Journal of College Access
The impact of COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing discussions around social inequality have significantly reshaped traditional college admission practices. This study explores the potential of using statewide assessments that are accessible to all students and aligned with curriculum standards as an alternative to college admission tests. Hierarchical linear modeling further revealed that statewide assessment scores contributed an additional 9% of the variance in admission scores above and beyond high school GPA and core coursework. Logistic regression and random forest analyses indicated that high school GPA and statewide assessment scores were the most contributing factors to admissions decisions, followed by core coursework. …

Background
The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a highly invasive pest that causes significant damages to tomato crops globally. Its resistance to commonly used chemical insecticides has made management increasingly difficult, prompting the need for sustainable, effective alternatives. This study investigated the efficacy of a Lebanese isolate of Beauveria pseudobassiana as a biological control agent against T. absoluta, compared its performance to Bacillus thuringiensis and conventional pesticide mixtures under both controlled, commercial production conditions
Results
Three preliminary cage experiments were conducted under controlled infestation conditions using larvae reared from field-collected adults. Conidial suspensions of B. pseudobassiana …

Cohesin gene mutations occur in many malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Loss-of-function mutations in the four major cohesin complex genes (RAD21, SMC3, SMC1a, and STAG2) occur across most major genetic subtypes of AML but are notably absent in AML harboring CBFB::MYH11, suggesting that cohesin mutations yield distinct biological outcomes dependent on the genetic AML driver. We hypothesized that CBFB::MYH11-expressing leukemias would be dependent on intact cohesin genes given their near-mutual exclusivity. To investigate this, we combined either germline or inducible heterozygous deletions in cohesin genes Smc3 or Rad21, respectively, with an inducible murine model of Cbfb::MYH11 AML. This approach …

The female Aedes aegypti mosquito's remarkable ability to hunt humans and transmit pathogens relies on her unique biology. Here, we present the Aedes aegypti Mosquito Cell Atlas, a comprehensive single-nucleus RNA sequencing dataset of more than 367,000 nuclei from 19 dissected tissues of adult female and male Aedes aegypti, providing cellular-level resolution of mosquito biology. We identify novel cell types and expand our understanding of sensory neuron organization of chemoreceptors across all sensory tissues. Our analysis uncovers male-specific cells and sexually dimorphic gene expression in the antenna and brain. In female mosquitoes, we find that glial cells, rather than neurons, …

Radiation exposure impairs rapidly renewing tissues like the intestinal epithelium, yet translational insights from murine models have been limited by species-specific responses. Here, we use human intestinal organoids (HIOs) derived from jejunal epithelium to evaluate human epithelial responses to low dose proton and photon (gamma) radiation. Gamma irradiation induces a unique developmental and metabolic shift in crypt-like organoids, including enrichment of amino acid metabolism pathways and activation of fetal-associated transcription factors and morphology. Integrated multi-omic profiling reveals serotonin biosynthesis as a central regenerative node. Human intestinal organoids can complement animal models and are emerging as a powerful tool in modeling …

Graduate School Accessibility For Undocumented And Dacamented Scholars Across The United States, Casandra P. Sandoval Hurtado, Ronnie Rios, Kasandra Negrete, Stephany Mendez Ortega, Richard Nunn
Journal of College Access
Literature on higher education accessibility for undocumented and DACAmented (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students has mostly focused on undergraduate students. This paper discusses a comprehensive study of the undocumented graduate student policies of 50 universities across the United States. Using systematic web searches and follow-up interviews with institutional liaisons, we evaluated admissions, tuition classification, funding, and social support practices through an institutional theory lens. This theory posits that institutions prioritize alignment with other institutions, which can lead to a lack of action in providing systemic services. Our findings fit within institutional theory, as many webpages were often confusing or …

Disrupting Latina/X Media Representations: A Performance Art Installation Informed By Autoethnographic And Embodied Explorations, Sandra Cristina Roa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation I use autoethnography and performance methods to create a performance art installation that examines and re-imagines the role of media representations in shaping how I as a Latina actively negotiates belonging and identifies this concept as always in a processes requiring negotiation. I argue belonging is influenced by how I see myself or don’t see myself in media representation and offer the counter-narrative as a way of asserting agency and disrupting marginalization. In this project, I tend to the tensions felt between being a community member, media maker, and qualitative researcher in order to disrupt media messages. …

The Regulation Of The Hippo Signalling Pathway Effector Yap Through A Novel Lipid-Dependent Extracellular Matrix Complex, Simge Karagil, Natalia Haddad, Michael Stolinski, Natasha Hill, Darren Johnson, Nadine Wehida, Ahmed Elbediwy
School of Biomedical Sciences
Lipid metabolism plays a significant role in the regulation of various critical pathways within cells, where enhanced lipid metabolism is a hallmark of cancer cell metabolism. The Hippo signalling pathway poses as an important signalling pathway that governs tissue growth control and tumorigenesis. The effector of the Hippo signalling pathway, Yes-associated protein (YAP), serves as a central regulator for this growth control. Once a tissue develops to its correct size, YAP is phosphorylated and inactivated within the cytoplasm by the activation of the Hippo pathway, where its inactivation results in YAP nucleus translocation. This allows its dephosphorylation, modulating various cellular …
Synergetics In Complex Adaptive Systems, Joseph C. Mckinley
Synergetics In Complex Adaptive Systems, Joseph C. Mckinley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Synergetics is an emerging paradigm which quantitatively describes and predicts the dynamics of complex living and nonliving systems. It has illuminated how complex systems can spontaneously self-organize by coordinating the activity of their constituent components toward some coherent, collective behavior. This coordinated activity can produce complex macroscopic spatiotemporal patterns without the need for central planning. In this dissertation, we develop and explore generalizations of the Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) model of coordination dynamics. These generalizations include modeling higher-dimensional systems of coupled multistable oscillators with arbitrary diversity and coupling parameters, where the system components have the capacity to “learn” or adapt their intrinsic …

