Aeolus-Ds: Dust-Aware Ai Decision Support For Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) — A Design Science Research Framework Integrating Aerosol Remote Sensing, Land Disturbance, And Clinical Sentinel Signals, Harsha Sammangi, Aditya Jagatha, Harshini Balaga

Research & Publications

This paper presents Aeolus-DS, a design science research (DSR) artifact that integrates aerosol remote sensing (MAIAC AOD; dust fraction), mesoscale meteorology and soil moisture (ERA5), land-disturbance telemetry (construction, off-road vehicle activity, nightlights) and clinical sentinel signals (syndromic ED chief complaints, pneumonia rule-out) into a dust-aware, AI-driven early warning and decision-support system for Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever). Methodologically, we propose a graph spatiotemporal transformer with direction-aware attention and physics-guided regularisation reflecting aeolian transport. Using county-week panels (2014-2024) for the U.S. Southwest (AZ–CA–NV), Aeolus-DS improves now-casting mean absolute error (MAE) by 18% and two-week area under precision-recall curve (AUPRC) by 21% over …

Site Fidelity Is Associated With The Social Experience Of Forked Fungus Beetles (Bolitotherus Cornutus), Joo Yeon Kim , '22, C. W. Wood, E. D. Brodie Iii, Vincent A. Formica

Biology Faculty Works

Consistently returning to or remaining within a specific location, a behavior known as site fidelity, is a useful metric for quantifying animal space use. When multiple individuals display similar site fidelity patterns, they are likely to interact, shaping the degree and quality of their social interactions. However, the link between the expression of site fidelity behavior and an individual’s social experience has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study we examined (1) how intrinsic individual properties (body size and sex) predicted variation in site fidelity and (2) whether site fidelity was linked to the social experience of individuals in wild …

Water Exposure Time Distributions Controlled By Freshwater Releases In A Semi-Enclosed Estuary, Caitlin R.R. Turner, Matthew Hiatt

Faculty Publications

Freshwater diversions manage water shortages, salinity, and control floodwater by redirecting river flows; however, their full ecological and hydrological impact remains unknown. This study examines the Lake Pontchartrain Estuary in Louisiana using a hydrodynamic model and Lagrangian particle tracking to assess how diversion operations (open, closed) and tributary discharge levels (low, median, high) influence water exposure time—the cumulative duration water remains in a domain, including re-entry. Exposure time was analyzed based on the time required for 50%, 75%, and 90% of released particles ((Formula presented.), (Formula presented.), and (Formula presented.)) to leave a defined region of interest (ROI). Results show …

A Quantitative Study Of Presidents At Public And Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Richard J. Gallot, Jr.

PhD in Organizational Leadership

There has been a notable increase in presidential turnover at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), leading to significant leadership challenges (Freeman & Gasman, 2014). Abrupt leadership changes create instability that impacts recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff, as well as overall morale on campuses (Gasman et al., 2010). Despite the importance of effective leadership, there is limited research specifically focusing on HBCU presidencies (Freeman & Palmer, 2020). Although the American Council on Education (ACE) has surveyed college and university presidents every 5 years since 1986, few studies have investigated HBCU presidents as a distinctive group. Existing research …

Overexpression Of The Polyhydroxybutyrate Depolymerase Gene Of Streptomyces Nymphaeiformis In Streptomyces Lividans Tk24, Ana Laura Mumic Montans, Stephan Francis Baron

ASPIRE 2026

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), commonly known as biodegradable plastics, are polymers of hydroxyalkanoate monomers that are produced by over 75 genera of bacteria [1]. The most common PHA is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), which is composed of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) monomers. PHB is degraded to 3HB by PHB depolymerases [2]. Streptomyces nymphaeiformis is a Gram positive, filamentous bacterium with a genomic G+C content of ~70% [3]. Production of PHB depolymerase in this organism is induced by the presence of PHB and 3HB, with maximal activity observed after 24 to 48 hrs, [4]. The PHB depolymerase protein can be purified from cell-free supernatants of PHB-grown cells …

Machine Learning For Digital Biomarker-Based Detection Of Cognitive Decline, Seng Khoon The

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease with a prevalence rate expected to triple by 2050, posing a significant challenge for health services. To impede the increasing prevalence, medical professionals and scientists are actively investigating technology to detect cognitive decline at a reversible stage known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Digital biomarker technology is an emerging pragmatic approach to permit objective, ecologically valid, and long-term continuous measurement of cognitive health status, rendering it as one of the promising technologies for early MCI detection. Despite its potential, it is nontrivial to encode, extract and combine predictive information from these digital biomarker technologies; advanced …

Evaluation Of Phytotoxicity Of Greenly Treated Domestic Wastewater By Spent Plant Leaf Powders, Adnan Ahmad Ali-Nizam, Magdi Amin, Isam Shaker Hemza

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences

Health and ecosystems face widespread, impactful problems. Untreated wastewater is discharged into waterways and lands in most developing countries, containing harmful substances and pathogens. WHO estimates that nearly 1.7 billion people drink contaminated water in developing countries, and that contamination leads to nearly 500,000 diarrheal deaths each year. However, existing treatment methods are insufficient to remove dissolved substances and specific pollutants; they are very expensive, energy-intensive, require advanced technologies, and high operational skills. The process of removing pollutants from wastewater using plant waste powders involves a combination of mechanisms, including adsorption, complexation, and ion exchange. These processes are characterized by …

Creating Blood Analogs To Mimic Steady-State Non-Newtonian Shear-Thinning Characteristics Under Various Thermal Conditions, Hang Yi, Alexander Wang, Christopher Wang, Jared Chong, Chungyiu Ma, Luke Bramlage, Bryan Ludwig, Zifeng Yang

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Blood analogs are widely employed in in vitro experiments such as particle image velocity (PIV) to secure hemodynamics, assisting pathophysiological diagnoses of neurovascular and cardiovascular diseases, as well as pre-surgical planning and intraoperative orientation. To obtain accurate physical parameters, which are critical for diagnosis and treatment, blood analogs should exhibit realistic non-Newtonian shear-thinning features. In this study, two types of blood analogs working under room temperature (293.15 K) were created to mimic the steady-state shear-thinning features of blood over a temperature range of 295 to 312 K and a shear range of 1~250 s−1 at a hematocrit of ~40%. Type …

Modeling The Impact Of Explosive Volcanism On Biogeochemical Cycling At The Peak Of The Late Paleozoic Icehouse, Lily S. Pfeifer, Qingting Wu, Ying Cui, Gerilyn S. Soreghan Jul 2025

Modeling The Impact Of Explosive Volcanism On Biogeochemical Cycling At The Peak Of The Late Paleozoic Icehouse, Lily S. Pfeifer, Qingting Wu, Ying Cui, Gerilyn S. Soreghan

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The peak of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) coincided with atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) lows, and large-magnitude fluctuations in glacial-interglacial pCO2, but the driver(s) for pCO2 drawdown at this time remain debated. Backed by parameters for the frequency and magnitude of Late Carboniferous volcanism derived from the rock record, we apply an intermediate complexity Earth system model to evaluate the biogeochemical impacts of ash-borne nutrients from frequent (decadal) and explosive silicic volcanism on nutrient cycling ca. 310–300 Ma. Results show that volcanic perturbations result in negligible changes in marine particulate organic carbon export concurrent with sustained increases in pCO2 …
