, Ibtihal Chamakh

Loyola Interdisciplinary Journal of Public Interest Law

This article practices Participatory Law Scholarship and Movement Law to engage Marginalized and Mobilized Youth in legal scholarship and to elevate their resistance against book bans and trans bans. Together, we—a legal scholar-practitioner, frontline movement lawyer, Youth community legal worker, and law student-activist—make the positive claim that book bans and trans bans constitute a dignity taking—a state action that takes property from a marginalized group and dehumanizes and infantilizes that group in the process. Further, we make the normative claim that legal advocates committed to repairing the deprivations of these bans and bills must attend to both the material loss …

Amphiphala, A New Genus And Its Three New Species From Eastern North America (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Cochylina), Michael A. Roberts, Michael Sabourin, John W. Brown

Insecta Mundi

Amphiphala Roberts and Sabourin, new genus (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is proposed for three new species: A. liatriana Roberts and Sabourin, new species; A. landryana Brown, new species; and A. carolana Sabourin, new species. The genus is recorded from the eastern part of North America from Ontario, Canada south to South Carolina, and west to Manitoba and Mississippi. Owing to its superficial similarity to the banded sunflower moth, Cochylichroa hospes (Walsingham, 1884), Amphiphala remained hidden in North American Lepidoptera collections. Amphiphala liatriana has been reared from northern blazing star, Liatris scariosa (L.) Willd. (Asteraceae), in Maine.

Diversification And Evolution Of Hawaiian Megalagrion Damselflies (Pinapinao, Odonata: Coenagrionidae), Robert K. Hadfield Aug 2024

Diversification And Evolution Of Hawaiian Megalagrion Damselflies (Pinapinao, Odonata: Coenagrionidae), Robert K. Hadfield

Theses and Dissertations

The Megalagrion damselflies of HawaiÊ»i present a valuable study system for understanding the impacts of geology on evolutionary processes. Despite their significance, our understanding of the temporal, geographic, and phylogenetic origins of these damselflies remains incomplete. Prior phylogenetic studies have proposed adaptive ecological and morphological progressions, but evaluating these hypotheses relies on a sound understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the genus. Previous phylogenetic analyses have produced conflicting topologies. To resolve these uncertainties, we performed phylogenetic analyses including divergence time estimation with 90 nuclear loci (>50 kbp) and 2 mitochondrial loci (>1000 bp), sampling representatives from each genus within …

Multiple Guidance Mechanisms Control Axon Growth To Generate Precise T-Shaped Bifurcation During Dorsal Funiculus Development In The Spinal Cord, Bridget M. Curran, Kelsey R. Nickerson, Andrea R. Yung, Lisa V. Goodrich, Alexander Jaworski, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Le Ma Aug 2024

Multiple Guidance Mechanisms Control Axon Growth To Generate Precise T-Shaped Bifurcation During Dorsal Funiculus Development In The Spinal Cord, Bridget M. Curran, Kelsey R. Nickerson, Andrea R. Yung, Lisa V. Goodrich, Alexander Jaworski, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Le Ma

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

The dorsal funiculus in the spinal cord relays somatosensory information to the brain. It is made of T-shaped bifurcation of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory axons. Our previous study has shown that Slit signaling is required for proper guidance during bifurcation, but loss of Slit does not affect all DRG axons. Here, we examined the role of the extracellular molecule Netrin-1 (Ntn1). Using wholemount staining with tissue clearing, we showed that mice lacking Ntn1 had axons escaping from the dorsal funiculus at the time of bifurcation. Genetic labeling confirmed that these misprojecting axons come from DRG neurons. Single axon analysis …

Forest Defoliation By And Invasive Outbreak Insect: Catastrophic Consequences For A Charismatic Mega Moth, Richard L. Lindroth, Mark R. Zierden, Clay J. Morrow, Patricia C. Fernandez Aug 2024

Forest Defoliation By And Invasive Outbreak Insect: Catastrophic Consequences For A Charismatic Mega Moth, Richard L. Lindroth, Mark R. Zierden, Clay J. Morrow, Patricia C. Fernandez

