Detection Of Tetrahydrozoline In Alcoholic Beverage Residue Related To Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Using Gc-Ms, Alyssa Simone Hampton
All ETDs from UAB
Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) is an ongoing issue that remains significant in the United States and the World. DFSA can be either proactive or opportunistic, where a victim becomes impaired and is unable to provide consent. Common drugs found in DFSA cases are ethanol and cannabis. However, alternative drugs are increasingly being used to incapacitate a victim and enable a sexual assault. These include tetrahydrozoline (THZ), commonly found in over-the-counter eye drops, such as Visine®. Minimal research surrounds THZ, in which agencies may process case samples with a general drug screen, which may only detect common drugs, while THZ goes …

A kidney transplant is the most common form of organ transplant in the United States. The waitlist of patients waiting for a kidney transplant totals over 80,000. In recent years, kidney transplants have been performed more than ever before, but the waitlist continues to grow. This is due to the constant addition of new patients being added, as well as, patients who obtained a kidney transplant, but their transplant failed and were added back to the waitlist. While the development of more specific and effective immunosuppressive drugs given to transplant recipients have reduced the cases of acute rejection, it has …

An Examination Of Psycho-Behavioral Risk And Resilence Profiles In People With Chronically Painful Knee Osteoarthritis, Daniel Kusko
All ETDs from UAB
The prevalence and impact of chronic pain are far-reaching and costly to our society. Chronic pain conditions are affecting many people in the US and abroad. Osteoarthritis (OA) is commonly referred to as a slow progressing degenerative disease that tends to develop over 10 to 15 years and can result in functional limitations and pain. Chronic knee OA is a common form of OA pain that affects many adults across the globe. Biopsychosocial factors are theorized to play an important role in how people with chronic pain may develop, exacerbate, or cope with pain. The goal of this project was …
Guts, Glory, And Gain: Exploring The Multifaceted Influences Of Physical Activity Behavior Among Adults With Crohn's Disease, Whitney Neal
Guts, Glory, And Gain: Exploring The Multifaceted Influences Of Physical Activity Behavior Among Adults With Crohn's Disease, Whitney Neal
All ETDs from UAB
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, affecting approximately 1 million individuals in the United States. In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, complications such as arthralgia, sacroiliitis, and osteopenia may diminish physical fitness and exacerbate disease burden. Physical activity is a promising complementary, non-invasive strategy for managing Crohn’s disease, yet few studies have examined outcomes across the entire activity continuum from sedentary behavior to vigorous exercise. This study sought to provide a nuanced understanding of activity patterns in adults with Crohn’s disease (n=47) by comparing them with age-, socioeconomic status-, and sex-matched healthy controls (n=45), exploring Social …

INTRODUCTION: Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors, commonly prescribed for erectile dysfunction, may exhibit immunomodulatory properties by reducing myeloid-derived suppressor cell activity and enhancing T-cell responses. This study evaluated the association between PDE5 inhibitor use and overall survival (OS) in male-predominant solid organ malignancies.
METHODS: Male-predominant solid tumors were identified using male-to-female incidence ratio ≥3:1 in SEER database: prostate, bladder, colon, esophageal, hypopharyngeal, laryngeal, tonsillar, and testicular cancers. Using the TriNetX Research Network, we compared male patients prescribed PDE5 inhibitors within 6 months of cancer diagnosis to those without PDE5 exposure. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed on demographic, clinical, and oncologic variables. …

Broader Consequences Of 17Α-Methyltestosterone-Induced Masculinization In Betta Splendens: Toxicological, Behavioral, And Morphometric Outcomes, Imee Rose E. Felipe, Alexandra May R. Rosario, Vijay Hanz A. Tuason
Journal Article
The 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) is a synthetic androgen widely applied in aquaculture, particularly in fish species like Betta splendens, where males have higher commercial value. While MT is effective for sex reversal, the broader physiological and behavioral consequences of MT exposure remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated toxicological, behavioral, and morphometric endpoints in B. splendens to provide an integrated assessment of the impacts of MT exposure. Immersion assays in fry (2 days post- hatch, dph) demonstrated clear dose- and exposure-dependent toxicity, with cumulative toxicity under continuous 48 h immersion while greater tolerance under discrete immersion (two 3 h immersion at 2 …

Isolation And Identification Of Lactic Acid Bacteria From Bee Body Parts Surviving High Temperature Exposure, Sean Derrick M. Oliquiano, Noel G. Sabino, Renard M. Zamora
Journal Article
Temperature stress can influence the composition and stability of microbial communities associated with bees; however, some lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains demonstrate tolerance to such environmental stresses, allowing them to persist and remain functionally active under challenging conditions. This study aimed to isolate and identify LAB associated with honeybees that are capable of surviving exposure to high temperatures. A total of 196 bee samples were processed under unheated and heat-treated conditions (80 °C for 10 min) to selectively recover thermotolerant bacteria. Cultivation on Yeast Glucose Starch Agar supplemented with nalidixic and pipemidic acid favored the growth of LAB under oxygen-limited …

Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Bacterial Contaminants In Tissue-Cultured Musa Acuminata ‘Lakatan’ And Musa Textilis ‘Inosa’, Brendell Philip B. Tejoso, Lourna Mae Q. David, Emmanuel L. Bernardo, Carlo Miguel C. Sandoval, Renard M. Jamora
Journal Article
Banana (Musa acuminata) and abaca (Musa textilis) are economically important crops in the Philippines. However, both crops are increasingly threatened by disease outbreaks, which can be mitigated through mass propagation using tissue culture techniques. Tissue culture propagation, however, is often compromised by bacterial contamination originating from either environmental or endophytic sources. In this study, bacterial isolates from environmental surfaces and tissue-cultured explants were characterized using morphological and biochemical profiling. Environmental isolates consisted of Gram-positive and Gram-negative short rods, whereas tissue culture contaminants were predominantly Gram-negative short rods and a single Gram- positive coccus. This morphological distinction suggests that the tissue …
Development Of Holographic Optical Elements For Application In Wound Healing Monitoring, Pamela Stoeva
Development Of Holographic Optical Elements For Application In Wound Healing Monitoring, Pamela Stoeva
Doctoral
Growing global healthcare challenges, including the increasing prevalence of chronic wounds, necessitate the development of cost-effective, reusable, and readily accessible sensors for real-time wound monitoring. Such devices could extend basic healthcare to remote areas and support long-term space missions by facilitating on-the-spot wound assessment. Sensors that utilise Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) are promising candidates due to their diverse sensing capabilities, advantageous physical properties (e.g., lightweight and flexibility), and suitability for mass manufacturing. The fundamental biochemical processes associated with wound healing are typically related to parameters such as oxygen levels, pH, temperature, and lactate concentration. Realtime quantification of these parameters enables …

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications
Objective
To use superb microvascular imaging (SMI) to longitudinally evaluate blood flow in intravillous arterioles (IVA) in pregnancy, and to develop reference ranges for IVA pulsatility index (PI) and peak systolic velocity (PSV) from 12 to 38 weeks' gestation.
Methods
The data for this study were obtained from the National Institutes of Health-funded Human Placenta Project. Eligible for inclusion were women aged 18-35 years, with a body mass index of < 30 kg/m², without comorbidities, with a singleton pregnancy conceived spontaneously and a gestational age of ≤ 13 + 6 weeks. Exclusion criteria were maternal or neonatal complications, fetal or umbilical cord anomalies, abnormal placental implantation and delivery < 37 weeks. Each participant underwent eight ultrasound examinations during pregnancy. Using SMI technology, the total number of IVA identified was recorded in a sagittal placental section at the level of cord insertion. The PI and PSV were measured in a total of six IVA (two in the central portion of the placenta, two peripherally towards the uterine fundal portion and two peripherally towards the lower uterine segment). Umbilical artery (UA)-PI was also obtained. Multilevel regression models were used to create reference ranges for IVA-PI and IVA-PSV at 12-38 weeks' gestation.
Results
A total of 90 women fulfilled the study criteria. IVA-PI decreased throughout pregnancy from a mean ± SD of 1.04 ± 0.23 in the first trimester (at 12-13 weeks) …

American Heart Association Blood Pressure Classification And Subsequent Risk Of Preeclampsia, Rebecca Horgan, Erkan Kalafat, Elena Sinkovskaya, Alfred Abuhamad, George Saade
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications
Background: In 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology updated their hypertension guidelines for the nonpregnant population, lowering the diagnostic thresholds to systolic blood pressure ≥130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mmHg. This reclassification has raised important questions regarding whether blood pressure (BP) values previously considered within the normal range in pregnancy may, in fact, confer an increased risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs).
Objective: To evaluate the association between first-trimester BP classified by AHA thresholds and the subsequent development of HDPs.
Study design: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective, multicenter cohort …
Investigation Of Rna-Binding Protein Expression Changes In The Hippocampus Following Doxorubicin And Cyclophosphamide Treatment, Lijie Chen
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) following doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide treatment in a rat model, revealing three significant alterations in hippocampal tissue: selective downregulation of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNPA1) (21% decrease, p=0.0298), compromised astrocytic network integrity evidenced by reduced GFAP-positive area in cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) (24%, pB=0.026) and dentate gyrus (DG) (19%, pB=0.027) regions, and elevated cellular senescence marker p19Arf specifically in DG (69%, pB=0.033) and CA3 (27%, pB=0.024). The inverse relationship between hnRNPA1 reduction and p19Arf elevation suggests a potential mechanistic link between RNA dysregulation and senescence induction, with pronounced vulnerability in …
Toxin-Like Proteins In The Venom Of Drosophila Parasitoids, Lady V. Cardenas
Toxin-Like Proteins In The Venom Of Drosophila Parasitoids, Lady V. Cardenas
Dissertations and Theses
The figitid parasitoid wasps of Drosophila are gaining importance in agriculture due to their ability to kill the resilient soft-fruit pest Drosophila suzukii. Their success and infection strategies vary, and the mechanisms underlying these differences are largely unknown. Some of their venom proteins have been shown to be important in suppressing host defense. Here, we report that Ganaspis brasiliensis, a parasitoid of D. suzukii survives well on Drosophila yakuba, a host species with a strong cellular immunity, and infected flies are unable to mount a strong immune response. To predict possible toxin-like proteins in Ganaspis venoms that might suppress cellular …

