Gender-Based Crimes And The Colombian Special Jurisdiction For Peace, Caroline Davidson Jun 2025

Gender-Based Crimes And The Colombian Special Jurisdiction For Peace, Caroline Davidson

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace ("JEP"), created as part of Colombia's historic 2016 Peace Agreement, has been hailed as a novel, restorative justice-oriented mechanism for addressing gross human rights violations at the domestic level. Commentators point to the JEP as a potential model for other jurisdictions looking to address mass atrocities. The success or failure of this model hinges on the JEP's ability to effectively address an issue of great concern to the International Criminal Court as well as to Colombian civil society: gender-based crimes. This Article is the first to examine comprehensively the JEP's progress on this vital issue, …

Reducing Attention Complexity In Graph Transformers Through Subgraph Partitioning, Ranjan Kumar Choubey Jun 2025

Reducing Attention Complexity In Graph Transformers Through Subgraph Partitioning, Ranjan Kumar Choubey

Master’s Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the challenge of scaling Graph Transformers by proposing a subgraph-based strategy to reduce attention complexity. The proposed framework preserves representational power while making attention computation tractable for largescale graphs. The method begins by partitioning the input graph into K subgraphs using the METIS algorithm. Each subgraph is encoded using a combination of local structural features from a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) and global positional cues from Laplacian Positional Embeddings (LPEs). These embeddings are fused via a trainable projection function to form subgraph tokens. A supergraph is constructed to model interactions among subgraphs, allowing attention to be applied …

Some Results In Thermodynamic Formalism, C. Evans Hedges Jun 2025

Some Results In Thermodynamic Formalism, C. Evans Hedges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates several key questions at the intersection of dynamical systems, computability theory, and thermodynamic formalism. In the symbolic setting, we establish novel results regarding the statistical properties of equilibrium states, deriving bounds on probabilities of configurations and relating these bounds to the Gibbs property through the homoclinic relation. Additionally, we examine the computability of thermodynamic quantities such as pressure, ground state energy, and residual entropy. We show that topological pressure is computable from above for general subshifts and computable for strongly irreducible shifts, with similar results extending to ground state energy and residual entropy.

Extending beyond subshifts, we …

Sensing Protein Structural Transitions With Microfluidic Modulation Infrared Spectroscopy, Lathan Lucas, Phoebe S Tsoi, Ananya Nair, Allan Chris M Ferreon, Josephine C Ferreon

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Microfluidic modulation spectroscopy-infrared (MMS) offers a label-free, high-sensitivity approach for quantifying changes in protein secondary structures under native solution conditions. MMS subtracts the solvent backgrounds from sample signals by alternately flowing proteins and matched buffers through a microfluidic chamber, yielding clear amide I spectra from microliter volumes. In this study, we validated MMS on canonical globular proteins, bovine serum albumin, mCherry, and lysozyme, demonstrating accurate detection and resolution of α-helix, β-sheet, and mixed-fold structures. Applying MMS to the intrinsically disordered protein Tau, we detected environment-driven shifts in transient conformers: both the acidic (pH 2.5) and alkaline (pH 10) conditions increased …

Young Adults’ Metaperceptions Of Their Childhood Caregivers’ Appraisals And Young Adulthood Mental Health, Cassandra Svelnys Jun 2025

Young Adults’ Metaperceptions Of Their Childhood Caregivers’ Appraisals And Young Adulthood Mental Health, Cassandra Svelnys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early experiences and relationships have enduring impacts on the development of self and later mental health and wellbeing. In social relationships and interactions, the developing individual is continuously assessing how they view themself, how they view the other person, and how they believe the other person views them. Metaperceptions represent the latter construct: how an individual thinks another person perceives them. Childhood self-esteem, parent-child attachment, and metaperceptions are foundational constructs for the developing individual, yet metaperceptions have not previously been tested as a predictor for adulthood mental health while also accounting for childhood self-esteem and parent-child attachment. This study introduced …

