Genome analysis of individuals affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) identified two rare nucleotide substitutions at the same genomic location on chromosome 11 (g.61392563 [GRCh38]), 69 base pairs upstream of the start codon of the ciliopathy gene TMEM216 (c.-69G>A, c.-69G>T [GenBank: NM_001173991.3]), in individuals of South Asian and African ancestry, respectively. Genotypes included 71 homozygotes and 3 mixed heterozygotes in trans with a predicted loss-of-function allele. Haplotype analysis showed single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) common across families, suggesting ancestral alleles within the two distinct ethnic populations. Clinical phenotype analysis of 62 available individuals from 49 families indicated a similar clinical presentation …

Improving Ligand Pharmacokinetics Via Bioisosteric Substitution Of Amides With 1, 2, 3-Triazoles While Maintaining Dopamine D4 Receptor Selectivity And Potency, Mohammad Alkhatib
Theses and Dissertations
Several neurophysiological functions, such as attention, cognition, and emotional regulation, are regulated by the binding of dopamine on G-Protein coupled receptors. D4Rs are mainly located in the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus and are known to have a key role in decision-making, memory formation, cognition, and attention. Administration of D4Rs- selective ligands during the preclinical studies enhance the outcomes and the results in animal models suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders, including ADHD, substance use disorders (SUD), and Alzheimer's disease. Recently, we reported a group of D4R-selective ligands with different efficacies depending on their phenylpiperazine ring scaffold to illustrate D4R function during …

Lymphedema evaluation entails multifaceted considerations for which options continue to evolve and emerge. This paper provides a critical review of the current status of diagnostic and quantitative measures for lymphedema, from traditional and novel bedside assessment tools for volumetric and fluid assessment, to advanced imaging modalities. Modalities are contrasted with regard to empirical support and feasibility of clinical implementation. The manuscript proposes a grid framework for comparing the ability of each modality to quantify specific lymphedema characteristics, including distribution, dysmorphism, tissue composition and fluid content, lymphatic anatomy and function, metaplasia, clinical symptoms, and quality of life and function. This review …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
"In this perspective piece, we propose a novel mechanistic framework for peripartum depression in which improved interoceptive functioning in pregnancy and postpartum typically protects against depressive symptoms, but when there is a failure to improve interoception, the result is an inability to maintain metabolic efficiency, which ultimately poses risk for depression. First, we will review an emerging theory that links the modeling and predictive regulation of metabolic resources as central to the expression of many depressive symptoms. Then, focusing on the period of pregnancy to articulate the framework, we will discuss the physiological changes induced by pregnancy that place an …

Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and data analysis was performed by coding keywords, phrases, and methods. The following …
Homeless Individuals’ Experiences Of Access To Personal Hygiene And Sanitary Products And Processes During Menstruation, Chele Taylor-Jennifer
Homeless Individuals’ Experiences Of Access To Personal Hygiene And Sanitary Products And Processes During Menstruation, Chele Taylor-Jennifer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness and period (menstruation) poverty are recurring global phenomena. In the United States, approximately 220,000 women experience homelessness annually. Studies have shown that approximately 35% of individuals who menstruate experience period poverty while living in Baltimore, Maryland. The theoretical foundation was Wollstonecraft‘s theory of feminism. To better understand this phenomenon, a general qualitative study was conducted using semistructured interviews with 18 people who were once homeless while menstruating. Through data collection and analysis, five themes emerged: (a) women have had to find creative ways of addressing menstruation; (b) women have had to find creative ways of addressing the personal hygiene …

