New Mothers Know Best? Second-Parent Choices At Birth, Jeffrey A. Parness Aug 2024

New Mothers Know Best? Second-Parent Choices At Birth, Jeffrey A. Parness

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Professor Jessica Feinberg recently observed that state laws governing the ability of an individual who gives birth (“gestating parent”) “to exercise meaningful choice within the determination of who is deemed the child’s second legal parent differ drastically depending on factors such as their marital status, the method of the child’s conception, and the gender of the desired second parent.” She found many of the differences “problematic,” having “no underlying theory that provides a consistent explanation for the law’s current approach.” Moreover, she urged “reform . . . to create a more coherent and just legal framework governing the degree of …

Dynamic Optimization With Timing Risk, Erin Cottle Hunt, Frank N. Caliendo Aug 2024

Dynamic Optimization With Timing Risk, Erin Cottle Hunt, Frank N. Caliendo

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Timing risk refers to a situation in which the timing of an economically important event is unknown (risky) from the perspective of an economic decision maker. While this special class of dynamic stochastic control problems has many applications in economics, the methods used to solve them are not easily accessible within a single, comprehensive survey. We provide a survey of dynamic optimization methods under comprehensive assumptions about the nature of timing risk. We also relax the assumption of full information and summarize optimization with limited information, ambiguity, imperfect hedging, and dynamic inconsistency. Our goal is to provide a concise user …

Why Is The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Beijing Genotype So Prevalent In Colón, Panama? Uncovering The Risk Factors Of A Dangerous Strain, Daniela Candanedo Aug 2024

Why Is The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Beijing Genotype So Prevalent In Colón, Panama? Uncovering The Risk Factors Of A Dangerous Strain, Daniela Candanedo

International Programs

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide (WHO, 2021). In Panama, TB incidence is 45.3 per 100,000 population, affecting underdeveloped areas like the Colón province (MINSA, 2023). The Beijing genotype (Lineage 2), known for its high transmissibility and multidrug resistance, poses a significant challenge (Pérez-Lago et al., 2019). A novel molecular surveillance method using allele-specific oligonucleotide PCR (ASO-PCR) was developed to identify Beijing, Haarlem and LAM genotypes in Colón, Panama (Domínguez et al., 2019). This technique detected 44.1% of Beijing strain and <5% of Haarlem and LAM strains between 2018-2020 (Acosta et al., 2020). This method was also applied between 2021-2022, identifying 29.1% of Beijing strain (Candanedo et al., 2023). This study aims to identify and analyze the epidemiological risk factors associated with the Beijing strain infection in Colón, Panama between 2025-2026. Demographic, clinical, and geographic variables will be assessed to better understand the infection and transmission dynamics. The findings will provide critical information to enhance TB control and prevention strategies in Colón, influence health policy formulation, and optimize resource allocation.

We evaluate the impact of donor types on outcomes of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in myelofibrosis, using the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research registry data for HCTs done between 2013 and 2019. In all 1597 patients, the use of haploidentical donors increased from 3% in 2013 to 19% in 2019. In study-eligible 1032 patients who received peripheral blood grafts for chronic-phase myelofibrosis, 38% of recipients of haploidentical HCT were non-White/Caucasian. Matched sibling donor (MSD)-HCTs were associated with superior overall survival (OS) in the first 3 months (haploidentical hazard ratio [HR], 5.80 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.52-13.35]; matched …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Supergrowth refers to the local amplitude growth rate of a signal being faster than its fastest Fourier mode. In contrast, superoscillation pertains to the variation of the phase. Compared to the latter, supergrowth can have exponentially higher intensities and promises improvement over superoscillation-based superresolution imaging. Here, we demonstrate the experimental synthesis of controlled supergrowing fields with a maximum growth rate of ∼19.07 times the system bandlimit. Our work is an essential step toward realizing supergrowth-based far-field superresolution imaging.

