Environmental Law Update, William J. Anaya, Eric Berry, Koplan Nwabuoku, Nathan Quaglia, Lisle Stalter
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In the Environmental Law Update for 2023, we report on recent decisions issued by the United States Supreme Court involving the Clean Water Act and Wetlands, and the Court’s “Dormant Commerce Clause” and its recently created “Major Question Doctrine.” Regulating Wetlands has been a challenge in light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, and we examine how the agencies charged with enforcing Wetland regulation have reacted and how those cases are progressing in the lower courts. We also examine the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s recent interpretation of the “Manufacturing Process Unit” regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, …

Renewable Energy In Illinois: The Agrivoltaics Contribution, Quin E. Karhoff, A. Bryan Enders, Jessica L. Guarino, Tyler J. Swanson
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Siting of renewable energy production facilities on agricultural land often engenders conflict at the community level. The desire to preserve productive farmland and protect aesthetic connections to the rural landscape can be a significant impediment to renewable energy development. With respect to solar energy production, agrivoltaics— the colocation of solar power structures and agriculture—is a potential alternative to traditional binary approaches of characterizing land use. As a novel technological and land use strategy, a better understanding of the agrivoltaic policy environment is necessary to actualize implications for rural communities and progress toward renewable energy goals. Illinois, with its abundance in …

Launchpad And Homebase: Columbus Ohio’S Arts Ecosystem, Rachel Skaggs, Amanda Tobin Ripley
International Journal of Regional Issues in the Arts
This article draws critical attention to strengths and needs within the arts ecosystem of Columbus, Ohio. Relying on interviews and focus groups with artists and arts leaders, we establish three themes as the most prevalent and cross-cutting among artists and arts leaders: needs for community building, paid work, and space. Based on these stated needs, we identify two aspects of the arts ecosystem in Columbus: launchpad and homebase, neither of which fully support artistic careers. We argue that with investment will also come the opportunity to develop a stronger ecosystem that allows artists to live, work, and thrive in Columbus.
Walking Billboards: The Copyright Landscape Of Tattoos In Professional Athletics, Taylor Ingram
Walking Billboards: The Copyright Landscape Of Tattoos In Professional Athletics, Taylor Ingram
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Though tattoos have traditionally been viewed negatively, in the last decade, tattoos have become a popular form of self-expression. Thus, the increasing prevalence of athletes adorned with body art has sparked legal debate on tattoo ownership, protection, and commercialization. This Note briefly outlines tattooing and copyright law histories and provides an overview of copyright law today. As copyright claims by tattoo artists have, until recently, been widely settled out of court, this Note will provide an analysis of the only case to proceed to a jury trial. Based on the above, this Note asserts that tattoos are copyrightable. It further …
Reforming Illinois Paternity/Maternity/Parentage Acknowledgment Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness
Reforming Illinois Paternity/Maternity/Parentage Acknowledgment Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In the 1990s, due to a surge in nonmarital births and the related increase in child support assistance, Congress passed laws making federal aid to states contingent on accessible and standardized paternity establishment processes. This led to in-hospital voluntary paternity acknowledgments (VAPs), which made establishing paternity for child support easier. Federal funding required strict VAP processes, including a sixty-day rescission period and limited grounds for post-rescission challenges.
Voluntary parentage acknowledgments have since expanded to include non-genetic parents, like spouses and intended parents through assisted reproduction. Illinois' Parentage Act of 2015 regulates these acknowledgments. However, the Illinois Appellate Court case, Illinois …

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science
The area of computer science is flourishing, as shown by the rising number of academic works published and the rising number of scholars adding to the existing body of knowledge. This has made it difficult to find previously unrecognized links between publications and those studying them. Using machine learning techniques to foresee missing links and unveil hidden connections, complex network-based link prediction has emerged as a helpful resource in addressing this difficulty. This study aims to solve the problem of finding links between authors’ publications by exploring the use of network-based complex link prediction approaches. A large-scale bibliographic database collected …

Emerin Deficiency Drives Mcf7 Cells To An Invasive Phenotype, Emily Hansen, Christal Rolling, Matthew Wang, James M Holaska
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
During metastasis, cancer cells traverse the vasculature by squeezing through very small gaps in the endothelium. Thus, nuclei in metastatic cancer cells must become more malleable to move through these gaps. Our lab showed invasive breast cancer cells have 50% less emerin protein resulting in smaller, misshapen nuclei, and higher metastasis rates than non-cancerous controls. Thus, emerin deficiency was predicted to cause increased nuclear compliance, cell migration, and metastasis. We tested this hypothesis by downregulating emerin in noninvasive MCF7 cells and found emerin knockdown causes smaller, dysmorphic nuclei, resulting in increased impeded cell migration. Emerin reduction in invasive breast cancer …

