Microplastic Contamination In Commercially Important Bivalves Of Sorsogon Bay, Philippines, Sarina M.B. Arciga, Charmaine A. Malon, Kenneth N. Ballaran
Applied Environmental Research
Sorsogon Bay, a key fishing ground in the Philippines, is known for its commercially important bivalve species: Perna viridis, Atrina pectinata, and Paphia undulata. Despite their ecological and economic value, limited research has been conducted on microplastic contamination in bivalves harvested from this area. This study aimed to assess the abundance and types of microplastics in commercially important bivalves (P. viridis, A. pectinata, and P. undulata) from Sorsogon Bay, Philippines. Commercial bivalve samples were randomly collected, digested with 10% w/v potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, filtered (8 µm), and examined under a compound microscope. …

Applied Environmental Research
Hydrocarbonolastic bacteria are valuable for the remediation of petroleum-polluted environments. The production of biosurfactants by such bacteria significantly enhances hydrocarbon bioavailability and increases remediation efficiency. One genus of hydrocarbonolastic bacteria with the potential to produce biosurfactants is Bacillus, yet strain-level diversity and local adaptations remain underexplored.Tthis study aimed to isolate and characterize hydrocarbonolastic bacteria belonging to the Bacillus genus from soil samples collected at Geopetroleum Teksas Wonocolo, Kedewan District, Bojonegoro Regency, Indonesia, which is a historically underreported hydrocarbon site. Additionally, the capacity of Bacillus to synthesize biosurfactants was examined. Bacillus strains capable of biosur-factant production were identified via a polyphasic …
Examining Short Term Drainage Impacts To Soil Health In Hydric And Non-Hydric Soils Of Waseca County, Minnesota, Ely Hartl
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Subsurface drainage is implemented throughout the Midwest United States to remove excess moisture from soil to enhance crop growth. Hydric soils are ubiquitous throughout Minnesota and are commonly drained due to their historically saturated conditions. Changing a soil's hydrology can impact its formation and properties. The alteration of physical, biological, and chemical soil properties can occur to both hydric and non-hydric soils, impacting overall soil health. The purpose of this study is to examine the short-term effects of tile drainage on the soil health of hydric and non-hydric soils in southern Minnesota. Research methods include: 1) collect soil-sediment cores to …
Harmonizing Delegation And Deference After Loper Bright, Kristin Hickman, Amy J. Wildermuth
Harmonizing Delegation And Deference After Loper Bright, Kristin Hickman, Amy J. Wildermuth
Articles
By overturning Chevron, the Supreme Court's Loper Bright decision clearly changed the way in which courts must approach agency actions interpreting statutes. But Loper Bright stopped well short of declaring that courts should always ignore agency interpretations and only interpret statutes using their independent judgment. In two critical paragraphs, the Court acknowledged that some statutory provisions delegate discretionary authority to agencies counseled a more restrained judicial review for reasoned decisionmaking when agencies exercise such power. But, whereas Chevron focused nearly exclusively on the statutory word or phrase that an agency was endeavoring to interpret and implement, Loper Bright shifts …

Childhood Betrayal Trauma, Psychopathy, And Ptsd: The Role Of Ambiguity Tolerance, Distress Tolerance, And Impulse Control Difficulties In A College Sample., Surabhi Swaminath
Dissertations and Theses
Childhood betrayal trauma engenders negative outcomes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychopathy. Though these outcomes are viewed as functional opposites, this multi-finality suggests similar underlying mechanisms. Childhood betrayal trauma results in low tolerance for different types of distress, including emotional distress and ambiguity. Distress is known to induce impulse control difficulties, which are associated with both PTSD and psychopathy. This cross-sectional study tested hypothesized indirect associations between childhood betrayal trauma and two outcomes: PTSD symptoms and psychopathy in a sample of young adults (N¬ = 753). We hypothesized direct paths from childhood betrayal trauma to PTSD, and psychopathy. …

