Individual, Social, And Environmental Factors Associated With Patterns Of Parasitic Infection In Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus Imitator), Megan C. Henriquez
Individual, Social, And Environmental Factors Associated With Patterns Of Parasitic Infection In Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus Imitator), Megan C. Henriquez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Parasites, and the infectious diseases they carry, are thought to have significantly impacted our evolutionary trajectory for millennia. Exploring how parasites are acquired and transmitted by their hosts in wild, natural populations is integral to understanding how similar processes may have shaped host-parasite co-evolutionary relationships over time. However, parasitological studies in humans and in non-human primates have produced inconsistent results, highlighting the dynamic, nuanced, and unique relationships individual parasites have with their hosts. These relationships are largely regulated by variation in factors at host, social, and environmental levels. Characteristics unique to the host (e.g., age and sex), factors pertaining to …
Tradwives: The Housewifization Of The Girl Boss, Gagan Kaur
Tradwives: The Housewifization Of The Girl Boss, Gagan Kaur
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the reemergence of a particular performance of domesticity in the post-pandemic era, focusing on the rise of the "tradwife" (traditional wife) movement alongside the normalization and spread of Alt-Right ideology through popular social media platforms. It argues that the tradwife is not a return to tradition, but a commodified performance of domesticity built on the erasure of social reproductive labor. Tracing the lineage of the “housewife” from the enclosure of the commons to imperial domesticity and from the “girl boss” to tradwife influencer culture, this project situates the tradwife within a longer history of "housewifization"—wherein women's labor …

Decoding The Plant Metabolome: A Metabolomics Approach To Guereza (Colobus Guereza) Feeding Ecology In Kibale National Park, Uganda, Emma Grace Thurau
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Plant metabolites, an elusive and diverse group of plant chemicals, represent a complex chemical interplay between plants and herbivores. Plants contain essential nutrients necessary for herbivore survival, yet herbivore consumption results in negative fitness consequences to a plant. This relationship has triggered a coevolutionary arms race in which plants have evolved chemical defenses to prevent herbivore consumption and herbivores, in response, have evolved their own counter-adaptations. This arms race has led to the diverse numbers of herbivores and plants observed today; therefore, these plant metabolites act as a signature of evolution through their influence on herbivore adaptations. Plant metabolites are …

Glacier Velocity Estimation Using Adaptive Search Window And Patch Size, Pratik Patil
Master’s Dissertations
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology offers a robust solution for monitoring glacier surface motion, particularly in regions with challenging environmental conditions, since it do not dependence on time of day and weather. This paper presents an enhanced glacier motion monitoring approach based on a Deep Matching Network (DMN), which learns patch-pair correspondences in an end-to-end manner. Unlike traditional shallow feature tracking methods, DMN utilize deep feature similarity through a Siamese network architecture with dense connection blocks to maximize feature reuse and improve training efficiency. To further improve precision and reduce computational cost, the proposed method uses a variable search window …
Modeling And Verification Of Sigma Delta Neural Networks, Sirshendu Das
Modeling And Verification Of Sigma Delta Neural Networks, Sirshendu Das
Master’s Dissertations
In the context of modern day embedded safety-critical systems and low-resource edge devices in particular, Sigma-Delta Neural Networks (SDNNs) offer a promising alternative to traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) by leveraging eventdriven, sparse computations inspired by biological neural processing. This energyefficient paradigm makes SDNNs well-suited for neuromorphic hardware and realtime applications, particularly in scenarios with temporal redundancy, such as video processing. However, as neural networks become integral to safety-critical systems, ensuring their robustness against adversarial perturbations is an absolute necessity. In this work, we propose an end-to-end framework for formal modeling and verification of SDNNs using Satisfiability Modulo Theory (SMT). …
Enhancing Expressive Power Of Graph Neural Networks Using Geometric Transformations, Suranjan Dey
Enhancing Expressive Power Of Graph Neural Networks Using Geometric Transformations, Suranjan Dey
Master’s Dissertations
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are highly effective in many real-world tasks, such as molecular property prediction, modeling protein structures, analyzing user-item relationships, and making link predictions. What sets them apart is their ability to learn meaningful representations by capturing not just the features of individual nodes, but also the overall structure of the graph they belong to. This expressive strength allows GNNs to model complex relationships more accurately. In this work, we take a step further by introducing geometric transformations aimed at improving how GNNs handle spatial information. In particular, we focus on angular aggregation methods that maintain rotational consistency, …

Universally Consistent Hyperbolic Deep Neural Networks, Sagar Ghosh
Master’s Dissertations
The ubiquitous pertinence of Deep Neural Networks has made it pivotal in modern Computer Science Applications, ranging from Computer Vision to Pattern Recognition and Machine Translation. Although these deep architectures are primarily based on Euclidean Spaces, Hyperbolic Neural Networks (HNN) gained traction in recent times to tackle more complex non-Euclidean data having inherent hierarchical structures. These HNN architectures have shown commendable improvements in test results on tree or graph-like data by exploiting the inherent exponential metric distances of hyperbolic spaces, making them more suitable to embed non-Euclidean data. Although HNNs surpass their conventional Euclidean counterparts by commendable margins, little to …

