Tropical forests are a dominant regulator of the global carbon cycle, exchanging more carbon dioxide with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Climate models predict unprecedented climatic warming in tropical regions in the coming decades; however, in situ field warming studies are severely lacking in tropical forests. Here we present results from an in situ warming experiment in Puerto Rico, where soil respiration responses to +4 oC warming were assessed half-hourly for a year. Soil respiration rates were 42-204% higher in warmed relative to ambient plots, representing some of the highest soil respiration rates reported for any …
A Case For Military Proportionality: Disabling Nuclear Plants, Henry Sokolski
A Case For Military Proportionality: Disabling Nuclear Plants, Henry Sokolski
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This special commentary argues that striking nuclear and other hazardous civilian infrastructure is often militarily counterproductive and should be avoided not just for legal and moral reasons but because strikes can defeat achieving one’s war aims. Unlike most commentaries, which treat proportionality as an abstract legal constraint, this article shows how proportionality can serve as a concrete tool for winning wars and maintaining alliances. The article draws on military history, current targeting doctrines, and recent war games. The analysis gives military planners practical guidance for how and why to disable certain civilian targets without undermining their own operations.

Notch1 Reverses Immune Suppression In Small Cell Lung Cancer Through Reactivation Of Sting, Yoo Sun Kim, Haobin Chen, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Downregulation of antigen presentation and lack of immune infiltration are defining features of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), limiting response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). While a high-MHC class I, immune-inflamed subset benefits from ICB, underlying mechanisms of immune response in SCLC have yet to be elucidated. Here we show that in the IMpower133 clinical trial, high, but not low, NOTCH1 expression was significantly associated with longer survival with the addition of ICB to chemotherapy among approximately 80% of SCLC patients with NE-enriched tumors (ASCL1-enriched, HR 0.39, P = 0.0012; NEUROD1-enriched, HR 0.44, P = 0.024). Overexpression or pharmacologic activation …

Investigating The Effects Of Cystatin D On Osteoporosis In Iraqi Patients, Zahraa Salim Hassan, Layla Othman Farhan
Baghdad Science Journal
The common systemic skeletal disorder known as osteoporosis (OP) is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, which makes bones brittle and prone to breaking. Because of Cystatin D (CST5) peptide potential to regulate a significant class of proteolytic enzymes that play a crucial part in pathophysiological processes, cystatins have drawn a lot of attention in the past ten years, as well as their real efficacy in preventing the growth of bacteria and viruses in vivo. This study evaluated the serum cystatin D (CST5) diagnostic accuracy in osteoporosis and osteopenia patients. One hundred twenty participants were …

Design, Synthesis And Antibacterial Evaluation Of Some New Pyrrolidine Derivatives Based Pyrazole Moiety Via Vilsmeier-Haack Reaction, Sabah Salim Al-Dulaimi, Muna Sameer Al-Rawi
Baghdad Science Journal
The following work involved synthesizing a new series of substituted Pyrrolidine/4H-Pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde derivatives [IV]a-e derived from captopril known as an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor drug, using the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. There were some steps involved for synthesizing new hydrazone compounds [III]a-e via refluxing equal mole of captopril hydrazide [II] with different substituted aromatic ketone (acetophenone, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, 4-aminoacetophenone, 4-nitroacetophenone, and 4-bromoacetophenone) in benzene via condensation reaction. The newly substituted 4H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde derivatives [IV]a-e are obtained via a cyclization reaction of substitute hydrazones [III]a-e heating with POCl3/DMF, under Vilsmeier–Haack reaction. The prepared pyrrolidine derivatives-based pyrazole …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with non-Hispanic Black women bearing a disproportionately high burden of the disease. Although this group has a lower overall prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), those who develop GDM face an increased risk of progressing to T2DM. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to explore the relationship between GDM, physical activity, weight status, and T2DM development among non-Hispanic Black women. Secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, collected from 2017 through March 2020, were analyzed. The health belief model served …

Despite the success of targeted inhibitors in cutaneous melanoma, therapeutic responses are limited by the aged tumor microenvironment and drug-tolerant residual cells. Given the similarities between drug tolerance and cellular dormancy, we studied the dormancy marker, nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group F member 1 (NR2F1), in response to BRAF-V600E inhibitors (BRAFi) plus MEK inhibitors (MEKi) in BRAF-mutant melanoma models. Transcriptomic analysis of melanoma patient samples treated with BRAFi + MEKi showed increased NR2F1. NR2F1 was highly expressed in the drug-tolerant invasive cell state of minimal residual disease in patient-derived and mouse-derived xenografts on BRAFi + MEKi. NR2F1 over-expression was sufficient …

