Improving Academics Using Brain Breaks, Nicole Rose Graeve

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how brain breaks, also known as activity breaks, impact student learning and retention as well as student overall well-being. The compiled research in this review demonstrates how breaks taken throughout the day not only help with health benefits, but also help students academically. Breaks help students perform better in the classroom, but even more importantly, students reported greater focus, engagement, and less restlessness after taking either a brain or academic break. This is reinforced through effective classroom implementation and proper application of brain breaks. Examples of common brain breaks include a video with active instructions to get …

Development Of The Mechanoresponsive Pericellular Matrix Of Chondrons, Donghee Lee, Sydney E. Greer, Andrew T. Dudley Jan 2025

Development Of The Mechanoresponsive Pericellular Matrix Of Chondrons, Donghee Lee, Sydney E. Greer, Andrew T. Dudley

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Physical properties of cartilage are conferred by the composition and ultrastructure of the extracellular matrix. This study focuses on the development of the pericellular matrix (PCM), a domain that directly contacts the chondrocyte and is a key regulator of biomechanical and biochemical signaling. Using three-dimensional cell culture, microfluidic cell compression platforms, and genetic mouse models, we demonstrated that collagen VI is initially assembled at the cell surface and then displaced to form a shell at the PCM-territorial matrix boundary. Cell surface-bound hyaluronan is crucial for the assembly process, and hyaluronan-aggrecan complexes drive displacement. Integrin adhesion is not required early but …

Perspectivism And Wicked Problems: Patterns In The Discovery Process Of Leibniz, Bohr, And Turing, Ernesto Diaz Jan 2025

Perspectivism And Wicked Problems: Patterns In The Discovery Process Of Leibniz, Bohr, And Turing, Ernesto Diaz

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Authored Dissertations and Theses

This research investigates fundamental patterns in how transformative scientific knowledge emerges and becomes established, examining three pivotal cases: Leibniz's development of calculus, Bohr's formulation of complementarity, and Turing's conceptualisation of computation and artificial intelligence. The study introduces the o-é-c model (Ouverture Ontologique - Épistémè Socialisante - Connaissance Éclairante) to explain how individual insights become integrated into collective knowledge through structured phases of development. Drawing on Minsky's conception of knowledge as mental models for problem-solving and Longino's social epistemology, the research demonstrates how wicked problems—those that resist formulation within existing frameworks—catalyse the creation of new knowledge domains. The model reveals how …

Family Secrets: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Self After Dna Revelation, Joanna Rybnick M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

How much do we know about our families? There is limited research on the influx of family secrets revealed through genetic ancestry (genealogical/DNA) testing, a method utilized to learn about genealogy and family history that has become increasingly popular (Jorde & Bamshad, 2020). The present study stems from available research and archival stories and allows for a deeper understanding of how family secrets may present themselves in therapy. Previous research has focused on the content of secrets, categorizing themes within secrets, and the various functions of secret-keeping within family dynamics (Vangelisti, Caughlin, & Timmerman, 2001; Vangelisti & Caughlin, 1997). Additionally, …

The Role And Impact Of Mobile Stroke Units, Jocelyn Grosch Jan 2025

The Role And Impact Of Mobile Stroke Units, Jocelyn Grosch

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025

Strokes are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Optimal outcomes in stroke care depend on rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment. In hospitals, stroke protocols prioritize rapid computed tomography (CT) scans and bloodwork to diagnose and treat the patient promptly as needed. A mobile stroke unit (MSU) is a specialized ambulance equipped with a stroke team, a built-in CT scanner, and the necessary medications for treatment. This pre-hospital intervention has significantly decreased diagnosis and interventional treatment times, leading to better patient outcomes. In particular, MSUs are important for enabling the administration of treatments, such …

Gompertz Distribution On Time Scales, Wasiu Sule

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

We shall investigate Gompertz dynamic equations within the context of time scales calculus, by exploring the mathematical foundations and applications of the Gompertz model, which is commonly used to describe growth phenomena in various fields such as biology and economics. This research seeks to analyze the Gompertz cumulative distribution functions (CDF) and probability density functions (PDF) across different time scales, including the real numbers R and integer multiples hN. Probability techniques will be used to derive the CDF and PDF associated with the Gompertz dynamic equations, and we will examine how varying the time scale impacts the characteristics …

Discrete Fractional Gompertz Models, Rebecca Oduro Jan 2025

Discrete Fractional Gompertz Models, Rebecca Oduro

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis explores the theory and application of discrete fractional Gompertz models—systems that integrate fractional difference operators into the classical Gompertz growth paradigm. By doing so, these models capture both discrete time steps and the long-range memory effects characteristic of fractional calculus. After outlining the fundamental notions of discrete calculus, discrete fractional sums and differences, and related special functions such as the discrete Mittag–Leffler function, we derive various fractional Gompertz-type equations. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these fractional difference equations, often employing discrete analogues of standard solution methods like variation of constants. We also investigate the …

Zinc Promotes Mitochondrial Health Through Pgc-1alpha Enhancing Bacterial Clearance In Macrophages Infected With Mycobacterium Avium Complex, Ruxana Sadikot, Prabagaran Narayanasamy, Zhihong Yuan, Deandra R. Smith, Daren L. Knoell

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

Mitochondria are increasingly recognized as important contributors to immune function, in addition to energy production. They exert this influence through modulation of various signaling pathways that regulate cellular metabolism and immune function in response to pathogens. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) is the primary transcription factor and regulator involved in mitochondrial biogenesis. Long known to be involved in immune function, zinc (Zn) is also required for proper mitochondrial function. It is increasingly recognized that many cellular immunometabolic activities are also Zn-dependent. Taken together, we investigated the role of Zn deficiency, both dietary and genetically induced, and Zn …

Material Suppliers’ Perspective On Collaboration In Industrial Construction Projects, Seogjae Choi, William J. O'Brien

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Material suppliers' involvement in construction project planning has been recommended as an effective measure to improve project performance by using their expertise. However, the recommendation is not universal, and some researchers disputed the value of early involvement of suppliers depending on material type. Moreover, prior studies considered main contractors' and owners' perspectives mostly in examining how to increase the involvement of suppliers. To add material suppliers' perspective, this study conducted interviews with experienced professionals from 16 material suppliers including standardized, make-to-order, and custom products. The results are specified by separating the type of materials and sub-phases of planning. The results …

Theses & ETDs

Biomonitoring systems are used for monitoring a variable in an environment by using a change in organisms in the environment as an indicator. Many different species have been used as bioindicators, with bivalves being one of them. As adults, many bivalve species remain sedentary, where they can easily be handled for testing. Due to their filter feeding nature, they will react and close their valves when exposed to polluted areas. Studies have shown that bivalves are sensitive to many of the chemicals regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency in America and the European Union. By using sensors to monitor the …

Aphrodisiac Flesh : (Produce)Ing The Female Nude, Pénélope Donetti

Theses & ETDs

This essay examines the symbolic relationship between food, the female body, and societal perceptions of women shaped by the male gaze, connecting these themes to my own artwork. Drawing inspiration from religious and historical narratives, my work critiques the alienation and commodification of women through symbolic and cultural representations. Through the analysis of artist Sarah Lucas and art historian Linda Nochlin, I explore how food is tied to femininity and desire, reflecting societal expectations of women as both providers and objects of consumption. Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the alienation of women when …
