COVID-19 has put immense pressure on healthcare facilities, especially in managing patients with comorbidity. This study addressed the association between two important coinfections, congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and their effect on hospital length of stay (LOS) among COVID-19 patients. The study also explored the predictive role of the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) in prolonged hospitalization, also considering the influence of age and race. This study applied the Biopsychosocial Model and Chronic Care Model (CCM) to examine health outcomes and resource use. A retrospective cohort research design was used to examine medical records of …

Characterization Of Long-Noncoding Rnas In Prostate And Pancreatic Cancer Through Single Cell Transcriptomics, Debanjan Saha
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is a subtype of prostate cancer that develops after metastasis and resistance to hormone therapy, thereby carrying a poor prognosis. Likewise, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal malignancies due to its propensity to present at advanced, unresectable stages in patients. Recent genomic studies have identified molecular features of mCRPC and PDAC, such as the existence of mutations in key driver genes, the extensive transcriptomic intra-tumoral heterogeneity, the role of regulatory elements in dictating driver gene expression, mechanisms of treatment resistance, and the interactions with the immunosuppressive and stromal tumor- microenvironment …

Here, we present a multi-omics study of type 2 diabetes and quantitative blood lipid and lipoprotein traits conducted to date in Hispanic/Latino populations (nmax = 63,184). We conduct a meta-analysis of 16 type 2 diabetes and 19 lipid trait GWAS, identifying 20 genome-wide significant loci for type 2 diabetes, including one novel locus and novel signals at two known loci, based on fine-mapping. We also identify sixty-one genome-wide significant loci across the lipid/lipoprotein traits, including nine novel loci, and novel signals at 19 known loci through fine-mapping. Next, we analyze genetically regulated expression, perform Mendelian randomization, and analyze association with …

Rivers produce and decompose large amounts of carbon globally due, in part, to high rates of gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER), collectively known as ecosystem metabolism. Water temperature is a major driver of ecosystem metabolism, and in-stream temperatures are increasing globally, including extreme temperature events called heatwaves. This study used published estimates of daily GPP and ER from 48 stream and river locations in the United States to examine how ecosystem metabolism responds to riverine heatwaves. During low-severity heatwaves, GPP and ER increase proportionally, resulting in no net difference. However, during severe and extreme heatwaves, GPP declined …

Obesity is a major public health crisis associated with high mortality rates. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) investigating body mass index (BMI) have largely relied on imputed data from European individuals. This study leveraged whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from 88,873 participants from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program, of which 51% were of non-European population groups. We discovered 18 BMI-associated signals (P < 5 × 10

Fulltime Faculty Perspectives On Engagement In Distributed Leadership At A Technical College, Jacinda Halene Lay
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed in this basic qualitative study was that fulltime college faculty was not sufficiently engaged in distributed leadership at a technical college in a western state. The purpose of this study was to explore fulltime college faculty members’ perspective about their engagement in distributed leadership at a technical college in a western state. The research questions explored how fulltime faculty described their engagement in, and knowledge of, faculty leadership, at a technical college, and recommendations for increasing engagement. Using Spillane’s leader plus paradigm as the conceptual framework, semistructured interviews of 14 purposively sampled fulltime college faculty …

The rapid development of the mining industry has resulted in an increasing amount of toxic waste materials in the environment, including mercury (Hg). A reliable chemical sensor is needed to detect the presence of mercury. One of the chemical sensors that is starting to be widely developed is plasmonic film. This research aims to determine the characteristics and validity of plasmonic nata de coco-copper nanoparticle (CuNPs) films for cuvette type sensor chips in the rapid detection of Hg metal using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. This research began with the preparation of a bioreductor from red dragon fruit peel extract, green synthesis of …

Nutrient enrichment typically causes local plant diversity declines. A common but untested expectation is that nutrient enrichment also reduces variation in nutrient conditions among localities and selects for a smaller pool of species, causing greater diversity declines at larger than local scales and thus biotic homogenization. Here we apply a framework that links changes in species richness across scales to changes in the numbers of spatially restricted and widespread species for a standardized nutrient addition experiment across 72 grasslands on six continents. Overall, we find proportionally similar species loss at local and larger scales, suggesting similar declines of spatially restricted …

Dissecting the preneoplastic disease states' biological mechanisms that precede tumorigenesis can lead to interventions that can slow down disease progression and/or mitigate disease-related comorbidities. Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) cannot be cured by currently available pharmacological therapies, which fail to eradicate aberrant hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), most of which are mutated by the time of diagnosis. Here, we sought to elucidate how MDS HSCs evade immune surveillance and expand in patients with clonal cytopenias of undetermined significance (CCUS), the pre-malignant stage of MDS. We used multi-omic single-cell approaches and functional in vitro studies to show that immune escape at disease initiation is …

