The MECOM (MDS1 and EVI1 complex locus) gene, located at 3q26.2, encodes an oncogenic transcription factor implicated in multiple signaling pathways. Rearrangements involving MECOM/3q26.2, including inversions, translocations, insertions and cryptic chromosomal changes, are observed in myeloid neoplasms and are associated with high-risk disease features and poor clinical outcomes. The translocation t(3;12)(q26.2;p13.1) is a rare genetic event, resulting in a fusion of the MECOM gene at 3q26.2 with the ETV6 gene at 12p13.1. To date, only 78 cases of hematologic neoplasms harboring t(3;12) have been reported in the English literature, primarily as case reports or case series. T(3;12) has …

A Neutrosophic Micro Vague Correlation Measure: Application To Multi-Criteria Decision Making Problems, Vargees Vahini T, Trinita Pricilla M
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Statistical methods called correlation measures are employed to express the degree of association or relationship between two variables. The correlation coefficient which may be computed in a variety of ways is the most often used kind of correlation measure in many disciplines including biology, psychology, economics, and finance. Knowing the correlations between variables is essential for analysis and decision-making. This paper aims to commence a novel type of correlation measure called Neutrosophic Micro vague Correlation Measure and Neutrosophic Micro Vague Weighted Correlation Measure. Further demonstrates the implementation of the Neutrosophic Micro Vague correlation measure in the MCDM Problem. By adopting …

Improved Estimator For Population Mean Utilizing Known Medians Of Two Auxiliary Variables Under Neutrosophic Framework, Rajesh Singh, Shobh Nath Tiwari
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In the context of classical statistics, the estimation of the population mean is done with determinate, precise, and crisp data when auxiliary information is available. However, there are instances where dealing with uncertain, indeterminate, and imprecise data in interval form is required. To overcome this issue, Florentin Smarandache introduced neutrosophic statistics as a novel approach. This paper introduces a neutrosophic modified ratio-cum-product log-type estimator for the estimation of the population mean using known medians of two auxiliary variables in the neutrosophic context. The bias and mean squared error (MSE) for the proposed estimators are computed to the first-order approximation. The …

Some Graph Parameters For Superhypertree-Width And Neutrosophictree-Width, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Graph characteristics are often studied through various parameters, with ongoing research dedicated to exploring these aspects. Among these, graph width parameters—such as treewidth—are particularly important due to their practical applications in algorithms and real-world problems. A hypergraph generalizes traditional graph theory by abstracting and extending its concepts [77]. More recently, the concept of a SuperHyperGraph has been introduced as a further generalization of the hypergraph. Neutrosophic logic [133], a mathematical framework, extends classical and fuzzy logic by allowing the simultaneous consideration of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity within an interval. In this paper, we explore Superhypertree-width, Neutrosophic treewidth, and t-Neutrosophic tree-width.

A Qualitative Examination Of Probationary Police Candidate Success And Attrition, Joseph Eugene Roy
A Qualitative Examination Of Probationary Police Candidate Success And Attrition, Joseph Eugene Roy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement has undergone significant changes, requiring modern officers to embody a complex blend of traditional values and adaptive capabilities. Despite rigorous selection and training processes, some police recruits leave the profession prematurely, often during their probationary or field training phases. This early attrition represents a costly challenge for law enforcement agencies, with training expenses sometimes exceeding $200,000 per recruit. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of police recruits who successfully completed field training and compared them to the observations of FTOs who trained recruits who left law enforcement early. The research used Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory and …

Social Support And Treatment Outcomes Among Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis And Persons Living With Hiv In Nigeria, Abiodun Olusegun Hassan
Social Support And Treatment Outcomes Among Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis And Persons Living With Hiv In Nigeria, Abiodun Olusegun Hassan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An estimated 40% of people with tuberculosis (TB) are missed due to underdiagnosis, and among those previously treated TB cases, about a quarter develop drug-resistant TB in Nigeria. The emergence of multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is stalling the effort towards TB’s control and eradication. Few studies have examined the impact of the psychosocial effect and support systems for TB, particularly for MDR-TB. In this quantitative, cross-sectional study, the predictive relationship between social support given to MDR-TB patients and their treatment outcomes was examined using secondary data of 594 MDR-TB cases enrolled between January 2018 and December 2021. The theoretical framework for …

Formative Research For A Family Counseling-Special Education Advocacy Intervention, Rosalind C. Ceasar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Families of children with disabilities may face challenges with their children’s education which increases their risk of mental health problems. This formative, qualitative research was to explore the practices of mental health counselors who incorporate special education advocacy into counseling, to advise the development of a family counseling-special education advocacy program. The research question was: what are the special education advocacy practices of mental health counselors when they work with students who require special education and related services and their families, and how can the practices inform the formal development of a family counseling-special education advocacy intervention? Bartholemew et al.’s …