Aspen Bibliography

Earth is now experiencing declines in insect abundance and diversity unparalleled in human history. The drivers underlying those declines are many, complex, and incompletely known. Here, using a natural experiment, we report the first test of the hypothesis that forest defoliation by an invasive outbreak insect compromises the fitness of a native insect via damage-induced increases in toxicity of the forest canopy. We demonstrate that defoliation by the invasive spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) elicits an average 8.4-fold increase in foliar defense expression among aspen (Populus tremuloides) genotypes. In turn, elevated defense dramatically reduces survivorship, feeding, and …

Living Collections: Biodiversity Cultivated At Public Gardens Has The Power To Connect Ecological Questions And Evolutionary Context, Jean H. Burns, Katharine L. Stuble, Juliana S. Medeiros

Faculty Scholarship

Combining ecological questions with evolutionary context generates novel insight into both ecology and evolution. However, our ability to draw broad inferences can be limited by the taxonomic diversity present within and across species at a site. Public gardens (including botanical gardens and arboreta) may focus solely on aesthetics in developing their gardens, but some public gardens include scientific inquiry and conservation at the core of their missions (Hohn, 2022). These scientifically oriented public gardens follow community standards of excellence (Hohn, 2022) to provide unique access to curated plant collections specifically designed to gather high levels of biodiversity, both among and …

Role Of Vegfa In Intervertebral Disc Pathoanatomy And Low Back Pain, Ryan Potter

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Chronic low back pain (LBP) affects more than 80% of Americans and causes significant disability and staggering public health costs. Despite this astonishing prevalence, there are currently no disease modifying therapies. Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration accounts for a considerable proportion of LBP, but the precise mechanisms driving the painful pathoanatomy are not understood. The degenerating IVD exhibits a complex array of inflammatory and physiologic changes, and many are associated with the presentation of LBP. For example, the presence of nerves and blood vessels in degenerate IVDs have been identified in patients and animals presenting with LBP symptoms. However, no studies …

Bridging The Global Divide In Ai Regulation: A Proposal For A Contextual, Coherent, And Commensurable Framework, Sangchul Park Aug 2024

Bridging The Global Divide In Ai Regulation: A Proposal For A Contextual, Coherent, And Commensurable Framework, Sangchul Park

Washington International Law Journal

As debates on potential societal harm from artificial intelligence (AI) culminate in legislation and international norms, a global divide is emerging in both AI regulatory frameworks and international governance structures. In terms of local regulatory frameworks, the European Union (E.U.), Canada, and Brazil follow a “horizontal” or “lateral” approach that postulates the homogeneity of AI, seeks to identify common causes of harm, and demands uniform human interventions. In contrast, the United States (U.S.), the United Kingdom (U.K.), Israel, and Switzerland (and potentially China) have pursued a “context-specific” or “modular” approach, tailoring regulations to the specific use cases of AI systems. …

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Proneural transcription factors establish molecular cascades to orchestrate neuronal diversity. One such transcription factor, Atonal homolog 1 (Atoh1), gives rise to cerebellar excitatory neurons and over 30 distinct nuclei in the brainstem critical for hearing, breathing, and balance. Although Atoh1 lineage neurons have been qualitatively described, the transcriptional programs that drive their fate decisions and the full extent of their diversity remain unknown. Here, we analyzed single-cell RNA sequencing and ATOH1 DNA binding in Atoh1 lineage neurons of the developing mouse hindbrain. This high-resolution dataset identified markers for specific brainstem nuclei and demonstrated that transcriptionally heterogeneous progenitors require ATOH1 for …

Illuminating The Twilight Zone: In-Situ Imaging Facilitates Discovery Of Mesopelagic Plankton Dynamics And Community Structure, Alexander Barth Aug 2024

Illuminating The Twilight Zone: In-Situ Imaging Facilitates Discovery Of Mesopelagic Plankton Dynamics And Community Structure, Alexander Barth