A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
All Publications
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is now the gold standard radiation technique for the treatment of multiple brain metastases. By virtue of its targeting accuracy, SRS, relative to whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT), maximizes both the likelihood of tumor ablation while minimizing irradiation (injury) of the uninvolved brain. The extent to which the latter objective is accomplished varies among radiosurgery platforms. In this study, we used a standardized imaging dataset taken from a patient with 10 random brain metastases to calculate the radiation dose delivered to the uninvolved normal brain across a range of modern SRS delivery platforms. This analysis reveals that irradiation of …
Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev
Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper deals into the long-term behavior of subordinated critical branching processes with migration. We focus on scenarios where emigration is the dominant factor and introduce additional randomness in timing through a subordination mechanism, involving renewal processes. The key findings highlight how the initial population size and the interarrival mean time influence both asymptotic behavior of the non-extinction probability and corresponding Yaglom type limit theorems. We also study an alternating regenerative process, when the population cycles between zero and positive states. This research complements previous studies for processes when immigration prevails over emigration.

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that help balance microbes in intestines and promote growth beneficial bacteria, they vary between bacteria, yeasts, and fungi and they are helpful to human health when taken in adequate and suitable amounts. In addition to maintaining intestinal health and help with digestion and absorption, also inhibiting development and preventing spread of harmful microorganisms. It exists in different forms, in the intestines and in the foods, products fermented, and in the pharmaceutical supplements. Because human health depends largely on the interaction between humans and these microorganisms known as probiotics, it has found that these organisms have vital …

Longitudinal Association Of Fatigue With Cytokines Over The Course Of Hematologic Cancer Treatment, Heeju Kim, Joon Ho Moon, Tenko Raykov
Longitudinal Association Of Fatigue With Cytokines Over The Course Of Hematologic Cancer Treatment, Heeju Kim, Joon Ho Moon, Tenko Raykov
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Assessing and managing symptom is a core role of oncology nurses. Fatigue is the most common and distressing symptoms in cancer patients. Mechanism-specific interventions are not currently available and most interventions are supportive care, such as exercise. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are still unclear, complex and multifactorial. A plausible hypothetical mechanisms is the pro-inflammatory cytokines dysregulation hypothesis. Yet, the evidence for which cytokines and what time point would play a role in fatigue experience is uncertain at this time point due to design issues of the studies.
Objectives: We examined (a) the patterns of changes in fatigue severity during chemotherapy …

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Veterans are more likely than the general population to experience a range of mental health problems. While many veteran mental health support programs are available, veterans may struggle to access and engage with these services for various reasons (e.g., a stigmatized perception of mental health disorders, mistrust). Animal-assisted services have become more popular in civilian and military health care settings where traditional therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) may not always be effective. Assistance dogs, for example, which live with veterans to provide disability support, have been successfully employed for veteran mental health. Unfortunately, a subgroup of veterans may miss out …

Two New Species Of Uroplectes Peters, 1861 (Scorpiones, Buthidae) From Somaliland And Mozambique, František Kovařík
Euscorpius
Two new species, Uroplectes elmii sp. n. from Somaliland and U. mossambicensis sp. n. from Mozambique are described, fully illustrated with color photos showing their morphology. Both species are similar to Uroplectes fischeri (Karsch, 1879) from which they differ mainly in finger dentition (Uroplectes elmii sp. n.) and strongly reduced tibial spurs on legs III–IV (U. mossambicensis sp. n.). Uroplectes elmii sp. n. is also compared with U. pardii Kovařík, 2003, from which it differs mainly by extremely reduced to absent metasomal punctation. A distribution map of all …

This study investigates the degradation of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic composites, fabricated via non-autoclave molding, under tropical climatic conditions across three regions over three years. Forty specimens (10 control, 30 exposed) with 2x2 twill weave and 0°/90° fiber orientation were subjected to tensile and compressive testing, microscopy, and X-ray computed tomography. Control specimens established baseline properties, while exposed specimens underwent three-year weathering. Statistical and principal component analyses revealed significant mechanical degradation, with tensile strength decreasing by up to 16.1% (p

Impact Of Plasma-Activated Water On Breast Cancer Cell Viability, Maryam G. Jasim, Hammad R. Humud
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Plasma-activated water (PAW) was generated using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system operating with a 1:1 mixture of nitrogen and argon gases to evaluate its cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Water samples were divided into five groups: 0 minutes (control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes of plasma exposure. The resulting PAW was applied to cultured cells, and cell viability was assessed 24- and 48-hour post-treatment. Viability was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed an apparent time-dependent increase in cytotoxicity. At 24 hours, cell mortality rates were 1.9%, 40.7%, 48.1%, 53.6%, …