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Maladaptive reward-seeking behavior can be driven by one of several different components including excessive craving elicited by cues that predict rewards, failing to effortfully pursue rewards when it is beneficial to do so, and compulsively seeking rewards when it is no longer advantageous to do so. This thesis includes experiments focusing on these three different components of reward-seeking behavior to better understand how reward-seeking can become maladaptive. First, we wanted to examine the role that sex plays in the acquisition and compulsiveness of sign-tracking behavior in the Long Evans rat, a strain that is commonly used as the background for …

The discovery of histone H3 copper reductase activity provides a novel metabolic framework for understanding the functions of core histone residues, which, unlike N-terminal residues, have remained largely unexplored. We previously demonstrated that histone H3 cysteine 110 (H3C110) contributes to cupric (Cu2+) ion binding and its reduction to the cuprous (Cu1+) form. However, this residue is absent in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, raising questions about its evolutionary and functional significance. Here, we report that H3C110 has been lost in many fungal lineages despite near-universal conservation across eukaryotes. Introduction of H3C110 into S. cerevisiae increased intracellular Cu1+ levels and ameliorated the iron …

STEM fields face persistent challenges with diversity, equity, and inclusion. For example, while women make up 56% of students enrolled in undergraduate degrees, women account for only 22% of the students in engineering programs. This number drops even further in the workforce, where women comprise only 15.9% of the engineering industry (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024). Consequently, the industry of equity-focused coding education has grown rapidly, leading to the rise of coding boot camps, workshops, and community-based coding education specifically designed to increase the participation of women and underrepresented programmers in tech (Rea, 2022; Jabbari, 2023). While the impacts …

Intersectional Experiences Of Stem Students With Disabilities, Sandy Heath, Jade Metzger, Tarah Loy-Ashe
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities experience barriers to accessing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers during academic preparation for these careers. This pilot project explored the experiences of postsecondary STEM students who have a disability. The six students interviewed gave their insights into the need to further diversify who has access to STEM careers by describing that cultural and structural barriers posed more of a barrier than the course content during their STEM education. Academic preparation often starts in early childhood education with exposure to STEM topics and continues through postsecondary education. The implications impact both the individual student and society. …

Nanoparticles were prepared by the laboratory thermal method from copper, magnesium, and zinc oxides. Different nanoparticles were added to epoxy at weight fractions of (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) wt. %. The structural results from X-ray diffraction showed the appearance of epoxy in a random system, and when reinforced with nanopowders at higher addition ratios, we find the appearance of nanoparticles in a clear crystalline form, while the SEM results showed an increase in consistency and homogeneity with each increase in the proportions of nanoparticles, which appeared clearly during the EDX examination. The hardness of Shore type D was …

Apraxia of Speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder that causes difficulty planning and coordinating the movements necessary for speech. This study uses lesion network mapping to identify the neural connections of AOS by tracing lesion data and analyzing their functional connectivity patterns. Our data indicates strong connectivity between the left primary motor cortex and right premotor cortex. The findings of the left primary motor cortex differ from most AOS research but still correlate with regional functions found in healthy populations. However, results related to the right motor cortex were much less expected, and suggested a larger, understudied role in …

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting nearly 10 mil- lion people worldwide, and for which no cure is currently known. Mutations in the Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene, age, as well as environmental factors such as neurotoxin exposure and stress, are known to increase the risk of developing the disease in humans. To investigate the role of a specific Asian variant of the LRRK2 gene to induce susceptibility to stress and trigger PD phenotypes with time, knock-in (KI) mice bearing the human LRRK2 R1628P risk variant have been generated and studied from 2 to 16 months of …

Voices of Service Symposium
Behavioral healthcare engagement is low for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) even in systems where high-quality evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) are available. Mindfulness based interventions (MBI) may mitigate avoidance in treatment through self-regulation and non-judgmental self-awareness. This study analyzed treatment engagement and service utilization of Veterans engaged in a randomized clinical trial MBI for PTSD (A Primary Care Brief Mindfulness Training (PCBMT)) to assess its impact on behavioral healthcare engagement in populations with PTSD.

Psychology Student Publications
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder that causes depression in seasonal patterns, with winter being the most common. College students are particularly vulnerable to SAD due to factors like relocation, young age, and high social demand. The symptoms of seasonal effective disorder can be detrimental to a student’s career, and without specific knowledge of the causes and treatments for SAD, it is difficult to control the disorder.
