Dietary Preferences And Food-Seeking Behavior Of Discoid Cockroaches, Blaberus Discoidalis, Claire O'Brien, Darcci Freie, Robert Larson
2025 Student Academic Showcase
Blaberus discoidalis, commonly known as discoid cockroaches, are native to South American tropics where they consume leaf litter and decaying organic matter on forest floors. This experiment expands upon previous research concerning the diet preference of discoid cockroaches based on their loitering time when presented with different food types. Utilizing their preferred foods, peanuts, leaf litter, and banana, this experiment aims to determine how much of each food is being consumed to further support their diet preferences.

Gibberellin is a hormone in plants that affects growth. Gibberellin works to begin germination in grass seeds by stimulating amylase production. It may be possible to use gibberellin to understand why different millet variants exhibit dwarf growth. We grew and treated 4 different dwarf variants with a gibberellic acid solution to identify the ability of each plant to utilize gibberellin. We compared the growth in millet grown both with and without the solution to see the effects of gibberellin on each variant. Dwarf millets may not produce their own gibberellin, or they may lack the receptors to utilize gibberellin. Our …

The Conditioning Of Reservoir Computing And Ng-Rc For Forecasting And The Effects Of Temporal Overparameterization, Daniel Jensen
The Conditioning Of Reservoir Computing And Ng-Rc For Forecasting And The Effects Of Temporal Overparameterization, Daniel Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Reservoir computing and "Next-generation reservoir computing" built on nonlinear vector autoregression are algorithms for predicting time series given past observations. Both algorithms have been successful in predicting some chaotic dynamical systems, but this success is not theoretically well understood. This paper considers the conditioning of both algorithms and the nature of the solutions found. With either algorithm, the least squares problem which is solved to give parameters as a function of the time series data is ill-conditioned, leading to parameter non-identifiability. Both algorithms fall into the class of "sloppy models." Standard practice to regularize either algorithm includes a bias towards …
Surface-Texture Fabrication Of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Using Focused Ion-Beam Machining, Kameron M. Woodruff
Surface-Texture Fabrication Of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Using Focused Ion-Beam Machining, Kameron M. Woodruff
Theses and Dissertations
Focused ion-beam machining (FIBM), a precise form of micro-machining, was tested for feasibility in the manufacturing of microscopic dimples in zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), a wear resistant ceramic used in artificial joint replacements. The interaction between the ion-beam and the ceramic was characterized in terms of material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness, and notable irregularities (e.g. pitting, steps at vertical faces). These characteristics were used to design and machine patterns of microscopic dimples for tribological testing. The dimple size and pattern area were limited due to a slow MRR and high cost of milling. No significant difference in the coefficient of …

Identification of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutations has uncovered the crucial role of metabolism in gliomagenesis. Oncolytic herpes virus (oHSV) initiates direct tumor debulking by tumor lysis and activates anti-tumor immunity, however, little is known about the role of glioma metabolism in determining oHSV efficacy. Here we identify that oHSV rewires central carbon metabolism increasing glucose utilization towards oxidative phosphorylation and shuttling glutamine towards reductive carboxylation in IDH wildtype glioma. The switch in metabolism results in increased lipid synthesis and cellular ROS. PKC induces ACSL4 in oHSV treated cells leading to lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis. Ferroptosis is critical to launch an …

A Population Study Of The Freshwater Turtles Of The Recently Expanded Lake Hydaway In Campbell County, Virginia, Joshua Sorenson
Senior Honors Theses
Freshwater turtles are an important part of the ecological systems in central Virginia. At the recently expanded Lake Hydaway, there are several turtle species for which their population characteristics were unknown, especially the prolific Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta) and Red-bellied Cooter (Pseudemys rubriventris). For five weeks, the lake was surveyed for turtles using hoop nets, and the turtles were marked and measured. Population characteristics such as carapace length and sex ratio for the Eastern Painted Turtle and Red-bellied Cooter were calculated, as well as population estimates for those two species. The Red-eared Slider ( …

African American Adolescent Depressive Symptoms And Caregiver Perceptions, Katerina Marroquin
African American Adolescent Depressive Symptoms And Caregiver Perceptions, Katerina Marroquin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American adolescents with untreated mental health problems can have symptoms of depression. Depressive symptoms can persist in adulthood if untreated. Caregiver recognition is the strongest predictor of adolescent behaviors and depressive symptom outcomes. Caregivers can identify depressive symptoms in African American adolescents by focusing on met and unmet needs. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to ask about caregiver perceptions of African American adolescent depressive symptoms with focus on physiological needs, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization. The theoretical framework for this study is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Data analysis was conducted using NVivo to enhance the interpretation …

