There is a lack of published research on the evaluation of academic success among student-athletes in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 2 (D2) institutions. Our study focused on comparing academic performance and career prospects between student-athletes and non-athletes (traditional students) at a D2 university. A survey measuring academic and career-related variables was administered to 170 participants, with 92 (54%) being student-athletes and 78 (46%) being non-athlete students. Our findings revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of study hours, grade point average, and academic motivation. Moreover, there were no disparities in declared majors, expected graduation …

Forest and Society
The 0.6% contribution of the forestry sector to GDP is considered very low despite 64.1% of Indonesia's land area being allocated as forests. Most of the 64.8% production forest allocated is not yet optimized for strengthening national food security, in which Indonesia is ranked 65th in the world. Therefore, an innovative forest management system is needed to synergize timber and non-timber production. This paper presents a multi-business forestry (Mb-F) implementation strategy analyzed through a dynamic system-based multi-criterion decision-making tool named Super Model Mb-F (SM Mb-F). SM Mb-F is built based on a causal loop diagram (CLD), which describes the dynamic …

A novel Fe3O4@coPPy-PTH nanocomposite-based sorbent was prepared via in-situ oxidative polymerization using Fe3O4 nanoparticles with spherical and flower-like morphologies of thiophene and pyrrole as the feedstocks. The synthesized nanocomposite utilized sensitive extraction and determination of the metal ions Co(II), Cr(III), and Ni(II) without a chelating agent, followed by a micro-sample injection system-flame atomic absorption spectrometer (MIS-FAAS). The composition and morphology of Fe3O4@coPPy-PTH nanocomposite were characterized by advanced spectroscopic and imaging techniques like SEM and FT-IR. SEM observations showed the size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles changed from 30 nm to 120 nm in diameter after the copolymer (PPy-PTH) coating. The Fe3O4@coPPy-PTH nanocomposite …

Inflammation is a response to injury and infection in the organism. It can be categorized as acute and chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is the underlying cause of many diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have proven the anti-inflammatory properties of 1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs) and its derivatives, which have many biological properties including calcium channel blockers. The structures of the synthesized compounds were elucidated by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HRMS methods. The cytotoxic properties of the compounds were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method in 3T3 cell line. Among the 15 compounds, the three compounds …

Analysis of substances and samples obtained from the crime scene are very important in solving forensic cases. In order to determine the variables involved in a crime and to expedite the investigation process, especially the rapid analysis of body fluids in a small quantity and within an environment containing diverse components is necessary. For this reason, it is of great importance to analyse biological fluids with rapid, non-chemical contamination, non-destructive, low-cost and accurate techniques. In recent years, with advancements in laser technology, spectroscopic methods have been introduced as an analytical technique in forensic medicine and chemical studies. This study focuses …

Preparation Of A Chiral Hyperbranched Polymer Based On Cinchona Alkaloids And Investigation Of Its Catalytic Activity In Asymmetric Reactions, Rafiqul Islam, Mohammad Shahid Ullah, Abdus Salam, Shinichi Itsuno
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Cinchona alkaloid-derived sulfonamides and ester dimers containing chiral hyperbranched polymers have been successfully synthesized and applied as catalysts in asymmetric reactions. Several hyperbranched polymers derived from cinchona alkaloids, incorporating sulfonamides and esters, were synthesized through Mizoroki–Heck coupling polymerization. These polymers were subsequently applied in enantioselective Michael addition reactions. As the prepared polymers are not soluble in frequently used organic solvents, they act as efficient catalysts in the enantioselective reaction of β-ketoesters to nitroolefins, achieving up to 99% enantioselectivity with good yields. The insoluble property allows them to better satisfy “green chemistry” requirements and be used several times without losing the …

An understudied cognitive bias within eating disorder (ED) psychopathology is Thought-Shape Fusion (TSF), which involves irrational beliefs about the likelihood and moral implications of feared outcomes within the context of ED treatment, with little known about potential process of change to address TSF and ultimately promote ED recovery. We propose cognitive defusion as a process of change, a metacognitive process that emphasizes observing thoughts objectively rather than appraising thoughts as absolute truth. We explored whether cognitive defusion, that is, reductions in body image-related cognitive fusion, mediated the relationship between trait-level TSF and treatment outcomes in a transdiagnostic ED sample of …

A Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Study Of Gas Hydrate Formation And Dissociation, Meisam Adibifard
A Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Study Of Gas Hydrate Formation And Dissociation, Meisam Adibifard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The study of gas hydrates has increased significantly over the last two decades because of their potential application in energy storage, production and transportation, water desalination, refrigeration, gas separation, etc. There is a significant interest in commercially developing natural gas hydrates because the energy content of methane hydrate reservoirs (MHRs) is at least twice that of all conventional fossil fuels combined. Additionally, due to the higher storage capacity of hydrates, it is proposed to sequester CO2 in the form of CO2 hydrate, thereby reducing the amount of greenhouse gases. Hence, hydrates offer a dual solution to two of …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two 3-(p-substituted phenyl)-3a,8a-dihydro-4H-cyclohepta[d]isoxazoles were synthesized by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the corresponding nitrile oxides with cycloheptatriene. Two endoperoxides were synthesized as facially selective and single products in high yields (93-95%) from the reactions of isoxazole derivatives with singlet oxygen. The exact configurations of the endoperoxide with a methyl group in the phenyl ring and the diol synthesized from it were confirmed by X-ray analysis. To elucidate the mechanism, the formation energy of the endoperoxide was investigated by simulations using the software package Gaussian 09 and density functional theory calculations via the M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level method in dichloromethane. The results were consistent with …