Pathogens And Parasites Of Feral And Managed Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera, Colonies From Oklahoma, Allen Szalanski
Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Managed honey bee populations in the United States have been under stress over the past several decades, probably due to the interaction among multiple biotic and abiotic stressors. While most research has focused on national surveys of honey bee pathogens and parasites, state-specific studies that include both managed and feral honey bee populations may offer additional insights into the factors that contribute to the decline of honey bees. We conducted a survey to detect parasites and pathogens from feral and managed honey bees in colonies in Oklahoma. A total of 253 (89 managed and 164 feral) honey bees from these …

Genetic Variation Of Rice Stink Bugs, Oebalus Spp. (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) From Southeastern United States And Cuba, Allen Szalanski
Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The rice stink bug, Oebalus pugnax (F.; Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) has been a pest of rice in the United States since the 1880s. Besides this species, there now are two invasive Oebalus species, O. ypsilongriseus (De Geer) and O. insularis Stål, which are found in Florida. Genetic variation of these economically important species is unknown, limiting our understanding of Oebalus evolution and demography. Here we provide the first population-level investigation of genetic diversity in these species. Ninety two adult stink bugs were collected from the southeastern United States (Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida), and Cuba. A region of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase …

Radiomics-based machine learning models have the potential to detect lung cancer at inception from CT scans and transform patient outcomes. Low malignancy rates in early-development pulmonary nodules (PNs) and variable image acquisition hinder development of clinically applicable radiomics-based early detection models. To address these challenges, we augmented training using later-development PNs and harmonized for acquisition effects. We first trained machine learning models to predict PN malignancy using radiomic features from scans of early-development benign and malignant PNs (n = 187) harmonized using ComBat. Observing near-chance performance, we augmented training with later-development benign and malignant PNs (n = 225). We evaluated …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Florida Atlantic University has a skeletal teaching collection made up of nine disarticulated individuals. Like other anatomical skeletal collections housed in universities, FAU’s collection has unknown origins. With the current shift in bioarchaeology, it is important to take any steps necessary towards a more ethical practice and properly answer for the unethical practices that led to countless collections being obtained without consent. Keeping proper documentation should always have been a necessity, but moving forward, instructors can introduce curation taphonomy forms into their routine documentation. I drafted and tested these forms on five of the nine skeletal individuals in FAU’s collection …

Population Genetics Of Shallow And Mesophotic Corals And Sponges In The Gulf Of Mexico And Florida, Ryan J. Eckert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Population genetic analyses provide critical insights into biodiversity and resilience on coral reefs. This dissertation investigated the genetic connectivity and cryptic diversity of multiple foundational reef species, the corals Stephanocoenia intersepta, Orbicella faveolata, Montastraea cavernosa, and the sponge Xestospongia muta, across shallow and mesophotic reefs in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) and across marine protected areas on the Florida Reef Tract. Using a reduced representation genotyping approach, 2bRAD-seq, we generated genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) datasets for each species to assess patterns of population structure across regions and depth zones. Analyses uncovered cryptic lineages …

INTRODUCTION: Despite the rise in psychiatric disorders worldwide, the underlying brain circuits responsible for these devastating conditions remain elusive. The lateral habenula (LHb) has emerged as a key brain structure in depression studies due to its hyperactive state in both patients and animal models. While this aligns with known roles in driving aversive states and regulating serotonin release, it is still unclear how acute and transient activity changes in the LHb can influence higher order cognitive processes such as learning, memory, and behavioral adaptation. Given the importance of these processes to psychiatric conditions, understanding how LHb activity impacts cognitive function …

