Tropical legumes such as members of the genus Stylosanthes (sty lo) contribute to the improvement of pastures in the tropics and sub-tropics. Stylosanthes is usually established from seed. In Florida, seed of Stylosanthes has to be produced and col­lected before the onset of the winter since occasional frosts can damage seed-bearing vegetation. Therefore, early maturing Stylosanthes varieties have been developed. In stylo seed collections maintained for breeding or seed exchange purposes, maintenances of seed viability is critical. Within the EEC the need to develop low cost less intensive systems of animal production has led to an increase in the importance of legumes generally, and white clover in particu­lar. Seed yield in both Lotus corniculatus L. and Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr. (syn. L. pedunculatus Cav.) is considered to be limited by the indeterminate growth habit which results in a protracted (2-4 month) flowering period (Witchwoot, 1987; Li and Hill, 1988) leading to wide variation in seed maturity and seed loss through pod shattering. Latino adults disproportionately experience financial stress, but no programs developed for Latinos comprehensively and successfully integrate financial capability and stress management approaches to address financial stress. Using a community-partnered approach, we enhanced a digital financial capability intervention with theoretically- and empirically-grounded stress management techniques. We tested whether this integrative intervention improved financial capability, self-efficacy, actions, and stress as well as sleep, a correlate of stress. A sample of 76 Latino adults (39 in the intervention group, 37 in the control group; mean age = 45, 76% female, 88% with household income below $59,999) completed the three-month randomized waitlist-control trial. Self-directed learning enables students to take charge of their educational journey by selecting their own paths, thereby fostering intrinsic motivation. Traditional educational models often rely on extrinsic motivators like grades and rewards, whereas self-directed approaches emphasize personal satisfaction and curiosity. Review of existing research highlights how extrinsic rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation, leading to decreased academic performance and well-being. Herein we also present practical examples from classroom settings, demonstrating how real-world applications and student-led investigations can enhance engagement and learning outcomes. Background: Millions of Americans are diagnosed and suffer with chronic pain everyday. Patients with chronic pain typically require frequent and routine healthcare visits to manage many symptoms. This scholarly project evaluated individuals who lack health care accessibility and are currently homeless individuals with chronic pain. Methods: The scholarly project was conducted over three weeks with twenty consistent participants participating in reflexology sessions for their chronic pain. This thesis investigates trade-offs between signal quality and data coverage in photoplethysmographic (PPG) heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring using wrist-worn devices. The goal was to evaluate whether wrist placement and signal processing techniques can improve measurement reliability in real-world conditions. Data was collected from healthy participants wearing smartwatches on both wrists during rest and a structured math task introducing natural wrist movement. Three distinct processing methodologies were compared, including a proposed Rolling-Standardized Derivative (RSD) approach. Results showed that while HRV signals from both wrists were highly correlated at rest, motion caused a measurable drop in signal quality and inter-wrist agreement, …

Hepatic steatosis and iron overload are common manifestations of diffuse liver disease. They can cause lipotoxicity and iron toxicity respectively via oxidative hepatocellular injury and can lead to progressive fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually, liver failure. Over the past two decades, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a non-invasive tool to diagnose steatosis and iron overload. Introduction: Half of undergraduate students are employed, meaning they must balance work with academics, physical activity (PA), and personal responsibilities. This study examines the potential negative impact of employment on PA, academic performance, and quality of life (QOL) among college students. Methods: The cross-sectional survey comprised 125 Bellarmine University students (Age 21.07 ± 3.40; 52% female, 48% male). Measures included the RAND SF-36 for QOL, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and a custom academic and employment questionnaire. Discrimination has profoundly shaped the lives of individuals within disadvantaged communities, but its impact on mental and physical health has often been overlooked. In this project, I review literature on perceived discrimination based on immigrant status and its effects on psychological and physical health and examine a potential mediator and moderator of these relationships. Specifically, the relationships between immigration-based discrimination and both mental health and physical health may be mediated by perceived stress, meaning that discrimination may lead to higher stress levels, which results in poorer health outcomes. Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that disproportionately affects immigrant single mothers in the United States, whose risk is heightened by unique vulnerabilities. The interplay between acculturation, social support, and economic burden in this population is underexplored. This quantitative, cross-sectional study examined the relationship between various factors and depression using 2020–2022 National Health Interview Survey data. BACKGROUND: At least 37 % emergency department (ED) patients are discharged without a definitive diagnosis, resulting in diagnostic uncertainty. Transitions of care are high-risk periods for patient safety, especially for patients discharged with diagnostic uncertainty. Effective communication between clinicians and patients improves these care transitions. Previous research developed tools to support high quality discharge in the setting of diagnostic uncertainty, including: a communication checklist, a physician training program, and a patient-facing information sheet.

Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to explore effective engagement strategies that some managers of medium and large companies use to increase job satisfaction within virtual teams. This thesis reviews the development of narrative and systematic methods of argumentative legitimation in the Western tradition of philosophy from its conception until the present day. Utilizing both primary sources from central figures in key movements within this development process and supplementary secondary sources, this analysis notes which systems were used as appeals to higher authority and the trends in the adoption and transformation of new models. 1. We aimed to elucidate potential methylation, proteomic, and metabolomic mechanisms by which APOL1 variants may be linked to kidney disease.

2. We report distinct methylation profiling between APOL1 risk allele carriers and noncarriers, many near APOL gene family.

3. We report higher APOL1 protein and lower C18:1 cholesteryl ester in two risk allele carriers.

Background: The APOL1 high-risk haplotype has been associated with CKD and the deterioration of kidney function, particularly in populations with West African ancestry.
