The Effects Of School-Based Menstruation Education Programs On Anxiety And Self-Efficacy In Adolescent Girls: A Systematic Review, Hannah C. Hart
The Effects Of School-Based Menstruation Education Programs On Anxiety And Self-Efficacy In Adolescent Girls: A Systematic Review, Hannah C. Hart
Honors Undergraduate Theses
A significant global knowledge gap exists for adolescent girls regarding what constitutes a healthy menstrual cycle, proper menstrual hygiene practices, and the implications of reproductive maturity that is ushered in by menarche. This limited understanding can lead to poor health outcomes and the development of negative sentiments and beliefs surrounding the normal experience of menstruation.
This systematic review aims to comprehensively investigate the current state of research regarding the effects of school-based, formal menstruation education programs on adolescent girls, particularly the effects on anxiety and self-efficacy related to the management of menstruation. Furthermore, this work aims to take a stance …

Partisan Divides In Environmental Spending Attitudes: A Two-Level Hierarchical Analysis, 1973-2022, Jordan Lipner
Partisan Divides In Environmental Spending Attitudes: A Two-Level Hierarchical Analysis, 1973-2022, Jordan Lipner
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Public attitudes toward environmental spending have become increasingly divided along party lines, with sharp shifts over the past five decades. This thesis updates and expands on Johnson and Schwadel’s 2019 study by applying a two-level hierarchical linear model to General Social Survey data updated to include data from 2015-2022, capturing how political affiliation, education, race, and economic context interact with broader political and economic contexts to shape environmental attitudes over time.
The results show that political affiliation remains the strongest and most reactive predictor of environmental spending attitudes. Republican respondents are significantly more likely to oppose environmental spending, especially under …
A Tail Of Two Fishes: Exploring Population Structure In Two Species Of Fishes Across The Galápagos Islands, Hillary Quach
A Tail Of Two Fishes: Exploring Population Structure In Two Species Of Fishes Across The Galápagos Islands, Hillary Quach
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The Galápagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot with high levels of endemism, is home to over 440 species of fishes. Marine conditions across the Archipelago are greatly influenced by ocean currents in the region. The Pacific Equatorial Undercurrent, South Equatorial Current, and the Humboldt Current deliver waters rich in nutrients across the three major regions within the Galápagos (central, north, and west). These conditions create a dynamic environment close to the equator, enabling diverse species to thrive in distinct parts of the Galápagos. Despite the rich biodiversity in the region and diverse oceanographic conditions, there …
“Some Small Kiss From Your Sweet Lips”: Navigating Hierarchy In Eastern Roman Letters, Nicholas Elijah Raffington
“Some Small Kiss From Your Sweet Lips”: Navigating Hierarchy In Eastern Roman Letters, Nicholas Elijah Raffington
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The presence of homoeroticism in the letters of elite Byzantine men was both the product of long-term literary developments and was employed for many purposes. As a medieval society which saw a unique level of social mobility, an individual’s connections and how they managed and negotiated them within the competitive elite milieu was of utmost importance to their relevance. Letters naturally emerge as a suitable literary genre to affirm and recognize relationships, to ask for favors, or introduce a new member to the group. As the evidence suggests, homoeroticism was employed within the male-centered world of business and politics as …
Genomic Epidemiology Of Staphylococcus Aureus Sequence-Type 72, Sachitaa Senthilkumar
Genomic Epidemiology Of Staphylococcus Aureus Sequence-Type 72, Sachitaa Senthilkumar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, SA) is a gram-positive bacterial colonizer and pathogen commonly carried on the skin and in the anterior nares of humans. SA colonization may lead to a variety of non-invasive (e.g., skin and soft tissue infections, SSTIs) and invasive (e.g., bacteremia and osteomyelitis) infections. The SA population is comprised of multiple lineages that can be delineated through multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), which compares nucleotide sequences within seven housekeeping genes. Strains belonging to an MLST share a common evolutionary history and phenotypic characteristics like antibiotic resistance or virulence. As a result, the epidemiology of lineages can be …
Effects Of Changes In Strouhal And Reynolds Numbers On Beetle Wing Aerodynamics, Keith L. Thiha
Effects Of Changes In Strouhal And Reynolds Numbers On Beetle Wing Aerodynamics, Keith L. Thiha
