Treating Low-Concentration Methane Emissions Via A Methanotroph-Based Biotrickling Filter: Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment, Waaseyaaban Landgren, Robert Handler, David Shonnard, Mary E. Lidstrom
Michigan Tech Publications
Methane, a greenhouse gas which has a global warming potential 80 times greater than carbon dioxide on a 20-year time scale, greatly contributes to global warming. Removing 1 Gt of atmospheric methane by 2050 would limit global temperature increase from reaching 1.5 °C. Currently, biotrickling filter systems for removing atmospheric methane via methanotrophs exist, but not for very low methane concentrations (< 1 v%). Recent work at the University of Washington to isolate and improve a microbial strain which thrives at 500 ppmv CH4 has removed one obstacle in making this technology feasible. In this study, techno-economic and environmental life cycle assessment analyses conducted on this process have assessed its economic feasibility, greenhouse gas reduction potential, and possible areas of improvement. Study results show that at 500 ppmv CH4, this process could remove atmospheric methane at a cost of USD 3992–5224/tCH4. The best-performing case also produces annual net reductions in warming potential by 276–311 tCO2e/120 m3 process unit deployed. Many opportunities exist to improve the outcomes of the baseline analysis even further, especially related to reducing the transport distance of media and harvested biomass.

The field of ecology contains systemic issues and inequalities due to a history of exclusionary forces (e.g. colonialism). In response, there is a push to reimagine research labs outside of these forces. In this talk, Gersony will present the PLACE (PLant physiology, Art, and Community Engagement) lab’s artistic and scientific exploration of northeastern tree responses to climate change, and also discuss the lab’s broader project of reimagining a new way forward centered around joy, art, and community.
Justice Impacted Mothers: An Autoethnographic Study Exploring The Impacts Of Quality Prison Visitation With Children, Sarah E. Gore
Justice Impacted Mothers: An Autoethnographic Study Exploring The Impacts Of Quality Prison Visitation With Children, Sarah E. Gore
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This study explores the impacts of in-person visitation at correctional facilities and how the quality of this contact affects relationships between justice impacted mothers and their children. Little is known about these nuanced lived experiences as revealed by qualitative data and from someone who is mothering during incarceration. The literature on maternal incarceration is vast, but relies heavily on quantitative data. Existing research indicates facility visits, particularly those of high quality, offer constructive benefits such as reductions in maternal recidivism rates. However, separation during incarceration has shown higher risks for adolescent substance abuse, behavioral, and academic struggles. This study expands …

Hydralazine (HYZ), a treatment for preeclampsia and hypertensive crisis, is listed by the World Health Organization as an essential medicine. Its mode of action has remained unknown through its seven decades of clinical use. Here, we identify 2-aminoethanethiol dioxygenase (ADO), a key mediator of targeted protein degradation, as a selective HYZ target. The drug chelates ADO's metallocofactor and can alkylate one of its ligands. The resultant inactivation stabilizes regulators of G protein signaling (RGS4 and RGS5) that ADO normally marks for proteolysis, explaining the drug's vasodilatory activity and comporting with observations of diminished RGS levels in both clinical preeclampsia and …

Agriculture, emergency preparedness, and water resource management all depend on accurate rainfall forecasts. This study investigates how well machine learning models predict monthly rainfall in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, specifically in the Pirmam area. Historical weather data was analyzed using a variety of models, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Elastic Net (ELNET), and Ridge Regression. Statistical measures including Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Mean Bias Error (MBE), Normalized Root Mean Squared Error (nRMSE), Coefficient of Determination (R2), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were …

Plant transformation efficiency is highly dependent on species, individual genotypes, and tissue types. In maize, immature embryos are regularly used for transformation. The process relies heavily on callus development, as it is intricately associated with somatic embryogenesis and subsequent plant regeneration, both of which directly affect transformation efficiency. Immature embryos of the segregation progeny derived from the two inbred parents, a transformation-amenable line A188 and a recalcitrant line B73, can be cultured to form two primary callus types: Type I and Type II. The Type II callus grows faster and is a favorable type for regeneration. Here, Type I and …

Twenty Minutes Of Corsi Block Tapping Task Training Does Not Improve Mental Rotation In Adults With Stroke, Sarah A. Kettlety, Giuliet L. Kibler, Andrew Hooyman, Christina K. Holl, Sydney Y. Schaefer, Kristan A. Leech
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Visuospatial function is commonly impaired post-stroke and is associated with motor learning and recovery. A single, twenty-minute Corsi Block Tapping Task (CBTT) training session improved visuospatial function in young neurotypical adults; however, it is unclear whether this training would improve visuospatial function in adults with stroke.
Objective: To understand if a single, twenty-minute CBTT training session improved visuospatial function in adults with stroke compared to a no-training control group of adults with stroke.
Methods: Participants post-stroke were assigned to one of two groups. The training group completed twenty minutes of computerized CBTT training. The control group completed a survey …

This article describes the classification of exoskeletons. This classification is based on the use of exoskeletons in the medical field, shape, power source, generation, parts related to the human body, structural material, and control forms based on sensor and actuator devices. In addition, examples of each category are given. The main goal is to comprehensively evaluate medical exoskeletons, pay special attention to their functions and goals, conduct scientific research, and further develop these devices. As a result, a completely new type of classification of medical exoskeletons was developed. The developed new type of classification serves as an important guide in …

Multiplexed imaging allows multiple cell types to be simultaneously visualised in a single tissue sample, generating unprecedented amounts of spatially-resolved, biological data. In topological data analysis, persistent homology provides multiscale descriptors of “shape" suitable for the analysis of such spatial data. Here we propose a novel visualisation of persistent homology (PH) and fine-tune vectorisations thereof (exploring the effect of different weightings for persistence images, a prominent vectorisation of PH). These approaches offer new biological interpretations and promising avenues for improving the analysis of complex spatial biological data especially in multiple cell type data. To illustrate our methods, we apply them …

In this study, a chitosan/copper (Ch/Cu²⁺) polymetallic complex was synthesized from chitosan obtained by the cryogenic method from Apis mellifera bees. The structural and physicochemical properties of the complex were investigated using FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, TGA, and DLS analyses. FTIR spectra showed shifts in absorption bands at 1400-1339 cm⁻¹ and 1640-1550 cm⁻¹, confirming the coordination of Cu²⁺ ions with amino and hydroxyl groups. UV-Vis spectra revealed absorption peaks in the 410-540 nm range, while XRD analysis indicated new crystalline peaks at 2θ = 24°, 27°, and 37°. Thermal analysis demonstrated high thermal stability of the complex, and DLS confirmed a …
