Proposed Evaluation Of Nonpharmacological Treatments And Therapies For Paclitaxel Based Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (Cipn), Mackenzie Lesczcynski
Proposed Evaluation Of Nonpharmacological Treatments And Therapies For Paclitaxel Based Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (Cipn), Mackenzie Lesczcynski
D.U.Quark
Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) is a common complication in breast cancer patients receiving Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic agent (1). CIPN symptoms range from numbness to extreme pain and sensitivity in bodily extremities, forcing chemotherapy to be halted (2). The mechanism of this side effect is not well understood and there is no standard pharmacological treatment available to improve effects. Nonpharmacological treatments have been attempted on small patient cohorts, but there are no conclusive findings (3). Due to this, we believe that a comprehensive murine model must be developed in order to assess nonpharmacological treatment efficacy and potential molecular targets for pharmacological …

Diverse Microbial Prey In The Guts Of Gelatinous Grazers Revealed By Microscopy, Terra C. Hiebert, Anne W. Thompson, Kelly R. Sutherland
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mucous mesh grazers including pelagic tunicates and thecosome pteropods play a key role in oceanic food webs. They are taxonomically and morphologically diverse and can be highly abundant. Using their fine mucous meshes, these pelagic grazers ingest a wide range of plankton prey and link pelagic and benthic marine ecosystems. Characterizing the diet of this group is central to fully understanding marine food webs and developing accurate food web models. However, gelatinous grazers are challenging to study owing to their physically delicate composition so studying their feeding ecology requires numerous complementary techniques. Microscopy has largely been supplanted by other methods, …
Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Next-Generation Biomedical Implants And Stimuli Responsive Soft Optical Arrays Via Surface Functionalized Elastomeric Materials, John M. Kapitan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The demands of emerging technologies, such as soft robotics, stretchable electronics, and next generation biomedical implants, has led to the development of diverse polymeric and hybrid organic/inorganic materials specifically tuned to meet these challenges. These materials typically have low Young’s moduli and are inert with high chemical stability. However, this has led to materials that are static in nature, lacking any meaningful way of responding to changes in their environment and adapting to these changes. This has driven a shift towards the design, manufacturing, and characterization of various stimuli responsive surfaces, relying on precise control of surface chemical coatings and …

Ground-Arthropod Assemblage Response To Groundwater As A Metric Of Flooding In The Middle Rio Grande, Wesley J. Noe
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Riparian zones are dynamic ecosystems, crucial for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance, particularly in arid environments like the Middle Rio Grande (MRG). Ground arthropods, with their sensitivity to environmental changes, serve as bioindicators for assessing the impacts of water regime changes in the MRG, specifically flooding which was historically the main driver of the MRG ecosystem. This study investigated the responses of ground arthropod communities to fluctuations in groundwater and land management practices within MRG riparian habitats. Using a combination of pitfall trapping and habitat assessments, arthropod abundance was assessed in relation to depth to groundwater (DTG). Findings revealed shifts …

Defining Diversity: Challenges To Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Efforts In A Post-Affirmative Action America, Hannah Brown
Defining Diversity: Challenges To Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Efforts In A Post-Affirmative Action America, Hannah Brown
Missouri Law Review
Finals season is a time of high stress in law schools. In fact, it is not uncommon for students to fantasize about miraculously convincing a court that a four-hour exam constitutes a form of intentional infliction of emotional distress. Such commentary remains firmly in comedic territory, not reality. Occasionally, however, law students with grievances beyond those expressed in the dramatic remarks above devote time and energy to seeking legal action against their respective law schools. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York encountered such a situation in Doe v. New York University, where a student alleged …