Digital Material Passports In The Aec Industry: A Scoping Review And Conceptualisation Of Future Research Challenges, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Duhan Olmez, Jason Grout, Alexandra Carr
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Material passports (MPs) are datasets designed to track and manage building elements’ lifecycles, including the documentation of provenance, location, or disassembly information. The last few years have seen a growth in MPs development, catalysed by international, national, and regional directives on decarbonisation, data transparency, product labelling, and the need to rethink the reporting of sustainability metrics in the built environment. Recent MP prototypes, however, encompass multiple data architectures and have been implemented across various building typologies, regulatory jurisdictions, and construction processes, resulting in unclear adoption pathways in industry. In response to this challenge, this paper maps this emerging field using …

Integrating Microbial Communities With Above- And Below-Ground Carbon And Multispectral Satellite Data In Mangrove Forests, Huda Ahmed Alshalan
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Mangrove ecosystems are vital blue carbon sinks increasingly threatened by human activities and climate change, especially in arid, hypersaline regions. This study examines Avicennia marina, the dominant UAE mangrove species, recognized for its significant carbon retention capability0. Its biomass and stability are influenced by sediment chemistry, and bacterial diversity and community structure which drive nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition—key processes sustaining soil fertility and carbon sequestration. Remote sensing enables large-scale assessment of mangrove distribution and density, but single spectral indices often miss ecological variability in the fragmented UAE mangrove habitats. Combining multiple spectral indices with field data improves detection, …

Selection is a fundamental evolutionary force that shapes patterns of genetic variation across species. However, simulations incorporating realistic selection along heterogeneous genomes in complex demographic histories are challenging, limiting our ability to benchmark statistical methods aimed at detecting selection and to explore theoretical predictions. stdpopsim is a community-maintained simulation library that already provides an extensive catalog of species-specific population genetic models. Here, we present a major extension to the stdpopsim framework that enables simulation of various modes of selection, including background selection, selective sweeps, and arbitrary distributions of fitness effects (DFE) acting on annotated subsets of the genome (for instance, …

The Black Community’S Appraisal Of Collective Trauma Events: Impact On Help-Seeking Behavior Intentions, Cherylle Ann Chapman
ETD Collection
Collective trauma is the psychological and emotional response to shared mass tragedies that impact entire communities and large groups of people. Individuals respond to these events in different ways, depending on factors such as their socioeconomic status, previous trauma exposure, the severity of the event, and their proximity to it. The effects of mass tragedies such as natural disasters, COVID-19, or neighborhood violence are heterogeneous. Some people may withdraw or isolate, while others have been found to exhibit resilience and psychosocial improvement. While previous research has primarily investigated collective trauma within the general population, less is known about how individuals …

During development, brain regions follow encoded growth trajectories. Compared to classical brain growth charts, high-definition growth charts could quantify regional volumetric growth and constituent cell types, improving our understanding of typical and pathological brain development. Here, we create high-resolution 3D atlases of the early postnatal mouse brain, using Allen CCFv3 anatomical labels, at postnatal days (P) 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, and determine the volumetric growth of different brain regions. We utilize 11 different cell type-specific transgenic animals to validate and refine anatomical labels. Moreover, we reveal region-specific density changes in γ-aminobutyric acid-producing (GABAergic) neurons, cortical layer-specific cell …

Dopamine (DA) midbrain neurons are involved in a wide array of key brain functions including movement control and reward-based learning. They are also critical for major brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease or schizophrenia. DA neurons projecting to distinct striatal territories are diverse with regard to their molecular makeup and cellular physiology, which are likely to contribute to the observed differences in temporal DA dynamics. Among these regions, the dorsolateral striatum (DLS) displays the fastest DA dynamics, which might control the moment-to-moment vigor and variability of voluntary movements. However, the underlying mechanisms for these DLS-specific fast DA fluctuations are unresolved. …

Atrial fibrillation (AF) remains the leading cardiac cause of stroke and AF-related death rate in the United States has been increasing for over twenty years. While the effect of standalone AF on heart rate is well established, there is a lack of clarity on its impact on other critical hemodynamic metrics. This is ostensibly due to interaction with other common comorbidities, especially hypertension. In addition, AF has a complex relationship with the state of the baroreflex. Evidence indicates that baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), the ability of the intrinsic cardiac control system to initiate parasympathetic response, is suppressed during AF. Therefore, a …