Antimicrobial Studies Of Novel Pyrazole And Thiazole-Based Antibacterial Agents, Hansa Raj Kc

Student Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a global concern, resulting in fewer effective antibiotics. Several conventional antibacterial agents are ineffective against these, necessitating novel molecules with enhanced efficacy and diverse actions. We developed pyrazole and thiazole-based antibacterial agents and demonstrated that they have significant potency (minimum inhibitory concentration as low as 0.39 µg/mL) against antibiotic-resistant and susceptible bacteria, as well as promising anti-biofilm and anti-persister activity. In vivo toxicity tests on Caenorhabditis elegans showed no significant harm to this model host organism at low compound concentrations. These compounds rescued C. elegans from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) …

Osteoclasts are multinucleated bone-resorbing cells, and their formation is tightly regulated to prevent excessive bone loss. However, the mechanisms by which osteoclast formation is restricted remain incompletely determined. Here, we found that sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2) functions as a negative regulator of osteoclast formation and inflammatory bone loss. Cholesterols and SREBP2, a key transcription factor for cholesterol biosynthesis, increased in the late phase of osteoclastogenesis. The ablation of SREBP2 in myeloid cells resulted in increased in vivo and in vitro osteoclastogenesis, leading to low bone mass. Moreover, deletion of SREBP2 accelerated inflammatory bone destruction in murine inflammatory …

Voltammetric Determination Of Hydrogen Peroxide At Decorated Palladium Nanoparticles/Poly 1,5- Diaminonaphthalene Modified Carbon-Paste Electrode, Ziad Khalifa, Mohamed Fathi Abo Oura, Magdi Abdelazzem, Ablah Hathoot

Chemical Engineering

In this work, palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs)/p1,5-DAN/ carbon paste electrode (CPE) and p1,5-DAN/CPE sensors have been developed for determination of hydrogen peroxide. Both sensors showed a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical behaviour, which were derived from a large specific area of poly 1,5 DAN and super excellent electroconductibility of PdNPs. PdNPs/p1,5-DAN/CPE exhibited excellent performance over p1,5-DAN/CPE. Thus, it was used for detecting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with linear ranges of 0.1 to 250 μM and 0.2 to 300 μM as well as detection limits (S/N= 3) of 1.0 and 5.0 nM for square wave voltammetry (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (C.V) techniques, respectively. …

Kindlin-2 is a cytoskeletal adapter protein that is present in many different cell types. By virtue of its interaction with multiple binding partners, Kindlin-2 intercalates into numerous signaling pathways and cytoskeletal nodes. A specific interaction of Kindlin-2 that is of paramount importance in many cellular responses is its direct binding to the cytoplasmic tails of integrins, an interaction that controls many of the adhesive, migratory and signaling responses mediated by members of the integrin family of cell-surface heterodimers. Kindlin-2 is highly expressed in many cancers and is particularly prominent in prostate cancer cells. CRISPR/cas9 was used as a primary approach …

Aged-Out Foster Youths’ Exposure To Spiritual Foster Homes And Transition Into Adulthood, Dr. Valerie Elaine Sims

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are 438,000 children and youth in foster care in the United States; almost 46,000 are aged 16 or older, and over 20,000 “age out” of many child welfare services between ages 18 and 20 every year. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experience of foster youth growing up in a spiritual foster home (incorporating religious belief, practice, higher power, Bible study, or youth groups) and aging out of the system through the lens of faith-based theory. This study had a sample size of eight participants, ages 18 to 25, who transitioned out of the foster care …

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone malignancy in children and young adults, and it has few treatment options. As a result, there has been little improvement in survival outcomes in the past few decades. The need for models to test novel therapies is especially great in this disease since it is both rare and does not respond to most therapies. To address this, an NCI-funded consortium has characterized and utilized a panel of patient-derived xenograft models of osteosarcoma for drug testing. The exomes, transcriptomes, and copy number landscapes of these models have been presented previously. This study now adds …

Underrepresentation of racial and ethnic subgroups in cancer clinical trials remains a persistent challenge. Restrictive clinical trial eligibility criteria have been shown to exacerbate this problem. We previously identified that up to 24% of patients treated with standard immunochemotherapy would have been excluded from recent first-line trials in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) based on 5 laboratory-based criteria. These ineligible patients had worse clinical outcomes and increased deaths related to lymphoma progression, suggesting the potential exclusion of patients who could have benefited most from the novel therapies being evaluated. Using data from the prospectively enrolled Lymphoma Epidemiology Outcomes cohort study, …

