Aspen Health On National Forests In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region (2008/2009 To 2024), James T. Blodgett, Kurt K. Allen, Megan Wilson, Bradley Lalande

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a widely distributed species in the western United States, but in the northern Rocky Mountain Region it is a rare forest component. In national forests (NF) of the northern Rocky Mountain Region this species comprises only 1% of the Bighorn, 3% of the Black Hills, and 1% of the Shoshone cover types (DeBlander 2002, Menlove 2008, Witt 2008). Since aspen forests provide increased species richness, support wildlife, are an important component of watersheds, and have aesthetic value, there are concerns regarding the health of this relatively rare forest cover type.

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Direct competition for resources is especially fierce among predators, leading to disproportionately strong effects on fitness and functional roles. These competitive effects are exacerbated in complex predator guilds with dominance hierarchies that have clear winners and losers. The direct costs of losing these competitions are well understood, but the drivers of such interactions, and their indirect effects on prey, are not. We evaluate the drivers of interference competition for cougars, and how such competition affects cougar-prey dynamics, by leveraging 23 years of cougar predation data from Yellowstone National Park, USA. We show that the effect of prey size is context-dependent, …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Most advances in early human postimplantation development depend on animal studies and stem cell-based embryo models. Here, we present self-organized three-dimensional human gastruloids (hGs) derived from embryonic stem cells. The transcriptome profile of day 3 hGs aligned with Carnegie stage 7 human gastrula, with cell types and differentiation trajectories consistent with human gastrulation. Notably, we observed the emergence of nascent primordial germ cell-like cells (PGCLCs), but without exogenous bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, which is essential for the PGCLC fate. A mutation in the

Brain-Targeted Reactive Oxygen Species In Hypertension: Unveiling Subcellular Dynamics, Immune Cross-Talk, And Novel Therapeutic Pathways, Renjun Wang, Min Wang, Dongshu Du, Zhiying Shan, Lanrong Bi, Qing-Hui Chen

Michigan Tech Publications

Hypertension (HTN) is a complex disease with significant global health implications, driven by neural and oxidative mechanisms. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), once considered mere metabolic byproducts, are now recognized as one of the key contributors to dysfunction of the autonomic nerve system, which involves the onset and progression of HTN. This review highlights the dynamic roles of ROS in neuronal signaling, subcellular compartmentalization, and brain-immune interactions, focusing on their impacts on synaptic remodeling, neuroinflammation, and epigenetic modifications within key autonomic regions such as the paraventricular nucleus and rostral ventrolateral medulla. We discuss novel ROS sources, including microglia-derived and endoplasmic reticulum …

Abstract: Pankewycz, Nicholas Adam. PhD. The University of Memphis. December 2024. “the letting of blood”: Evolutionary Perspectives on Violence in Cormac McCarthy’s Western Worlds. Theron Britt PhD. Through a close analysis of Cormac McCarthy's Western oeuvre, the dissertation examines how his depiction of violence reflects fundamental aspects of human nature, suggesting that the aggressive behaviors portrayed are inherent and shaped by environmental and evolutionary pressures. McCarthy's unflinching narratives provide insight into the darker facets of humanity, depicting scenes of brutality that challenge readers to confront the pervasive nature of violence in both American history and the human species. By situating …

The Effects Of Exposure To Ultraviolet Light On The Activity Of Catalase In Internal And External Tissues Of The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Ellerie C. Heinzmann

Undergraduate Theses

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can have negative impacts on organisms that are exposed to it. The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is an organism that resides in shallow waters which can experience exposure to UVR. One negative impact that can occur from UVR is an increase in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to cell stress. In this experiment, two treatments were performed on L. variegatus in the adult state. The first included an exposure to UV-B radiation for 8 hours, and the second was an 8-hour UV-B exposure with temperatures at 30 °C to replicate environmental conditions in …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Planning Using Hybrid D* Lite With Ppo And Td3: Experimental Design And Performance Analysis, Matthew J. Rice Mar 2025

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Planning Using Hybrid D* Lite With Ppo And Td3: Experimental Design And Performance Analysis, Matthew J. Rice

Undergraduate Theses

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) face significant challenges in underwater navigation, including generating smooth paths, avoiding obstacles, and adapting to complex conditions. This paper introduces a hybrid path-planning algorithm, D-RL*, that integrates the D* Lite algorithm for efficient initial pathfinding with Deep Reinforcement Learning methods to refine paths for smoother trajectories. The proposed approach addresses D* Lite's inability to produce continuous, smooth paths and baseline Reinforcement Learnings’ failures in environments requiring significant detours. Experimental results in four progressively complex environments highlight D-RL*’s ability to plan smoother paths than D* Lite while training in a shorter amount of time and generating shorter …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And High School Dropout: The Roles Of Student Disengagement And Social Support, Rachel D. Pounders Mar 2025

Adverse Childhood Experiences And High School Dropout: The Roles Of Student Disengagement And Social Support, Rachel D. Pounders

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

More than two million students a year leave high school without a completion credential (NCES, 2024). Students who drop out are at-risk for detrimental long-term outcomes physically, mentally and economically (Rumberger, 2020). Students with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are significantly more likely to have poor educational outcomes, including school dropout (Metzler et al., 2017; Pan et al., 2019). However, there is limited insight into what affects the pathway between ACEs and poor educational outcomes for students (Dupéré et al., 2019; Morrow & Villodas, 2018). Informed by prominent dropout theories with ecological foundations and the theory of stress and coping, this …

Stable Heteroclinic Channels As A Decision-Making Model: Overcoming Low Signal-To-Noise Ratio With Mutual Inhibition, Natasha A. Rouse Mar 2025

Stable Heteroclinic Channels As A Decision-Making Model: Overcoming Low Signal-To-Noise Ratio With Mutual Inhibition, Natasha A. Rouse

Faculty Scholarship

Bio-inspired robot controllers are becoming more complex as we strive to make them more robust to, and flexible in, noisy, real-world environments. A stable heteroclinic network (SHN) is a dynamical system that produces cyclical state transitions using noisy input. SHN-based robot controllers enable sensory input to be integrated at the phase-space level of the controller, thus simplifying sensor-integrated, robot control methods. In this work, we investigate the mechanism that drives branching state trajectories in SHNs. We liken the branching state trajectories to decision-splits imposed into the system, which opens the door for more sophisticated controls-all driven by sensory input. This …

Application Of Quantum Entanglement To Explain The Healing Mechanism By Highly Diluted Homoeopathic Medicines, Bijay Krishna Chaudhuri, Biswadeep Chaudhuri

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Background: The healing mechanism of highly diluted homoeopathic medicines (DHM) is not yet very clear.

Objectives: Our objective is to apply the concepts of entropy, information, and quantum mechanical principle of entanglement to find a model for explaining the healing mechanism of DHM.

Methodology: All living or non-living things are composed of dynamic microscopic quantum particles (electrons, protons, ions, etc.) which follow the basic properties of quantum mechanics such as quantum entanglement, superposition of quantum states and coherent interaction among these particles. The continuous change of thermodynamic entropies of the dynamic living cells leads to information change for cellular communication …
