Background: Endometriosis, a poorly studied gynecological condition, is characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial lesions resulting in pelvic pain, inflammation, and infertility. These associated symptoms contribute to a significant burden, often exacerbated by delayed diagnosis. Current diagnostic methods involve invasive procedures, and existing treatments provide no cure.
Methods: Microbiome-metabolome signatures in stool samples from individuals with and without endometriosis were determined using unbiased metabolomics and 16S bacteria sequencing. Functional studies for selected microbiota-derived metabolites were conducted in vitro using patient-derived cells and in vivo by employing murine and human xenograft pre-clinical disease models.
Findings: We discovered a unique bacteria-derived …

Impulsivity represents an individual's tendency to act on urges without sufficient forethought. Heightened impulsivity is a hallmark of many mental health disorders. Objective impulsivity assessments could improve risk evaluation, diagnosis, and behavioral outcome monitoring in impulsivity-related health disorders. Towards objective impulsivity assessment, in this work, we identify impulsivity correlates in objective measurements, investigate their complementarity, and contrast impulsivity mechanisms across health conditions. We analyzed behavioral tests, heart rate variability (HRV), and fMRI-based brain connectivity in 227 healthy participants and 34 participants with mood disorders. Impulsivity dimensions had complementary correlates in objective measurements, with fMRI providing the strongest correlates. Multimodal assessment …

Aberrant Homeodomain-Dna Cooperative Dimerization Underlies Distinct Developmental Defects In Two Dominant Crx Retinopathy Models, Yiqiao Zheng, Gary D Stormo, Shiming Chen
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Paired-class homeodomain (HD) transcription factors (TFs) play essential roles in vertebrate development, and their mutations are linked to human diseases. One unique feature of a paired-class HD is cooperative dimerization on specific palindrome DNA sequences. Yet, the functional significance of HD cooperative dimerization in animal development and its dysregulation in diseases remains elusive. Using the retinal TF cone-rod homeobox (CRX) as a model, we have studied how blindness-causing mutations in the paired HD, p.E80A and p.K88N, alter CRX's cooperative dimerization, leading to gene misexpression and photoreceptor developmental deficits in dominant manners. CRX

Teaching Sprinting As A Specialized Skill In Elementary Physical Education, Dillon R. Martinez, Scott Klepadlo
Essays in Education
This article highlights the gap between current physical grade-level outcomes and the practical implementation of sprinting instruction in elementary schools. This emphasizes the need for higher education institutions to learn from practicing elementary teachers, who have successfully incorporated sprinting into their elementary curricula. While pre-service physical education teachers are not typically taught how to teach sprinting as a specialized skill, some elementary PE teachers have developed effective methods for doing so. This article suggests that higher education practitioners should examine these practitioners to inform and improve their teacher preparation programs. This paper outlines several practical applications currently used in elementary …

Influence Of Oil Density On Self-Propelled Motion Of Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction Droplet, Vivek Bharat Meshram, Anupama Sebastian, Puthiyapurayil Sibeesh, T K Shajahan
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction serves as an example of the nonlinear chemical oscillator in which the reacting substance undergoes sequential oxidation and reduction. A droplet containing the BZ reaction, when placed within the oily environment, can self-propel. In this experimental work, we explore the effect of oil medium density on the BZ reaction droplet dynamics. In an oil medium with lower density, the BZ droplet exhibits higher speed and effective diffusivity but a shorter lifetime. Both the distance and speed of the droplet initially increase with droplet volume. However, beyond a critical volume, the distance decreases while the speed stays constant. Interestingly, …

Pharmacogenomics Implications Of Tamoxifen In Breast Cancer Treatment: Clinical Relevance And Future Directions, Khalda E. M. Elhaj, Mahmoud M. E. Mudawi, Hamad A. Albagir A. Ali, Kamal A.A. Mohammed
Saudi Toxicology Journal
Tamoxifen is a cornerstone therapy for estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, improving survival and reducing recurrence. Its efficacy and toxicity, however, vary due to genetic polymorphisms influencing metabolism and transport. Key genes, such as CYP2D6, CYP3A4, and ATP-binding cassette transporters (ABCB1, ABCC2), are crucial in forming and distributing active metabolites like endoxifen. This review explores tamoxifen pharmacogenetics through an analysis of literature from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PharmaGKB. Genetic variations like CYP2D6*10 in Asians and CYP2D6*17/29 in Africans impact therapeutic outcomes. Barriers to personalized tamoxifen therapy include inconsistent guidelines, limited access to genetic testing, and underrepresentation of ethnic groups …

Objective:
Although growing evidence indicates that distinct affect regulation strategies (e.g., positive reappraisal, anger suppression) predict mortality risk, the biological processes involved remain understudied. We investigated the association of various affect regulation exposures with mortality risk while examining the role of allostatic load.
Method:
In 2004-2006, 1,941 participants from the Midlife in the United States longitudinal study completed validated scales assessing use of nine general and emotion-specific regulatory strategies (e.g., denial, anger expression). A standard deviation-based algorithm was also used to characterize how flexibly participants regulate their affect (lower, moderate, or greater variability). Participants further provided data on relevant covariates …