We investigate JN.1-derived subvariants SLip, FLiRT, and KP.2 for neutralization by antibodies in vaccinated individuals, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected patients, or class III monoclonal antibody S309. Compared to JN.1, SLip, KP.2, and especially FLiRT exhibit increased resistance to bivalent-vaccinated and BA.2.86/JN.1-wave convalescent human sera. XBB.1.5 monovalent-vaccinated hamster sera robustly neutralize FLiRT and KP.2 but have reduced efficiency for SLip. All subvariants are resistant to S309 and show decreased infectivity, cell-cell fusion, and spike processing relative to JN.1. Modeling reveals that L455S and F456L in SLip reduce spike binding for ACE2, while R346T in FLiRT and KP.2 strengthens …

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a pathogenic arthritogenic alphavirus responsible for large-scale human epidemics for which a vaccine was recently approved for use. Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a related emerging alphavirus with epidemic potential with circulation overlap potential with CHIKV. We previously reported the ability of a non-replicating human adenovirus (AdV)-vectored vaccine expressing the MAYV structural polyprotein to protect against disease in mice following challenge with MAYV, CHIKV and UNAV. Herein, we evaluated mouse immunity and protective efficacy for an AdV-CHIKV full structural polyprotein vaccine in combination with heterologous AdV-MAYV prime/boost regimens versus vaccine coadministration. Heterologous prime/boost regimens skewed immunity toward …

Dual Color Optogenetic Tool Enables Heart Arrest, Bradycardic, And Tachycardic Pacing In Drosophila Melanogaster, Elena Gracheva, Yuxuan Wang, Jiantao Zhu, Fei Wang, Abigail Matt, Matthew Fishman, Hongwu Liang, Chao Zhou

2020-Current year OA Pubs

In order to facilitate cardiovascular research to develop non-invasive optical heart pacing methods, we have generated a double-transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) model suitable for optogenetic pacing. We created a fly stock with both excitatory H134R-ChR2 and inhibitory eNpHR2.0 opsin transgenes. Opsins were expressed in the fly heart using the Hand-GAL4 driver. Here we describe Hand > H134R-ChR2; eNpHR2.0 model characterization including bi-directional heart control (activation and inhibition) upon illumination of light with distinct wavelengths. Optical control and real-time visualization of the heart function were achieved non-invasively using an integrated light stimulation and optical coherence microscopy (OCM) system. OCM produced high-speed …

Global Metaphors For Wisdom: Philosophy As A Species Of The Genus Hao-Xue, Joshua Mason Aug 2024

Global Metaphors For Wisdom: Philosophy As A Species Of The Genus Hao-Xue, Joshua Mason

Comparative Philosophy

Many philosophers have refused to recognize Chinese traditions as genuinely philosophical. The conceptual foundations of these exclusionary efforts appear in Aristotle’s dividing philosophy from rhetoric, then associating philosophy with truth, and rhetoric with metaphor. The Chinese have frequently been defined as metaphorical thinkers, in contrast with the logical, scientific, or literal pursuits of Occidental traditions. Because metaphor is classed with rhetoric, and Chinese was associated with metaphor, critics had a way to say that the Chinese weren’t participating in philia-sophia as rational inquiry into truth. I draw on two strands of 20th century philosophy to move us beyond this …

From Contemplation To Counseling: Exploring Philosophical Practice By Constructive-Engagement Strategy Of Comparative Philosophy, Xiaojun Ding, Chao Yang, Peter Harteloh, Feng Yu

Comparative Philosophy

This paper applies Bo Mou’s Constructive-Engagement Strategy of Comparative Philosophy (CESCP) to explore philosophical practice as a novel paradigm that applies philosophy to everyday life. The study advocates for a transformative methodology that seeks truth through critical engagement, joint contributions, and diverse methodological tools, advancing the discipline towards a comprehensive world philosophy. Philosophical practice, characterized by its engagement with human experience and existential inquiries, integrates Eastern and Western philosophies to guide individuals in the art of living. It offers a philosophical alternative to psychological counseling, focusing on reasoning to address life’s challenges and ethical dilemmas. The paper examines the integration …