A Novel Perfused Contusion Spinal Cord Injury Model To Assess Rapid Mechanical Properties Changes After Blood Spinal Cord Barrier Breakdown, Laura De Marchi
Theses and Dissertations
Blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption exacerbates the tissue damage caused by spinal cord injury (SCI), but the mechanisms and dynamics of how the barrier breakdown affects the mechanical properties of the tissue remain unclear. The perfused bovine ex vivo indentation injury model described here represents a new platform to investigate the short-term effects of altered blood flow and vascular permeability following traumatic spinal cord injury. Our results indicate that injured cords exhibit changes to bulk perfusion, as evidenced by laser speckle contrast imaging, in addition to decreased barrier function shortly after injury. Indentation tests that simultaneously simulate a crush injury …

Phosphorene As A Chemical Nanosensor For Volatile Organic Compound Vapours - A Dft Outlook, Saravanan S
Phosphorene As A Chemical Nanosensor For Volatile Organic Compound Vapours - A Dft Outlook, Saravanan S
Theses and Dissertations
Based on the density functional theory framework, the structural stability of phosphorene allotropes and its various nanostructures are ensured. The various allotropes of phosphorene and its nanostructures such as nanosheets, nanoribbon and nanotubes are used as adsorbing materials for various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as alcohols, chloroform, amines and aldehydes. The results of adsorption energy are used to confirm physisorption or chemisorption of VOCs on phosphorene. In addition, the charge transfer outcome suggests whether phosphorene is acting as acceptor or donor of electrons upon interaction of target VOCs.
The electronic attributes such as band structure, projected density of states …

Emerging evidence suggests a significant contribution of primary cilia to cell division and proliferation. MicroRNAs, especially miR-17, contribute to cell cycle regulation and proliferation. Recent investigations have highlighted the dysregulated expression of miR-17 in various malignancies, underlining its potential role in cancer. However, the correlation between primary cilia and miR-17 has yet to be fully elucidated. The present study examines the presence of miR-17 in primary cilia. The miR-17 expression is studied in selected ciliary protein knockdown cells. Using in situ hybridization (ISH), we identified the subcellular localization of miR-17 in both cilium and cell body. We confirmed the importance …

The density functional theory study of the thermal C–C reductive coupling from terminal cyanido and hypothetical cyaphido complexes of [Ni(dmpe)] (dmpe = 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) revealed the key reaction intermediate in the reductive C–CP coupling being a σ-CC complex unlike an η2-aryl complex in the Ni C–CN system, as already observed in our previous studies. The reaction in THF is endothermic by 4.9 kcal/mol for cyanido with a 32.0 kcal/mol activation barrier and exothermic by 28.5 kcal/mol for cyaphido with an 11.3 kcal/mol activation barrier. To compare our results with the existing experimental data, we chose mesityl as the aryl group and …

Feedback Inhibition By A Descending Gabaergic Neuron Regulates Timing Of Escape Behavior In Drosophila Larvae, Jiayi Zhu, Jean-Christophe Boivin, Alastair Garner, Jing Ning, Yi Q Zhao, Tomoko Ohyama
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Escape behaviors help animals avoid harm from predators and other threats in the environment. Successful escape relies on integrating information from multiple stimulus modalities (of external or internal origin) to compute trajectories toward safe locations, choose between actions that satisfy competing motivations, and execute other strategies that ensure survival. To this end, escape behaviors must be adaptive. When a Drosophila melanogaster larva encounters a noxious stimulus, such as the focal pressure a parasitic wasp applies to the larval cuticle via its ovipositor, it initiates a characteristic escape response. The escape sequence consists of an initial abrupt bending, lateral rolling, and …
Lipopolysaccharide Immune Challenge Stress Biomarkers In Livestock: A Review, Mimosa Medeiros
Lipopolysaccharide Immune Challenge Stress Biomarkers In Livestock: A Review, Mimosa Medeiros
Honors Scholar Theses
Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are a critical component of the cell wall in gram-negative bacteria and play a notable role in the host immune system's response to infection. The LPS challenge, involving the administration of exogenous bacterial LPS to replicate host immune response, provides insight into host responses to inflammatory diseases. Monitoring this response through various stress biomarkers such as serum cytokines, chemokines, white blood cell populations, rectal temperature, and cortisol concentrations enables the understanding of systemic metabolic changes and stress phenotyping. LPS research has the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of stress-resilient livestock. This is particularly important …