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Insect flight has long been a subject of interest across the scientific community, largely due to the exceptional aerodynamic performance insects demonstrate relative to their size. Insects tend to have very high aerodynamic performance characteristics like thrust and lift generation compared to their size. This has many potential applications in improving aircraft performance, however the flow phenomena concerning insect wing aerodynamics is still an area of ongoing research. This study aims to investigate how variations in key nondimensional flow parameters—specifically the Reynolds number and Strouhal number—affect the aerodynamic performance of beetle wings. Strouhal numbers ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 were …
High-Throughput Drug Screening For Disease-Modifying Arthritis Therapy, Janapriya Vijayakumar
High-Throughput Drug Screening For Disease-Modifying Arthritis Therapy, Janapriya Vijayakumar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Current therapy for arthritis predominantly focuses on the symptoms rather than the underlying causes of disease progression. Thus, it is necessary to identify novel drugs which target the underlying molecular basis of such diseases. Using high-throughput cell-based drug screening, we screened 458 different compounds, narrowed down from 811 starting compounds from the NIH Mechanistic Set. We selected drugs from the Mechanistic Set following Lipinski's Rule of 5 to ensure optimal pharmacokinetic properties. The study used modified primary human chondrocytes (IIAM-PRG4Luc), which secrete a lubricin promoter-driven luciferase reporter. We use this luciferase expression as a proxy to measure lubricin, a compound …
Investigation Of Lubricin-Stimulating Fda-Approved Compounds For A Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritic Drug, Swathi S. Menon
Investigation Of Lubricin-Stimulating Fda-Approved Compounds For A Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritic Drug, Swathi S. Menon
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that affects many people worldwide. Current methods of treatment are palliative, and no treatment exists to fully reverse or cure OA once it begins to progress. The discovery of a disease-modifying osteoarthritic drug (DMOAD) would increase the quality of life for millions and reduce the need for invasive procedures. Screening FDA-approved drugs ensures more promise due to their known safety profile and potential for faster translation to the clinic. The goal of this project was to conduct dose-response assays with FDA-approved drugs that have been shown to stimulate lubricin production in cells that mimic …
Active Musical Engagement Versus Passive Music Listening: Effects On Emotional Modulation, Claudia Allocca
Active Musical Engagement Versus Passive Music Listening: Effects On Emotional Modulation, Claudia Allocca
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study explored how different forms of musical engagement, actively playing versus
passively listening, impact emotional regulation following exposure to a stressor. The goal was
to better understand whether active participation in music offers greater emotional benefits
compared to simply listening, as previous research often highlights music’s role in emotional
modulation but overlooks the influence of performance-based engagement. A total of 28
participants either played music or listened to music and then completed both pre- and post-
stressor measures assessing mood, mental task load, and heart rate. Contrary to the original
hypothesis, findings revealed that participants from the listening group …
Development Of A Proposed Selective Medium For The Isolation And Differentiation Of P. Sordellii, Dimyana Bottros
Development Of A Proposed Selective Medium For The Isolation And Differentiation Of P. Sordellii, Dimyana Bottros
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Clostridium, a genus of anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria, includes clinically and ecologically significant species like Clostridium difficile and Paeniclostridium sordellii. C. difficile causes antibiotic-associated colitis, while P. sordellii is linked to fatal infections and spontaneous abortions. Recent studies found both species in marine sediments, suggesting their role in environmental and wildlife health disturbances, including the 2013 mass mortality of over 300 manatees in the Indian River Lagoon. However, isolating and differentiating P. sordellii is challenging due to the lack of selective media optimized for its growth. This thesis proposes a novel selective medium tailored to P. sordellii’s physiological …
Allele-Specific Pcr (As-Pcr) Assays For Genetic Variants Associated With Color Morphs In Ball Pythons (Python Regius), Uyen Dao
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
While the genetic basis of color morphs in ball pythons (Python regius) has become increasingly studied, rapid and accessible tools for genotyping these known mutations are still limited. Here, we developed allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) assays for detecting genetic mutations associated with ten diUerent P. regius color morphs, providing a rapid and coste Uective genotyping tool. We first tested each color morph with diUerent combinations of AS-PCR primers to determine the optimal ones. Then, we performed AS-PCR again with a larger sample set after identifying optimal primers and amplification conditions specific to each morph-associated genetic variant. These AS-PCR assays distinguished wild-type …