Chinese Feminist Philosophy: Philosophizing Chinese Feminism In Transcultural Contexts, Yuanfang Dai Aug 2024

Chinese Feminist Philosophy: Philosophizing Chinese Feminism In Transcultural Contexts, Yuanfang Dai

Comparative Philosophy

This paper aims to develop a Chinese feminist philosophy while positioning a transcultural approach as an alternative to transnational and national feminism. It focuses on Chinese feminist scholarship from the mid-1990s to the present. My main argument is that the intellectual development of Chinese feminist scholarship in the past three decades has been significantly influenced by U.S.-centric global feminism and international feminism, while at the same time being drawn from an existing history of feminism in China and reflections on the complicated relationship between global influences and local Chinese conditions. Transcultural feminism is something I see emerging out of the …

A Realist Daoism: Reading The Zhuang-Zi With Lao Zi's Daoist Realism, Wai Lok Cheung Aug 2024

A Realist Daoism: Reading The Zhuang-Zi With Lao Zi's Daoist Realism, Wai Lok Cheung

Comparative Philosophy

A realist Daoism is best illustrated through contrasting with something less robust. Chad Hansens Daoism may be understood as a linguistic constructivism and is thus a good candidate. I challenge his interpretation of the Zhuang-Zi and respond with a realist understanding of daos. The resultant realist Daoism is to be understood given a Daoist realism from Lao Zis Dao-De-Jing, whose realist flavour is constituted by some dao sometimes, if not always, outrunning us. The present paper thus situates Zhuang Zi better as inheriting Daoism from Lao Zi, contributing to classical Daoism with a relativity …

Righteousness Versus Yi: Two Senses Of Justice, Cuiting Chen

Comparative Philosophy

The narratives of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac in the Old Testament and Shun’s renunciation of the throne to save his father, who had committed a crime in Meng-Zi, have had a profound influence on Western and Chinese culture. The two stories are widely known and referenced due to their cultural significance, which is evident in various artistic, literary, religious, and philosophical forms. While the two narratives may be viewed as murder and corruption from a universal ethical standpoint, historical traditions interpret them differently. Abraham’s actions are revered as the epitome of righteousness, while Shun’s actions exemplify the most appropriate ( …

Foraging Strategies Of Ruminant Livestock On Intensively Managed Grasslands: Potential And Constraints, I J. Gordon, C Lascano Aug 2024

Foraging Strategies Of Ruminant Livestock On Intensively Managed Grasslands: Potential And Constraints, I J. Gordon, C Lascano

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

All grazed swards exhibit heterogeneity in the spatial (horizontal and vertical) dispersion of species/biomass. A herbivore foraging at random within such a heterogeneous environment would ingest less nutrients than wou Id one which exploited the heterogeneity on offer through selective grazing. The suite of decision-making processes involved in the selective grazing we observe is termed the animal's foraging strategy. On first observation, intensively managed sown swards appear to offer little opportunity for a herbivore to exhibit a foraging strategy; however, opporlunities do exist and there is empirical evidence that herbivores foraging on sown swards tend to have a diet higher …

Comparative Foraging Strategies Of Grazing Ungulates In African Savanna Grasslands, N Owen-Smith, D H.M Cumming

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

We review the evolutionary (species-specific) and ecological (individual behavioural) strategies of African grazing ungulates. The contexts considered are free-ranging wild ungulates, traditional livestock pastoralism and extensive commercial ranching. Particularly successful are (1) buffalo, able to digest grass fibre effectively in mesic grasslands; (2) wildebeest, exploiting semi-arid grasslands through migration; (3) megaherbivores (elephant, hippopotamus and white rhinoceros) utilising a wide range of vegetation components. Species-specific adaptations include body size and metabolic rate, digestive efficiency and passage rate, oral and dental anatomy, water dependence and detoxification capacity. Species overlap in grass species se'lected, with dietary differences apparent in grass height favoured, and …