Motivation: Rare diseases remain difficult to diagnose due to limited patient data and genetic diversity, with many cases remaining undiagnosed despite advances in variant prioritization tools. While large language models have shown promise in medical applications, their optimal application for trustworthy and accurate gene prioritization downstream of modern prioritization tools has not been systematically evaluated.
Results: We benchmarked various language models for gene prioritization using multi-agent and Human Phenotype Ontology classification approaches to categorize patient cases by phenotype-based solvability levels. To address language model limitations in ranking large gene sets, we implemented a divide-and-conquer strategy with mini-batching and token limiting …

Mapless Autonomous Navigation Using Monocular Vision, Sai Digvijay Neelam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates monocular vision-based navigation for autonomous ground robots in indoor environments. It explores the effectiveness of mapless navigation strategies using image inputs and evaluates both modular and end-to-end deep learning techniques. A comprehensive implementation pipeline was developed on a Clearpath Dingo robot, comparing the approaches: classical optical flow (Farneback), modular deep learning with motion planning, and an end-to-end model.
The modular methods involve predicting region-wise obstacle depths using a ResNet 18 based model trained on a custom indoor dataset, followed by a motion planner. The end-to-end approach leverages a ResNet-18 architecture to jointly predict steering angles and collision …

Spot (Smart Position And Temperature) Tagging Reveals Environmental Factors That Shape Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus Limbatus) Annual Migrations., Isaac Tuszynski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) in the Western Atlantic migrate annually to spend the winter in waters off the coast of southeastern Florida. In the spring, these sharks migrate north to waters ranging as far north as Long Island, New York. This study was based on spatial data collected by SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature) tags deployed on blacktip sharks from 2017 to 2024. The data from the tags were used to investigate the offshore extent of the migration, the thermal preferences of these sharks, and which environmental variables can be used to predict their latitudinal distribution. Most blacktip detections were …

Introduction: Psychiatric (e.g., PTSD, alcohol use disorder) and physical issues (e.g., chronic pain, sleep problems) are robustly associated with the use of intimate partner violence (IPV). These chronic conditions can amplify the likelihood of IPV use by increasing perceived threat, poor relationship quality, and negative affect while simultaneously decreasing the ability to inhibit violent behavior. However, the research in this area has largely been examined in limited samples or by examining a single chronic condition above diagnostic cut-offs or specific dual diagnosis (e.g., PTSD and alcohol use disorder). Further, potential mechanisms of action such as impulse control difficulties are rarely …
Dynamic Quantile Positioning: A Visual Approach To Financial Ratio Benchmarking Against Industry Peers, Wojciech Kuryłek
Dynamic Quantile Positioning: A Visual Approach To Financial Ratio Benchmarking Against Industry Peers, Wojciech Kuryłek
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Purpose: This paper introduces an innovative visualization method for financial ratio benchmarking that enables comprehensive evaluation of a company’s financial performance relative to industry peers, addressing the challenge of information overload in financial analysis.
Design/methodology/approach: The method analyses data from nearly 200,000 Polish companies classified by PKD codes (aligned with NACE Rev. 2). It evaluates 14 financial ratios across five categories: sales characteristics, profitability, financial leverage, liquidity, and working capital. Each ratio is mapped against industry distributions divided into five quantiles ranging from ‘far below average’ to ‘far above average’. The visualization displays current and previous year positions …

Zooarchaeologists routinely analyze assemblages that were initially sorted into major animal type (birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates) by students or lab technicians with varied backgrounds in zooarchaeology. Sorting errors are probably made in this initial phase, which can affect taxonomic representation and understanding of human–animal relationships. Recent study of the immense faunal assemblage (over 1 million NSP [Number of Specimens]) from Čḯxwicən (45CA523), a 2,700-year-old Lower Elwha Klallam village located on the coast of Washington (USA), allows us to systematically analyze trends in sorting errors. For example, 22.6% of the bird bones included in our sample were initially missorted into other …
The Effect Of Huntington’S Disease On The Mechanical And Electrical Properties Of Red Blood Cells, Liliana Ponkratova
The Effect Of Huntington’S Disease On The Mechanical And Electrical Properties Of Red Blood Cells, Liliana Ponkratova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Huntington’s disease (HD) has an impact on brain tissues and can alter the biochemical properties of the peripheral blood. Evidence in existing literature suggests that peripheral mutant Huntingtin protein may be involved and deteriorate HD. Red blood cells (RBCs), being the most abundant type of cells in the peripheral blood, can show detectable changes in their biophysical properties due to subtle changes in cell membranes. These changes can offer a minimally invasive means to track the progression of the disease. The transgenic line R6/2 is used as the disease model. Utilizing the electro-deformation spectroscopy, we measured membrane permittivity, cytoplasm conductivity, …
