The Commodification Of International Adoptees Through A Conflict Lens, Andrew S. Antcliffe
The Commodification Of International Adoptees Through A Conflict Lens, Andrew S. Antcliffe
Honors Theses
The practice of international adoption, also known as intercountry adoption (ICA), can be defined as a transference of a child from international borders (Ma, 2017). International, also known as intercountry, adoption is a process that is widely characterized to provide the creation of families and humanitarian aid to orphaned children. It is most often facilitated by privatized intermediaries, predominantly facilitating the transference of children from non-Western nations to Western ones. Adopting abroad has largely been framed as a practice of humanitarianism, yet instances of corruption, neglect, and abuse have shown a different nature of the system. Dominant source countries, such …
Biomimetic Design Of Mechanochromic Single-Chain Nanoparticle Polymer Networks, Samuel Robinson
Biomimetic Design Of Mechanochromic Single-Chain Nanoparticle Polymer Networks, Samuel Robinson
Honors Theses
Hydrogels are a class of polymer networks that show promise in many biomedical applications but are typically limited in use due to their brittle nature. Synthesizing hydrogel networks that are comparable to biological materials has long been an area of interest. In this study, we are working to create a polymer network inspired by the muscular protein, titin. Titin can unfold under mechanical tension, releasing stored length, making the muscle material extensible and durable. To mimic this behavior, we propose creating a polymer network with similar stored length using single chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) cross-linked with phenolphthalein (PP) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). …
Prevalence Of Potentially Pathogenic Bacteria In Showers At A Long-Term Nursing Care Facility, Joseph Caleb Kulon
Prevalence Of Potentially Pathogenic Bacteria In Showers At A Long-Term Nursing Care Facility, Joseph Caleb Kulon
Honors Theses
Pathogenic bacteria on environmental surfaces in nursing homes may contribute to the growing burden of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), particularly as the U.S. population ages and more individuals transition into long-term care. In this study, 70 swab samples were collected from five community shower rooms at a nursing home over three sampling trips. Five common shower surfaces were sampled: the floor drain, shower bench, faucet/valves, shower curtain, and grab bars. Samples were processed in the UTC CIDC microbiology lab and inoculated onto four selective and differential media: Hardy CHROM MRSA agar (for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA] and S. pseudintermedius [SIM]), mannitol …
Observations Of Silicified Stromatolites From The Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician Of Adairsville, Georgia, Lyra C. Pala
Observations Of Silicified Stromatolites From The Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician Of Adairsville, Georgia, Lyra C. Pala
Honors Theses
This study describes and analyzes silicified stromatolite samples collected near Adairsville, Georgia, from Cambrian–Ordovician system rocks likely belonging to the Copper Ridge Dolomite of the Knox Group. Using the classification system outlined by Grey and Awramik (2020), the stromatolites were systematically described at the macro-, meso-, and microscales. The samples display two primary mesostructural morphologies—branched-bifurcate and layered-linked columnar forms—with non-couplet lamination, smooth to wavy laminae, moderate to high synoptic relief, and alternating microlaminae textures. Unlike previous studies of stromatolites from nearby Murray County, Georgia the stromatolites samples from Adairsville, Georgia preserve well-defined mesoscale and microscale lamination visible in thin section …

Comparison Of Rt-Qpcr And Rt-Ddpcr On Assessing Model Virus In Wastewater, Wafa Youssfi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is an increasing demand for quantifying viral loads in diverse wastewater systems using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This study evaluates the performance of two commonly used workflows: reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and reverse transcription droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) in wastewater. We compared the two methods by measuring the viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) of a model virus Phi6 in samples collected from various treatment stages at the Westside Wastewater Treatment Facility in Fayetteville, AR. RNA was extracted from real and synthetic wastewater samples and analyzed in parallel using both RT-qPCR and RT-ddPCR. Findings reveal that both methods demonstrated similar …