Hydrogen Peroxide Production From Light-Driven Water Oxidation Via Nickel Oxide-Titanium Dioxide Heteronanocrystals, Mahfuz Ahammed Swadhen
Dissertations and Theses
High dependence on fossil fuels for energy carries risks for the environment, health, energy, and geopolitical stability. One of the solutions to address this is solar energy utilization, and the use of semiconductors for photocatalytic water splitting is a tantalizing prospect. An n-type semiconductor TiO2 combined with p-type NiO producing a heteronanojunction shows effective light-driven oxidation of H2O into H2O2. We developed a synthetic method to attach NiO nanoparticles on the surface of anatase TiO2 nanorods. We characterized the materials with UV-visible spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. We immobilized the HNCs on fumed silica and removed organic surfactants …

Elucidating The Non-Shivering Thermogenesis Response In The Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus), Sweta Chand
Dissertations and Theses
The adaptation of small birds to cold environments involves mechanisms for both heat conservation and heat generation. While minimizing heat loss reduces the energy needed to maintain body temperature, thermogenesis remains essential. Shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) are two likely mechanisms supporting cold adaptation in small avian species. Although sarcolipin (SLN) aids NST in small mammals, studies in birds such as Dark- eyed Juncos have shown no increase or even a decrease in SLN expression during cold exposure, suggesting limited involvement. This may reflect biological differences or limitations of mRNA- focused sequencing, which excludes long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) capable of …

First-Principles Modeling Of Nitazoxanide Analogues As Prospective Pfor-Targeted Antibacterials, Islam Gomaa
Nanotechnology Research Centre
Pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) is a key Achilles’ heel in anaerobic pathogens. We integrate electronic-structure calculations (DFT), cheminformatic QSAR metrics, and residue-resolved docking to distill a concise “recognition code” and translate it into practical design rules. Using nitazoxanide (Nita; ΔG(bind) ≈ −10.0 kcal·mol−1) as a well-established reference, productive binding requires a conserved triad: a hydrogen-bond donor addressing Thr-997 and Cys-840, a π–π stack with Phe-869, and a recurrent π–σ contact to Thr-997 that orients the scaffold. Deacetylation to tizoxanide unmasks the phenolic donor and raises local electrophilicity, yet it also slightly loosens pocket packing (−9.6 kcal·mol−1). Strategic halogenation introduces a σ-hole …

Reflections On The Importance Of Critical Theory To Teaching Environmental Law, Sean Kammer
Reflections On The Importance Of Critical Theory To Teaching Environmental Law, Sean Kammer
Faculty Publications
The freedom of students to learn about critical approaches to understanding their world is under sustained political attack. In this time of increasing environmental peril and political dysfunction, Professor Sean M. Kammer reflects upon the importance of critical theory (including Critical Race Theory) to understanding—and ultimately redressing—the related problems of resource scarcity and environmental degradation. While these problems can surely be described in terms of “economic inefficiencies” or “ecological disturbances,” as they most often are, they must also be understood (and taught) as problems of colonial exploitation and violence. For example, one cannot understand Justice John Marshall’s discovery doctrine or …
Spatial Implications Of Potential Treeline Campfire Restrictions In Selected Usfs-Managed Colorado Wildernesses, Rebecca Hippensteel
Spatial Implications Of Potential Treeline Campfire Restrictions In Selected Usfs-Managed Colorado Wildernesses, Rebecca Hippensteel
Masters Projects
High-elevation ecosystems in Colorado’s Wilderness areas are ecologically sensitive and particularly vulnerable to campfire impacts, which can damage vegetation, alter soil chemistry, and degrade wilderness character. This study presents a preliminary proof of concept evaluating the spatial implications of banning campfires at or above 11,000 feet—used here as a proxy for treeline—in twelve U.S. Forest Service-managed Wilderness areas. Using 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Models from the USGS National Map and Earth Explorer, a raster-based analysis in ArcGIS Pro identified and quantified acreage above 11,000 feet. Across the twelve Wilderness areas, 268,601 acres were found to lie above treeline, representing an …

