Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Urban tree planting efforts have accelerated globally, but systematic monitoring of planted trees, particularly of survivorship and growth, lags behind. To help address this challenge, we developed and implemented the Ascot App, a free, mobile-based tool designed to streamline citizen science data collection in urban habitat restoration projects. Deployed at a Miyawaki-style microforest in Ascot Hills Park, Los Angeles, the app enables volunteers with minimal training to scan QR-coded tags on seedlings and submit standardized, timestamped plant health data via an intuitive interface. The app reduces user error through simplified prompts and integrates directly with a web-based administrative portal for …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii is an exotic aquatic crustacean with global prevalence. Native to the Southeastern United States, this species has been introduced for aquaculture as it is a popular food fishery resource. A well-documented host for trematodes, P. clarkii is a known vector for parasitic, fungal, and viral infections. Procambarus clarkii has demonstrated the ability to consume exotic snails such as Melanoides tuberculata as a means of controlling snail-borne infections. In this study, an isolated exotic P. clarkii specimen was collected from an urban waterway in Los Angeles, California adjacent and draining into the largest remaining wetland …
Investigating The Regulatory Impact Of Non-Coding Rnas On Meis1, Salma Fahim
Investigating The Regulatory Impact Of Non-Coding Rnas On Meis1, Salma Fahim
Theses and Dissertations
Myeloid ecotropic virus insertion site 1 (MEIS1) is a transcription factor involved in a myriad of functions such as hematopoiesis, cardiac regeneration, cell cycle progression, cell proliferation, and limb and organ development. Precise control of MEIS1 expression and function is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and preventing pathological conditions including cancer. Emerging evidence suggests that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a significant role in fine-tuning MEIS1 activity. Unmasking these regulatory mechanisms could provide potential therapeutic strategies for conditions where MEIS1 is aberrantly expressed. The present dissertation presents a comprehensive overview of current knowledge on MEIS1, synthesizing findings from the literature to …
The Role Of Dust Inputs And Sediment Phosphorus Diffusion Into Utah Lake, Utah, United States Of America, Kristen E. Smith
The Role Of Dust Inputs And Sediment Phosphorus Diffusion Into Utah Lake, Utah, United States Of America, Kristen E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Human activities have led to excessive nutrient enrichment which is greater than lake systems can naturally assimilate. This process is known as eutrophication and it is driving significant algae growth resulting in the more common release of harmful toxins. Utah Lake, located in Utah County, UT is one such water body that even after major reductions in anthropogenic phosphorus influent, continues to experience frequent, harmful algal blooms. The extent to which natural processes, like atmospheric dust deposition and sediment recycling, contribute to the lake's phosphorus budget is still poorly understood.
To address this gap of knowledge, this study quantified phosphorus …

This study examined whether patterns of maltreatment predicted reoffending among 5,194 justice-involved youth (JIY) from a large Texas juvenile probation department. Using latent class analysis on five maltreatment types (physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence), we empirically identified three classes: “Poly-victimization” (17.8%; high across all types), “Psychological Maltreatment” (15.3%; high emotional abuse and neglect), and “Low Maltreatment” (66.9%; low/moderate across types). JIY in the “Poly-victimization” and “Psychological Maltreatment” classes were more likely to engage in general and violent reoffending within 1 year controlling for covariates. These findings highlight the varying importance of different maltreatment …

Background: Transposable elements are normally silenced by epigenetic mechanisms; however, during malignant transformation, epigenetic alterations enable transposons to produce functional molecules like miRNAs. Among these, LINE-2 (L2) elements can generate miRNAs capable of regulating key genes, including tumor suppressors. Two L2-derived miRNAs, miR-28 and miR-708, have been linked to lung cancer, yet the mechanisms underlying their dysregulation remain poorly understood. Our study reveals how genomic context contributes to aberrant gene expression through comprehensive bioinformatic analyses.
Methods: Using bioinformatics analysis, we evaluated the expression of miR-28 and miR-708 in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) datasets from TCGA. …