Clinical Social Workers, Telemental Health And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juli Chaffee
Dissertations
As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and due to the shelter in place order that most states required, licensed clinical social workers (CSW’s) were forced to switch from in person services to telemental health services almost overnight. Many did so without previous training, adequate technology, a confidential office, or professional support. While there is a growing body of research regarding the increased use of telemental health in the mental health field during COVID-19, there is minimal research which narrows in what it was like for the CSW’s who made this transition. The purpose of this study was to better …
Impacts Of Stormwater And Land Cover On The Abundance, Transport, And Composition Of Anthropogenic Litter In Urban Watersheds, Bailey Austin Schwenk
Impacts Of Stormwater And Land Cover On The Abundance, Transport, And Composition Of Anthropogenic Litter In Urban Watersheds, Bailey Austin Schwenk
Master's Theses
Anthropogenic litter (AL; trash) is defined as any manufactured item that ends up in the environment. AL consists of many different materials including glass, metal, and plastic, the latter of which typically represents a dominant constituent and has been a major focus of research. Plastic litter and other AL types are pervasive to all types of ecosystems, are persistent in the environment, and are increasing. Rivers are a major conduit transporting AL to oceans. However, rivers also retain and transform AL. More research is needed to understand AL dynamics within rivers, which will improve global models of AL movement and …
Pattern, Process And The Evolution Of Sexual Dimorphism In Three-Spine Stickleback Fish Gasterosteus Aculeatus From Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Katie Van Dame
Master's Theses
Males and females of a species often differ from one another in phenotype—a phenomenon known as sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism is most often attributed to sexual selection. However, sexual dimorphism also derives from natural selection when resource competition generates disruptive selection favoring specialization on different resources, resulting in niche partitioning and the evolution of dimorphism in traits related to competition. Sexual dimorphism may be an important route to increased individual fitness (i.e., more resources, more survival). For example, ecologically driven divergent selection between sexes may derive from differences in their environments, resulting in the evolution of dimorphism in traits related …

Lysine-specific histone demethylase 1 (LSD1), which demethylates mono- or di- methylated histone H3 on lysine 4 (H3K4me1/2), is essential for early embryogenesis and development. Here we show that LSD1 is dispensable for mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) self-renewal but is required for mouse ESC growth and differentiation. Reintroduction of a catalytically-impaired LSD1 (LSD1MUT) recovers the proliferation capability of mouse ESCs, yet the enzymatic activity of LSD1 is essential to ensure proper differentiation. Indeed, increased H3K4me1 in Lsd1 knockout (KO) mouse ESCs does not lead to major changes in global gene expression programs related to stemness. However, ablation of LSD1 but …

Applying Transfer Learning And Existing Eeg Datasets To Identify Patients With Als, Nibhrat Lohia, Chris Mathew, Garrett Shankel
SMU Data Science Review
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have helped medical practitioners re-design the diagnosis of electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, resulting in a level of accuracy and efficiency that matches or exceeds experts in the field. This study aims to explore the application of VGG19, an algorithm based on CNN architecture, to diagnose small subsets of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that reduces the nervous system’s ability to control the muscles of the body. Since EEG recordings are scarce for ALS, this study will use a larger collection of EEG recordings taken on patients with more common neurological diseases, including but …

Rethinking Retrieval Augmented Fine-Tuning In An Evolving Llm Landscape, Nicholas Sager, Timothy Cabaza, Matthew Cusack, Ryan Bass, Joaquin Dominguez
SMU Data Science Review
This study explores the utilization of Retrieval Augmented Fine-Tuning (RAFT) to enhance the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in domain-specific Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) tasks. By integrating domain-specific information during the retrieval process, RAG aims to reduce hallucination and improve the accuracy of LLM outputs. We investigate the use of RAFT, an approach that enhances LLMs by incorporating domain-specific knowledge and effectively handling distractor documents. This paper validates previous work, which found that RAFT can considerably improve the performance of Llama2-7B in specific domains. We also expand upon previous work into new state-of-the-art open-source models and other datasets with …

Framing Iowa’S “Fragile Giants”, Blake L. Mayberry
The Geographical Bulletin
The cultural landscape of Iowa has changed significantly in the last thirty years, coincident with larger changes in the national and global economies . The Loess Hills–a geologic landform consisting of eroded 15,000-yearold deposits of eolian glacial silt spanning seven counties in western Iowa–have become a political and discursive battle ground for postindustrial restructuring . The State of Iowa sought to create a tourism- and recreationbased economy for western Iowa as a response to rural population loss and unemployment . In 1997, the state’s largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, started an editorial campaign to advocate for a national park …

Reconstructing Canopy Disturbance History And Recruitment Patterns To Inform Management Decisions At The Lost 40 In The Chippewa National Forest, Northern Minnesota, Julia Rauchfuss, Susy Svatek Ziegler
The Geographical Bulletin
Old-growth eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) and red pine (Pinus resinosa) dominate the forest canopy but not the understory of the Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area in northern Minnesota . Our objectives were to (1) analyze stand structure and species composition, (2) examine the tree-ring record to determine the frequency and magnitude of canopy disturbances, (3) characterize recruitment patterns to provide information for a science-based management plan, and (4) compare the canopy-disturbance history of the Lost 40 to the average decadal rate of disturbance in similar forests . Average canopy disturbance from 1880–1999 was 2 .6–8 .2 percent per …