Investigating Hedgehog Signaling And Th17-Mediated Inflammation In Blau Syndrome: Insights Into Chronic Inflammation, Benjamin Volinski Jun 2025

Investigating Hedgehog Signaling And Th17-Mediated Inflammation In Blau Syndrome: Insights Into Chronic Inflammation, Benjamin Volinski

University Honors Theses

Blau syndrome is a rare, monogenic inflammatory disorder caused by autosomal dominant mutations in NOD2, a cytosolic pattern recognition receptor that regulates immune signaling. Although traditionally considered an autoinflammatory disease driven by innate immune dysfunction, emerging evidence implicates T cells in Blau pathogenesis. Recent studies show that Nod2-deficient mice exhibit elevated IL-17A production despite normal TH17 differentiation, suggesting Nod2 regulates cytokine output independently of canonical lineage commitment. This study investigates how Nod2 mutations influence TH17-mediated inflammation and explores the role of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, particularly the transcription factor Gli2, in this process.

Using the Nod2R314Q/R314Q mouse model, …

Longitudinal Relations Between Self-Esteem And Depression: A Continuous Time Analysis With Exploration Of Sleep Duration Effects, Mackenzie Cummings Jun 2025

Longitudinal Relations Between Self-Esteem And Depression: A Continuous Time Analysis With Exploration Of Sleep Duration Effects, Mackenzie Cummings

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Adolescents and young adults face elevated risk for depression. While poor self-esteem and sleep disturbance are known risk factors, few studies have examined their unique and interactive contributions. Longitudinal research often overlooks unequal intervals and multiple sources of variance (e.g., between- and within-person). This study used continuous time structural equation modeling to address these gaps and examine relationships between self-esteem, sleep duration, and depression from adolescence into adulthood. Drawing on four waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 6,184), I tested whether sleep duration moderated the self-esteem–depression link and explored gender differences. …

Investigating Momentary Body Image Disturbance, Affect, And Disordered Eating Among College Students, Allison T. Cunning

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite evidence that eating disorders are associated with elevated mortality rates, increased risk of suicide, and societal and financial burden, treatment outcomes for individuals with eating disorders remain poor. Body image disturbance has emerged as a robust risk factor for the development and maintenance of disordered eating (e.g., overeating, binge eating, purging, restriction) and theoretical and clinical perspectives most commonly operationalize body image disturbance as a trait construct. However, empirical evidence suggests body dissatisfaction may fluctuate, and these fluctuations may play an important role in the relationship between risk factors and disordered eating. The current study employed ecological momentary assessment …

Roles Of Organic Agriculture For Water Optimization In Arid And Semi-Arid Regions, Shikha Sharma, Matt A. Yost, Jennifer R. Reeve

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research

Water scarcity is a critical challenge in arid and semi-arid regions, where agricultural water consumption accounts for a significant portion of freshwater use. Conventional agriculture (CA) methods with high reliance on chemical and mechanical inputs often exacerbate this issue through soil degradation and water loss. This review aims to examine how different organic practices, such as mulching, cover cropping, composting, crop rotation, and no-till (NT) in combination with precision technologies, can contribute to water optimization, and it discusses the opportunities and challenges for the adoption and implementation of those practices. Previous findings show that organic agriculture (OA) may outperform CA …

Regulation Of Spermatogenesis By The Notch Signaling Pathway, Emma O'Flaherty Jun 2025

Regulation Of Spermatogenesis By The Notch Signaling Pathway, Emma O'Flaherty

Master's Theses

The Notch signaling pathway plays a significant role in gonad development and spermatogenesis, but little is known about its specific targets in the testis. The Drosophila testis contains two populations of stem cells: germline stem cells and cyst stem cells, which give rise to differentiating germline and somatic cyst cells, respectively. Notch signaling is activated in the somatic cyst cells by the Delta ligand from the germline in a region of the testes coined the “transition zone”, where somatic cyst cells progress from early cyst cells surrounding gonialblasts and 2-cell germline cysts to late cyst cells surrounding 16-cell spermatocyte cysts. …
