Immigration is a regular feature of American life; President Obama once described the U.S. as “a nation of immigrants.” Even as the host of more immigrants than any other nation, the American public has historically found immigration contentious. Since Congress has failed to agree on comprehensive immigration reform, this responsibility has moved to the executive and judicial branches of government. In 2016, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began working on the Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) Program, a new biometric information management system, to replace IDENT (Automated Biometric Identification System), DHS’s current biometrics database. Surrogacy Agencies In Canada: Intended Parents' Experiences, Stefanie Carsley

Canadian Journal of Family Law

This article sheds new light on intended parents’ experiences working with surrogacy agencies—businesses that match surrogates with prospective parents. These agencies contravene the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, a federal law that prohibits commercial surrogacy. Interviews with intended parents suggest that some agencies are taking advantage of surrogates and intended parents and lend support to calls to regulate agencies’ practices. This piece will interest scholars and lawmakers advocating for evidence-based law and policy responses to surrogacy in Canada. It broadens the frame relevant to addressing surrogacy beyond relations between surrogates, intended parents, and children to include a commercial sector.

The use of elective egg freezing (EEF) has rapidly increased in recent years. Despite its popularity, scholars have documented a host of concerns in relation to the use of this technology, especially given aggressive advertising of EEF by the fertility industry as “insurance” and lack of data about success rates. Informed consent processes, and informed consent materials, are particularly important in situations like EEF where healthy people are undergoing interventions that are neither life nor health preserving. Sorting Out Surrogacy: Three Considerations For Evidence-Informed Law Reform, Vanessa Gruben, Alana Cattapan

This article draws on novel survey research with surrogates in Canada—the Exploring Surrogates Experiences and Insights Survey—to examine three critical issues for potential law reform: (1) reimbursement and compensation (i.e., payment); (2) the work of surrogacy agencies; and (3) surrogacy arrangements involving foreign intended parents. Following a brief history of the regulation of surrogacy in Canada and a description of the survey’s methods, it explores each of these areas in turn, using the survey results to identify considerations for law reform. Introduction: Children growing up in arid and semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks, often resulting in poor developmental outcomes. In Kenya, the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) exhibit the lowest health and developmental indicators among children. Adolescents across the United States are struggling with their mental health in record numbers, often without access to adequate support. This paper examines the role of schools as critical access points for all students to receive mental health interventions. I propose the implementation of a school-wide, student-led mental health program that every student participates in during homeroom, with the additional support of a dedicated mental health space. This thesis shows how contemporary U.S. schooling reproduces domination and erodes freedom by examining education as a mechanism of social reproduction, disciplinary control, surveillance, and neoliberalization. I draw on Foucault, social reproduction theory, Freire, Vygotsky, and anarchist philosophy while using a critical action research lens to name the structural forces that condition obedience, normalize hierarchy, and individualize responsibility. In response, this thesis asks how anarchist pedagogy functions as an antithesis to these forces. Plastics have become a ubiquitous pollutant due to their increasing production worldwide. Current recycling infrastructure is inadequate, causing most plastics to end up in landfills or the environment, where they can take decades to break down and release additional pollutants in the process. To combat plastic pollution, nearly thirty municipalities in southeastern Pennsylvania have enacted single-use plastic (SUP) bans. We sampled anthropogenic litter from nine stream sites within municipalities with three different SUP ban statuses for seven sampling rounds roughly one month apart. Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is a behavioral pattern that consists of compensatory behaviors, such as dietary restriction and exercise, which are used in conjunction with alcohol consumption. Despite growing research on FAD, its relationship with descriptive social norms and gender differences remains underexplored, particularly in non-college adult populations. The present study examined the prevalence of FAD behaviors, their associations with descriptive norms, and potential gender differences in these relationships. This study aims to introduce a measurement tool into the literature that can reveal the factors affecting the joy of life in older adulthood. Participants included 266 individuals aged 55 and over living in Izmir, Turkey. The process of developing the scale includes the following stages: problem identification, item pool creation, expert opinion, form shaping, pilot application, and finalizing the scale. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the scale consists of 6 different dimensions, and the variance explained by these dimensions was found to be 65.184%. The role of mental health in athletes’ well-being and performance has been a popular and pervasive topic in recent years. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel CBT-based mental skills program for nineteen high school girls’ soccer players (M = 16.3; SD = 1.5). The evidence-based 8-session Coping with Stress course was adapted for athletes and delivered to one in-person and two virtual groups. As religious educators we must be aware of this priority, and we have a responsibility to create environments that generate greater gender equality in religious education classrooms. As part of reimagining America’s long-term care system, this article will explain how today’s system is, in many ways, the logical extension of historical presumptions that are foundational to our understanding of family, medical, and organizational governance as “fiduciary” in nature. More specifically, much of our current language (operating in someone’s “best interests,” acting consistent with their “substituted judgment” if now incapacitated) and jurisprudence (parens patriae, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and corporate governance) descends from centuries of equity and law centered on the management of property, not people or health.

The role of introduced Polynesian rats (Rattus exulans) in the deforestation of Rapa Nui remains a contentious issue. Several critics, including Mieth and Bork (2010), argue that rats played a negligible role compared to human impacts. We address the role of rats through three lines of evidence: (1) a response to rats-are-neglible arguments, including problematic continental analogies and misunderstandings of seed predation impacts; (2) analysis of rat remains from Anakena excavations (1986-2005) showing that rats decreased by 93% over time, contradicting claims they served as a “fallback food” following resource depletion; and (3) ecological modeling demonstrating that introduced …

Background: Despite efforts to increase recruitment and enrollment, the physical therapy profession lacks Black students and clinicians. Racially marginalized students have higher rates of academic difficulty during physical therapy education (PTE) than White students. Mental health and belongingness have been proposed as prerequisites for reaching academic achievement and attaining one’s full potential. Conversely, poor mental health and lack of belongingness during PTE may contribute to the underrepresentation of Black Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and clinicians.