This study investigated the effects of age-related hearing decline on functional networks using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The main objective of the present study was to examine resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and graph theory-based network efficiency metrics in forty-nine adults categorized by age and hearing thresholds to identify the neural mechanisms of age-related hearing decline. RsFC within key brain networks and auditory-related brain regions, including the default mode network, salience network, dorsal attention network, and primary auditory cortices, was assessed using region-of-interest (ROI)-based and graph theory approaches. Functional metrics, such as rsFC strength and global and local efficiency, …
Clinical Case Study: The Effects Of Saltatory Pneumotactile Stimulation Of Glabrous Hand And Perioral Face On Cerebral Oxygenation, Cognitive Performance, And Sensorimotor Function In An Adult Following Left Hemorrhagic Stroke, Tara L. Hull
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Stroke remains a leading cause of adult disability and a significant global health concern. Effective rehabilitation strategies for cognitive and communicative impairments following stroke are limited (Kuhn & Sharman, 2023). One emerging approach involves repetitive somatosensory stimulation to drive cerebral hemodynamic changes, potentially offering a novel rehabilitative method. Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive, accessible tool for monitoring these changes during stroke recovery. Prior studies suggest tactile stimulation rapidly affects brain hemodynamics (Custead et al., 2015; Oh et al., 2017). This clinical single-case study explored the use of GALILEO saltatory pneumotactile stimulation applied to the face and hand in …

Music And Word Learning In Children Diagnosed With Developmental Language Disorder, Rebekah G. Sweeney
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Purpose: This study investigates whether incorporating music into vocabulary interventions improves rate of learning and retention of words in children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Emerging literature continues to show the plentiful benefits of music as a tool for intervention in many settings, including the world of speech pathology (Levitin, 2024). However, it is also evident that there is a connection between struggling with language, and struggling with musical elements, such as rhythm and pitch perception, particularly in children with DLD (Boorom et al., 2022; Kreidler et al., 2023). This study seeks to tease out if music is an effective …

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity
The machine learning-based authentication model for smart healthcare systems represents a crucial step in addressing the needs of an ever-evolving healthcare industry. The need to protect sensitive patient data, ensure regulatory compliance, and reduce medical errors, especially in the context of telemedicine and remote monitoring, underscores the importance of such systems. Traditional authentication methods frequently lack sufficient security, resulting in potential breaches. Relying solely on usernames and passwords, without supplementary authentication measures, exposes systems to advanced security attacks. As it involves patients’ health and human lives, it is important to provide additional authentication, fast machine learning-based authentication models and high …
How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson
How Do School-Level Dynamics Impact Mainstreaming Practices In American Schools?, Natalie M. Watson
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
How do school-level dynamics impact the everyday experiences of students with disabilities, compared to their abled peers? Extant research has mostly focused on the experiences of individual students with disabilities, and their teachers. We know far less about how school-level dynamics shape students’ experiences. Historically, American schools formally separated students with and without disabilities, though the specific mode varied over time -- ranging from explicit institutionalization to segregation in special education programs. At least since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, efforts to educate students with disabilities alongside their abled peers in mainstreamed settings have increased …

Dental Disparities: An Analysis Of Dental Caries Risk Factors Promoting Disparities Between Rural And Urban Communities In Nebraska, Nick Lounsbery
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The prevalence of dental caries in the United States remains a public health concern, as it is one of the most common chronic conditions across people of all ages. Research shows that preventative measures including brushing, fluoridated water, and regular checkups are effective strategies to mitigate tooth decay. However, there appears to be a divide between rural and urban populations, as the presence of dental cavities is significantly greater in remote areas in the State of Nebraska. Research methods used in this analysis included analyzing accredited academic literature to illustrate how cavities form from a biochemical perspective. Research methods also …

Investigating Appalachian Medical Students’ Perceived Supports And Inhibitors To Their Aspirations Using Habitus And Capital, Jason Hedrick, Erin Mchenry-Sorber
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study examined Appalachian medical student aspiration facilitators and impediments. Using semi-structured interviews from ten medical students, findings were analyzed with habitus, and cultural and social capital, with an emphasis on Appalachia as place. Parents established postsecondary expectations early. Family circumstances were influential, including relatives in healthcare, or attending private school. Success with STEMM and haphazard healthcare interactions stoked further interest. However, families approached medical school from a risk narrative, reconsidering what was a part of their child’s imagined future. Physician interactions often provided mixed guidance and resulted in students questioning their career trajectory. Findings confirm and highlight the value …