Background: Brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are a major risk factor for intracerebral hemorrhages in young patients. Recent clinical studies have reported that the majority of human bAVMs harbor somatic KRAS mutations. In our previous study, we confirmed the causal role of endothelial KRASG12V mutation in bAVM development in mice through hyperactivation of the MEK/ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase) pathway. However, the treatment efficacy of targeting MEK/ERK signaling in bAVMs, regarding clinical and biological outcomes, remains unclear.
Methods: In this study, we used the Food and Drug Administration-approved MEK inhibitor, trametinib, to treat mice with bAVMs induced by brain endothelial cell (EC)-specific …

Wild Robots: Humans, Wilderness, And Technology In Becky Chambers’ Monk And Robot Series, Melissa Moore
Honors Theses
As technology advances and the environment deteriorates, the way people view the relationships between technology, wilderness, and humans becomes essential for society to move forward. To investigate perceptions about technology’s place in an environmentally conscious society, this project examines manifestations of wilderness/wildness and technology in Becky Chambers’ Monk and Robot series through the lens of ecocriticism. Using Timothy Morton's concept of the ecological thought as a framework for analysis, the circumstances present in the novel suggest that the triangle separating humans, wilderness, and technology has actually collapsed, replaced by an enmeshment of technology, wilderness, and humanity.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks healthy tissue. IBD can occur in both adults and children, describing Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Colitis (CC). Our lab studies human alpha defensin 5 (HD5), an antimicrobial peptide that normally maintains small intestinal sterility. However, in CC patients, HD5 is overexpressed in the colon. Preliminary data suggests that HD5 increases colonic cell death. This project aims to determine if HD5 induces apoptosis and its mechanisms. To this end, we will test if the suppression of caspase enzymes with a pan-caspase inhibitor reduces cell death triggered by …

Impact Of Zar1l Expression On Drug Response In Breast Cancer Cells, Maryam M. Gerges, Smita Misra
Student Scholar Symposium
Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among females. BC arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of breast epithelial cells. A crucial gene associated with BC is the Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 2 (BRCA2), a tumor suppressor that aids in DNA repair. Proper BRCA2 function helps prevent BC. Our lab studied the cell cycle-dependent expression of BRCA2 revealing that its promoter exhibits bi-directional activity. During cell division, forward activity transcribes BRCA2, while in the resting phase, reverse activity transcribes ZAR2 (Zygote Arrest 1 Like). ZAR2, an RNA-binding protein with …

The Role Of Human Alpha Defensin 5 (Hd5) In Disrupted Wound Healing Processes In Crohn’S Colitis, Jafer Aljorani, Amanda Williams
Student Scholar Symposium
Wound healing is a complex biological process requiring the coordinated function of multiple proteins. In chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn’s Colitis (CC), this process is dysregulated, leading to delayed tissue repair and increased disease burden. Prior studies indicate that Human Alpha Defensin 5 (HD5) is over-expressed in the colonic epithelium of CC patients, yet its impact on wound healing remains poorly understood. Our laboratory has identified that HD5 may impair wound healing by modulating key structural and regulatory proteins. Preliminary findings suggest that HD5 reduces the expression and function of desmoplakin, a critical desmosomal protein essential for maintaining …

Functionality Of The Ryanodine Receptor Type 1 (Ryr1) In The Development Of Malignant Hyperthermia (Mh), Cesar Medina, Joshua Owens
Student Scholar Symposium
Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is a rare but potentially lethal pharmacogenetic disorder, affecting roughly 1 in 30,000 children and 1 in 100,000 adults undergoing surgery. MH can be triggered by agents used for general anesthesia. These may include volatile anesthetics such as sevoflurane, isoflurane, desflurane, halothane or depolarizing neuromuscular blockers such as succinylcholine. Upon administration of a trigger, an MH susceptible (MHS) patient can develop a hypermetabolic state during the intraoperative or postoperative periods. If not treated quickly, an MH episode could result in organ dysfunction or death. The primary mechanisms involved in the development of an MH crisis include the …

Effects Of Valerobetaine In Fatty-Acid Induced Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation, Carolyn Tran, Maryam Mina, Diyar Fadhil
Student Scholar Symposium
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women with 287,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 43,250 deaths reported in 2022. In fact, 75% of these deaths aren’t from the initial tumor but due to the spread of breast cancer tumors to other sites, also known as metastases. Breast cancer occurs when breast tissue cells mutate and proliferate uncontrollably, resulting in a lump or mass. In breast cancer, the origin of proliferation, or the primary site, for cancer cells is mostly within the milk ducts. Then, tumor cells can start migrating away from its primary …

