Flying Safe: Reducing Bird Strikes At Northern Illinois University, Stacey Marcinkowski
Honors Capstones
Bird-window collisions are a major source of avian mortality, particularly in urban environments where glass structures are prevalent. At Northern Illinois University (NIU), systematic monitoring conducted between 2019 and 2024 revealed Montgomery Hall to be the building with the highest incidence of bird strikes. This project aimed to test the effectiveness of a cost efficient bird strike mitigation strategy using grease marker frit dots on Montgomery Hall’s skybridge windows. We applied white dots spaced four inches apart and compared strike data collected during fall migration seasons before (2018–2022) and after (2024) dot application. While limited to one post-treatment season, results …
Acetaminophen’S Contribution To Autism And Adhd From A Mitochondrial Perspective, Stephanie G. Chu
Acetaminophen’S Contribution To Autism And Adhd From A Mitochondrial Perspective, Stephanie G. Chu
Senior Honors Theses
The CDC reported that one in 36 children were identified with autism in 2020, a 22% increase from 2018 and a 98% increase from 2010. Simultaneously, ADHD diagnoses increased 36% from 2003 to 2016-2019. Despite this surge, their etiologies remain largely unknown. However, numerous studies document higher incidences of mitochondrial abnormalities in affected individuals. Additionally, acetaminophen has been implicated in these disorders in longitudinal studies and murine models. This paper is a compilation of literature aiming to present a novel theoretical framework for acetaminophen-induced mitochondrial damage in utero. It focuses on a toxic metabolite of acetaminophen, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine, and its …

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Hearing Education Project For Patients And Their Care Partners, Jennifer Mahoney
Doctoral Projects
Hearing loss is a significant communication issue that impacts relationships, safety, and mental and physical health. There is an increased risk of dementia as well as increased mortality associated with untreated hearing loss. Hearing aids are one of the main treatments for hearing loss, but they are frequently not used. Cognitive impairment, osteoarthritis of the hands, cost and complexity are some of the reasons that hearing aids do not get utilized. But research has shown that involving family members and care partners in trainings on how to use hearing aids may increase use of them. The goal of this project …

In this study, a vanadyl phthalocyanine was synthesized and characterized using XRD, FTIR, and XPS, confirming the successful metalation of the phthalocyanine ring. XRD analysis showed the vanadyl phthalocyanine crystallized in the P-1 crystal lattice, with unit cell parameters a = 12.058 Å, b = 12.598 Å, and c = 8.719 Å, and the lattice angels were 96.203°, 94.941°, and 68.204°. FTIR spectroscopy supported the metalation by the disappearance of the N-H stretch of the non-metalated phthalocyanine. The vanadyl phthalocyanine was tested as a heterogenous catalyst for the conversion of fructose into methyl levulinate in H2SO4–methanol and HCl–methanol systems. The …