Rasa3 Identified As A Potential Effector Of The Brain G Protein Gâºo By Mass Spectrometry, Halie Adesin Bell
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
G⍺o, the alpha subunit of the most abundant heterotrimeric G protein in the brain, mediates signaling by opioids and by many neuromodulators to inhibit neural function. An open question is whether activated G⍺o-GTP directly binds to and regulates effector molecules, like all other animal G⍺ proteins, or if it signals solely by releasing Gβ subunits. Using mouse brain lysates as native source of G⍺o and its potential effectors, I analyzed immunopurified G⍺o protein complexes by mass spectrometry. I identified several proteins that interact preferentially with inactive or active G⍺o. I focused my analysis on proteins that are significantly upregulated in …

Psychedelic Medicine Exceptionalism, Mason Marks, I. Glenn Cohen
Scholarly Publications
Research on psychedelic medicines is experiencing a revival. Some clinicians, scientists, and ethicists believe that psychedelics are so different from other treatments that they warrant special consideration in how they are researched, regulated, commercialized, and administered. Others argue that psychedelic medicines show clinical potential, but they should be treated like other medical interventions. In other words, identical standards should apply. This article analyzes whether psychedelic medicines warrant special consideration from a regulatory and ethical perspective.

Plasmonic Nanopore Sensing For The Characterization Of Viruses And Biomolecules, Scott Renkes
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
The rapid advancement of nanomedicine has enabled increasingly precise nanotherapeutic platforms, including targeted nanoparticles, monoclonal antibodies, and viral gene delivery vectors. As these technologies mature, quality control and analytical characterization have emerged as critical bottlenecks, particularly in systems where functional outcomes depend on one-to-one molecular or particle–biological interactions. Conventional ensemble-averaged techniques obscure heterogeneity that is often central to therapeutic efficacy, safety, and manufacturability. A prominent example is adeno-associated virus (AAV)–based gene therapy, where production yields heterogeneous populations of empty, partially loaded, and fully loaded capsids. Genome fill percentage and integrity directly influence therapeutic efficacy and dosing accuracy, while limited understanding …

This thesis presents a comprehensive analytical investigation of produced water samples from various oil and gas extraction sites using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Produced water, a significant byproduct of hydrocarbon extraction, contains complex mixtures of organic and inorganic compounds that present analytical challenges and environmental concerns. This research focuses on comparing analytical methodologies, identifying chemical constituents, and evaluating the performance of these techniques against established reference data.
The study analyzed multiple produced water samples for organic compounds using EPA Methods 8260 and 8270, and for elemental composition …
Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Theses and Dissertations
Cellular migration assays, particularly scratch assays, are pivotal in biomedical research for cell motility, wound healing, and metastasis. However, conventional scratch assays suffer from variability due to operator dependence, non-uniform scratch geometry, and a modified microenvironment that impacts reproducibility. This thesis presents the development and validation of a low-cost, 3D-printed device designed to standardize cellular migration assays. The device utilizes a spring mechanism and a biocompatible elastomer to create a uniform cellular exclusion zone without harming the surrounding cells. Through iterative prototyping and testing with MCF10A cell lines, the device demonstrated a significantly lower average standard deviation of length compared …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Additive Manufactured Functional Composites For Biomedical Applications, Alexander Thorne
Synthesis And Characterization Of Additive Manufactured Functional Composites For Biomedical Applications, Alexander Thorne
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the synthesis and characterization of 3D printed polymer composites, with engineered porosity and both natural and synthetic additives, using fused deposition modeling (FDM) and selective laser sintering (SLS) for potential biomedical applications. The structural, mechanical, tribological, and surface behavior of these composites were evaluated with respect to their suitability for orthopedic load-bearing implants and scaffolds. In the first phase, PEEK-based composites reinforced with 10 or 20 wt% carbon fibers or 20 wt% E-glass fibers were fabricated using FDM with varying infill densities of 30-100% to introduce porosity. Results revealed that loading additives, infill densities, and porosity play …
