Faculty Diversity And Minority Enrollment In Advanced Stem Courses: A Case Study At Neville High School, Anaya Cormier
Faculty Diversity And Minority Enrollment In Advanced Stem Courses: A Case Study At Neville High School, Anaya Cormier
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
This study investigates the correlation between the diversity of STEM faculty and the enrollment rates of minority students in honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and dual enrollment STEM courses at Neville High School. Recognizing the long-standing underrepresented minority students in advanced STEM education, this research explores whether a more diverse faculty positively influences student participation in these courses. Using a quantitative correlational design, data on faculty demographics and student enrollment patterns were analyzed through descriptive statistics and chi-square tests of independence. The results are expected to provide information on the role of faculty diversity in fostering equitable academic opportunities. The findings …
An Analysis Of The Alaskan Salmon Harvest, Carson Allen
An Analysis Of The Alaskan Salmon Harvest, Carson Allen
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
The objective of this paper is to analyze the annual Alaskan salmon harvest and the variables that effect the harvest differently each year. Every year, thousands of workers’ livelihoods depend on the annual salmon harvest to provide for themselves and their families. This paper takes this reality and aims to use data gathered from previous fishing seasons to understand what variables affect the salmon population. To analyze the salmon harvest, multiple linear regression will be used over a 41 year period with variables including water temperature, air temperature, yearly harvest, and species of salmon. By modeling these and other variables, …

The Ethics Of Gene Editing Hereditary Deafness, Jasmine Borie
The Ethics Of Gene Editing Hereditary Deafness, Jasmine Borie
Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics
Gene editing has been a hot topic of interest in the field of science, and many gene editing solutions for heritable diseases are in the works. In most cases, gene editing is done with good intentions, but there are some instances where it would not be favorable for reasons that may not be inherently obvious to everyone. Several forms of deafness and hearing loss can be inherited, meaning that it can be passed down from parent to offspring. Curing hereditary deafness using gene editing may seem like a good idea, but it can lead to unintentional discrimination and further stigmatization …

The Impact Of Sec Deadline: Does Accelerated Sec Filing Deadlines For Publicly Traded Companies Increase Restatements Of Financial Statements?, Angela Sutton
Honors Projects in Accounting
This paper examines the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) requirement of the 10-K filing deadlines and how the implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) regulations can cause an increase in the likelihood of misstatements in financial reporting by publicly traded companies. The SEC shortening the deadline time frame had a negative impact on smaller companies since auditors were focusing more on larger companies to get the report done in an effective and timely manner. Investors, in turn, perceive smaller companies as having internal control weaknesses due to being late to file their reports. Data will be collected from all 10-K filing deadlines …

Effects Of Near-Infrared Light Stimulation On Cognition And Biomarkers, Michael Kreienkamp
Effects Of Near-Infrared Light Stimulation On Cognition And Biomarkers, Michael Kreienkamp
Bioengineering Master's Theses
BACKGROUND: Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is an experimental treatment that potentially slows the progression of neurodegenerative diseases by affecting cerebral blood flow, inflammatory processes, and ATP production. Preliminary tPBM studies in humans show that tPBM stimulation can positively influence cognitive function. The objective of this study was to build a cohesive hardware and software system safe for human use, and use that system and another tPBM device to test the cognitive effects and EEG and HRV biomarkers of tPBM.
METHODS: A lab-built prototype device was designed based on the industry standard Neuronic LIGHT tPBM device. The prototype consists of 360 LEDs …

The Roddey Mcmillan Record - April 2025, Winthrop University
The RMR 2020-2029
The Roddey McMillan Record (RMR) is Winthrop’s monthly multicultural student publication. The RMR has been a significant voice of the minority population of the Winthrop community since its creation by Gail Harris in April 1986. It promotes awareness and understanding of issues concerning minorities for the prosperity of the entire Winthrop community. The purpose of the RMR is to shine light on the many diverse cultures at Winthrop, focusing on issues, concerns and happenings of those who represent the multicultural community on campus. The Roddey McMillan Record is named after Dr. Cynthia Roddey and Atty, Sheila McMillan. Cynthia Roddey was …

Deciphering Genotype-Phenotype Connections: Leveraging Pangenomes And Comprehensive Genome Variation, Flavia Villani
Deciphering Genotype-Phenotype Connections: Leveraging Pangenomes And Comprehensive Genome Variation, Flavia Villani
Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)
My thesis explores the application of advanced techniques for discovery of genetic variation and pangenomic approaches to enhance our understanding of genetic variation and genotype-phenotype relationships in two key model organisms: the HXB/BXH recombinant inbred rat family and the BXD mouse family. Through deep sequencing and innovative computational methods, I constructed com- prehensive pangenome graphs that captured genetic diversity beyond what is accessible through conventional single-reference approaches. In the HXB rat family, I identified approximately 200 million base pairs of sequence absent from the reference genome and discovered novel variants associated with glucose metabolism and chromogranin expression through phenome-wide association …

Michigan Tech Publications
MOTIVATION: The mapping from codon to amino acid is surjective due to codon degeneracy, suggesting that codon space might harbor higher information content. Embeddings from the codon language model have recently demonstrated success in various protein downstream tasks. However, predictive models for residue-level tasks such as phosphorylation sites, arguably the most studied Post-Translational Modification (PTM), and PTM sites prediction in general, have predominantly relied on representations in amino acid space. RESULTS: We introduce a novel approach for predicting phosphorylation sites by utilizing codon-level information through embeddings from the codon adaptation language model (CaLM), trained on protein-coding DNA sequences. Protein sequences …