Can't Women Kill?: Women, Violence, And Power In Nazi Germany, Kelly Ornelas
Can't Women Kill?: Women, Violence, And Power In Nazi Germany, Kelly Ornelas
History Theses
This thesis examines the role of women as perpetrators of violence within the Nazi apparatus, challenging traditional narratives that depict them as passive supporters or victims of their circumstances. Through a Foucauldian analysis, it explores how ordinary German women were conditioned by Nazi propaganda, manipulated discourses, and social expectations to engage in acts of brutality, often without direct orders. Case studies, including Erna Petri and Ilse Koch illustrate how women actively participated in the mechanisms of state violence without rank or official status, raising critical questions about complicity and moral responsibility. This study interrogates the bounds of guilt, arguing that …
First-Order And Second-Order Adjoint Method And Stochastic Approximation For Inverse Problems, Adrian Heldt
First-Order And Second-Order Adjoint Method And Stochastic Approximation For Inverse Problems, Adrian Heldt
Theses
We present a unified framework for estimating stochastic parameters in general variational problems. This nonlinear inverse problem is formulated as a stochastic optimization problem using the output least-squares (OLS) objective, which minimizes the discrepancy between observed data and the computed solution. A key challenge in OLS-based formulations is the efficient computation of first- and second-order derivatives of the OLS functional, which depend on the corresponding derivatives of the parameter-to-solution map—often costly and difficult to evaluate, especially in stochastic settings. To address this, we develop a rigorous computational approach based on first- and second-order adjoint methods for inverse problems governed by …
Development Of A Miniaturized Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (Ecmo) Device On A Microfluidic Platform, Nayeem Imtiaz
Development Of A Miniaturized Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (Ecmo) Device On A Microfluidic Platform, Nayeem Imtiaz
Theses
This research investigates the design, performance, and optimization of blood-contacting microfluidic medical devices, with each aim contributing to a broader understanding of how engineering choices influence hemocompatibility and oxygen transfer. Collectively, the findings from Aims 1A–2B offer integrated strategies to develop safer, more effective microfluidic systems for ECMO and dialysis. Aim 1A assessed hemolysis across device geometries using computational and experimental methods. All designs showed low device-induced hemolysis (< 2 ppm), validating their hemocompatibility. However, Power-Law models frequently overpredicted hemolysis, indicating a need for refined parameters tailored to microfluidic flow conditions. Aim 1B demonstrated the effectiveness of thrombosis assay techniques in evaluating clot formation in microfluidic device geometries. Results showed that geometry and local shear patterns strongly influence thrombogenesis. While hemolysis remained minimal even in high-shear devices, thrombus formation was more geometry-sensitive—underscoring the need to account for both factors in design. Modifying surface properties and accounting for blood composition could further reduce thrombotic risk. In Aim 2A, we compared PDMS, polypropylene (PP), and nanoporous silicon nitride (NPSiN) membranes for oxygen transport. Findings showed that in ECMO devices, blood-side resistance, not membrane permeability, often dominates oxygen transfer. Thus, membrane choice must be paired with optimized blood-side flow for full performance gains. Aim 2B directly addressed these limitations by integrating staggered herringbone mixers (SHBs), which introduced secondary flows and enhanced mixing. The Single Channel Herringbone design yielded the highest oxygen transfer, confirming the synergy between flow geometry and oxygen transport performance. Altogether, Aims 1A and 1B establish a strong framework for hemocompatibility evaluation, while Aims 2A and 2B provide complementary insights into optimizing oxygen transfer. Their interconnections highlight the value of a systems-level approach to designing microfluidic blood-contacting devices.
Targeting Nonsense-Mediated Rna Decay In Splicing Factor Mutant Myeloid Malignancies, Claudia Cabrera
Targeting Nonsense-Mediated Rna Decay In Splicing Factor Mutant Myeloid Malignancies, Claudia Cabrera
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 50% of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) (which frequently progresses to secondary acute myeloid leukemia [AML]), 60% of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) and 20% of de novo AML harbor heterozygous somatic mutations in spliceosome genes. We and others have shown that mutations in spliceosome genes U2AF1, SF3B1, SRSF2 and ZRSR2 cause alterations in RNA splicing, leading to production of numerous aberrant RNAs. Interestingly, spliceosome mutant cells are more sensitive to genetic alterations or drugs that further perturb RNA splicing, compared to wild-type cells. The sensitivity of spliceosome mutant cells to further perturbations in RNA splicing raises the possibility that …
The Role Of Il-33 In Itch, Anna M. Trier
The Role Of Il-33 In Itch, Anna M. Trier
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Chronic itch is associated with a broad range of medical conditions, from inflammatory skin diseases to cancer and organ dysfunction, and has a lifetime prevalence of up to 20%. Despite being common and debilitating, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive chronic itch are just beginning to be elucidated. Thus, therapeutic options are limited. Recent studies have identified that various pro-inflammatory cytokines can directly activate sensory neurons. This has resulted in mounting interest in the therapeutic potential of inhibiting these neuro-immune interactions. IL-33 is constitutively expressed by epithelial cells, which allows for its rapid release upon tissue damage or stress. …
Jarid2-Mediated Reprogramming Of Human Hematopoietic Progenitors For Stem Cell Transplantation, Wentao Han
Jarid2-Mediated Reprogramming Of Human Hematopoietic Progenitors For Stem Cell Transplantation, Wentao Han
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a well-established treatment for various hematological disorders. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) has emerged as an alternative source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). However, the limited number of functional repopulating cells in UCB units has encouraged researchers to develop methods to expand them ex vivo. Hematopoiesis is strictly regulated by epigenetic modifiers. JARID2 is a co-factor of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2), which recruits the complex to specific genomic loci and promotes the deposition of Histone 3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3), a repressive epigenetic mark that mediates condensed chromatin packing to silence …