Approximately 1.6 million Americans currently have Crohn’s Disease (CD), a condition that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, particularly the small intestine, leading to chronic inflammation, abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, and fatigue. Although treatments exist, misdiagnosis remains a challenge due to symptom overlap with other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Previous studies have shown an increase in Human Alpha Defensin (HD5) in Crohn’s Colitis, resulting in slower wound healing closure, increased apoptosis, and potential effects regarding alpha-actin expression. However, its effects in the small intestine remain unclear. Alpha-actin is a cytoskeletal protein that maintains cellular structure through cell migration, tissue remodeling, and …

Student Scholar Symposium
Breast cancer accounts for approximately 297,500 cases annually in the United States, leading to over 43,000 fatalities. These deaths occur due to cancer's ability to bypass the normal cell cycle, proliferating uncontrollably and metastasizing throughout the body. Notably, over 75% of breast cancer-related deaths are attributed to metastases. The hallmark of altered cellular metabolism enables cancer cells to enhance fat metabolism alongside glycolysis, driving increased tumor aggressiveness and higher metastatic rates. Currently, no FDA-approved drugs directly target metastases or prevent migrating cancer cells. Consequently, inhibiting fat metabolism presents a potential strategy to reduce metastases and cancer cell migration; however, existing …

Structural Basis Of A Class Ii Ribonucleotide Reductase Found If Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Leah Jacob
Student Scholar Symposium
Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains a leading global health challenge, particularly due to its ability to enter a dormant, drug-tolerant state that enables long-term persistence within the host. Just before dormancy, Mtb replicates its entire genome creating DNA precursors for when the infection reactivates. Ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) play a critical role in bacterial survival by catalyzing the conversion of ribonucleotides into deoxyribonucleotides, a necessary step for DNA replication and repair. The class II RNR, NrdZ, has been implicated in facilitating Mtb persistence under hypoxic stress conditions, yet its structural and mechanistic function remains largely uncharacterized. …

Student Scholar Symposium
Breast cancer affects approximately 2.3 million women worldwide, causing an estimated 670,000 deaths in 2022. Among its subtypes, 15-20% exhibit overexpression of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2), a tyrosine kinase receptor that drives tumor aggressiveness. HER2 activates the PI3K and RAS/RAF/MAPK pathways, promoting uncontrolled cell growth, proliferation, and survival. In HER2+ breast cancer, gene amplification leads to excess HER2 protein production, resulting in persistent signaling and unchecked tumor progression. However, this dependency on HER2 presents a key therapeutic opportunity. Trastuzumab, an anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody, inhibits HER2 signaling and enhances immune-mediated cancer cell destruction. When combined with Lapatinib, chemotherapy, …

Sites that are high in toxic H2S are also characterized by low levels of oxygen, making any organism that inhabits these tough conditions to be deemed extremophiles. Tolerance of these multiple stressors is impacted by numerous external environmental factors. The question being addressed in this study is if diet affects how well these fish tolerate H2S. I used 80 laboratory-bred female P. mexicana originating from two sulfidic and non-sulfidic population. Half of the fish from …

Tarantulas (Theraposidae) are predatory arachnids that can help control populations of herbivorous arthropods. We have been monitoring populations of the Missouri brown tarantula (Aphonopelma hentzi) in Missouri glades for three seasons and have questions about their welfare during these surveys. Unlike mammals, arthropods are not extensively researched and there are only a few known facts about measuring their welfare. Managing stress for wild animals during field surveys is important for reducing the potential negative impacts of research. In mammals, increased heart rate is positively correlated with negative stress and eustress. Using the same logic, we hypothesized that heart rate could …

Gambling advertising has become increasingly prevalent across various media platforms such as TV, social media, real-life advertising, etc. With advertisements designed to influence attitudes, intentions, and behaviors of potential and existing consumers, this review aims to compile existing research to examine the measurable effects of gambling advertising. Studies indicate that young people and problem gamblers are especially vulnerable to these advertisements, which normalize gambling and contribute to increases in gambling behavior. This effect on behavior is dose-dependent; increased exposure to advertising is associated with greater gambling engagement. While responsible gambling messages are often included in advertisements, they remain largely ineffective …