The safety and reliability of Automated Driving Systems (ADS) are paramount, necessitating rigorous testing methodologies to uncover potential failures before deployment. Traditional testing approaches often prioritize either natural scenario sampling or safety-critical scenario generation, resulting in overly simplistic or unrealistic hazardous tests. In practice, the demand for natural scenarios (e.g., when evaluating the ADS's reliability in real-world conditions), critical scenarios (e.g., when evaluating safety in critical situations), or somewhere in between (e.g., when testing the ADS in regions with less civilized drivers) varies depending on the testing objectives. To address this issue, we propose the On-demand Scenario Generation (OSG) Framework, …

Resilience In Stem: How Gender-Professional Identity Integration (G-Pii) And Self-Compassion Empower Women To Thrive, Isabelle Chiew
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Fostering resilience is crucial for the retention of women in male-dominated fields such as STEM. This paper investigates the interplay between gender-professional identity integration (G-PII), resilience, and self-compassion through two complementary studies. It is hypothesised that G-PII positively predicts resilience, with higher levels of integration associated with greater resilience. Furthermore, self-compassion is expected to moderate this relationship. Study 1 employs a cross sectional survey design to explore the relationships between G-PII, self-compassion, and resilience, while Study 2 uses an experimental design to assess the causal impact of G-PII on resilience. Study 1 found that G-PII was significantly and positively associated …

Notable advances have been made in improving survival outcomes in various cancers, but some have incurred undesirable costs and effects to patients with respect to fertility and menopause. Patients are living longer with cancer, and patient reported outcomes are influencing decision-making by individuals and their health care providers. It is essential to evaluate existing standards of care on an ongoing basis and prioritize quality of life and long-term survivorship, particularly for interventions in early-stage cancers and risk-reducing strategies that often yield long-term life expectancy.

Bladder cancer accounts for 4 % of cancer diagnoses in the US. Current treatments primarily involve trans-urethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) and immunotherapy with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Despite the efficacy of TURBT, issues with residual tumors persist. We chose to utilize Cell Painting to screen a set of 244 flavonoid compounds for bladder cancer cell toxicity. Using multiparametric high content analysis termed SPACe, we discover promising candidates underscoring the potential of flavonoids in targeting bladder cancer cells and elucidating their mechanisms of action. Notably, compounds such as xanthohumol show promise in reducing cancer cell viability by altering lipid metabolism. …

G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) are one of the frequently investigated drug targets. GPCRs are involved in many human pathophysiologies that lead to various disease conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity. GPCR receptor activates multiple signaling pathways depending on the ligand and tissue type. However, this review will be limited to the GPCR-mediated metabolic modulations and the activation of relevant signaling pathways in cancer therapy. Cancer cells often have reprogrammed cell metabolism to support tumor growth and metastatic plasticity. Many aggressive cancer cells maintain a hybrid metabolic status, using both glycolysis and mitochondrial metabolism for better metabolic plasticity. In addition …

Background: Diagnosis of Kingella kingae skeletal system infections is made challenging by the microbe's fastidious nature. Detection and quantification of circulating microbial cell-free DNA (mcfDNA) in plasma by the Karius Test, a commercial metagenomic sequencing test, may offer promise in diagnosing pediatric spinal infections caused by difficult-to-culture organisms such as K. kingae .
Methods: Plasma mcfDNA sequencing detections of K. kingae from April 2018 to December 2020 were reviewed to identify pediatric (age < 18 years) patients. Medical charts of those with spinal infections were reviewed, and mcfDNA sequencing diagnostic performance was compared with usual care tests (ie, cultures, polymerase chain reaction).
Results: Ten children with K. kingae spinal infections were identified across 7 institutions. The median age was 16.5 months (range 11-23 months). All case-patients had vertebral osteomyelitis …

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but this variety has led to several long-standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable. This creates a fundamental problem in TBI diagnostics and outcome prediction, namely that it is not possible to equate results drawn from distinct tools and symptom inventories. Here, we present an approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventories by ranking item text similarities according to their conceptual likeness. We tested …

Background: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for ampullary adenocarcinoma is unclear. The Hidden Genome model classifies prognostic subtypes with greater accuracy than standard histologic classification (intestinal [INT] vs pancreatobiliary [PB]), but its predictive capacity to guide the use of AC remains unstudied.
Methods: We applied the Hidden Genome model to an international cohort of 183 patients with resected ampullary adenocarcinoma who underwent genomic sequencing. The model quantified the predicted cell of origin (colorectal vs pancreas/distal bile duct) in all specimens. Overall survival (OS) was compared using Kaplan-Meier estimates, stratified by AC use versus surgery alone (SA).
Results: Most patients …