Investigating The Roles Of Sox10 And Etv4 In Melanocyte And Melanoma Development, Catherine Marie Newsom-Stewart
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The neural crest is a transient, multipotent cell population unique to vertebrates that gives rise to diverse lineages, including craniofacial cartilage, peripheral neurons, glia, and pigment-producing melanocytes. Proper specification and differentiation of neural crest derivatives are orchestrated by tightly regulated gene regulatory networks, and disruption of these developmental programs can lead to congenital disorders and malignancies. Melanocytes, derived from the neural crest, are best known for their role in skin pigmentation but also contribute to homeostasis and specialized functions in the eye, ear, and heart. These cells produce melanin to protect tissues from ultraviolet radiation and oxidative damage, and they …
Single-Cell Analysis Of Clonal And Transcriptional Dynamics During Direct Reprogramming, Brent Biddy
Single-Cell Analysis Of Clonal And Transcriptional Dynamics During Direct Reprogramming, Brent Biddy
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Direct lineage reprogramming converts one cell type into another, a process characterized by significant heterogeneity. Single-cell genomic techniques have been instrumental in dissecting this variability, yet they often fail to preserve lineage relationships. Here, I present CellTagging, a sequential, combinatorial indexing method that enables the reconstruction of clonal history and gene expression dynamics at single-cell resolution. This facilitates the construction of multi-level lineage trees, providing insights into cellular reprogramming trajectories. We applied CellTagging to investigate direct lineage reprogramming of mouse embryonic fibroblasts into induced endoderm progenitors. Our analysis revealed two distinct reprogramming trajectories: one leading to successful conversion and another …
Performative Biomechanics : Evolving Buildings Into Inhabitable Organisms, Josh Lopez
Performative Biomechanics : Evolving Buildings Into Inhabitable Organisms, Josh Lopez
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
There has always been a connection between biology and architecture. Michael Pawlyn, in Biomimicry in Architecture, coined “biomechanical designs” to describe structural techniques derived from creatures. This study investigates chitin-based creatures. Crustaceans, insects, and microscopic organisms all have exoskeletons in nature. With a focus on crabs, other crustaceans and bugs, this study examines and evaluates the formal characteristics of chitin-based organisms. The architectural creations of OXMAN, NOX, which was founded by Lars Spuybroek; and Lebbeus Woods are among those that are analyzed and studied due to their inspiration from living things. They follow functional effectiveness in nature, which is why …

Soft Modular Robots: From Modular Tensegrity Structures To Bioinspired Sea Robots, Luyang Zhao
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The rapid advancement of robotics necessitates systems capable of adapting to complex, unstructured environments. Soft robots, with their flexibility and compliance, excel in delicate interactions, making them ideal for medical applications and search-and-rescue missions. Modular robots, on the other hand, offer reconfigurability, enabling diverse task-specific adaptations in dynamic settings. Despite their individual advantages, the integration of soft and modular robotics remains underexplored. This proposal aims to develop soft modular robots that combine the adaptability of soft robotics with the versatility of modularity. These systems will be capable of autonomously transitioning between locomotion, manipulation, and infrastructure assembly across land, water, and …

Purpose: Adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) significantly diminishes recurrence and mortality risks in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (BCa) patients. Nonetheless, suboptimal adherence and premature discontinuation during the initial year of treatment undermine these positive outcomes. This study aims to understand the potential diverse factors associated with perceived barriers to AET compliance at the onset of medication. Methods: We assessed perceived barriers to AET using the ASK-20 instrument for BCa patients initiating AET within 3 months. Our survey also included demographic variables (e.g., musculoskeletal symptoms) and clinical traits (e.g., medication type). Stepwise regression analyses were employed to elucidate the links between multilevel …
Characterizing Piezo1 Mechanotransduction In Articular Chondrocytes, Jaquelin Marlen Garcia Castorena
Characterizing Piezo1 Mechanotransduction In Articular Chondrocytes, Jaquelin Marlen Garcia Castorena
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease, affecting more than 350 million people worldwide. Along with inflammation and pain, a hallmark of OA is the degradation of articular cartilage (AC), an avascular and aneural tissue that coats and facilitates the bending of diarthrodial joints. AC withstands millions of cyclic mechanical loads annually, and chondrocytes, the only resident cells in the tissue, sense these loads through mechanically gated ion channels, including Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), PIEZO1 and PIEZO2. PIEZO1 is a highly expressed calcium ion channel in chondrocytes that can be activated through mechanical loading or chemically …