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide and has the most lethality ratio for females among all cancers. Although current cancer therapeutics have made considerable advancements, there is still room for improvement in terms of efficacy. Many anticancer drugs have a risk of causing serious adverse effects due to their non-specific cytotoxic effects on both tumor and healthy cells. New therapeutics might have a greater ability to kill cancer cells, reduce the volume of tumors, and improve overall therapy response rates. Herein, we report the efficient synthesis and characterization of three amphi vic-dioximes and their …

Rational Design Of Allosteric Macromolecular Switches For Specific Biosensing And Conditional Genetic Control, Chenggang Xi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Living cells inherently perceive and react to environmental stimuli, enabling communication within and between communities and across biological kingdoms. To harness the power of these natural genetic regulatory systems, synthetic biology has expanded its toolkit, facilitating applications in biosensing and metabolic engineering. However, natural sensory elements often face challenges in rapidly differentiating and accurately reporting chemicals with high structural resemblance, particularly in complex biomedical or environmental samples. In this work, we have enhanced the performance of existing genetic circuits to remove signal crosstalk, achieving exclusive responses to single effectors, and we have implemented modular sensory elements to expand detection ranges …

Currently, the clinical cure rate for primary liver cancer remains low. Effective screening and early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain clinical challenges. Exosomes are intimately associated with tumor development and their contents have the potential to serve as highly sensitive tumor-specific markers. A comprehensive untargeted metabolomics study was conducted using exosome samples extracted from the serum of 48 subjects (36 HCC patients and 12 healthy controls) via a commercial kit. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) strategy was used to identify the metabolic compounds. A total of 18 differential metabolites were identified using the non-targeted metabolomics approach of UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS. …

The Complex Molecular Epileptogenesis Landscape Of Glioblastoma, Victoria Soeung, Ralph B Puchalski, Jeffrey L Noebels
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The cortical microenvironment surrounding malignant glioblastoma is a source of depolarizing crosstalk favoring hyperexcitability, tumor expansion, and immune evasion. Neosynaptogenesis, excess glutamate, and altered intrinsic membrane currents contribute to excitability dyshomeostasis, yet only half of the cases develop seizures, suggesting that tumor and host genomics, along with location, rather than mass effect, play a critical role. We analyzed the spatial contours and expression of 358 clinically validated human epilepsy genes in the human glioblastoma transcriptome compared to non-tumor adult and developing cortex datasets. Nearly half, including dosage-sensitive genes whose expression levels are securely linked to monogenic epilepsy, are strikingly enriched …

Overexpression and aberrant activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) contribute to tumorigenesis, drug resistance, and tumor-immune evasion, making it a potential cancer therapeutic target. BP1003 is a neutral liposome incorporated with a nuclease-resistant P-ethoxy antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ASO) targeting the STAT3 mRNA. Its unique design enhances BP1003 stability, cellular uptake, and target affinity. BP1003 efficiently reduces STAT3 expression and enhances the sensitivity of breast cancer cells (HER2+, triple negative) and ovarian cancer cells (late stage, invasive ovarian cancer) to paclitaxel and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in both 2D and 3D cell cultures. Similarly, ex vivo and in …

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder characterized by hemoglobin S polymerization leading to vaso-occlusion and hemolytic anemia. These result in a variety of pathological events, causing both acute and chronic complications. Millions around the world are affected by sickle cell disease with predominance in sub-Saharan Africa. Hydroxyurea was the first drug approved for use in sickle cell disease to reduce the occurrence of painful crises and blood transfusions in patients with frequent, moderate to severe painful crises.
AREAS COVERED: With the development of new therapeutics, the role of hydroxyurea is evolving. This narrative review aims to provide clinical …

Heterometallic hydride complexes are of growing interest due to their potential to contribute to highly active insertion-based catalysis; however, methods to modulate electron density within this class of molecules are underexplored. Addition of ancillary ligands to heterotrimetallic NiAl2H2 species (1) results in the formation of heterobimetallic NiAl-hydride complexes with varying phosphine donors (2-(L)2). Incorporation of sigma donating ancillary ligands of increasing strength led to contractions of the Ni–Al distances correlated to a strengthening of a back donation interaction to the Al–H sigma antibonding orbital, most prominently present in 2-(PMe3)2. Demethylation of the aryl ether from 2-(PMe3)2 provides access to a …

Identifying The Interactors Of Otud6b-2 That Are Important For Its Function On C-Myc, Farah Albatsh
Master's Theses
The complexity of molecular signaling pathways, particularly in cancer research, has made the proto-oncogene c-Myc a key focus due to its role as a master regulator of cellular processes such as growth, division, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of c-Myc is linked to various cancers, making it a highly sought therapeutic target despite challenges in directly inhibiting its function. Recent efforts have shifted towards indirect targeting methods, including BET inhibitors, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, and siRNA formulations. A novel approach using PROTACs and the investigation of c-Myc-specific deubiquitinases (DUBs) has shown potential, particularly the emerging player OTUD6B-2. This study aims to identify and …

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests a central role for inflammation in cardiac conduction disorder (CCD). It is unknown whether habitual physical activity could modulate the inflammation-associated risks of incident CCD in the general population. METHODS AND RESULTS: This population-based cohort was derived from the China Kailuan study, including a total of 97 192 participants without prior CCD. The end points included incident CCD and its subcategories (atrioventricular block and bundlebranch block). Systemic inflammation was indicated by the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR). Over a median 10.91-year follow-up, 3747 cases of CCD occurred, with 1062 cases of atrioventricular block and 2697 cases of bundle-branch …