Evaluation Of Avenanthramide-A As A Skin Penetration Enhancer: In Vitro And In Vivo Testing On Permeation Of Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate And Diclofenac Sodium From Topical Gels, Darshil Dhiren Shah
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Topical and transdermal drug delivery are favored to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients directly to the skin as an alternative to oral administration for systemic effects. In either case, the active molecules must cross the stratum corneum and epidermis to reach the site of action. The stratum corneum serves as a primary barrier limiting compounds from fully penetrating the skin. Therefore, it is necessary to add penetration enhancers to topical formulations to enhance drug delivery through the skin. Often, penetration enhancers are also irritant to the skin. Earlier research in our pharmaceutical laboratory showed that an addition of colloidal oatmeal, produced …
Beatrice Wanjiku: A Portrait Of Human Vulnerability, Suzanne R. Vuoncino
Beatrice Wanjiku: A Portrait Of Human Vulnerability, Suzanne R. Vuoncino
Theses
Abstract artist Beatrice Wanjiku uses an anatomical composition to illustrate a sense of vulnerability, an element of human identity, in relation to one’s social environment. Going beyond the skin, Untitled excavates the mental and emotional aspects of the human condition and gives expression to experience. By observing her figural composition, examining the foundation of identity theory, and interpreting her use of abstraction, I will describe how Untitled speaks to a message of connectivity through a portrait of human vulnerability. This thesis argues that one’s environment affects the individual and exemplifies how vulnerability is seen as a pervasive aspect of human …

Ghrelin And Decision-Making: Exploring Its Role In Food Reward, Novelty-Seeking, And Cost Valuation, Serina A. Batson
Ghrelin And Decision-Making: Exploring Its Role In Food Reward, Novelty-Seeking, And Cost Valuation, Serina A. Batson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
When low energy levels are detected, Ghrelin, a peptide hormone, is produced in the fundus of the stomach. Referred to as the "hunger hormone", Ghrelin is traditionally associated with increased food intake and blood sugar levels. A key modulator in the gut-brain interaction, Ghrelin's growth hormone secretagogue receptor can be found widely across the cortico-striosomal circuit. Critical for decision-making, Ghrelin-based manipulation of this circuit can directly affect reward and cost valuation. While Ghrelin is uniformly considered to increase the valuation of food-based rewards, little research has explored its impact on non-food-based rewards or its effects on cost valuation. Therefore, to …

A Review Of Praziquantel Resistance In Schistosomes And The Future Of Schistosomiasis Control, Gabriela G. Eastham
A Review Of Praziquantel Resistance In Schistosomes And The Future Of Schistosomiasis Control, Gabriela G. Eastham
Senior Honors Theses
Schistosomiasis is a group of both acute and chronic parasitic trematode infections of the genus Schistosoma. Praziquantel (PZQ) has been the drug of choice to treat schistosomiasis for decades. Though it is effective against all three clinically relevant species, heavy reliance on PZQ has led to concerns of schistosome resistance, especially in areas that have implemented this drug in mass drug administration (MDA) programs. Although there is currently insufficient evidence to conclude that schistosomes are becoming resistant to PZQ on a large scale, other control methods are a necessity to best treat and eliminate schistosomiasis. This article summarizes the …
To Heal A Mind: A Comparison Of Functional And Conventional Treatments In Major Depressive Disorder, Gillian Chambers
To Heal A Mind: A Comparison Of Functional And Conventional Treatments In Major Depressive Disorder, Gillian Chambers
Senior Honors Theses
Incidence of major depressive disorder is increasing year over year, with little able to be done to halt the spread of the condition. However, there are many treatment possibilities considered unconventional by the healthcare system. This thesis examines the respective benefits and risks, in comparison to one another, between conventional pharmacological treatment and functional, holistic treatment of depression. This was done via integrative review of available clinical literature, synthesizing evidence on both conventional and functional treatments for depression, as dictated by Whittemore and Knafl (2005). Exploratory search methods revealed 758 records fulfilling inclusion criteria, which were screened and narrowed down …