The Relationship Between Climate Change Awareness And Mental Health Among Adults In The United States, Stanley Nkemjika
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding the connection between climate change awareness and overall well-being is crucial, particularly regarding its impact on the environment and mental health. However, there is a need for more research on this topic, especially within the American context. The mental health implications of climate change are not yet fully understood, and there is a gap in the literature. This gap was addressed by exploring climate change awareness effects on mental health among U.S. adults. The social ecological model provided a framework to examine the impact of climate change awareness on mental health, considering individual, interpersonal, community, and societal factors. This …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Numerous studies have documented the involvement of p130Cas (Crk-associated substrate) in a wide range of cellular processes across different types of cells. These processes encompass cell transformation, the connection between the extracellular matrix and the actin cytoskeleton, cell migration and invasion, and cardiovascular development. Moreover, p130Cas has been associated with the regulation of various physiological processes, including mammary, bone, brain, muscle, and liver homeostasis. The diverse functions of p130Cas can be attributed to its possession of multiple protein-protein interaction domains, which sets it apart as a unique class of adaptor protein. It is well established that p130Cas interacts critically with …

High-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP) is a recently described primary brain tumor and the first requiring a specific methylation pattern for diagnosis, as its histologic features are often compatible with other tumors such as glioblastoma (GBM). Characterized by molecular alterations in CDKN2A/B, NF1, BRAF, FGFR1, and ATRX, they may be located anywhere in the CNS but show a predilection for the posterior fossa. Reports are limited to retrospective case series, and the standard of care is not yet established. We performed a retrospective review of electronic medical records of all patients with HGAP at our institution. Records were queried …

Induction Of Cardiac Fibulin-4 Protects Against Pressure Overload-Induced Cardiac Hypertrophy And Heart Failure, E D Van Deel, C M Halabi, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The prevailing view of fibulin-4 deficient mice is that the cardiac phenotype is the result of aortic and/or valvular disease. In the present study, we have tested whether the cardiac phenotype is, at least in part, the consequence of primary cardiac effects of fibulin-4. We have found fibulin-4 expression to be activated throughout the myocardium in wildtype (fibulin-4

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) based gene editing has emerged as an invaluable tool for advances in human health. Through the simple design of single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs), CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) are guided to make edits within genomes with relative ease compared to previous gene editing techniques. The development of this technology has allowed for improved treatment of diseases such as Sickle Cell Anemia and Leber Congenital Amaurosis. Its usage extends further than just disease treatments, as seen by the ability to decrease malaria transmission rates and increase nutritional value in food. Despite justifiable concerns with the possibility of …

Pursuing Crispr-Cas9 As A Future Treatment For Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, Lauren Cote
Academic Festival
Duchenne’s muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular degenerative disorder that causes skeletal muscle degeneration in young boys and continues until the succumb cardiac to cardiac or respiratory failure around 30 years of age. DMD is caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene that leads to no transcription and translation of the dystrophin protein, an important cytoskeletal protein that stabilizes the muscle fibers during contractions. The two current treatments for this disease are steroid treatments to slow down the muscle degeneration and morpholino antisense oligomers that attempt to restore the dystrophin protein in the muscle fibers but is normally not …

1.1 The American Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) is an important species in the ecosystem on the Eastern coast of the United States. Horseshoe crabs in high densities serve as a foundational species, increasing local biodiversity by providing food to many other organisms. The population of horseshoe crabs in the Long Island Sound has been declining in recent decades due to overharvesting, pollution, and loss of shoreline habitat. Additionally, horseshoe crabs are susceptible to gill parasites such as the limulus leech (Bdelloura candida). Horseshoe crabs were studied between 2021 and 2023 along the Connecticut (CT) coast to determine what factors influence …
Identifying Molecular Components Of A Fertility Pathway, Zoë Galvin
Identifying Molecular Components Of A Fertility Pathway, Zoë Galvin
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Reproductive failure is a common problem which deeply impacts those affected. Many will, unfortunately, never learn any potential cause for this issue. Treatment for reproductive complications are limited due to the lack of understanding of the molecular pathways associated with fertility, especially due to the limitations placed on studies focusing on reproductive health. Model organisms can thus be used in order to gain a better understanding of the pathways that modulate fertility in multicellular organisms. C. elegans are a common model organism notable for their large brood size, short lifespan, and affordable maintenance. They also share much of their genetic …