Ccr7 Regulated Mechanisms That Limit The Adaptive Immune Response, Jaisel Amilcar Cervantes
Ccr7 Regulated Mechanisms That Limit The Adaptive Immune Response, Jaisel Amilcar Cervantes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
C-C chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) is critical in guiding T cell migration within the thymus and peripheral lymphoid tissues, shaping the adaptive immune response by promoting central tolerance and regulating immune homeostasis. Although its role in lymphocyte trafficking is well established, the molecular mechanisms by which CCR7 influences thymocyte development and T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire formation remain less understood. This study examines how CCR7 deficiency impacts thymic selection, TCR diversity, and the signaling events that shape repertoire restriction. Using a homozygously deleted CCR7 murine model, we found that the absence of CCR7 results in a less restricted TCR repertoire …

Long-Term Bone Changes At Edentulous Sites, Teerarat Neal Phuatrakoon
Master's Theses (2009 -)
BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is a debilitating occurrence that may affect the patient’s emotional and mental well-being. Delays in necessary restorative treatment may occur dependent on the patient’s finances or other elaborate dental treatment plans. Prosthetically guided implants have become the standard of care regarding definitive treatment, however there is a lack of evidence discussing the stability of edentulous sites if deferment of treatment is required. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to measure long-term changes of the edentulous alveolar ridge (height and width) and anatomical structures (e.g. sinus floor, inferior alveolar canal). METHODS: Charts of patients with at least …
Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer
Use Of Wastewater Grit And Milorganite Chaff In Concrete, Carter Deinhammer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Wastewater grit is a major byproduct from preliminary municipal wastewater treatment. Chaff is a collection of dried biosolids generated as a waste product from Milorganite® fertilizer production. Because landfilling is a costly and unsustainable method, the development of technologies for diverting grit from landfills to a useful product by tapping grit’s inherent values (e.g., sand and gravel) are of great interest. Chaff, consisting of fibers, provides a potential source for bolstering concrete tensile strength through internal means. This research has proposed a concept of grit and chaff additive-based concrete, an expansion of the grit-assisted patch material developed (GAP) in previous …
Comparison Of Hand-Wrist And Cvms Methods For Craniofacial Growth Spurt Assessment, Ardita Ajvazi
Comparison Of Hand-Wrist And Cvms Methods For Craniofacial Growth Spurt Assessment, Ardita Ajvazi
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: Hand-wrist (HW) radiographs are considered the most accurate method for assessing pubertal growth spurts in orthodontics but have declined in use due to added radiation exposure and the expertise required. Cervical vertebral maturation staging (CVMS) is now commonly used, given the routine availability of lateral cephalograms. However, the validity of CVMS remains uncertain. A recent study reported only 66% inter-observer reliability across time periods (Ingersoll, 2024). This follow-up study aims to evaluate CVMS as a predictor of growth to guide clinical decision-making. Methods: With protocol approval (MU HR-4695), this retrospective study followed a design modeled after a prior study …
Proteins Associated With The Early Endosome Contribute To De Novo [Psi+] Prion Formation, Jacqueline N. Kivila
Proteins Associated With The Early Endosome Contribute To De Novo [Psi+] Prion Formation, Jacqueline N. Kivila
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Prion diseases are infectious neurodegenerative disorders associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (“Mad cow” disease) and kuru. In prion disease, a native protein can misfold and further convert a normal version of itself to the misfolded conformation. These misfolded proteins can form aggregates which are associated with these diseases. While much work has been dedicated to understanding how protein aggregates impact cellular health, less is known about the cellular mechanisms that contribute to the formation of the prion. To dissect these mechanisms, we use the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which provides a powerful tool for studying prion formation. The …

Despite advancements made in treatment options, cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has gained attention as a minimally invasive and highly selective treatment option for cancer. However, challenges due to the hydrophobicity of photosensitizers and their poor tumor selectivity have limited their use in cancer therapy. Recent developments in nanotechnology, particularly the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), help overcome these challenges. AuNPs provide a stable and biocompatible platform to deliver photosensitizers, improving their solubility, stability, and ability to target tumors while reducing side effects. Functionalized AuNPs take advantage of mechanisms like …
