Animal Production From Tree-Pasture Association Systems In Brazil, João C. Saibro Nov 2021

Animal Production From Tree-Pasture Association Systems In Brazil, João C. Saibro

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Agroforestry systems (AFS) in general and silvipastoral systems (SPS) in particular, have been studied intensively in Brazil since the 1980’s. The majority of the research work has been conducted in the wet tropical Amazon region, in the semi-arid conditions of the Northeast, and under subtropical soil and climatic conditions in the Southeast or in the South. Research emphasis has been placed on interactions between the main components of AFS: tree, pasture, soil and microclimatic elements. Evaluation of animal performance in SPS generally has not been the main objective of experiments. A recent survey of research on SPS using Eucalyptus spp …

Mediterranizing Gauguin. Giuseppe Biasi’S Africa And Sardinia, Giuliana Altea Nov 2021

Mediterranizing Gauguin. Giuseppe Biasi’S Africa And Sardinia, Giuliana Altea

Artl@s Bulletin

Looking at the North- African stay of the artist Giuseppe Biasi (1885–1945), the paper deals with a brand of Mediterraneism marked by issues of national and regional identity. A key figure of the regionalist movement in his native Sardinia, in Egypt Biasi sympathized with the painters Mukhtar and Said’s nationalist ideals. Back in Italy, his works showed a conflation of the African and Sardinian worlds, implicitly confirming the theories of the anthropologist Giuseppe Sergi about the Italians as Mediterranean race and contributing to spread the fascist notion of a mediterraneism aimed at justifying colonialism.

Beyond Noucentisme: Joaquim Sunyer’S Mediterranean Pastoral, Maria Lluïsa Faxedas Nov 2021

Beyond Noucentisme: Joaquim Sunyer’S Mediterranean Pastoral, Maria Lluïsa Faxedas

Artl@s Bulletin

Taking as case study the painting Pastoral (1910–11), one of the iconic works of the Catalan artist Joaquim Sunyer (1874–1956), this paper examines the established link between Mediterraneanism and Noucentisme in Catalan culture in the first decades of the twentieth century. A look at how this work was received when it was first exhibited, and the sub-sequent re- reading of its iconography, enables us to understand Pastoral nowadays not as much as a symbol of Noucentisme, but more as a potential meeting point between the different aesthetic trends of the period.

“Dusty” Arcadias: Pastoral Visions And Greek Landscape In The Work Of Fred Boissonnas In The Context Of Mediterranean Cultural Myth, Marianna Karali

Artl@s Bulletin

In the following paper, I examine the possible affiliation the Swiss commercial photographer Fred Boissonnas shared with certain groups of Greek-French Nationalists as early as in 1903-1907 and the way this particular nexus inspired the integrity of his work on Greek landscape, forming as well his naturalistic vision on photography. Within the visionary spectrum of a northerner excursionist and the aesthetic eye of a Pictorialist photographer, Boissonnas marked an Innovative gaze upon Mediterranean Arcadian Imagery, altering the Symbolic Classicism of von Gloeden paradigm of Italian South.

The State Of Animal- Assisted Interventions In France: Is The Iahaio Model Relevant?, Alice Mignot, Gérard Leboucher, Véronique Servais, Karelle De Luca

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Animal- assisted interventions (AAI) became more generalized in health care settings and their development in Europe is increasing. In France, the practice has grown in the absence of official recognition and regulation. In this context, we aim to identify the main characteristics of the French practice of AAI that can influence the establishment of a local regulation. Second, we aim to question the relevance of the model proposed by the International Association of Human- Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) distinguishing animal- assisted therapies (AAT) and (AAA) animal- assisted activities from the French practice of AAI. We interviewed 111 French handlers in …

Physiological Responses To Water Deficit By Sorghum Bicolor Genotypes Varying In Expression Of The Limited Transpiration Trait, Marylou C. Machingura Nov 2021

Physiological Responses To Water Deficit By Sorghum Bicolor Genotypes Varying In Expression Of The Limited Transpiration Trait, Marylou C. Machingura

Georgia Journal of Science

The ability by land plants to partially close their stomata in response to high vapor pressure deficit, called the limited transpiration trait, is a rare phenomenon in crop plants. The characteristic has been demonstrated in several crop species including Sorghum bicolor. The molecular and physiological basis for the limited transpiration trait is however, not clear. This study was conducted to determine the physiological attributes associated with the limited transpiration trait in three sorghum genotypes SC1345, SC35 and Macia. Plants of these three sorghum genotypes were established in a greenhouse and subjected to water deficit stress. Chlorophyll fluorescence and relative …

Effect Of Estrogen Pretreatment On Glial-Like Cell Viability Following Stress Response Hormone Treatment, Bridget N. Smith, Kevin S. Burgess, Kathleen S. Hughes Nov 2021

Effect Of Estrogen Pretreatment On Glial-Like Cell Viability Following Stress Response Hormone Treatment, Bridget N. Smith, Kevin S. Burgess, Kathleen S. Hughes

Georgia Journal of Science

The role of steroid hormones is critical in cellular function. Previous studies have found a positive correlation between the endogenous estrogen 17β-estradiol and cellular protection. Conversely, exogenous conjugated equine estrogens provide less protective mechanisms than endogenous hormones, and little is known about the role of estrogens in cellular protection during a stress response. In the present study, we compare the effects of short-term estrogen pretreatments (alone and in combination) on cell viability when cells with glial cell morphology are exposed to either epinephrine or cortisol. Results showed that 1 µM 17β-estradiol resulted in decreased cell viability following the epinephrine treatment; …

