Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors: Allosteric Structural Modulation And New Treatments For Anxiety Disorders, Madaniah O. Zakari

ABSTRACT Anxiety disorders are psychiatric ailments that affect people throughout the world. Several studies have revealed that the development of anxiety is affected by changes in glutamatergic neurotransmission. Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) can be allosterically modified, offering a new strategy for developing specific therapeutic agents that affect the cell membrane. Allosteric modulators have many advantages over other therapeutic options. In the field of stress treatment modulation, they can maintain the properties of natural glutamatergic neurotransmission. This review describes the design of allosteric modulators and the advantages of this class of compounds over current stress drugs.

The fallout of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision has included two seemingly distinct but critically related dynamics. First, religiously motivated plaintiffs are filing lawsuits challenging abortion bans on free exercise grounds. These lawsuits argue, in accordance with current free exercise doctrine, that a state’s compelling interest in protecting “fetal life” is undermined by secular exceptions to abortion bans. Second, state lawmakers have been forced to confirm that their state abortion bans do not apply to in vitro fertilization (IVF), a fertility treatment that regularly requires the discarding of embryos. Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This chapter examines the influence of pre-20th century constitutions using a quantitative approach, comparing expert-selected “iconic” constitutions with those identified algorithmically. In prior work, human experts identified four influential constitutions: the U.S. 1791, France 1791, Spain 1812, and France 1848. Here, we employ a genetic algorithm and Document Term Matrix (DTM) analysis to assess which one or four of 180 pre-1899 constitutions had the greatest textual impact on 581 post-1900 constitutions. Two criteria guide the selection: coverage and originality. Through iterative optimization, the algorithm identifies the most textually influential constitutions, allowing for a direct comparison with expert selections. This chapter …

Phosphatase of Regenerating Liver 3 (PRL-3) is frequently upregulated in various cancers and is associated with poor patient prognosis. Although traditionally studied for its phosphatase activity, PRL-3 also interacts with the CNNM family of magnesium transporters through its catalytic site, and these two functions are mutually exclusive at any given time. Most previous studies relied on a commonly used PRL-3 mutation that disrupts both phosphatase activity and CNNM binding, making it challenging to determine which function drives its oncogenic effects. To address this gap in the field, I utilized a panel of PRL-3 mutants that selectively disrupt either phosphatase activity …

This thesis body of artwork investigates theories of “home,” the phenomenology of space, and the uncanny, exploring where the familiar becomes unfamiliar and the ordinary transforms into an enigmatic realm. Through depictions of domestic environments, these paintings challenge conventional perceptions of space and confront the eerie in the everyday to reflect on how those spaces shape our emotional and psychological experiences.

Feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) are a prolific species in western North America. Due to their life history traits and history of domestication, they have a longer foaling period compared to native ungulates, such as elk (Cervus canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). I examined the observed foaling seasons of different regional herds throughout North America to identify if foaling seasons are uniform across latitudes or if they present a latitudinal shift similar to ungulates. A growing body of literature shows strong evidence for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) exhibiting hypoarousal compared to neurotypical children. This research is supported in conditions where stimuli are present and at a resting-state. However, the research with adult ADHD is conflicting. Adults with ADHD have been shown to exhibit no difference, hypoarousal, and hyperarousal compared to neurotypical adults. Therefore, the present study aims to employ a resting-state analysis of electrodermal activity (arousal) between self-reporting adults with ADHD (n = 11) and without ADHD (n = 8). This study serves to address the question: Is there a correlation between water quality and antibiotic resistance in microbes isolated from rainwater throughout varying coastal environments? We hypothesize that there is a correlation between water quality and incidence of antibiotic resistance in rainwater isolates, measured by directly comparing fecal coliform concentration to the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of each rainwater isolate. We additionally expect to see higher concentrations of fecal coliforms in the rainwater than is safe to ingest as established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards.

Native bees provide crucial and efficient pollination services (Kremin, 2002). However, habitat fragmentation due to urban sprawl can contribute to native bee biodiversity loss (Hung, 2017). The College of the Canyons Buzz team used native bee diversity as a proxy for biodiversity and conducted research on native bee diversity on both of our college facilities and at nearby locations from April 2022 through July 2024. 213 bees across 5 families and 18 genera were collected from the Valencia campus, and floral hosts were documented. Plants and their pathogens are often described as being in an "evolutionary arms race" that allows them to continue their survival. Effector molecules, which are what pathogens use to combat plant defenses, are encoded by genes that have often been observed to be located in more dense parts of the genome, providing a potential mechanism to accumulate more mutations than other genes. In this project, I used several statistical models to quantify the compartmentalization of effector genes. The Mid-West Scallop Resource (Resource) is only accessed by the Abrolhos Islands Mid-West Trawl Managed Fishery (AIMWTMF). The AIMWTMF is the second largest scallop fishery in Western Australia. Access is limited to the 10 licences granted to access the Resource, which are managed through a range of, gear controls, catch rates and seasonal closures. They access saucer scallops, Ylistrum balloti (formerly Amusium balloti) using otter trawls fished over predominantly sand. The fishery was certified by the Marine Stewardship Council in 2021, with the fishery entering re-certification in 2026.

Background:

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Morocco. In October 2022, the Ministry of Health introduced the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into the national immunization program. This study aimed to assess knowledge, satisfaction, and acceptability regarding HPV infection and vaccination among Moroccan medical students.

Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2021 and July 2022 among fifth-year and higher medical students from all nine Moroccan medical universities. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed descriptively and analytically.

For decades, courts have grappled with the tension between compensating victims of mass harms and maintaining fairness to defendants when causation is difficult to prove. This Article argues that the Supreme Court’s due process jurisprudence provides a relevant framework for navigating this tension. We contend that the Court over the last three decades has established a consistent Fourteenth Amendment due process approach in punitive damages and personal jurisdiction cases, which is rooted in antecedents tracing to the nineteenth century and relies on a nexus of interests that balances individual rights, state interests, and federalism concerns.