“Regression To The Mean”: The Confluence Of Eugenics And Statistics In The 19th And 20th Centuries, Emrys G. King
“Regression To The Mean”: The Confluence Of Eugenics And Statistics In The 19th And 20th Centuries, Emrys G. King
Pomona Senior Theses
The work of this thesis is twofold — first, qualitatively characterizing the confluence between the British eugenics and statistics movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and second, quantitatively analyzing the effect of this foundation on pedagogical materials in the growing field of statistics between 1880 and 1970. Towards the first goal, the history of the method of least squares, state statistics, and positive and negative eugenics are outlined, followed by a close reading of the foundational texts authored by Francis Galton and Karl Pearson that introduced linear regression. Towards the latter goal, English-language statistics textbooks published between …
From Feedlot To Floor Vote: How Animal Agribusiness Wields Power To Capture The American State, Hannah Hughes
From Feedlot To Floor Vote: How Animal Agribusiness Wields Power To Capture The American State, Hannah Hughes
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis examines how large-scale animal agriculture operations exercise disproportionate political influence to shape regulatory policy in their favor, often at the expense of environmental protection and public health. Through analysis of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), this study demonstrates how the animal agribusiness industry has systematically captured regulatory processes at federal, state, and local levels. The research traces industrial animal agriculture's development in the 21st century and its environmental consequences. The analysis reveals significant gaps in federal oversight, examining how the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act have proven inadequate in regulating CAFO operations. At the state level, …
Biomechanics Of The Atherosclerotic Lipidome: (Un)Expected Statin Interactions And Membrane Remodelling, Ethan M. Fong
Biomechanics Of The Atherosclerotic Lipidome: (Un)Expected Statin Interactions And Membrane Remodelling, Ethan M. Fong
Pomona Senior Theses
Statins interact with lipid membranes in ways that shape their pharmacokinetics, off-target effects, and pleiotropic actions, yet these interactions' mechanical and biophysical consequences remain poorly understood. This thesis employs a combination of surface plasmon resonance (SPR), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and rheological modelling to characterize how representative statins intercalate within biomimetic supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) of healthy and diseased composition. SPR reveals that lipophilic statins exhibit higher apparent affinities and slower dissociation kinetics, especially in cholesterol- and anionic lipid-rich membranes. QCM-D analyses demonstrate that statins alter membrane mass, dissipation, and interfacial stiffness in a statin- and membrane-dependent …
The Serendipity Of Discovery: Life Of A Geochemist, Willard S. Moore
The Serendipity Of Discovery: Life Of A Geochemist, Willard S. Moore
Faculty Publications
My strategy for writing this autobiography is to use examples of how working on seemingly different projects can often lead to outcomes more important than originally envisioned. Serendipity is a "happy accident"; specifically, the accident of discovering something useful without directly looking for it. This often occurs when two research projects converge unexpectedly. The main text contains examples of how serendipity has led me to important discoveries including: (a) finding surprisingly high 228Ra activities in the ocean, (b) developing a means of rapidly and quantitatively extracting radium from seawater, (c) devising a rapid, sensitive method of measuring 224Ra …
Development Of A Scituate Reservoir Mitigation Model For Assessing Flood Control During Extreme Scenarios, Supria Paul
Development Of A Scituate Reservoir Mitigation Model For Assessing Flood Control During Extreme Scenarios, Supria Paul
Open Access Dissertations
Effective reservoir management is essential for mitigating downstream flooding, especially with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events impacting major drinking water reservoirs such as the Scituate Reservoir in Rhode Island. These reservoirs provide water for large populations but can be overwhelmed by intense precipitation, flooding and land cover changes. Climate change is expected to increase precipitation in the study area located in New England, highlighting the need for improved reservoir systems, especially given the aging dams and higher risk of failures. Additionally, land cover changes, like the widespread defoliation caused by the Gypsy Moth infestations, affect water …
Light, Symbiosis, And The Biology Of Corals, Taylor R. Lindsay
Light, Symbiosis, And The Biology Of Corals, Taylor R. Lindsay
Open Access Dissertations