A Reconsideration Of Advanced Concepts In Neutrosophic Graphs: Smart, Zero Divisor, Layered, Weak, Semi, And Chemical Graphs, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
One of the most powerful tools in graph theory is the classification of graphs into distinct classes based on shared properties or structural features. Over time, many graph classes have been introduced, each aimed at capturing specific behaviors or characteristics of a graph. Neutrosophic Set Theory, a method for handling uncertainty, extends fuzzy logic by incorporating degrees of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. Building on this framework, Neutrosophic Graphs [9, 84, 135] have emerged as significant generalizations of fuzzy graphs. In this paper, we extend several classes of fuzzy graphs to Neutrosophic graphs and analyze their properties.

This annual review outlines the progress of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies in 2024. As human-induced CO2 emissions continued to rise, the year presented critical challenges. Notably, 2024 was the hottest year on record and the first in which global temperatures exceeded preindustrial levels by more than 1.5°C, driving intensified efforts to advance CCUS. Scientific interest in CCUS grew significantly, with the annual number of related publications increasing by 11.4% compared to 2023, reaching 53,970. The total number of operational commercial CCUS facilities also expanded, rising by 16.3% to a total of 50. In the political area, governments …
Understanding Strain-Level Dynamics In Gut Commensal-Pathogen-Host Interactions, Anna Louise Deveaux
Understanding Strain-Level Dynamics In Gut Commensal-Pathogen-Host Interactions, Anna Louise Deveaux
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The human gut microbiome is a consortium of trillions of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and promotes health under homeostatic conditions. This microbial community trains the immune system, modulates inflammation and anticancer immunity, promotes cardiometabolic health, enables nutrient extraction, and prevents pathogen overgrowth. The latter function manifests through colonization resistance, in which microbes occupy spatial and nutritional niches thereby excluding pathogens from the community entirely, and through limiting pathogen population growth if colonization occurs. These roles are facilitated by complex host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions that underlie differences in susceptibility to microbiome-mediated infectious diseases. The strain-level …
Antioxidant Activity Of Pamam Dendrimer Stabilized Ascorbic Acid, Gabriella Srikureja
Antioxidant Activity Of Pamam Dendrimer Stabilized Ascorbic Acid, Gabriella Srikureja
Honors Theses
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an essential micronutrient for human health. It acts as an enzymatic cofactor in anabolic biochemical pathways such as the synthesis of collagen, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Unfortunately, this versatility comes at the cost of a high degradation rate both in and outside of the food matrix. Previous research exploring stabilizing aqueous ascorbic acid through Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers found success in reducing the rate of degradation.
To confirm the antioxidant activity of ascorbic acid in its stabilized dendrimer complex, 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays examined via Cary 5000 UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer found that performing the DPPH assay under aqueous conditions …

Assessing A Possible Effect Of Males' Pheromones In The Phonotaxis Of Female Acheta Domesticus, Addy Rodriguez Velasco
Honors Theses
Acoustic communication in crickets is crucial for reproduction. Females respond phonotactically to the male's call. Prior research evaluating the selectivity of phonotaxis in these females, has focused on females that have been isolated from males from day 1 after metamorphosis. However, assessing phonotaxis in females raised in the presence of males, remains to be done. This study aims to investigate the phonotactic response of female Acheta domesticus that were housed with males prior to testing.
Results indicate that on average, male-exposed females respond phonotactically to a wider range of calls that those females in the control group. These results rule …

Fluorescent proteins are indispensable molecular tools for visualizing biological structures and processes, but their limited photostability restricts the duration of dynamic imaging experiments. Yellow fluorescent proteins (YFPs), in particular, photobleach rapidly. Here, we introduce mGold2s and mGold2t, YFPs with up to 25-fold greater photostability than mVenus and mCitrine, two commonly used YFPs, while maintaining comparable brightness. These variants were identified using a high-throughput pooled single-cell platform, simultaneously screening for high brightness and photostability. Compared with our previous benchmark, mGold, the mGold2 variants display a ~4-fold increase in photostability without sacrificing brightness. mGold2s and mGold2t extend imaging durations across diverse modalities, …

Accurately genotyping structural variant (SV) alleles is crucial to genomics research. We present a novel method (kanpig) for genotyping SVs that leverages variant graphs and k-mer vectors to rapidly generate accurate SV genotypes. Benchmarking against the latest SV datasets shows kanpig achieves a single-sample genotyping concordance of 82.1%, significantly outperforming existing tools, which average 66.3%. We explore kanpig's use for multi-sample projects by testing on 47 genetically diverse samples and find kanpig accurately genotypes complex loci (e.g. SVs neighboring other SVs), and produces higher genotyping concordance than other tools. Kanpig requires only 43 seconds to process a single sample's 20x …

