Patent Law And Access To Biotechnology, Enoch Otim Aug 2024

Patent Law And Access To Biotechnology, Enoch Otim

Technology and Economics Law Journal

The research analyzes the use of patents in a field other than industry and how they have a wider impact than the monetary gain of the patent holder. In recent years, patents have been taken out on organisms and gene sequences, which has a flow-on effect of jeopardizing any further research in that area and possible future developments. This is a serious issue in the fast-moving field of medical biotechnology. For example, researchers patented and developed a test that utilized and identified a gene sequence that was later patented by another party. The researchers may have to discontinue the test …

Micropatterning Of Biologically Derived Surfaces With Functional Clay Nanotubes, Nisha Lama Aug 2024

Micropatterning Of Biologically Derived Surfaces With Functional Clay Nanotubes, Nisha Lama

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we have generalized an assembly of 50 nm diameter clay nanotubes on larger 20-50 μm diameter biological microfibers such as human hair (protein), cotton (cellulose) and synthetic polyethylene terephthalate- PET. We developed a common set of parameters and nanoclay coating techniques on these naturally different microfibers. We exploited and optimized the electrostatic interaction of the components through strategic adjustments in the solvent pH, employing polycation treatment, as well as selectively modifying the halloysite nanotubes with silanes. For 5 mins, a 5 wt% aqueous dispersion of halloysite nanotubes were applied to get approximately 1-2 μm thick fiber coating …

Robotic Odor Source Localization Using Vision And Olfaction Sensing, Sunzid Hassan Aug 2024

Robotic Odor Source Localization Using Vision And Olfaction Sensing, Sunzid Hassan

Master's Theses

Robotic Odor Source Localization (ROSL) technology allows autonomous agents like robots to find an odor source in unknown environments. A successful odor source location depends crucially on an effective navigation algorithm that directs the robot towards the odor source. This thesis is a combination of three projects. First, we detail development of a versatile multi-modal robotic platform for ROSL real-world ROSL experimentation and discussed real-world validation of a traditional olfactionbased ROSL algorithm. Secondly, we introduced vision in ROSL by proposing a fusion navigation algorithm that integrates deep-learning enabled vision and olfaction-based navigation. This hybrid approach tackles challenges such as turbulent …

The State Of Elementary School Recess In Georgia: Policy, The Pandemic, And Patterns Of Play, Karyn A. Alee, Erica Decuir, Dawn M. Robinson

Education Faculty Publications

While we continue to see a growing push for the restoration and codification of recess in elementary schools, policy does not necessarily equal practice. Georgia recently passed legislation requiring at least 20 minutes of recess per day for students in PK-5. The purpose of this research study was to survey elementary school educators to reveal the temporal (i.e., duration, frequency, and cancellation practices) and descriptive (i.e., type, equipment, place) characteristics of recess in Georgia’s public elementary schools. The results of this study, which can be summed up statistically and descriptively as less recess overall, and less free play specifically, as …

Chicago’S Migrant Serving Ecosystem: Perspectives From Providers On The Frontline, Safa S. Asad Aug 2024

Chicago’S Migrant Serving Ecosystem: Perspectives From Providers On The Frontline, Safa S. Asad

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Global destabilization has resulted in nearly 110 million people forcibly displaced from their homes. Sanctuary cities like Chicago have become “migrant hubs,” seeing thousands of migrants enter the city to access shelter and resources. City officials have called for more support, as the number of migrants has outweighed the number of migrant service providers.

Migrant service organizations play an integral role in the resettlement journey of migrants. These organizations provide direct and indirect services to support their clients. However, as the migrant crisis continues to worsen, it threatens the social safety net established by governments and immigrant serving nonprofit agencies …

Slow Ramping Emerges From Spontaneous Fluctuations In Spiking Neural Networks, Jake Gavenas, Ueli Rutishauer, Aaron Schurger, Uri Maoz