Core Grade 3: Rating Certainty Of Evidence—Assessing Inconsistency, Gordon Guyatt, Prashanti Eachempati
Peninsula Dental School
When Core GRADE users construct PICO frameworks that are broad with respect to both patients and interventions-as we believe they should-they must prepare for the possibility of inconsistent results. They do so by identifying a priori hypotheses to explain inconsistency, including a postulated direction. Having decided on their subgroup hypotheses, Core GRADE users address the key criteria for evaluating inconsistency. Examining the forest plot, they note the magnitude of differences in point estimates, the extent to which the CIs overlap, and where the point estimates lie in relation to the target of their certainty rating. The greater the variability in …

Weak Formulation For Solving Inverse Problems In Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (With Applications To Learning Dynamical Systems), Victor William Rielly
Dissertations and Theses
We combine numerical and machine learning techniques to present a general framework for solving inverse problems using vector valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces in a variational formulation. We present this framework in two papers. In the first paper, we present an original state-of-the-art method derived in the context of our general framework for learning dynamical systems. In the second paper, we generalize the method from our first paper to arrive at the framework for solving inverse problems. Then we apply our general framework to the task of learning dynamical systems. In both papers we consider numerous applications of our methods …

Blood Architecture : Designing A Hemophilia Treatment Center Through Biomimetic Principles, Melissa Da Costa Schmidt
Blood Architecture : Designing A Hemophilia Treatment Center Through Biomimetic Principles, Melissa Da Costa Schmidt
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
This thesis explores how biomimetic principles drawn from the blood clotting process can inform the architectural design of hemophilia treatment centers, enhancing their efficiency, adaptability, and patient-centered care. By paralleling the phases of hemostasis—platelet aggregation, clotting factor activation, and fibrin stabilization—with spatial functions, the design proposes a layout where acute care areas are centrally positioned for rapid response, while rehabilitation zones support long-term healing, mirroring the reinforcement phase of clotting. Regulated movement and spatial zoning echo the precise control of clot formation, promoting accessibility, privacy, and reduced congestion. Architectural forms inspired by vascular networks, combined with the use of natural …

Given their rarity and diversity, a fundamental understanding of the genomic underpinnings for many sarcoma subtypes is still lacking. To better define the molecular landscape of this group of diseases, we perform matched whole exome sequencing and RNA sequencing on a cohort of 1340 sarcoma tumor specimens. We identify recurrent somatic mutations and observe an increased mutational burden in metastatic vs. primary samples (p < 0.001). We observe frequent copy number alterations including whole genome doubling, with this feature being more common in metastatic tumors (p = 0.026). Estimation of immune cell abundances followed by hierarchical clustering identifies five immune subtypes ranging from low to high and we observe inferior overall survival in immune deplete clusters compared to immune enriched (p < 0.01). Interestingly, GIST predominantly form a distinct "immune intermediate" cluster that is marked by a specific enrichment for NK cells (FDR < 0.01).

BACKGROUND: There is significant overlap in clinical features between multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and Kawasaki disease (KD). We sought to compare the prevalence, severity, and associated factors for coronary artery (CA) involvement.
METHODS AND RESULTS: From January 1, 2020 through January 31, 2023, 1191 patients with MIS-C and 554 patients contemporaneously diagnosed with KD were enrolled into the International Kawasaki Disease Registry. Demographic and clinical features, laboratory values, maximum Z score in any CA branch +2.5 or greater) were determined separately for each diagnosis using multivariable logistic regression analyses. The prevalence of CA aneurysms was lower for MIS-C …