Histone proteoforms, often presenting multiple co-occurring post-translational modifications (PTMs), are central to chromatin regulation and gene expression. A proteoform is a specific form of a protein that includes variations arising from genetic changes, alternative RNA splicing, proteolytic processing, and PTMs. Genome-indexed histone proteoforms define the histone code, influencing cellular phenotype by dictating DNA interacting partners. Understanding the dynamics of histone proteoforms is essential for elucidating chromatin-based regulatory mechanisms. Advances in middle-down and top-down proteomics enable accurate identification and quantitation of thousands of proteoforms in a single run. However, the resulting data complexity presents significant challenges for analysis and visualization. Here, …

Women have been denied equality, especially with respect to their male counterparts. Feminism is the theory that seeks to explain this by the norms, beliefs, and societal pressure by which women have been excluded. One predominant realm in which women have been excluded is politics. Although there has been a rise in female politicians across the world, they continue to face the same stereotypes as before. Thus, this study delves into the implications of having more female leaders, looking more specifically at liberal feminist international relations theory. By reviewing literature, this study finds that female leaders impact a variety of …

For years, healthcare providers have raised concerns regarding the use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, are a promising alternative to the use of antibiotics. Phages target specific bacteria and kill them. Using phages to treat bacterial infections is phage therapy. To use phages in phage therapy we need to understand phage biology fully. To advance this objective we are using a genetic screen to identify genes in phages Island3, Sbash, and EagleEye that interfere with host cell growth (cytotoxicity) and genes that protect the host from infection by another phage (defense). So far, we …

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. Understanding the genetics of individual phages is important in discovering viable candidates for phage therapy. Research reveals their complexity. There is much to learn. We used bioinformatics to better understand four phages discovered by Northwestern College students: Exploradora, IndiRoo, Red Raider, and Frizzle. We published our results in GenBank. In this poster, we will discuss notable features of each phage. Our work contributes to the future of medicine by forming a more complete understanding of phage genomes.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the follicular epithelium in the axilla, groin, peritoneum, and intertriginous areas that presents with painful nodules and abscesses. Due to the poorly understood etiology of the disorder, there are various different treatment options targeting proposed mechanisms of actions which results in a lot of trial and error to find the appropriate treatment plan. Clinicians must consider the whole patient while understanding the efficacy of the medication, possible adverse reactions, and patient compliance when creating a treatment plan, especially with the use of systematic biologics. This review aims to compare two currently FDA-approved …

Plant-based compounds have garnered interest as alternative and adjunct cancer therapies due to their anti-proliferative properties. This study examines the effects of guarana (Paullinia cupana), apple peel (Malus domestica), milk thistle (Silybum marianum), elderberry (Sambucus nigra), and berberis (Berberis vulgaris) on HeLa cell proliferation. Using in vitro CyQuant assays, we assessed their impact at varying concentrations. Results indicate that guarana and apple peel extracts may exhibit anti-proliferative activity, with guarana acting synergistically with paclitaxel. We believe the extracts are likely acting through oxidative stress modulation, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle disruption (Cavalcanti et al., 2020; Hertz, 2015; Khan et al., …

Watershed characteristics impact the habitat and water quality of stream and river ecosystems. In Northwest Iowa, lotic environments are negatively impacted by agricultural practices that result in the removal of riparian vegetation, bank erosion, sedimentation, and eutrophication. Because lotic macroinvertebrates vary in their sensitivity to these types of impacts, they can be used as indicators of habitat integrity. We explored the relative importance of habitat characteristics and allochthonous inputs by examining how macroinvertebrate colonization of leaf packs varied with leaf species, water quality, and stream bank characteristics. Leaf packs were submerged in a reach of the Floyd River at four …

Pareidolia And Creative Potential: Exploring Individual Differences In Attention To Pareidolia, Anna Prinz
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Faces are important stimuli in our environments and elicit a greater attentional response than non-faces. This is also true for pareidolic faces, which are objects in which individuals see features of faces such as eyes and mouths. Creative potential can affect pareidolic processing. Recent studies have found that perceptions of pareidolia occur more often and quickly in individuals with higher creative potential (HCP) compared to individuals with lower creative potential (LCP), which might contribute to greater distractibility for HCP individuals. End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a prominent chronic condition with dialysis as a primary treatment option. Dialysis necessitates implementation of an access point, with the gold standard being an AV fistula which possesses multiple shortcomings. Alternative access points, namely synthetic grafts, do not allow wound healing characteristics. This work aims to explore how a tissue engineered vascular graft (TEVG) may be able to address these issues by allowing a long-term access point for HD that can close puncture wounds.