Deep Learning In Lung Cancer Pre- And Post-Radiation Therapy: Diagnosis Of Malignancy And Radiation-Induced Lung Injury From 3d X-Ray Ct., Benjamin Peter Veasey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with early detection and accurate diagnosis being critical for improving patient outcomes. Additionally, the progression of Radiation-Induced Lung Injury (RILI) following Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for lung cancer presents a significant diagnostic challenge. This dissertation addresses these challenges by developing deep learning-based diagnostic tools for both pre-treatment lung nodule malignancy classification and post-treatment RILI identification using 3D X-ray CT imaging. The research is divided into two primary objectives. First, for lung nodule malignancy classification, we developed a biopsy-confirmed dataset, called NLSTx, to train and evaluate deep learning models while …
Translation Of The Carcinogenic Dna Breakage-Repair Inhibition Mechanism For Hexavalent Chromium To Its Key Targets: Lung Epithelial Cells, Lung Tissue And Impacts On The Genome., Idoia Meaza Isusi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a human lung carcinogen with widespread occupational and environmental exposure. Despite the known health risks, how Cr(VI) causes lung cancer remains unclear. This dissertation investigates the mechanisms of Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. Cr(VI) causes DNA damage, specifically DNA double strand breaks, and inhibits homologous recombination repair, a high-fidelity repair pathway. Unrepaired DNA double strand breaks or those repaired through error-prone pathways, progress to chromosomal damage, and chromosome instability. The latter is a common characteristic of Cr(VI)-exposed cells, and a hallmark of lung cancer. Although the mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced …
The Effects Of Geographic Isolation And Anthropogenic Activity On The Social Behavior Of Caribbean Green Monkeys., Rose Amrhein
The Effects Of Geographic Isolation And Anthropogenic Activity On The Social Behavior Of Caribbean Green Monkeys., Rose Amrhein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeaus) arrived to the Caribbean with the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Since then, they have experienced unique environments to those of their native ranges in West Africa. Additionally, recent taxonomic changes within the genus make previous knowledge about the species hard to determine to be accurate. In this dissertation, I both assess some of the effects the island environment may have had on monkey behavior as well as build on the understanding of their vocal communication across three islands: Barbados, St. Kitts, and St. Martin. In chapter one, I investigate how human activity in Barbados affects …
Dirty Dianthus: A Review Of The Microbotryum-Dianthus Plant Pathogen System., Roxanne Kaaren Hayes
Dirty Dianthus: A Review Of The Microbotryum-Dianthus Plant Pathogen System., Roxanne Kaaren Hayes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbotryum dianthorum is a species complex of smut fungi that act as biotrophic plant pathogens of Dianthus flowering plants. This group of pathogenic fungi are situated within a larger group of fungi that act as biotrophic plant pathogens, some of which are responsible for extensive crop loss in our agricultural system. These pathogens are distinct from other Microbotryum species in their ability to infect not only a single host, but multiple hosts. Their unique ability to parasitize several plant hosts may unlock potential clues about the potential for emergent infection disease in crop systems. Previous work has established that these …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in 1995, individuals from the Sant Pere church complex in Terrassa, Spain were exhumed. Using 21 biological females and 32 biological males collectively between the Visigoth (5th – 8th centuries) and Carolingian (9th – 11th centuries) periods from this collection, this research examined the difference in osteoarthritis between estimated phenotypic sexes. For osteoarthritis to be present, an individual needed to meet one of two criteria: 1. two or more of the following was present: macroporosity, sclerotic bone, joint deformation, and marginal osteophytes, or 2. eburnation had occurred. Through employing embodiment theory, along with gender and …
Sars-Cov-2 Modulates Pla2g2d/Pgd2 Signaling To Manipulate Host Immune Response To Increase Disease Severity., Dante L. Hamiel
Sars-Cov-2 Modulates Pla2g2d/Pgd2 Signaling To Manipulate Host Immune Response To Increase Disease Severity., Dante L. Hamiel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Previous studies suggested that SARS-CoV-2 infection could cause diverse immune and metabolic dysregulations, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In addition, viruses may escape the immune response by modulating cellular metabolism, mitochondria, and protein functions indicating that immune or metabolic components may represent novel targets for anti-viral strategies. However, whether immune and metabolic disorders interact or affect each other waits to be determined. On the other hand, previous investigations identified the critical roles of a cell membrane-bound phospholipase PLA2G2D and its downstream products PGD2 in regulating the metabolism and inflammation in respiratory system. More importantly, …