Light is critical for the survival of most shallow water scleractinian corals. Corals are mixotrophs, acquiring energy via both feeding on water column plankton and photosynthesis via a symbiotic relationship with dinoflagellates living within their tissues. Corals rely heavily on photosynthetically derived metabolites through this symbiotic relationship, intrinsically linking their biology to light availability. Corals are known to modulate their biology to maximize light capture. However, there is a limited understanding of the interaction between morphology, physiology, and energetic strategy, as well as how light may affect these relationships. In Chapter 1, we quantified the morphology, physiology and energetic …

Assessing Distribution And Density Changes Of The Ecosystem Engineers, Rockweed And Kelp, In Narragansett Bay, Ri, Rebecca Venezia
Open Access Dissertations
Climate change and anthropogenic stressors in marine costal habitats include increased sea surface temperatures (SST) and precipitation. The impacts of these stressors can affect ecosystem engineer species, which create three-dimensional habitat space in and provide various ecosystem services that modify and maintain ecosystem resources. In Narragansett Bay, RI, USA there is anecdotal evidence that the habitat forming species of kelp, Saccharina latissima, and rockweeds, Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus spp, are changing but few long-term studies have been conducted to verify this. We compared the historical studies from the 1960s to 2010s on seaweeds in Narraganset Bay to modern SCUBA …

In Manuscript 1, we study the Beverton-Holt population models with constant and proportional stocking and harvesting, as well as sigmoid Beverton-Holt models under constant stocking and harvesting, both in autonomous and non-autonomous settings. We analyze stability and explore global dynamics using established local and global dynamics theorems, bifurcation theory, and explicit solutions when available. Special attention is given to …
Coral Vision – Crustose Coralline Algae Detection With Computer Vision, Ryan Tseng
Coral Vision – Crustose Coralline Algae Detection With Computer Vision, Ryan Tseng
Master's Projects
Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a group of red algae that are vital contributors to the health of coral reef ecosystems. Monitoring CCA abundance can serve as an indicator for coral reef health and improve reef conservation efforts. Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) are artificial structures that can be deployed into coral reef ecosystems and retrieved to gather ecological data without harming reef structures. Traditional methods of calculating CCA abundance require manual analysis and are labor-intensive. Recent developments in computer vision and deep learning technology have provided an avenue to fully automate this task. This research aims to train a …
Impacts Of Multiple Coastal Stressors Across Life-History Stages In The Eastern Oyster, Amaelia Zyck
Impacts Of Multiple Coastal Stressors Across Life-History Stages In The Eastern Oyster, Amaelia Zyck
Open Access Dissertations
Urbanized estuaries are characterized as a complex of biotic and abiotic stressors, which currently challenge marine life and are expected to intensify and become increasingly unpredictable under the ongoing impacts of climate change. The persistence of coastal species that inhabit these stressful environments will ultimately depend on their ability to adapt. Many of these species have complex life cycles, featuring distinct morphological and physiological developmental stages that can exhibit unique responses to environmental pressures. However, since all stages share the same genome, selective pressures acting on one stage can have cascading effects throughout the life cycle. The larval stage, being …

The latest edition of Global Cancer Statistics released by the American Cancer Society reported approximately 20 million newly diagnosed cancer cases worldwide in 2022 with 9.7 million deaths. This ranks cancer as the second leading cause of death worldwide. For the majority of cancer patients, the standard treatment approach is chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, and while this has been successful in some patients, a lack of specificity to cancer cells causes severe side-effects when these agents damage healthy cells. Despite extensive efforts that have gone into developing targeted cancer therapeutics that block functions specific to cancer, they have not been …

The Chemical Ecology Of A Caribbean Boulder Coral During Restoration And The Interplay Between Fish Predation And Microbiome Variation, Catherine E. Raker
Open Access Dissertations
Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. In recent decades, however, climate change and other global threats have caused severe declines in live coral cover worldwide. Coral propagation, or “gardening,” is a popular strategy to attempt to restore healthy corals to degraded reefs. Slow-growing boulder corals are often restored using microfragmentation, where cutting coral colonies into roughly 1 cm2 fragments can increase their growth rates up to 5x. However, extreme early mortality of fragments has been observed in the field, which has been at least partially attributed to predation. It has been …