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The capacity to initiate actions endogenously is critical for goal-directed behavior. Spontaneous voluntary actions are typically preceded by slow-ramping activity in medial frontal cortex that begins around two seconds before movement, which may reflect spontaneous fluctuations that influence action timing. However, the mechanisms by which these slow ramping signals emerge from single-neuron and network dynamics remain poorly understood. Here, we developed a spiking neural-network model that produces spontaneous slow ramping activity in single neurons and population activity with onsets ~2 s before threshold crossings. A key prediction of our model is that neurons that ramp together have correlated firing patterns …

Phlebotomine sand flies are the vectors of leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease. High-quality reference genomes are an important tool for understanding the biology and eco-evolutionary dynamics underpinning disease epidemiology. Previous leishmaniasis vector reference sequences were limited by sequencing technologies available at the time and inadequate for high-resolution genomic inquiry. Here, we present updated reference assemblies of two sand flies, Phlebotomus papatasi and Lutzomyia longipalpis. These chromosome-level assemblies were generated using an ultra-low input library protocol, PacBio HiFi long reads, and Hi-C technology. The new P. papatasi reference has a final assembly span of 351.6 Mb and contig and scaffold N50s …

On The Formation And Detectability Of H2Cncn And Its Progenitors, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Vincent J. Esposito

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

New highly exothermic formation pathways incorporating both thermodynamic and kinetic control for the newly astronomically detected H2CNCN molecule are paired with extremely accurate quantum chemical rovibrational spectroscopic computations. The reactions between astronomically known CH2CN/CH2CCH + HNCN follow effectively identical pathways and proceed through stable intermediates and over deeply submerged transition states to form H2CNCN and HCN/HCCH coproducts. Similarly, the reaction between CHM2CN and NCN can also form H2CNCN, although this pathway first requires the initial formation of NCN, which is currently undetected in space, via …

Technical Note: Assessing Gps Sensor Accuracy Using Real-Time Kinematic Device For Livestock Tracking, Biquan Zhao, Rebecca Mcdermott, Galen E. Erickson, Yijie Xiong Aug 2024

Technical Note: Assessing Gps Sensor Accuracy Using Real-Time Kinematic Device For Livestock Tracking, Biquan Zhao, Rebecca Mcdermott, Galen E. Erickson, Yijie Xiong

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The technical aspects of global positioning system (GPS) sensors have been improved substantially over the years, making them valuable and popular tools for livestock tracking. Using GPS sensors allows producers and researchers to locate grazing livestock, monitor their behavior and distribution, and gather referencing information about the health status of the animals and pastures. However, interpreting the behavior of grazing livestock, such as cattle, from GPS data can be difficult due to positioning inaccuracies. Without knowing the positioning accuracy range of GPS sensors, achieving high-level confidence in determining grazing densities and identifying abnormal livestock movement patterns is challenging. …

Partition Between Supercooled Liquid Droplets And Ice Crystals In Mixed-Phase Clouds Based On Airborne In Situ Observations, Flor Vanessa Maciel, Minghui Diao, Ching An Yang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The onset of ice nucleation in mixed-phase clouds determines the lifetime and microphysical properties of ice clouds. In this work, we develop a novel method that differentiates between various phases of mixed-phase clouds, such as clouds dominated by pure liquid or pure ice segments, compared with those having ice crystals surrounded by supercooled liquid water droplets or vice versa. Using this method, we examine the relationship between the macrophysical and microphysical properties of Southern Ocean mixed-phase clouds at − 40 to 0 °C (e.g. stratiform and cumuliform clouds) based on the in situ aircraft-based observations during the US National Science …

Optogenetic Control Of Bacterial Dormancy, Yousr Dhaouadi Khattab Aug 2024

Optogenetic Control Of Bacterial Dormancy, Yousr Dhaouadi Khattab

Dissertations - ALL

The presence of persister cells makes it difficult to eradicate chronic bacterial infections as these dormant subpopulations arise with exposure to stressors and are capable of surviving antimicrobials that target active cells. Persisters can also revert back to normal growing cells when stressors are removed thus reestablishing the infection. It is therefore important to understand the underlying mechanisms of persister formation, as well as wake-up, and target these systems in order to treat chronic bacterial infections. The formation of persisters, however, remains elusive as there is not yet a clear relationship between the various stages of dormancy. Persister cells can …