Faculty Work Comprehensive List
How do we effectively and equitably place students into math classes in a way that provides them the best chance of success? As many higher education institutions veer away from placement based on standardized testing, many departments are seeking placement alternatives that will properly support students. Additionally, math placement determines not only a student’s mathematics courses but also influences their progress in related fields, including physics, chemistry, engineering, and more. This paper will describe three different existing placement systems at each of our liberal arts institutions as well as the affordances and constraints of each approach. Further, we analyze data …
Particle Deflection In A Macroscale Ultrasonic Angled Wave Device, Nicholas Rivet, Bart Lipkens, Walter Presz
Particle Deflection In A Macroscale Ultrasonic Angled Wave Device, Nicholas Rivet, Bart Lipkens, Walter Presz
Student Work - College of Engineering
Macroscale bulk ultrasonic standing waves oriented at an angle relative to a fluid velocity field offer a method for sensitive particle separation. We have previously reported on the theoretical development of such a system (Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics Vol. 30, 045004 (2017), https:// doi.org/10.1121/2.0000652). Particle deflection is uniquely defined by two parameters, i.e., the non- dimensional ratio of the acoustic radiation force to the fluid drag force exerted on the particle and the angle of the standing wave with respect to the fluid velocity. Here, we highlight the development and testing of a thirty-degree acoustofluidic angled wave device with …
Assessing The Role Of Dna Modifications (5mc And 5hmc) In Gene Regulation And Prostate Cancer Tumorigenesis, Shelby Edwards
Assessing The Role Of Dna Modifications (5mc And 5hmc) In Gene Regulation And Prostate Cancer Tumorigenesis, Shelby Edwards
Master’s Theses - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
Despite available treatments, prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer related morbidity and mortality in the United States. Thus, there is a need for more targeted and efficacious therapies. Epigenetic DNA modifications, such as methylation (5mC) and hydroxymethylation (5hmC), whose normal patterns are disrupted in cancer, can influence gene regulation. Although the role of loss or gain of 5mC in cancer is better established, the function of 5hmC in cancer progression is much less clear. The use of epigenetic modifying agents, particularly Ten Eleven Translocation (TET) enzyme inhibitors, may prove useful in preventing the creation of 5hmC and restoring …

Does language matter in achieving higher scores in school? Do international standardized tests measure students speaking different languages equally? We study whether a language students speak affects their academic achievement. Understanding this research might also help construct a format for standardized testing. It might also help to build a curriculum for bilingual students and facilitate foreign language learning in schools. We analyze the role of institutional factors and the role of linguistics in student’s performance. To do so, we use PISA 2018 data and linear regression models for both the whole sample of students in each country and first and …
Imagining Indigeneity: The Construction Of The Indio In The Work Of José Carlos Mariátegui, Shaylee Luedders
Imagining Indigeneity: The Construction Of The Indio In The Work Of José Carlos Mariátegui, Shaylee Luedders
History Undergraduate Honors Theses
The main focus of José Carlos Mariátegui’s (1894-1930) abundant literature was the adaptation of Marxist theory to the particular needs of Latin America. He is often considered the first major Latin American Marxist and played a key role in the history of leftism in the region. Among his most significant contributions to Marxism in Latin America is his incorporation of indigenous populations into a Marxist framework. He believed that, due to their history of communal ownership under the Inca, a “communist spirit” was retained in Peru’s indigenous population. In his writing about Peru’s potentially communist future, Mariátegui often touched on …