Theses and Dissertations

Ocean ecosystems provide both food and regulation of climate. Much of ocean ecosystem functioning occurs through processes in the pelagic, where plankton are the dominant organisms. While plankton have been researched for several centuries, recent advances in technology are greatly improving the ability to better understand plankton and how their communities are structured. Specifically, in-situ imaging allows oceanographers and plankton ecologists to better sample fragile taxa and record organisms’ true traits at high frequencies. These tools can facilitate investigation into new topics in plankton ecology and better understand critically understudied habitats, like the mesopelagic of open-ocean systems. However, in-situ imaging …

Background The tropical legume Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. can meet three agricultural needs: low-cost protein, highvalue medicines, and green manure or cover crops. But like other underutilized crops, it needs more modern breeding resources. Identifying marker-trait associations (MTAs) can facilitate marker-assisted breeding and crop improvement. Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of identifying MTAs using a small number of accessions (< 100). We have characterized a panel of 70 M. pruriens accessions across two consecutive years and performed association analysis for 16 phenotypic traits related to seed (seed length, seed width, seed thickness, seed yield per plant, hundred seed weight); pod (pod length, pod width, number of pods …

Homelessness in the United States is a significant public health issue, with dermatologic disease being the most prevalent health concern among the undomiciled and sheltered populations. Despite a growing need for dermatologic care, the supply of dermatologists remains insufficient, contributing to disparities in healthcare access for this vulnerable group. This review aims to detail the spectrum of dermatologic conditions experienced by homeless individuals, identify barriers to adequate care, and explore teledermatology as a potential solution to bridge these gaps. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing studies and reports on dermatologic issues prevalent among the homeless population and the efficacy …

Testing Strategies To Develop A Mucosal T Cell Inducing Vaccine For Hiv-1, Reynolds Boone Aug 2024

Testing Strategies To Develop A Mucosal T Cell Inducing Vaccine For Hiv-1, Reynolds Boone

Master's Theses

Despite numerous efforts, HIV vaccine is still not available. Because HIV Envelop protein varies among subtypes and isolates, it is impossible for one vaccine against HIV Env to induce neutralizing antibodies against all subtypes and isolates. Previous vaccine attempts inducing HIV-specific CD4+ T cells have even been shown to enhance the HIV infection because HIV preferentially infects activated CD4+ T cells. It is known that CD8+ cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) play an important role in controlling HIV infections. We hypothesize that a vaccine inducing only CD8+ CTLs but not CD4+ T cells will be effective in preventing HIV infections. Thus, …

The estimation of the postmortem interval for skeletal remains is a crucial aspect of forensic anthropology. This paper illustrates the importance of radiocarbon analysis for establishing medico-legal significance and supporting forensic identification, through the analysis of three case studies for which the years of both birth and death were investigated. In Audresselles, Northern France, a partial skull was discovered with no contextual information or identity. Radiocarbon dating yielded an average calibrated calendar age of 4232 BCE (92.5% probability), indicating significant archaeological value but no forensic relevance. In the second case, skeletal remains were found in the flooded underground of a …

(Re)Imagining Decolonial Cookbooks After Deforestation, Kamran Shams Aug 2024

(Re)Imagining Decolonial Cookbooks After Deforestation, Kamran Shams

Theses and Dissertations

Food, like most else, is fundamentally changed by colonization. It is not just the aftermath of colonization, the settlement, that changes food—it is the act of colonial infiltrating itself. Such is the case made by Fernando Ismael Quiñones Valdivia in “Colonial Imaginations: Solitude in the Cartas y Relaciones of Hernán Cortés”—though not for food but for colonized societies broadly. More specifically, he contends that a new epistemological possibility arises when colonizer regards land as an object to be conquered, which precedes the epistemological articulation of subject/object divide. His article supplies a framework for thinking about coloniality so that a close …

A Formative Process Evaluation Of Social Care Programming In A Health Care System Serving A Predominantly Rural State, Samuel Bethel

Theses and Dissertations

Health and social care continue to integrate, but relatively little is known about how social care is designed, implemented, and maintained across the health care continuum. This is especially true for health systems serving rural and under-resourced communities. To fill these gaps, this dissertation project applied formative process evaluation methods to a single case study of the largest health care system serving a predominantly rural state and its integrated social care programming. Data were collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews following a purposeful and snowball sampling method among key informants for the design, implementation, and maintenance of social care programming as …