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is one of the most important staple crops worldwide. To ensure its global supply, the timing and duration of its growth cycle needs to be closely monitored in the field so that necessary crop management activities can be arranged in a timely manner. Also, breeders and plant researchers need to evaluate growth stages (GSs) for tens of thousands of genotypes at the plot level, at different sites and across multiple seasons. These indicate the importance of providing a reliable and scalable toolkit to address the challenge so that the plot-level assessment of GS can be …

The growing resistance to amoxicillin (AMX)—one of the main antibiotics used in Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy—is an increasing health concern. Several mutations of penicillin-binding protein 1A (PBP1A) are suspected of causing AMX resistance; however, only a limited set of these mutations have been experimentally explored. This study aimed to investigate four PBP1A mutations (i.e., T558S, N562H, T593A, and G595S) carried by strain KIN76, a high-level AMX-resistant clinical H. pylori isolate with an AMX minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of 2 µg/mL. We transformed a recipient strain 26695 with the DNA containing one to four mutation allele combinations of the pbp1 gene …

The Rise Of Dietary Diversity In Coral Reef Fishes, Isabelle Ng, David R. Bellwood, Jan M. Strugnell, Valeriano Parravicini, Alexandre C. Siqueira
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Diet has been identified as a major driver of reef fish lineage diversification, producing one of the most speciose vertebrate assemblages today. Yet, there is minimal understanding of how, when and why diet itself has evolved. To address this, we used a comprehensive gut content dataset, alongside a recently developed phylogenetic comparative method to assess multivariate prey use across a diverse animal assemblage, coral reef fishes. Specifically, we investigated the diversification, transitions and phylogenetic conservatism of fish diets through evolutionary time. We found two major pulses of diet diversification: one at the end-Cretaceous and one during the Eocene, suggesting that …

In recent decades, obesity has become a worldwide epidemic. As a result, the importance of adipose tissue (AT) as a metabolically active storage depot for lipids and a key mediator of body-wide metabolism and energy balance has been increasingly recognized. Emerging from the studies of AT in metabolic disease is a recognition of the importance of the adipocyte progenitor cell (APC) population of AT being the gatekeeper of adipocyte function. APCs have the capability to self-renew and undergo adipogenesis to propagate new adipocytes capable of lipid storage, which is important for maintaining a healthy fat pad, devoid of dysfunctional lipid …

The incidence of obesity has markedly increased globally over the last several decades and is believed to be associated with the easier availability of energy-dense foods, including high-fat foods. The reinforcing hedonic properties of high-fat foods, including olfactory cues, activate reward centers in the brain, motivating eating behavior. Thus, there is a growing interest in the understanding of the genetic changes that occur in the brain that are associated with obesity and eating behavior. This growing interest has paralleled advances in genomic methods that enable transcriptomic-wide analyses. Here, we examined the transcriptomic-level differences in the olfactory bulb and striatum, regions …

New Mothers Know Best? Second-Parent Choices At Birth, Jeffrey A. Parness
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Professor Jessica Feinberg recently observed that state laws governing the ability of an individual who gives birth (“gestating parent”) “to exercise meaningful choice within the determination of who is deemed the child’s second legal parent differ drastically depending on factors such as their marital status, the method of the child’s conception, and the gender of the desired second parent.” She found many of the differences “problematic,” having “no underlying theory that provides a consistent explanation for the law’s current approach.” Moreover, she urged “reform . . . to create a more coherent and just legal framework governing the degree of …

Timing risk refers to a situation in which the timing of an economically important event is unknown (risky) from the perspective of an economic decision maker. While this special class of dynamic stochastic control problems has many applications in economics, the methods used to solve them are not easily accessible within a single, comprehensive survey. We provide a survey of dynamic optimization methods under comprehensive assumptions about the nature of timing risk. We also relax the assumption of full information and summarize optimization with limited information, ambiguity, imperfect hedging, and dynamic inconsistency. Our goal is to provide a concise user …

As the most widespread large carnivore on the planet, domestic dogs Canis lupus familiaris can pose a major threat to wildlife, even within protected areas (PAs). Growing human presence in PAs, coupled with increasing pet dog ownership underscores the urgency to understand the influence of dogs on wildlife activity and health. This knowledge can mitigate the adverse repercussions of recreation, optimizing PA management. Drawing on five years (2017–2021) of data from 101 camera traps in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States, we measured the spatiotemporal responses of puma Puma concolor, bobcat Lynx rufus, coyote Canis latrans …