Comparing Allelochemicals Of English Ivy And Native Georgia Plants, Rebecca Senft Nov 2021

Comparing Allelochemicals Of English Ivy And Native Georgia Plants, Rebecca Senft

Symposium of Student Scholars

English Ivy (Hedera helix L.) is a common invasive plant causing biodiversity losses across the southeast and parts of the northwestern US. The mechanisms by which Ivy invades native ecosystems are not well understood but may include allelopathy, a process through which one species produces biochemicals that disrupt competitors. These biochemicals are often produced and exuded by roots into soil, making them difficult to isolate. This study used a soil-less hydroponic system and gas-chromatography mass spectroscopy to examine differences in the chemicals produced by roots of native Georgia plants and English Ivy. Our results suggest there are differences in the …

Binding Affinity And Interaction Of Sars-Cov-2 Epitopes With Major Histocompatibility Complex, Sareena Kandavalli, James Stewart, Mohammed A. Halim

Symposium of Student Scholars

SARS CoV-2 has been affecting the world since 2019. It caused 245 million cases of infection and around 5 million deaths worldwide. The most important strategies for the development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 are inactivated or weakened virus, replicating or non-replicating viral vector-based approaches, DNA, RNA, virus particle like approaches and epitope-based approaches. The epitope-based approach is rapid, accurate, cost-effective, and reliable against pathogens. By presenting epitopes (antigen peptides) on antigen-presenting cells (APCs), the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), also recognized as the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system in humans, plays an essential role in triggering T-cell immune responses. The focus …

Pilot Study Exploring The Impact That Laboratory Instruction Has On A Student's Stem Professional Identity , Datiel Dayani, Dr. Michelle Head, Amjad Alkawam, Emma Pearman Nov 2021

Pilot Study Exploring The Impact That Laboratory Instruction Has On A Student's Stem Professional Identity , Datiel Dayani, Dr. Michelle Head, Amjad Alkawam, Emma Pearman

Symposium of Student Scholars

STEM professional identity serves as one lens through which researchers have used to study factors that influence achievement in chemistry courses and persistence in a STEM major. The literature has proposed that the high attrition rate among STEM majors may result from the student’s evolving professional identity, motivational factors, and how they correlate a STEM career to their future aspirations. There is limited insight into how laboratory classes and teaching practices affect a student’s professional identity development. To investigate this, this study employed James Marcia’s identity development theory to understand the relationship between a student's identity status and their perception …

Cell Penetrating Peptide Inhibiting The Main Protease Of Sars-Cov-2, Adam Ashley, James Stewart, Mohammad Halim Nov 2021

Cell Penetrating Peptide Inhibiting The Main Protease Of Sars-Cov-2, Adam Ashley, James Stewart, Mohammad Halim

Symposium of Student Scholars

As of October 2021, SARS-CoV-2 has infected over 244 million people and killed about 5 million people. The current FDA approved vaccines are effective; however, they lose their effectiveness after a few months of receiving both doses of the vaccine, and it is recommended to get a booster shot six months after receiving the second dose of the vaccine. Therefore, new highly effective, long lasting antiviral agents and strategies are needed to create an alternative treatment for SARS-CoV-2 and the different variants. Previous studies have shown that cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) have led to greater efficiency of intracellular delivery. However, …

Seasonal shifts in phytoplankton accumulation and loss largely follow changes in mixed layer depth, but the impact of mixed layer depth on cell physiology remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the physiological state of phytoplankton populations associated with distinct bloom phases and mixing regimes in the North Atlantic. Stratification and deep mixing alter community physiology and viral production, effectively shaping accumulation rates. Communities in relatively deep, early-spring mixed layers are characterized by low levels of stress and high accumulation rates, while those in the recently shallowed mixed layers in late-spring have high levels of oxidative stress. Prolonged stratification into early autumn …

Simulation Of Pedestrian In Multifunctional Passageway Of Metro Station Area Based On Social Force Model, Wang Xi, Zhang Rui, Fei Shuo, Minghang Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Transitional passageway connecting subway stations and commercial facilities is generally designed as the multifunctional passageway, in which the traffic function is the main and the service function is the auxiliary. The impact of the service facilities on both sides of the passage on pedestrian traffic is difficult to be quantitatively analyzed and simulated and modeled. Through measurement, it is found that the viscous effect of service facilities on pedestrian traffic is mainly slowing down the speed or changing the trajectory direction. Through analyzing the horizontal influence range of service facilities, dividing the passage into different areas, and introducing the …

Making Agriculture Carbon Neutral Amid A Changing Climate: The Case Of South-Western Australia, Ross Kingwell

Climate Science Research Articles

Making Australian agriculture carbon neutral by 2050 is a goal espoused by several agricultural organisations in Australia. How costly might it be to attain that goal, especially when adverse climate change projections apply to agriculture in southern Australia? This study uses scenario analysis to examine agricultural emissions and their abatement via reforestation in south-western Australia under projected climate change. Most scenarios include the likelihood of agricultural emissions being reduced in the coming decades. However, the impact of projected adverse climate change on tree growth and tree survival means that the cost of achieving agricultural carbon neutrality via reforestation is forecast …
